Affect in the Mental State Examination (MSE)
Affect is a core component of the Mental State Examination (MSE), a structured clinical assessment used in psychiatry and psychology to evaluate a patient's current psychological functioning. It refers to the observable, external expression of emotion at the moment of the examination (i.e., what the clinician sees).
Definition:
Affect = The objective, moment-to-moment, observable emotional expression (facial expression, tone of voice, body language, etc.).
Contrast with: Mood = The subjective, sustained emotional state reported by the patient (e.g., "I feel sad all the time").
