5 Things You Need to Know About Fatehpur Sikri's History
Jan 9, 2026
Fatehpur Sikri is a stunning fortified city in Uttar Pradesh, India, about 37 km west of Agra. Built primarily from red sandstone, it served as the capital of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar from 1571 to 1585. Often called a "fort" or palace complex, it's actually a planned walled city blending royal palaces, mosques, and courts. Akbar founded it to honor Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, who predicted the birth of his son (later Jahangir). The name "Fatehpur Sikri" means "City of Victory," celebrating Akbar's conquests.
The city was abandoned around 1585–1610 due to water scarcity and shifted campaigns, but its remarkably preserved structures earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1986 for its outstanding Indo-Islamic architecture and historical importance.
Key Architectural Highlights
Fatehpur Sikri showcases a unique fusion of Persian, Indian (Hindu and Jain), and Islamic styles, reflecting Akbar's tolerant policies.
Buland Darwaza (Victory Gate): A massive 54-meter-high gateway built in 1576 to commemorate Akbar's Gujarat victory. It's one of India's grandest architectural feats, made of red sandstone with intricate carvings.
Jama Masjid: One of India's largest mosques, with a vast courtyard and the white marble Tomb of Salim Chishti inside, famous for its intricate lattice screens.
Panch Mahal: A five-storey columnar pavilion, open on all sides for cooling breezes, inspired by Persian wind-catchers.
Other notable structures: Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Jodha Bai's Palace (blending Hindu and Islamic elements), Anup Talao pool, and Birbal's House.
Aerial views highlight the city's layout on a ridge, surrounded by a 6–11 km wall with nine gates.
Today, it's a popular tourist site, often visited with the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. The red sandstone glows beautifully at sunrise/sunset, evoking Mughal grandeur. If you're planning a visit, the best time is October–March for pleasant weather. 5 Things You Need to Know About Fatehpur Sikri's History
