Hey, what's up, Wanderers
0:15
Prepared Wanderer out with my truck today. And what I want to do is I want to walk you through some kit that I've been putting together
0:23
for my truck. Just got a new truck toolbox and I've been loading it up and really thinking about the
0:33
gear that I need in it in case an emergency happens. So we're going to go through that today and hopefully you'll stick around and walk through
0:41
it with me. So let's get into it. All right, you'll have to forgive me
0:46
It's a little windy today, but I really wanted to get through to this because it's kind of a sunny day
0:51
And I just got this toolbox for my truck. So I will tell you that the process of buying a toolbox for your truck, especially if you
1:04
have a mid-sized truck, it's a little bit more difficult than if you have a full-sized truck
1:11
There's lots of boxes on the market available at the stores for full-sized trucks, like
1:19
the 71-inch boxes. But when you start getting into the smaller trucks like the Frontiers, the Tacomas, the
1:26
Rangers, the box options become limited. And I will say that the whole process of finding a toolbox is a little confusing because the
1:34
dimensions aren't always fully listed. I found this one at Lowe's. This is a Craftsman brand
1:42
It's built by Better Built. And what I really like about it is, one, it's black
1:48
So it matches my truck. But also, it fits my bed perfectly. And it has a taper at the bottom, which fits around the wheel wells
1:56
So this video isn't so much about the box itself, but what's interesting about these
2:03
toolboxes is that I really was struggling with finding the right way to store my gear
2:16
and having storage options for my truck. My truck is a small interior
2:21
I don't have a lot of storage options. And besides all the tools that you need to support a vehicle, I also wanted room to throw
2:30
in other emergency gear as things come up. So a friend of mine suggested get a toolbox
2:37
You can lock it. They're secure. It holds a lot. And it's inconspicuous
2:42
I mean, in the area that I'm in, pretty much every pickup has some type of toolbox on it
2:49
Either it's a farm vehicle or a tradesman, like an electrician or a construction worker
2:56
So they have their toolboxes on their trucks. So this blends right in with all the other trucks on the road
3:01
It doesn't look inconspicuous in any way. It's a pretty normal thing to see
3:07
So what do I got in mine? First thing is, I'll move this tray over
3:14
I keep a poly tarp back here. This is an 8 by 10
3:19
Obviously that's for covering, you know, making, covering up stuff on the bed of my truck
3:23
But also going to be used in a pinch as an emergency shelter
3:29
Toe straps, or excuse me, not toe straps, but tie-down straps, just ratchet straps
3:33
I've got four of those. This plastic bag, I keep a variety of bungees, different sizes
3:48
Of course, a set of jumper cables. Moving this tray over, which I love this tray
3:58
If you're, you can get a box that has a removable tray
4:03
It's definitely, it's very helpful. So I've got a set of Cobalt standard size sockets
4:12
My truck is metric, so all my tools usually are in metric, but I wanted to keep a set
4:16
of standards as well, just in case I have to help somebody else out or something else
4:21
happens on the road that I need to fix. Toe strap. Some additional cordage
4:29
Got a post cleaner for a battery. WD-40. It's a little magnetic light that I picked up somewhere, but it's nice that you can actually
4:42
attach this underneath your hood while you're working. Got some valve caps, tires in case I lose one
4:51
Here I've got an inverter, 400 watt, so I can attach this to my battery in my truck
4:58
and then actually plug in standard three prong extension cords. And I've used, actually used this in the past to power air pumps and devices like that
5:13
so it's definitely a very handy item to have. Of course, a good pair of leather gloves
5:25
This little inexpensive headlamp I picked up. I got this at Harbor Freight actually for like three bucks, so good to have hands-free
5:35
lighting solutions when you're working on your vehicle or you're stuck in the middle
5:40
of nowhere along a dark road and you've got to change a tire
5:44
Headlamps are awesome for that. And over here I've got my roaring fire tool roll, and I actually did a video on this
5:54
so if you go back, you can find that video, and I go in pretty in-depth on how this thing's
6:01
set up and what I carry in it. So this just has a full complement of wrenches, sockets, different types of pliers, screwdrivers
6:10
everything you need for repairing a truck, and then some little extra stuff too
6:15
Some more poly rope. In here I've got a military poncho, so I keep myself dry if I have to change a tire or have
6:26
to walk home. Under that I've got a Gerber machete, this is the Gator
6:41
Not the greatest machete in the world, but it's a compact size and it will do for clearing
6:49
brush if I need to. Under there I've got a folding saw, a bow saw, so if I have to really cut a decent sized
7:08
piece of wood that gets in the path of my vehicle, I can do that
7:13
Over here I've got just an empty gas can and then a bottle of water so I can top off my radiator
7:19
And in the gas can, I don't keep full just because I don't want everything in my box
7:26
stinking like gas, so at least I have a container if I have to walk to a gas station, I've got
7:32
one with me in case they don't have one for whatever reason
7:36
Or I can get gas from somebody along the road, so that gives me an option there
7:49
I also keep another saw, this is a smaller limbing saw, this is a Corona
7:54
I picked this up at Lowe's. I've done a review of this saw as well, it really cuts like a demon
8:00
It's a very decent saw for the money and super inexpensive, I think they're under $20
8:06
at Lowe's or Home Depot or wherever I got it at, one of the big box stores, but a great
8:11
item to have. A couple different lighting options, I got this at Harbor Freight, so this has a magnetic
8:23
base, of course it has a standard LED light there, but it also has a flashlight into it
8:31
and you're able to hang it, so if you're working underneath the hood of your vehicle, you have
8:38
that capability, so basically a nice little portable shop light. And then I also have one of these, this I think I got at Rural King, and it's a standard
8:59
LED, it has two modes, it has a red light mode, which I thought was really interesting
9:05
and it also has a flashing mode, so you can use it as an emergency light
9:11
And then what's nice about it is, it's got this stand, so you can set it on a surface
9:19
you can angle it different ways, so I thought that would be good working in the truck, around
9:27
the truck, or even using it under a tarp as a camp light, so it's just a nice little portable
9:31
light source. You can never have enough light sources. And then this is a military issue chem light holder, it has a magnetic base, and then you
9:48
screw the chem lights into the base of that, and that way you can use that as a task light
9:53
or for signaling. I always keep a handful of glow sticks in my truck as well
10:00
So that's it for what's in the box now. So, there's a few things that I want to add
10:05
I would like to add an axe, and I have one at home, but I haven't got it in here yet
10:10
I want to add a set of bolt cutters, which I have, so I need to throw those in here
10:16
And then really for the rest of it, I'm going to leave it the way it is, because I don't
10:22
want to fill it up too much, because I want room to throw in a few extra things
10:27
And, you know, just depending on what's going on, this would be a great place to store a
10:34
rifle if I am heading out to go hunting or scouting around an area
10:40
I can store this back here securely and indiscreetly, so if I do park my vehicle somewhere and I
10:49
have to leave my rifle in the vehicle, it's not seen through the windows as a rifle
10:54
It will be stored in here. So, there's room to do that
10:58
There's room to put extra gear. Now, one additional thing that I carry in my truck that complements this, I'm going
11:06
to show you next. So, one thing I carry in my vehicle is this is a bag, a backpack of some sort
11:19
So, I've done some videos on get home bags and things like that, and I've really been
11:24
kind of paring down what I carry and trying to come up with a system that is a little
11:30
bit more useful, so it's not all geared towards just getting home or bugging out or whatever
11:36
you want to call it. I wanted a bag that's kind of general purpose, really a wilderness survival go bag is kind
11:42
of what I'm calling it, or just a go bag. And really what's in it are the basics
11:49
It is shelter, fire, signaling, water, food, and then tools. So, in here I've got a fire kit
12:07
I've got a Hidden Woodsman, or excuse me, Exotac Titan lighter. That's got the Hidden Woodsman logo on it
12:18
I've got the Hidden Woodsman Exotac Mesh Cap XL. And then I've also got an Exotac Rip Spool, which is the repair tool
12:31
It's got duct tape on it and wire and a needle inside
12:37
Of course, chapstick. Small headlamp. Small Altoids tin with some fire making capabilities
12:48
I've got some wax prep pads that I've soaked and some fat wood
12:56
That way I can make a fire, but I can also use this tin to make char tinder or char cloth
13:02
or whatever. So, super handy item to have. And then a really good size fire steel with a magnesium bar on it as well
13:17
So, in this front pouch I've got water treatment tabs, a mini compass, a whistle, a notebook, and a pencil
13:27
And then a wire saw. This is from BCB International, so it's a little bit more decent wire saw than some of the ones that you find
13:37
It's not the greatest, but it will do in a pinch. It's better than nothing
13:43
If you know how to use them, actually they do a pretty decent job
13:47
You've just got to know how to use them correctly without breaking them. And here I have a Fresnel lens, magnifying lens for starting a fire or reading maps
13:55
It does double duty. So that's all in this front pouch. And there's a bigger pouch here, a zipper pocket
14:04
I really don't have anything in here. I usually keep a bandana or something. So that goes in there
14:10
Of course, on the outside I've got 32 ounce Nalgene. And then I've got my dedicated water filter, which is the new Grail Covert
14:22
I think this is a 16 ounce. This is the Ultrapress. So you can purify water on the go
14:40
In here I've got a set of mechanics gloves. I've got a small food pack
14:47
This has protein bars and jerky and some meat sticks. This zipper pouch right here
14:59
I've got Espytabs. And I'll show you here in a minute why
15:05
Here's some additional food. This is Lipton soup mix and then coffee
15:10
So I've got enough calories to get me by for a couple days. And then I've got a bag of food
15:30
Here I've got a small titanium pot. This is from Wild Camping International
15:36
I've done a review of this before. This is a nice little 750 milliliter pot
15:42
It's got a bale and then folding handles. I've got everything in here I need to cook on
15:49
So I've got a guy out rubber folding bowl. Dick lighter
16:05
CRKT eating tool. I've got a Snowpeak Hot Lips that goes on the side of the pot
16:15
So in case I want to drink out of the pot. It doesn't burn my lips
16:20
And then my stove. There's the windscreen for my stove. You may have seen this in some other videos I've done
16:31
Talking about get home bags. This is my Espyt stove. So put your Espyt tab on there
16:37
Fold those legs out. The pot sits on top of that. But it weighs nothing
16:42
It's titanium and it folds down to nothing. And everything that I just showed
16:52
Including the folding bowl. Fits nicely right in there. Keep this all organized and neat
17:09
There's that. My dedicated tools are a Leatherman Wingman multi-tool. I really like this one because it's got a nice
17:22
A Leatherman Wingman multi-tool. I really like this one because it is spring-loaded
17:30
So you can do one-handed operation with it. It works pretty well one-handed
17:35
And it's got a saw and a file. Which are two big tools to have on a multi-tool for me
17:43
And then my field knife is the Saug Seal Pup. And this is just a great little basic knife
17:51
Now it comes in two models. There's one with serrations and one without. I would suggest the one without
17:56
It performs very well. It's very sharp out of the box. It's a great little knife
18:06
Back here I've got some shelter kit necessities. In my hidden woodsman pouch
18:17
There is some bank line. A nice big wad. 550 cord. And then some titanium tent stakes
18:34
So I can set up a shelter real quick. And then a couple of these Nite Ize clips for tarp
18:42
You actually run your paracord through there and then tie that to a tree. So it makes up setting
18:47
Setting up a tarp really quick and easy. You don't have to fiddle around with knots and stuff if you're tired
18:53
When your hands are tired and you're cold, you can set up a shelter pretty fast
18:59
So that's my little shelter pouch. I keep a small Blaze Orange vest
19:18
Of course a first aid pouch. This is pretty basic. Just a basic first aid kit
19:24
I've got that at a drugstore or something. Here's a product that I haven't done a review on yet, but I want to
19:31
This is a one wind cell nylon poncho. But it has tie outs on it that you can actually make a shelter out of it
19:40
So I think this will be a decent tarp. I think this will be a decent tarp for me
19:49
And then back here are some contractor garbage bags for making a browse bed or an emergency poncho. Whatever
20:04
Just ways of creating shelter or a ground clock. And then a thermal blanket or sometimes called a casualty blanket by the military
20:14
So it is silver on one side for reflection of heat. Makes a great ground sheet by the way
20:20
Or a shelter in itself. You can use these as tarps as well if you don't have any holes in them
20:25
So that's pretty much what I keep in this bag. And this bag lives in my truck
20:32
So if I want to go hiking, I have a kit with me
20:37
If I need emergency supplies, they're available to me. They're ready to go
20:43
And this all fits very nicely in this Hidden Woodsman EDC rucksack that I got
20:51
Which is a fantastic backpack. I think it's like 18 liters. It's not a very big backpack, but you don't really need much
21:00
As you can see, I got a lot of stuff in there
21:04
And it's very comfortable. And of course, made in the USA by Hidden Woodsman
21:10
But with this and then the emergency gear that I keep in the back of my toolbox
21:15
I think I'm pretty much ready for anything. And then of course, you also have to consider what you carry on you
21:23
Your EDC. So usually a pistol or a pocket knife, a bandana, a lighter, my wallet, my keys
21:32
Alright guys, that's it for today's video. I just wanted to walk you through some of the stuff that I'm doing
21:36
I'm going to be doing another video here shortly on gear inside my truck
21:41
and some organization possibilities for you on how to organize gear. And then also some of the medical gear that I carry for an emergency
21:49
which is really important. As always, please like, subscribe, share, all that good stuff
