Alright wanderers, we are out in the woods today and I wanted to go over what I take
0:23
in my bushcraft kind of day pack. You know, it doesn't matter what kind of pack I'm taking, there's always some basic components
0:29
I always like to have with me. It doesn't have to be a lot of stuff, it doesn't have to be very elaborate, but there's a few
0:35
basic things I like to take. It makes my day a little bit more comfortable
0:39
Today I'm rocking out an Expedition Falcon 2. This is a pack that I've owned before, just got it in a trade and you know, it's been
0:53
a while since I've used this pack, but I'm really enjoying it and there's a couple things
0:56
I like about it that are key features for me. One thing about the Falcon 2 is that it's a clamshell design and I'll show you that
1:03
in a minute, but let's go through the stuff first. So on the outside of the pack of course, a small axe
1:11
This is the Small Forest Axe from Grants for Brooks. It's the Ray Mears edition and it's got a badger claw, leather mask and collar on it
1:26
So it's always nice to have that processing down wood
1:36
Of course you can't go into the woods without some kind of fire kit
1:40
My fire kit has multiple ways of starting a fire, it's just not one way because you
1:45
never know if one's going to fail, you want to have something as a backup. So I have several different sources
1:50
First thing is a container of cotton balls with petroleum jelly. These are great fire starters, they burn a long time and they take a spark very easily
2:06
So this is a great emergency fire starter if you need it. Also it's good for wood burning stoves, you can throw that in the bottom of your stove
2:12
light it with a spark and you have fire. Of course a good high quality fire steel, nice big one
2:22
This one has a handle that actually can be shaved down and the shavings can be used to
2:26
start a fire. I haven't tried that yet, that's kind of on my agenda. It also has a magnesium bar in the back of it, so that gives you another way, another
2:37
ignition source. Flint and steel kit, of course this is kind of a primitive method of starting a fire
2:47
It's a lot of fun to play with and it's just kind of a neat skill to have and I like to
2:51
have one with me. This one has sentimental value, someone made this for me and it's just a lot of fun to
2:58
play with. This one also, this pocket bellows, which when this extends out you can really get this
3:07
down close to your fire and bring back an ember or a marginal fire into something that's
3:13
nice with just a couple quick puffs on the end of it
3:19
There's different methods of doing that, some guys carry arrow shafts or of course you can
3:23
on your knees and huff and puff but for me I don't have to bend over as much, not put
3:30
as much into it so I like to carry that. And then in the back here I've got jute twine and fatwood
3:43
And there's also a butane lighter in here somewhere, you don't need to see that, I always
3:49
have a couple lighters on me. So that's the fire kit and that's all in a nice contained pouch so if I grab it I know
3:59
exactly what is in here, there's not a bunch of other extra stuff that doesn't pertain
4:04
to being a fire kit, this is all fire kit so I can grab this, I can throw this in my
4:08
BDU pocket, I always know what's in here, I keep it packed, I don't have to be scrambling
4:15
going through my bag looking for different stuff, it's all in one nice little convenient package
4:21
I always take a nice large bandana or chamag. Another thing I like to have with me is some type of stove, it doesn't matter what you
4:36
like, I use alcohol stoves, I use folding wood burning stoves, I also use canister stoves
4:42
it really depends on the situation and what I want to carry that day
4:46
Today I'm using the alcohol stove, it's quick, it's easy, I can get my coffee going, I can
4:52
boil some water, whatever, they're just nice to have because you never know if you're in
4:56
an area where there's maybe a fire band or maybe it's just not a good safe place to start
5:02
a fire, especially if you're in a state park or something like that so I like to respect
5:05
the laws as much as possible and I always carry a little extra stove
5:10
Of course a fuel bottle, the alcohol stove, compass, good quality compass, I can't stress
5:20
that enough, don't buy a cheap compass, invest some money in it, learn how to use it, take
5:28
a class on it if you don't know how, maybe join up with an orienteering team, do something
5:34
to go out and actually learn how to use it. I like a base plate compass that has a sighting mirror, this is a Silva Ranger, this is an
5:42
old model, this is when they were actually made by Silva in Finland I believe and not
5:51
Chinese so it's a really good quality compass, no bubbles in it, has a sighting mirror which
5:57
also doubles as a signal mirror so I don't have to worry about that, I always have that
6:03
on me. Up here, small first aid kit, lip balm, some ibuprofen, there's a tick identification card
6:21
there's some band-aids, burn ointment, antibiotic ointment, sting relief, there's a little safety
6:28
razor in here, so just some basic stuff, this really isn't that elaborate of a first
6:34
aid kit, this is more of a boo-boo kit but it's good to have on you
6:39
Sometimes I carry more of a trauma kit with me, especially swinging axes and being out
6:45
here alone, I should have a tourniquet of some sort or some kind of large bandage, of
6:51
course my band-aid or my shemagh, excuse me, my bandana and my shemagh are going to
6:55
double as a bandage if I hurt myself, so first aid kit important, get trained, now I'm out
7:05
here shooting video so I have to carry extra batteries for my cameras and SD cards, of
7:23
course a lens pen for my cameras, a good quality flashlight, this is a Streamlight, it's nice
7:32
and bright but it's also small, compact, doesn't take up a lot of room, notebook, I
7:43
like a write in the rain notebook, this one is all set up for land navigation, there's
7:48
grid readers in here, there's the key to my ranger compass so I can change it, the declination
7:57
on it, there's a pen, write in the rain notebook, if you do any kind of map reading you're going
8:14
to need all that stuff, and then of course cordage, really important, 550 cord, it's
8:19
a good all purpose cordage, I always buy the high quality stuff, this is military spec
8:26
this actually has the 7 strands inside of it that can be broken down into even smaller
8:30
strands, it's not the cheap department store stuff, so get high quality paracord, I have
8:38
a ridge line that's already rigged up, ridge line and guy lines are already rigged up so
8:45
I can use these to set up a poncho or a tarp really quickly, I don't have to mess with
8:51
trying to figure out what I want to do for a set up, this is already ready to roll, this
8:55
is all I use it for, and of course bank line, bank line is really easy to find, you can
9:05
get this at walmart in the fishing section, it's pretty tough stuff and it's nice for
9:11
just kind of general camp crafts, whatever you're going to be doing in camp, you know
9:15
if you're going to do some lashings and you want to put together a tripod chair or a tripod
9:19
for the fire, this is a good way to put it together and then when you're done with it
9:24
you can just burn it or pitch it. Alright so you can see the clamshell design opens up nicely, everything is on display
9:44
there's no digging at the bottom of your pack looking for stuff, you can immediately see
9:47
what you have, and I kind of started using these types of packs when I first started
9:52
doing search and rescue, this was recommended to me by a buddy of mine, Uncle Z, he trained
9:58
me and he always preached that these were the best types of packs, clamshell designs
10:03
for search and rescue because when working with a patient you can easily lay your pack
10:09
on the ground and open it up and have all your gear displayed, first aid kit, rescue
10:14
gear, ropes, whatever, it was all right there, and ever since then it's something that I
10:20
always go back to, I've tried other packs and I tend to like these better just for that purpose
10:28
So in here you've seen some videos I've done on this one, this is the Bushcraft Outfitters
10:34
Mest Poncho, size large, OD green, really nice lightweight poncho that also can be used
10:41
as a tarp. I've got some steaks already rigged up, just cheap steaks you can get at Walmart, no big deal
10:52
My food bag and kitchen bag, this has everything I need in it to get my meal going, I've got
10:59
a little folding cup, some salt and pepper, there's Spam in there, there's a Clif Bar
11:04
a package of coffee, a cup of soup, some chicken flavoring from a ramen, some different sea
11:13
seasonings, hot sauce, just various things that I need. A pot grabber, this is aluminum, very lightweight, works with my skillet
11:26
Then I have my cook kit, always have some kind of container to cook in, either it's
11:46
going to be a canteen cup or it's going to be something like this, which is, this is
11:52
the Towax titanium 750ml cup, I've got a snow peacock lips on the side of it so I
12:03
don't burn my lips when I'm drinking coffee, I keep that in a little stuff sack
12:08
And on the inside there, when I'm going on a hike I usually put food in there, so like
12:12
this morning I had my eggs, my ham, a few other things, some butter, and that kind of
12:20
acts as a protection to the food, it keeps it all nice and neat
12:26
Another thing I always carry is a casualty blanket or a reflective blanket, this is a
12:33
military issue one, it's a little bit different than the store bought grabbers but it's very similar
12:40
You know, reflective side, and then of course the dark green nylon side
12:45
And I usually use this more as a ground cloth than anything, but also in an emergency it
12:49
can be used for something to, you know, keep me warm. Ok besides what I carry in my day pack, I always have on me, you know, a high quality
13:26
bushcraft knife, this is a Mora companion and a Kydex sheath, high carbon steel, great
13:32
basic blade, and then I always have a pocket knife with me, I prefer the Sack Farmer just
13:40
because of the tools it has on it, it has a nice awl, that's great for using on a fire
13:45
steel and also doing woodcraft, and then it also has, if you're unfamiliar with this
13:53
knife, is a nice little saw, and that saw comes in handy, especially when you're doing
14:04
like little carving projects like making spoons or whatnot. So besides what you have in your pack is also what you have on you and that's just as important
14:15
Usually carry in my BDU pocket a small personal survival kit, a butane lighter, maybe a little
14:22
bit of cordage, just depends on the situation what I'm doing. Alright guys so that's it for today, thanks for joining, I'm gonna get home, it's been
14:33
a really nice morning out here in the woods, hope you enjoyed it, and please subscribe
14:37
