I wanted to test out the claims and hype and see if this fire starter is any better then anything else on the market. Check it out the video to see how it does. Hey guys, Prepared Water Out in the Woods today
0:41
I want to show you a new product that I just found and that I'm going to do a little testing on today
0:46
This is Instafire Fire Starter as seen on Shark Tank. This is a military grade fire starter
1:00
This is the features for it. It lights wet wood, burns at nearly 1000 degrees, burns in winds up to 30 miles per hour, burns
1:08
on snow, and even floats and burns on water. Non-valve, non-expected flare-ups, long burn time, 1-8th of a couple burn 5-7 minutes
1:20
Five year shelf life. This little package of Instafire is supposed to have I think four different burns in it
1:35
four fires in it that you can get out of it. We're going to put it to the test today and see how this stuff does
1:43
I really don't know what makes this military grade. That's definitely a marketing thing that they put in the packaging because I think people
1:50
see that and they think it's going to be something more than it really is
1:56
To me, what's important are the claims that it makes of being able to light wet wood and
2:03
burning nearly 1000 degrees. That is important and that's what's going to hopefully make it a really nice fire starter
2:12
This package, I found this at Walmart for a dollar in the camping section
2:18
This was actually seen on Shark Tank and I saw that episode, and I think that was maybe
2:23
a year ago that that aired. It was an interesting product, but I really didn't hear anything else about it or really
2:30
look into it any more than that. The claims is that this thing is supposed to be able to have a very long burn time
2:40
It can burn wet wood. You can burn it on snow. It floats
2:45
All these different claims. If that's the case, then this is probably a decent thing to throw into your kit
2:54
Right off the bat, I noticed that it comes in this package and there's four fires
2:59
You can get up to four fires with what's included in the package, but once you open this package
3:04
what happens to the shelf life of this and how do you store it
3:09
How are you going to be able to use this four times if this package is not resealable and
3:14
it's not? What I want to do today is just pick up some wet wood off the ground and see if I can get
3:21
something going real quick. It's been raining for the past couple of days very heavily, so the woods are soaking wet
3:29
It's very damp, very humid. It's a good condition at least to try this out
3:37
So let's see how it goes. Alright, so I collected some stuff off the ground
3:53
This is wet. You can see that it's wet. Some of this stuff is in different conditions, varying conditions of dryness
4:16
There's a piece of wet bark. We'll just do a test on that
4:26
So the packaging is set up so you can tear it open, so you can open it without a knife
4:32
which is nice. Here's what it looks like inside. It kind of looks like sand or kitty litter
4:43
Very interesting stuff. So the instructions say 1 1⁄8 cup of instafire into a pile
4:54
So right away I think that's an issue because I'm a guy, I have no idea what 1 1⁄8 cup is
5:01
I don't know how I'm supposed to figure that out. I guess I'd have to pre-measure this at home and then know what 1 1⁄8 cup looks like
5:09
but I have no clue. So I'm going to totally guess. And this is, I think, probably one of the problems with the product
5:19
So we're just going to do that much. Put that on the wet bark
5:32
I don't know if I can get this wet or not. That's an interesting question
5:37
It says it can burn on water, but it doesn't say, can I soak it with water
5:43
Let's just drop some water. Immediately, it's really not...it doesn't seem like it's soaking up the water
5:51
It's kind of repelling it. So that's interesting. I think what we'll do is we'll start it with the old handy dandy Boy Scout ferro rod, the
6:08
hot spark. Not doing much there
6:24
It's not really taking a spark. Okay. So that means you have to have a butane lighter to light this
6:57
Nothing. Okay
7:57
Got a bigger pile. And that's a dry. That's dry out of the package
8:02
So getting it wet, it seems like it slowed it down or hampered it
8:12
Okay, wet wood. Make a little brace, put some of these wet sticks on here
8:47
This one's really wet. Alright, so it's still burning
9:10
I don't know. I don't know about this stuff. I don't know if I like it or not
9:15
I mean, I can see an advantage to it where you would just dump this out, like the whole
9:20
pouch, if you're trying to get a fire going and you were cold and wet and you just wanted
9:26
to get something going right away. So you dump it on the ground, quickly add sticks to it and get the fire going that way
9:34
But, you know, that little small amount didn't work very well. It doesn't take a spark
9:39
It only took an open flame, which is kind of a problem because it means you have to
9:46
carry a fire source anyway with you, like a lighter. You can't use a fire steel
9:51
So that's kind of a problem. And then I think the other issue with this thing is, it's like, what am I supposed to
9:58
do if I don't use the whole package? You know what I mean
10:04
I've got this whole, I've got this empty, I've got this open package now that I have
10:08
to deal with. I mean, I could certainly close it shut and put it in a baggie or something, but it's
10:14
just kind of strange. So the ferro rod really didn't work
10:29
Lighter worked starting it, but it took some time. It's going now
10:42
It's got the wood going, which is good. It's a nice wet piece of wood right there
10:50
It's a nice wet piece of wood right there. It's a nice wet piece of wood right there
11:25
It's a nice wet piece of wood right there. It's a nice wet piece of wood right there
11:49
Alright, so my final thoughts on this product, to me it's a thumbs down
11:56
I just don't see the need for it. There's lots of other fire starting stuff out there that you can have in your kit that's
12:04
probably a lot more smaller and not so finicky and doesn't require special packaging once
12:13
you're done with it. So, I don't know. I would go out, you know, for a dollar go and try it and see what you think, but for
12:19
me it's like, eh, it was a gimmick. I tried it. I'm done
12:23
I mean, petroleum cotton balls, you know cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly actually work
12:30
way better, burn a long time, and just, you know, burn very hot and do a nice job getting
12:38
a fire started. So, I would prefer those over this product. So, thumbs down on the Instafire
12:45
Rain's coming down now. I just got out of the woods and beat it, so I'm going to head home
12:51
