Hey YouTube, I prepared to wander out in the woods today and it is bitter cold today
0:48
It is 19 degrees. We had a fresh layer of snow yesterday and it is freezing
0:56
Probably doesn't seem like a lot for some people I know who live farther north but for
1:01
Ohio 19 it is pretty bitter. What I want to do today is I want to come out here and show you something I have been
1:08
working on and that I think is kind of interesting and also kind of important
1:14
I wanted to show you a vehicle go bag. I have done videos in the past on get home bags and day lot bags and things like that
1:26
One thing I feel like I have always kind of struggled with is really putting together
1:31
something that is complete and that really made sense. Sometimes they were way over packed or the gear was just not maybe the best or the best
1:40
thought out. So I am trying to always improve my thought process and I learn a lot from the people
1:47
who post good comments below. Not necessarily the negative stuff but a lot of the good stuff you can learn from each
1:55
other and just watching other people how they do things on YouTube has really helped me
2:02
One thing I wanted to do is I really wanted to scale down my go bag for my car
2:06
To me a go bag is going to be something that you take with you always, it is always in
2:11
your vehicle and it is there for any kind of emergency that you have to leave that vehicle
2:18
and go somewhere else. Hopefully it won't be something where you have to hike too far but you may have to
2:26
It can also be used as a secondary bushcraft hiking bag let's say if you are on a trip
2:32
and you forget all your gear or you don't have any gear with you and someone decides hey let's go out and do something out in the woods
2:38
You have at least got some preparedness with you so you are not caught off guard
2:43
I think that happens to a lot of people that get out in the woods, they go for hikes in areas that they are very unfamiliar with when they are on vacation
2:50
They get lost, they get dehydrated, they get injured, whatever they are not prepared and
2:56
unfortunately they become fatalities or at least a blip on the news
3:01
So I want to try to avoid that as much as possible. I always want to have some basics that I am very familiar with, with me
3:09
Things like ways to start a fire, ways to make a shelter, ways to collect water, maybe
3:14
some food, just some things that are always a necessity when I am out in the woods on
3:20
a hike either if it is unprepared or prepared. That is the whole point of this is just getting that bag down to a reasonable size that I
3:29
am going to actually keep it in my car and not worry about it. It is going to have the essentials but not too much stuff
3:36
This isn't packing for the apocalypse, it is packing for day to day needs and keeping
3:43
it at that. So that is what we are going to get into. I am going to open up this new bag, I am going to show you what is inside of it, what my
3:48
thought process is and then in the comments below leave some feedback of things that you
3:54
think that you would add or maybe do a little bit differently. I think there are always different ways of doing things
4:02
You can pack everything that you can think of but at some point you have to have a limit
4:06
and that is what we are going to look at is the limit that I have come up with. So stick around
4:11
So what we are looking at today is this bag right here
4:15
This is something that I found on eBay. I had no knowledge of this thing before
4:21
I don't really know a ton about it but a little research I did do, I found out that this is
4:27
a piece of military gear that is in use right now. This is a military aviation go bag or pilots go bag
4:41
What it is designed for is to be strapped into a helicopter so that when a pilot goes
4:47
down they have some basic survival gear that they can grab off of their chopper and get
4:53
out in the field. I found this on eBay like I said
4:57
Very cheap. It's brand spanking new. It is way over built like most military gear
5:06
It's heavy duty. I believe it's probably 1000D Cordura, Fasttech buckles, really good nylon webbing
5:13
This thing is just built like a tank. Big heavy duty beefy zippers
5:19
See that? That's really nice. This is definitely a bag that's going to last, it's going to outlast me
5:25
The pouch in the front, this has not come with it. This is actually a Maxpedition pouch that they no longer make unfortunately
5:32
This is the wide load admin that I picked up and put on the front of this
5:37
I thought that would be a nice addition because the front of this bag is all MOLLE
5:41
So it's a good place to put additional pouches and organizers to help with the gear distribution
5:48
The great thing about this bag is that it's designed to have backpack straps with a sternum
5:58
strap so that's good. So it carries well when you hike with it and you can distribute the load pretty well
6:06
But also you can take these backpack straps and unbuckle them and then hide them inside
6:11
this panel right here and that helps keep the bag more slick
6:16
And the other option too is there's straps inside here that if I unbuckle this, if I
6:26
unbuckle that right there, this strap will come out and then now this strap can go, be
6:37
strapped around a piece of equipment to hang it from. So I've seen pictures of these hung from the ceilings of helicopters and that's what
6:48
these straps are for. But the great thing is that there's also kind of a dual purpose to this strap
6:56
Is that it creates a strap on the bottom of the pack so if I wanted to strap some gear
7:01
to the bottom of the pack I can do that. So definitely multi-purpose
7:06
Alright, so the front pouch of the bag
7:15
Let's go through what I have in here. This is a basic organizational pouch, admin pouch
7:33
See that? Get a lot of gear in there. Okay, so I've got a notebook, bright and rain pen, along with that bright and rain notebook
7:54
I have a compass. This is a nice Sunto base plate
8:05
Really necessary to have something like that. I have a Petzl headlamp
8:15
Gerber multi-tool. I have a signal mirror with a whistle
8:27
Two butane lighters
8:50
Arrow rod
8:59
This really nice little field manual that I got from ACW Tactical
9:05
This is their little survival manual. It's a pocket survival manual. It's kind of neat
9:09
And it's also got a magnifying glass built into it. Measuring device and then I added a tick identification card for the summer
9:19
We have a lot of ticks around here. This goes back there
9:24
That's all in the front pouch. Okay, you notice on the side of this bag there are three Fastex buckles for compression
9:36
And these you can tuck into these little webbing slots right here
9:44
See that? And you can buckle all those and you're able to rip the bag open pretty far
10:03
It doesn't completely clamshell open but it's not bad. So, first thing I have in here is a Frontier Pro water filter
10:14
This you can drink from it or hook it up to a platypus and then fill it with clean water that way
10:24
So, water filtration. Got that covered. Got some basic food. Some Clif bars and some Clif shots
10:34
Some basic nutrition to keep me going. Some fuel. Cutting tool. A knife
10:43
I picked the SE3 because it's full tang. It's a proven blade
10:48
I've used this many, many years. It's a great knife. Gets a lot of good use out of it and it works
10:56
It works perfectly. It's easy to sharpen. It's comfortable in the hand
11:00
It's big enough for most tasks but small enough that it's not going to take up a lot of room or be super heavy
11:06
Alright. Next item I keep in here is an Adventure Metal Kit Ultra Light 0.7 First Aid Kit
11:14
Now, this kit is pretty complete but I added a few things like a pair of miniature EMT shears, some additional bandages, medications, things like that
11:28
But it's definitely a very complete first aid kit for most wounds
11:35
Certainly not anything huge like trauma type stuff but it will take care of a lot
11:42
And here I have my Apostles Pouch which basically just has all the necessary items that I need just thrown in here to keep them organized and from floating around in the bag
11:54
Now, this pouch that I have here, this is something that I actually kind of made
11:59
What I did is I took a US Military First Aid Kit, the tri-fold kind, the corpsman's bag and I cut all the pouches off of it
12:08
So, the pouches now are individual. So, this is the main pouch. It makes a great ditty bag
12:13
So, in here I've got a wire saw. This is the military issue which is better of the wire saws that are out there on the market
12:23
I have a roll of duct tape. Bright Safety Orange. I've got some hand warmers since we're in the Midwest
12:31
It does get cold here a lot. Headlamp that runs off standard AAA batteries
12:39
Something that I can find easily out in the wild. I'm at a gas station or wherever they're easy to find
12:45
CR123s aren't always easy to find so I like to stick with AA's or AAA's
12:51
Match safe with waterproof matches from Ukko. Light sticks. Military Surplus Light Stick Holder
13:06
This allows you to turn it on and off by opening the window. So, you can control the amount of light you're using and what people can see
13:16
Here's a Pro Force Equipment Divvy Bag. So, basically it's kind of a sleeping bag setup that's thermal
13:23
It's a mylar blanket type bag. Big hunk of 550 cord. And some large zip ties
13:43
So, there's that. I also keep... Poncho in here. This is the US Military USGI Woodland Camo Poncho
13:58
So, now I have a means of also protecting myself from the rain but also making a shelter of some sort
14:05
Because, I'm going to be camping in the rain. Making a shelter of some sort
14:13
Because, the thing that we're sitting on is the US Military Mylar Blanket
14:20
Space Blanket. And they call them casualty blankets but for the civilian market it's going to be just a standard mylar blanket, thermal blanket
14:29
And that way I can lay that on the ground. That can be my ground sheet. This can be my tarp
14:34
550 cord I can set it up with. Zip ties, duct tape if I need to repair something
14:40
And then enough equipment to start a fire and filter some water and have some food
14:46
Now, is it the most luxurious equipment in the world? No. I don't have a pot
14:51
I don't have a lot of food that I can cook. I don't have a thermal pad
14:56
There's things that are definitely lacking in this kit. But the idea is that this is something that you're going to grab and you're going to go
15:02
And you're going to hike. And you're not going to be spending a lot of time being comfortable and sleeping and things like that
15:10
You're going to be on the move. And hopefully it's not going to be very long. It's only going to be a day or so out in the field
15:16
So that's why I like the size of this bag. It limits how much stuff I can carry
15:22
I'm not carrying a ton of gear. I'm carrying exactly what I need and no more and no less
15:28
There's a little bit of room left in here to add a few items if I need to
15:32
But for the most part it's packed pretty tight. But it has everything I think I need to get me through a rough situation
15:40
At least it's a basis for it. Alright guys
15:52
That is it for today. It is freezing cold. I am going to get out of here
15:57
Go home. Get warmed up. Do some chores. Do some video editing
