0:02
hey folks welcome back to the prepared
0:04
wanderer today we're diving into
0:06
something that can literally mean the
0:09
difference between life and death
0:11
signaling devices and survival kits from
0:13
mirrors signal panels to strobes we're
0:16
asking the big question do they actually
0:19
work well stick around we've got real
0:22
statistics real world examples and I'll
0:25
even demonstrate a few of these in
0:59
each year in the United States more than
1:01
3,000 search and rescue SAR missions are
1:04
carried out by the National Park Service
1:06
alone that doesn't include state and
1:09
local operations the real number is far
1:12
higher according to the MPS over 75% of
1:15
these rescued are hikers or day trippers
1:18
folks who didn't expect to get into
1:21
trouble in a survival situation
1:24
signaling is critical you might have
1:27
shelter you might have water but if you
1:29
can't be found you're not going to go
1:31
home anytime soon and here's the harsh
1:34
truth most rescues rely on being seen or
1:39
heard not found by accident
2:24
signal panels colors contrast with
2:27
natural surroundings bright panels or
2:29
even your tent fly can be used to draw
2:31
attention from air or land but as we see
2:34
in this demonstration even the best
2:37
military survival signal
2:40
panel doesn't show up that well when it
2:43
starts getting into the 400t range the
2:46
pink side does far better than the
2:49
orange side as you can tell in this
3:07
i could see you waving but I couldn't
3:09
see the mirror really
3:37
on a sunny day a signal mirror can be
3:39
seen from over 10 miles away that's what
3:41
they say but the problem is they take
3:45
practice and they don't always work when
3:48
you're signaling directly above to a
3:50
passing airplane or helicopter they tend
3:53
to work better when you're signaling
3:55
across a long distance in a more flatter
3:58
plane as you can see in this video the
4:01
signal mirror is barely visible at 400
4:05
ft and I would suspect that a pilot
4:08
passing by may not see this
4:14
movement so here's a signal mirror that
4:16
was actually used for the demonstration
4:19
that you see on video this is from um
4:22
Stay Ready Gear uh this came with the
4:25
survival kits that I've been reviewing
4:26
of theirs and it is a very standard um
4:31
style signal mirror it has an aiming
4:35
device in the center lanyard hole and
4:37
then instructions on the back now how
4:40
you use these is very simple is that
4:43
you're angling the mirror um towards the
4:46
sun um and catching that light and
4:49
angling it towards the uh helicopter or
4:53
airplane that you're trying to get
4:54
attention so if you can actually see
4:56
that what you do is you put your hand um
5:00
up in front of it kind of aim it and
5:02
then um using the mirror you reflect the
5:05
light until you see the light on the on
5:08
your hand and then you move your hand so
5:10
that's kind of a simple way of doing it
5:13
um and I was actually doing that trying
5:16
to locate the drone and aim the light
5:18
towards it but as you can see in the
5:20
videos um you know during bright bright
5:23
daylight uh it was not getting much
5:26
reflection back and I don't know why i
5:29
don't know if it's a technique issue um
5:32
or I don't I certainly don't think it's
5:34
the mirror's fault because it's just a
5:36
mirror signal mirrors do have a place in
5:38
your kit you just have to know how to
5:39
use them and you should be practicing
5:41
with them um and try different ones
5:43
there's uh a lot of different sizes and
5:45
shapes mini ones larger ones uh military
5:49
civilian but they all do essentially the
7:21
the buzzsaw signal device is basically
7:24
just a glow stick or light stick that
7:28
you attach to a string and you spin it
7:30
above your head and this is a way of
7:32
signaling to um passing helicopters um a
7:35
lot of times this is used as a signaling
7:38
method for a helicopter to land it's
7:41
very effective uh in the right
7:43
conditions and it's very easy to make
7:46
here we're just setting one up and of
7:48
course doesn't weigh very much and it's
7:50
a very easy thing to add to your kit and
7:54
can be used in a variety of ways
11:31
so do signaling devices and survival
11:33
kits actually work the answer is a
11:36
resounding yes but only if you carry
11:38
them and know how to use them and you
11:42
limitations all right guys if you found
