In today's video, I'm going to show you a new backpack I just got from Halicontex
0:04
This is the Halicontex Bergen. It's the perfect bushcraft day pack. I know I've said that before, but let's take a look and see what you guys think
0:13
Stick around. Alright, if you guys follow the channel, you know that there is always a plethora of gear
0:42
that I'm showing, and I've been told that a lot of guys spend a lot of money after they
0:50
watch my videos, so I apologize. I know I'm an enabler, but I like to show you guys a lot of the different options that
0:57
are out there, and I've been on a quest lately for really just a good backpack that I can
1:04
take out during the day for bushcrafting and camping, overnights when it's warmer
1:13
I guess consider that my summer bag, something that I can just throw my tarp and hammock
1:22
and some food and water and hit the trail. I've tried a lot of different ones, and I've come up short
1:30
Some of them have just not had the options or the features that I like, and reviewed
1:37
some great ones, and they're still great choices, but this particular pack, this Bergen from
1:43
Helikon-Tex, or Helikon-Tex, is really checking all the boxes for me right now
1:50
I'm going to show you the features of this bag and then let you guys decide what you
1:56
think because I feel it's really a great place to start with a backpack, and the options
2:05
and features are just amazing. All right, I'm going to sit down next to the pack and go through some of the features with you
2:13
First of all, it is made from Cordura, so definitely quality material
2:18
It's going to stand up to any kind of abuse you throw right out in the woods
2:24
Quality stitching all throughout, good webbing and buckles, everything's sewn very nicely
2:31
What I like about this bag so much, in this Bergen style, European style ruck, is that
2:38
all the tools and water and things that I need to get to are on the outside of the pack
2:43
and not on the inside. A lot of the packs that I've been experimenting with lately, that has been the flaw
2:50
I have a lot of things on the inside and it makes it really difficult to get to things that I need
2:56
For a bushcraft day pack or a summer overnight bag, I want to be able to get to certain things quickly
3:05
Like I showed, hanging my pack on the tree, I want to be able to get to stuff easily
3:12
especially my tools. So right off the bat, first thing is that this pocket has a pass-through tunnel and
3:22
that is going to allow you to carry hatchets, axes, and long-handled tomahawks
3:28
It goes all the way through. The side pockets also have pass-through pockets as well, so you can carry multiple items with
3:37
you that are long. Another feature about this that is nice is there is a pocket sewn in here and here
3:48
These two on the side are not pass-through. They're sewn at the bottom
3:53
What they're intended for is a place to slip your knife in a sheath or put your saw
3:59
That's what I've done here. I've got my Bako Laplander saw on the side
4:06
Fits in there perfectly. So I've added these Grimlock clips to the side, to the webbing
4:12
That way, when I put my saw in here and I run the lanyard through that Grimlock and
4:18
then I close it, it's going to lock it. And then over here, I've got my gloves clipped in because these are something I want to get
4:24
to quickly. The front pocket here is very good size, perfect place for my Possibles pouch
4:33
You may want to check out that video. I did that not too long ago, but this is that Maxpedition, I think, the Beefy Organizer
4:41
Slides right in there. Slides right in there perfectly. And that's where I keep all of my fire-starting equipment and survival stuff
5:01
The side pockets is what I love about this pack as well because they fit a full-size
5:07
water bottle and canteen and a cook pot as well. There's plenty of room
5:14
And what they've done is they've also added drain holes on the bottom of the pockets
5:19
which is fantastic. You can see here on this, these pockets holds a full-size water bottle, no problem
5:29
That's a 32-ounce. And a nesting cup will fit in there as well
5:33
I've got my cook pot on that side. So it all works really well because I typically don't carry a hydration bladder
5:43
I like water bottles better because they don't take up as much room inside my pack
5:49
So having the water bottle on the outside, for me, is critical
5:56
Moving to the top, we've got webbing loops so you can put something on the top of the
6:02
pack like a bedroll or a pad or a jacket. Velcro field for your patches
6:09
And then if you open this lid up, it has elastic built in the sides
6:15
So that's going to stay down and provide some protection for the contents
6:21
But on top of that, there are two drawstring collars. So you've got one on the outside and one on the inside
6:33
And that's really a great way of keeping the contents protected and secure and dry
6:42
Now once you get on the inside of the pack, there is a small pocket with a zipper
6:49
And I've just got some wipes in there. And then if you pull this up, there is a hanger for your hydration bladder
7:01
There's a pocket for the hydration bladder. And there is a pocket back here, but this houses the frame sheet
7:09
And that's going to help give that some rigidity, make the pack nice and comfortable, and helps
7:16
it stand up. So I love frame sheets on this size of a 20 liter backpack
7:20
It works perfectly. The bottom of the pack, there is webbing, so you can secure a pad of some sort
7:54
You know, a sleeping pad, or a blanket, or a sleeping bag, or whatever
7:59
And here's the back. So right off the bat, you can tell that this is really well thought out
8:06
So what they've done is they've sewn in padding in three sections
8:13
And there's a channel that runs up and down, and that's going to give you some airflow
8:20
And the padding is not overly done, but it's enough that you do not feel the contents of
8:24
the bag while you're hiking. It was a very comfortable bag to wear hiking back here
8:31
The shoulder straps are cut with a curve to them, so that's going to hug your body nicely
8:40
Makes it very comfortable. The sternum strap is adjustable. You can move this up and down
8:45
It also has some stretch to it, so it's not strangling you
8:50
And then quick release buckles to take the straps off. And then another feature, this bag does come with a hip belt
8:57
It's not a supportive belt, but it is more of a stabilization belt, and that easily comes off
9:03
I don't use belts for packs of this size. Doesn't make sense for me
9:08
So it's just a strap, so I just took it off. But if you need to use that, you can
9:17
And then the last feature on this bag, which I didn't even know it had until I started
9:23
messing with it, but if you undo this, then you'll notice there's a collar right here
9:30
Well, that's not sewn down. That is a flap. And that has webbing built into it, so if you wanted to attach a small pouch, you could
9:42
Or this would be a great place for carabiners or those Grimlocks, so you can hang other
9:46
additional items off your pack if that's what you want to do
9:50
So it just gives you more cargo capability, more options. That all folds down
10:07
And I really like how the cover on this is kind of three-dimensional
10:13
It's not just a flap. So once you put that cover down, it hugs the top of the pack, it goes down all around it
10:21
and it protects the contents from any kind of moisture getting inside. There it is
11:09
I'm just going to throw this on for you
11:20
Very easy to get on and off. And I think that's because the material on the inside of the straps and the back is kind
11:27
of a smooth material, so it goes on very quickly and very easily
11:38
And I can tighten that or loosen that as much as I want
11:45
It's hanging more. It's a little bit tighter. I usually like it nice and tight
11:58
So I'm a pretty good-sized guy, 6'1". And you can see how this fits me
12:09
Would make a really fantastic summer weekend pack, especially if you're like hammock camping, perfect
12:18
Because you'd be able to get a tarp, your hammock, and a change of clothes and some
12:24
food and then all your tools and your water and stuff on the outside of the pack
12:28
You'd be able to do it, no problem. But for me, it really has a great application as a day hiking pack
12:35
I can keep this thing loaded up with all my gear. And then when I head out to the woods, grab it, and I've got everything I need
12:42
I'm not compromising any way
13:31
All right, guys, I am going to get out of here. Thank you so much for watching the video
