What's up YouTube? Prepared Wanderer at my home today and I wanted to do a quick
0:06
video for you today and show you something that I put together I think
0:09
you're gonna find kind of interesting. This is a miniature portable mini small
0:15
fire kit that you can take with you anywhere. Fits easily in a bag or in your
0:21
pocket and fire kits are always fun to put together and they're always so
0:27
necessary when going out in the woods and stuff. I just, you know, I'm always
0:31
using my fire kit to start a fire and for a situation where you get yourself
0:37
in trouble where you may need to spend the night in the woods a fire is
0:41
essential. So having a miniature kit with you that you can throw in your day pack
0:45
or in your front pocket or cargo pocket is really important. So we're going to
0:50
look at mine today. This is it. So stay tuned. All right here is the mini fire kit and the first thing you notice on the
1:03
outside of the fire kit that I have is one of these fire steels, these mini fire
1:08
steels and it has a cut off hacksaw blade and the reason for that is the
1:15
hacksaw blade is going to be your striker. This particular ferro rod and it
1:20
doesn't matter which one you use you can whatever which one you can find that you can get attached to your kit is perfectly fine. This one actually has
1:29
magnesium stick to it so I can scrape that off. If I take this apart I could
1:35
scrape that off and strike that ferro rod. It's got a pretty good split
1:42
ring on it for holding it all together. I want to take this apart I want to
1:50
show you how much this sparks because I think that's important that you can at least see how how well it sparks. See if I can get this off here for you
2:05
Sparks pretty well. Really decent little ferro rod, miniature ferro rod. Now I
2:14
can't remember where I got this one at. I would look around at different companies
2:21
online. I should have these. I can't remember what it's called. I apologize
2:27
I've had this for years. I have several of these and I think they've come in kits
2:31
and things and I've repurposed them. But that hacksaw blade does a really nice
2:37
job of throwing sparks and then of course you know you can scrape off the
2:41
magnesium that way. So there's that. Now what really makes this kit so
2:52
comprehensive is the size of it. It's a really nice size vial and this
2:57
particular container I've looked online and I found them, a source of these at a
3:04
company called Survival Resources. I'll put a link down below so you can get them
3:08
I have no affiliation with them so this is gonna be free advertising for those
3:13
guys but I think it's a really nice container and I can't seem to find them
3:18
anywhere else so unless if you guys can figure out where maybe they're also sold
3:22
at let me know. First thing what I did is I put a bicycle inner tube around the
3:28
container. Now that helps with keeping the container waterproof but it is a
3:38
fire starter as well as you all know bicycle inner tube, the rubber material
3:44
cut off little bits and pieces of it and it makes a really nice fire starter. Now
3:49
on this what I can do is I can roll down that inner tube material and expose the
4:00
lid. Now this is gasketed which makes it waterproof already. There's the gasket so
4:14
that's gonna help a lot keeping the water out and as you look inside this is
4:19
all the stuff that I'm carrying in this little fire kit. First thing is a mini
4:24
Bic lighter. Next are Strike Anywhere matches. These are the real deal Strike
4:38
Anywhere matches. I actually hoarded a couple boxes of these before they stopped
4:43
making them and I still have a bunch of them so these are going in my fire kits. I also took a
4:50
lifeboat match and cut it down. I just cut the end of it off so it would fit this
4:58
container. These are usually too big for this container but I wanted to at least
5:03
have one of those in there because those last a lot longer than the Strike Anywhere. I also have a striking pad from a matchbox that way I have something to strike the matches on
5:24
and I don't have to sit there and try to figure it out to do it on a rock or something. Next
5:30
little trick in the fire kit is this birthday candle and what makes this birthday candle
5:35
unique is that is the I believe is a trick birthday candle
5:40
So it's kind of hard to blow out
6:02
So you can either get the trick kind or the regular kind but a candle in your pack
6:16
a birthday candle or a trick birthday candle really makes a nice fire starter. It's something
6:21
you can light and then set underneath your twig bundle and forget about it and let it do its
6:27
business. So that's another little trick for you. And then in the back here I have a baggie
6:37
with these little quick tenders and these are basically just a cotton swab that have been
6:45
impregnated with a material either a Vaseline type material or petroleum base of some sort
6:52
So these fluffed up hit with that spark are going to produce a nice long lasting
7:00
flame and be able to get a twig bundle going because that's really the whole purpose of
7:06
this is to get a small fire started. You're not going to be able to start something really big
7:11
but a but a twig bundle is what you're going to work with and then once you get that going
7:17
then you can start adding your larger pieces of wood. So that's really it. There's not much to it
7:23
but there's enough little things in here that can help me get a fire going in case of emergency
7:30
It's definitely not something I'm going to use every day. This is a backup to a main fire kit
7:37
a good fire steel, a good set of tender man-made tenders. You know this is just a backup. This is
7:48
something I'm going to keep in my pocket or I'm going to throw in the bottom of my pack and just kind of forget about it. But when I need it I'm going to have it. All right guys
