And what is up, Wanderers
0:28
I'm here to wander around the woods and I want to show you a lightweight hiking survival
0:36
kit that I think anybody can put together and will hopefully help you if you're out
0:42
on the trail. So stick around. I don't know what it is about survival kits that I love putting together and messing with
0:51
I'm always thinking of new ways of coming up with different ways of carrying survival
0:56
kits and where they can go, how they can be utilized the best
1:01
And this idea, though it's not really a new idea, really came from one of the Facebook
1:08
group guys on my Facebook group on Prepared Wanderer. Ken Berry came up with this kit that he put together based on this Ozark Trail fanny pack
1:20
that he found at Walmart. And I've had this pack, this particular one, for a while now
1:27
I picked it up at one of the stores and it was super cheap, under $10
1:32
So I threw it in the cart and I never used it, never utilized it. It's been sitting in my gear box
1:38
And then I saw his post, how he loaded it up, and it really made a lot of sense to me
1:43
It kind of all came together in my mind. It's like, yes, this is perfect for a lightweight hiking kit
1:51
You can grab and go, hit the trail with friends and family or solo, and have essentials with
1:56
you in case something happens, in case of that unplanned emergency, that unplanned overnight
2:04
That stuff can always happen. It can happen to the best of us
2:08
So I really liked his thinking and how he showed it. And it really, like I said, sparked that idea for me
2:14
So I'm going to take you through what I've put together based on his post. All right, here it is
2:19
So this is my lightweight hiking survival kit. And the belt pack idea, fanny pack, whatever you want to call it, I think is a great way
2:32
to go because it reduces weight. You get away from carrying too much stuff
2:40
And particularly in the summertime, when it's warmer, you're more likely to carry this
2:46
especially if you're just doing light trails, maybe dog trails or metro parks, places like that
2:54
But you can still carry some essentials with you. So like I said, Ozark Trail, Walmart, under $10
3:02
If I had to guess, I think it was around seven something. I'll have a link down below for that
3:07
And then what I did is, since it didn't have any way of carrying water, I bought this pouch
3:13
on Walmart. Once again, around $10. It's a MOLLE water pouch, water bottle pouch
3:22
Fits a full size 32 ounce Nalgene. It has a mesh bottom, so if the bottle is sweating, that'll run off
3:30
And then it's got just MOLLE snaps back here and I'm running the belt through that
3:40
And then a D-ring and then it cinches up. So it's nothing fancy
3:46
It's certainly not the most expensive piece of gear, but it will do what it's supposed
3:50
to do, holding a water bottle for this application. So on the outside of the bag, I put this little ThruNite T12 mini flashlight
3:57
This just runs on a triple AAA battery. Great little flashlight. Having it on the outside of the zipper, I can find that easily if I need it
4:10
Now this pouch is very simple. There's not a lot to it. So there's a pouch, zipper pouch on the front and there's no organization in here, but I
4:18
have a few essential items. I've assembled a first aid kit. You gotta have that
4:24
And it's got MOLLE skin, tape, band-aids, antiseptic wipes. There's a splinter remover
4:32
Just various items to help with blisters, cuts, scrapes when on the trail
4:45
Basic land navigation. Asento wrist compass. It's accurate. It works and it will help out in determining direction if your cell phone's not working
4:57
So always great to have some kind of compass as a backup
5:02
Of course, Gorilla Tape. Hundreds of uses. Can also use it to tape up your feet if you get blisters
5:12
So always have some kind of duct tape or Gorilla Tape with you in your hiking kit
5:18
Just a write and read notebook to take notes, to leave notes, especially if you're plotting
5:24
a course. You may need this as assistance, so having that is, I think, a really awesome item to have
5:32
Of course, Blistex. Lip balm is such an underrated item in any survival or medical kit
5:41
I don't know how many times I've been out without Blistex or lip balm and my lips have
5:47
become chapped because of the wind or the sun and it has ruined my day
5:51
It has made me miserable. I don't know what it is, but I like to have lip balm with me when I'm doing stuff outside
5:58
It really helps a lot and makes just for a better day
6:06
Nice inexpensive lightweight multi-tool. I picked this up at Cabela's and for the size, it's pretty decent
6:15
I like it because it's spring-loaded, so if I have to get a splinter out or a hook if
6:20
I'm fishing or whatever, I can do that and it's got some decent usable tools
6:27
They're not the greatest. Small knife blade, so that's good for digging out splinters
6:31
A couple of different screwdrivers for repairing stuff. And then scissors, which is always a fantastic item cutting moleskin
6:43
I think there's a can opener in here. Yeah, can opener, bottle opener
6:51
And then the only kind of oddball item that I think is kind of weird is it has this little saw and it's so small I don't know what you really do with it, but it's got one
7:00
A little multi-tool is handy and I like stuff with pliers as opposed to just a Victorinox
7:09
Swiss Army knife. That's really all in the front pouch. When I get in here, I picked up one of these
7:24
This is the Survival Blanka from SOL. This is the one- to two-person
7:30
You know, it's the right size for this size pack. It's not overly big
7:36
It will help keep you warm and dry. You can use this as a shelter or you can crawl into it as a bag
7:43
It's got several options, as you can see. Just a really nice, lightweight bag
7:48
But of course, once you use this, you're done with it, you're going to throw it away
7:53
It's disposable, but it's a great backup item to have for a shelter of some sort
7:58
Of course, paracord. You've got to have some paracord. You know, if you're tying up a shelter like that poncho and you want to turn it into a
8:08
shelter, you can do that with this. You can take a couple branches and tie those together to create an A-frame or lean to to
8:16
huddle under. So having cordage is key. Another light source item
8:26
This is just a glow stick. I picked this up, I think, at Walmart in the Halloween section one year
8:33
These are great to have. Great for marking your position. Hang that in a tree
8:38
So if search teams are looking for you at night, they will see this and they will come
8:42
to your rescue. Now the knife option I kind of struggled with
8:52
I really didn't know, I couldn't decide what I wanted to put in here
8:56
I thought about putting a small fixed blade, like an Azulu from ESEE, or a 3, or maybe
9:03
something else that I have. I have a few neck knife options that would fit in this pack
9:08
But I found this the other day and I was really surprised at the quality of this for the money
9:14
This is an Ozark Trail knife. Of course it is a made in China special
9:20
It has that axis lock system that Benchmade came up with, so it's kind of a knockoff
9:27
But it has a nice smooth open. It's sharpened up pretty well
9:33
I just took it to my Sharpmaker and put an edge back on it and it's a sturdy little pocket
9:40
knife and I think for a hiking kit it will be fine. It's not super expensive, so if I lose it or break it, I don't care
9:47
But that's that one and this is like a $6 knife at Walmart right now
9:51
You can find these in the blister packs. So that's my knife option
9:56
And now this really, we get into the meat and potatoes of this bag
10:01
These are various items that I've received or got from 5 Calls to Survival Supply
10:05
You can get these at other places as well. These are just, you know, give you an idea of options to carry
10:12
So the first thing is I have everything in a lock sack, right
10:16
Lock sack is going to keep it waterproof, keep the contents from getting messed up
10:23
You are going to want some matches. These are store matches. That's from UCO
10:30
So it's their survival storm proof matches. So a pack of those
10:36
You want several ways to start a fire. Of course a mini Bic
10:41
Got that. Got water purification tablets and I've got the Whirl Bags to put the tabs in so I can
10:57
treat water in these bags and then drink from that or add that to my water bottle
11:02
So water purification, great item to have. Love this little item. I showed this in another video
11:08
This is from 5 Call. This is a military flexible survival saw, wire saw
11:16
It's 16 inches and this thing is not the cheap crappy wire saws you get in the Chinese survival kits
11:26
This is a military issue survival saw. This thing has teeth on it. It will cut and just the ability to cut wood I think is a game changer if you're trying
11:39
to spend the night in the woods. So you can make a shelter. You can start a fire with that
11:45
Great item. Some sort of man made fire starting cubes. I got this in some kind of kit
11:55
I don't remember who makes these but any kind of man made fire making kit will suffice
12:02
So cotton balls in Vaseline in a film canister is one of my go to's
12:09
Espot tabs, all kinds of different tinder tabs out there but this is just a tinder tab
12:14
so that will help getting a fire going. And I've got a nice high quality military signal mirror
12:26
This is a heavy duty one. It is not going to break
12:34
I think that's pretty self explanatory what you do with that. And then we've got some accessory cordage just for tying things so you don't lose them
12:49
like the knife or the multi tool. I can tie that around my neck or whatever and not lose it
12:55
Here is my pen for my notebook. This is write and rain
13:01
I love this little guy because it doesn't take up any room and you've got a nice size
13:09
pen to work with and then just put that in there. Great item
13:16
Of course a whistle. You've got to have a whistle. We have the spark light fire kit
13:26
These are awesome. It comes packed with these tinder tabs and then you've got a little sparking tool to
13:33
start the tinder tabs with. This little hard container to keep everything protected
13:46
And then just a folding surgical style razor blade. A lot of different uses for that obviously but it's just another cutting tool option
13:57
for you. You can use that for medical or for other emergencies
14:02
So that is really it. That is the kit. So that's it for the lightweight kit
14:09
You know the whole point of this is something that you actually will take with you
14:15
I think that's always the challenge with a lot of people. Why they don't take kits with them
14:21
I mean it was just recently, I think this past week a woman died out west hiking
14:28
She got caught in some kind of situation at night hiking a trail with her husband
14:35
He went and looked for help and by the time he got back to her she was gone
14:40
It was all because of weather, drop in temperature. She wasn't prepared for the conditions, not dressed appropriately, didn't have enough
14:48
stuff with her. If she had possibly one of these lightweight bivy bags like I showed, maybe it means starting
14:58
a fire. She may have stayed warm. It may have made a difference. I don't know
15:02
I'm not really going to quarterback the situation but these kits do help and they may save your life
15:13
So why risk it? Hope this helped you out. Helped you guys out
