Moving Day: Keep Your Plants Safe while Moving

Feb 19, 2026
It's moving day! So that means I need to pack my plants up and get them ready for the long drive ahead of me. Packing up your plants is a lot like rearranging your indoor garden, it's a puzzle you keep working until you get it just right, ensuring all the plants will be safe and sound with minimal foliar damage. I always start with plastic crates that you can buy at the big box stores. And whenever I buy packages online I always keep a few of the sturdiest boxes because I know some day in the future I will need them to keep my plants safe. I like the uniformity of the crates because it helps me load my car more efficiently. For my touchy plants, like my Monstera deliciosa, I put it in a box first, and then into the crate. Having boxes touching each other is a lot safer than ceramic pots touching, in case you hit a bump in the road that causes your pot to crack! And in case you need to leave your plants in the car overnight, the boxes will act like a blanket keeping your plants a bit warmer. When possible, have the foliage of your special plants, like my Philodendron 'Burle Marx' situated within the crate rather than flowing over the edge. This will add another element of safety for your plant. Now that you know how to safely and efficiently pack up your plants, you can move in style and grace!
