Important Late Spring Pruning Method - Chelsea Chop - How To Do It & What Plants To Do It On
Dec 21, 2025
Good gardening, like most activities in life, requires us to have a set of tools that we can employ to create the garden of our dreams. One of the most important tools to have in our gardening bag is an understanding of the Chelsea Chop. This technique can help us get more compact plants that don't require stakes and don't get too leggy, it can extend the flowering season, and/or delay the flowering time of our plants.
This super easy pruning technique is an essential technique that we can use in the late spring with various herbaceous perennials to achieve a look that we want in our garden. In this video I explain what the Chelsea Chop is, which plants appreciate this pruning technique, which plants should not undergo this technique and finally three different ways to use this technique to achieve different outcomes in our gardens. Some plants that respond well include Echinacea, Helenium, Phlox, Upright Sedum, Catmint, Asters, Black Eyed Susan, and many more. #pruning #gardening #garden
