0:11
Good morning, folks. This is Pastor Don
0:14
Golden from Calvary Ministry. As I tell
0:18
you every week, I'm so glad that you're
0:20
here with us to share the word of God
0:24
and to look into those holy words that
0:27
will put strength, character, and
0:31
encouragement into our lives as we live
0:35
and walk before God every day of our
0:39
lives. I would ask you this morning to
0:43
look with me to the book of Exodus and
0:45
we're going to be looking at the person
0:49
of
0:50
Moses. Last week, you remember we talked
0:54
about Joseph and how he faced all the
0:57
difficulties and the trials that he did.
1:00
Well, this week we're going to be
1:02
looking at Moses a little bit farther
1:05
down the road. Here in the pre
1:08
historical perspective, we're talking
1:10
about 3,400
1:14
years ago. So, we're looking at a time
1:17
frame of about 1,400
1:21
BCE
1:22
as they would say. And we're going to
1:25
pick up looking at the life of Moses in
1:28
chapter three of the book of Exodus.
1:33
Now, as a way of preface, all of you are
1:36
familiar with the man Moses. Moses who
1:40
is credited with writing the first five
1:43
books of what we call the Old Testament,
1:47
the Pentitude as it's called by other
1:50
persons, the first five books of the Old
1:54
Testament. But Moses had an amazing
1:58
young life. uh he was born during a time
2:02
when the new Pharaoh after the lifetime
2:05
of Joseph had come to rule and the new
2:09
Pharaoh thought that they were the
2:12
Hebrews were becoming too populous up
2:15
there in the land of Gan. So he put the
2:19
word to the midwives that all male
2:22
children should be killed at birth but
2:25
let the females live. Moses was born to
2:30
a young Hebrew couple and his mother did
2:34
not want to see anything happen to him.
2:38
So she made a basket and she put Moses
2:42
in that basket and she had covered the
2:46
outside of it with a type of tar to
2:49
waterproof it and then she would hide it
2:52
in the banks of the Nile among the
2:54
reeds. and she had her daughter, Moses's
2:58
older sister named Miriam, to keep an
3:01
eye on her to make sure that no harm
3:04
would come to the baby.
3:07
Three or four months go by
3:11
and the sister of Pharaoh is down at the
3:14
Nile River bathing and they hear the
3:18
babe crying. Moses, one of her uh maid
3:23
servants, goes over and looks and finds
3:25
the basket, brings it over and the child
3:30
it is so
3:32
so beautiful that she decides that she
3:36
would like to adopt this child and make
3:40
the child her own son. So Moses going
3:45
goes from being born to Hebrew slaves to
3:49
becoming the adopted son of the sister a
3:54
princess of Egypt, the princess, a
3:57
sister of Pharaoh.
4:00
Now here's the other wrinkle in the
4:02
story. You remember Moses's mother?
4:05
Well, she had put him in there so that
4:07
he would not be killed.
4:10
And Miriam, who was Moses's sister, who
4:14
was watching the babe in the basket,
4:18
goes to the princess of Egypt, Pharaoh's
4:22
sister, and asks her would she'd like to
4:25
have a Hebrew slave woman to nurse the
4:30
child for her. The princess of Egypt
4:34
says, "Yes, I would like to have that
4:37
and let her know that I will give her
4:40
due wages to take care of this child
4:44
until he is old enough to be brought to
4:46
me and I will adopt him as my own son."
4:51
So Moses has to care of his mother, his
4:54
father, his family. The Hebrew
4:57
traditions are being taught to him. And
5:00
when he is of age to move into the house
5:03
of Pharaoh, he is taken to Pharaoh and
5:08
becomes the adopted son of the princess
5:12
of Egypt.
5:16
There's the background on Moses. As
5:19
Moses grows, he looks upon the Hebrew
5:23
people
5:25
where he has come from and he sees the
5:28
hardships that they suffer with daily.
5:32
One day he is out there, he's a young
5:34
man, we don't know how old, but he's
5:37
fully grown. And he sees an Egyptian
5:41
taskmaster
5:43
beating a Hebrew slave, one of his
5:46
brethren.
5:48
And in his response to that situation,
5:52
the drama of it, he takes out a weapon
5:56
of some type, and he kills the Egyptian
6:01
taskmaster and buries him in the sand.
6:06
When the matter becomes known to
6:09
Pharaoh,
6:10
Moses flees for his life. He flees out
6:14
of Egypt from the cities of Rammeses and
6:18
Pitham where the Hebrew people were
6:21
enslaved to make brick for the building
6:24
projects of the Pharaoh. He flees from
6:28
Ramisees and Pitham and he goes to the
6:32
land of Midian on the uh eastern side of
6:37
the Gulf of Aaba
6:39
to the land called Midian.
6:43
There he marries a daughter of the high
6:48
priest and king of Midian
6:52
and has two sons.
6:55
And he is there until he is 80 years
6:59
old. And here's where the time of Moses
7:04
really begins for our purposes. Turn
7:08
with me to Exodus 3 and verse 1. Here's
7:14
Moses. He's been in Midian for some
7:17
time. He's married to the daughter of
7:21
Jethro, who is the priest of Midian. He
7:24
has two sons
7:27
and he is tending the flocks of Jethro.
7:31
Chapter 3, the book of Exodus. Verse
7:34
one, it says there, "Now Moses was
7:38
tending the flock of Jethro, his
7:41
father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And
7:44
he led the flock to the back of the
7:46
desert,
7:48
and came to Horeb, which is the same as
7:51
Cyani, the mountain of God. And the
7:55
angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
7:58
flame of fire from the midst of a bush.
8:03
So he looked, and behold, the bush was
8:06
burning
8:07
with fire, but the bush was not
8:11
consumed. an absolute miracle of God
8:15
calling Moses's attention.
8:18
You know, I think about the way that God
8:21
calls each one of us continually.
8:25
It says in the Bible that God is not
8:29
willing that any of us should perish,
8:32
but all should come to know
8:36
Jesus the Christ as our Lord and our
8:39
Savior
8:40
and that salvation is of God.
8:45
Moses
8:47
turns aside to see this burning bush and
8:52
a voice comes from the bush. We're down
8:56
in verse four now at the end of the
8:59
verse. And the voice from the burning
9:02
bush says, "Moses, Moses."
9:07
Moses responds and says, "Here I am."
9:12
the first words of Moses back to God.
9:16
Here I am.
9:19
Think about it. How God calls to each
9:22
one of us. God has time within the
9:25
scheme and the plan of salvation to draw
9:29
each one of us unto him.
9:34
Moses says, "Here I am."
9:39
Then God says to him,
9:42
"Take the sandals off your feet." This
9:45
is down in verse five. "For the place
9:49
where you stand is holy ground."
9:52
When I think back to the day when God
9:55
put salvation upon my soul, I was just a
10:00
young boy
10:02
and I remember a feeling of
10:05
differentness.
10:08
I remember a feeling of being relieved
10:13
of a feeling of being insecure
10:18
and inadequate
10:20
as a young boy.
10:22
All of a sudden, I felt a strength that
10:25
I had never felt before.
10:29
I'm sure that you as a Christian people
10:32
that are saved and listening to this
10:34
message, you can recall your own time of
10:38
salvation and realize what God said here
10:41
to Moses. The place where on you stand
10:46
is holy ground.
10:51
God continues to talk to Moses. And he
10:55
identifies him not only as that one who
10:58
is talking to Moses, but he says, "I am
11:03
the God of your father, the God of
11:06
Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God
11:09
of Jacob." All that you are in history,
11:14
all that has come to make you what you
11:17
are. All these forefathers who have
11:20
served me, I am coming to you in the
11:24
same way that I came to them.
11:29
It says
11:32
there that Moses responds
11:36
and he hides his face because he feels
11:40
his
11:42
sinfulness, his unworthiness before
11:46
Almighty God.
11:50
God talks to him.
11:54
God talks to us often.
11:57
But God talks to Moses up there in the
12:01
Cyani desert
12:06
there east of the land of Midian where
12:09
he is hurting those sheep and those
12:12
goats and the cattle.
12:14
And God says to Moses,
12:18
"I have surely seen the oppression of my
12:23
people who are in Egypt,
12:28
and I have known their sorrows." See,
12:32
God knows our need long before we do.
12:37
Moses said, "Here I am before God." And
12:41
then God tells him why he is being
12:45
called.
12:47
He says God says I have seen the
12:50
oppression of my people who are in Egypt
12:53
and I know their sorrows.
12:58
Third thing God says to him, I have come
13:02
to deliver them
13:06
out of the hand of the Egyptians
13:10
to bring them up from the land to a good
13:13
and large land to a land flowing with
13:17
milk and honey.
13:21
Now, isn't that the way God is? God
13:24
looks at us. He sees our sinfulness,
13:28
but he's willing to look beyond that to
13:32
deliver us out of our sinfulness and
13:36
deliver us into a place where there is
13:39
an abundance of blessing living in the
13:43
very presence of God and the kingdom of
13:46
God as a child of God with the unseen
13:52
and untold resources.
13:56
of God's kingdom available to us.
14:00
Literally, we go from our sinfulness to
14:03
a place flowing with milk and honey.
14:08
For God has seen our oppression.
14:12
God has seen our oppression.
14:18
Moses at this point becomes like most of
14:21
us.
14:22
Okay. I'm so happy, God, that I'm a
14:26
child of yours. I'm just so happy that
14:29
I'm a child of yours and my sins have
14:32
been forgiven.
14:36
But do you want me to do anything
14:40
cuz I I'm I'm just perfectly happy being
14:43
a child of God.
14:47
And Moses says to God,
14:51
he says, "Who am I that I should go to
14:56
Pharaoh?"
14:57
Because see,
15:00
God has told Moses
15:03
there in the close of verse 10
15:07
that he is to go to Egypt and tell the
15:11
Pharaoh to let the Hebrews go so that
15:16
they can come and worship God in the
15:20
Cyani before Mount Si, before Mount
15:24
Horeb, one and the same.
15:28
Moses has an excuse.
15:31
He says, "Who am I that I should go to
15:34
far Pharaoh?"
15:36
You know, any of us can look at our own
15:38
circumstances and we can say, you know,
15:41
I'm just an everyday worker. I don't
15:44
have a lot of means. I've never achieved
15:47
any notable success. How can I move out
15:52
and serve the will of God? You know, I'm
15:55
just God. All I am is just me.
16:00
Moses says to God, his first objection.
16:05
He says, "Who am I that I should go to
16:09
Pharaoh and that I should bring the
16:13
children of Israel out of Egypt?"
16:20
God says to him
16:23
in the book of Deuteronomy, God says, "I
16:26
will never leave you and I will never
16:28
forsake you." That's also said in the
16:31
book of Hebrews.
16:33
And God says to Moses right here, "I
16:37
will certainly be with you, and this
16:41
shall be a sign to you that I have sent
16:45
you. When you have brought the people
16:48
out of Egypt, you shall serve God on
16:52
this mountain. You're going to bring
16:55
them right here." God says, "I will
16:58
certainly be with you." So the first
17:01
objection of Moses saying, "Who am I
17:03
that I can go? You know, I'm I'm just an
17:07
ordinary shepherd now." And God says,
17:10
"Don't worry about that." He says, "I
17:14
will certainly be with you."
17:18
Then Moses said to God,
17:22
now he's objecting a second time why he
17:25
can't go. Indeed, when I come to the
17:28
children of Israel and say to them, the
17:32
God of your fathers has sent me to you
17:34
and they say unto me, what is his name?
17:39
What shall I say to them? Second time
17:43
that Moses is trying to find a way not
17:48
to go to Pharaoh.
17:50
And God said to Moses in verse 14, "I am
17:55
who I am. Thus you shall say to the
18:00
children of Israel, I am has sent me to
18:06
you. This is my name.
18:12
I have surely visited you and seen what
18:16
is done to you of Egypt. And I have said
18:19
I will bring you up out of the
18:23
affliction
18:25
to the land of Canaan,
18:29
that land that is flowing with milk and
18:33
honey. So God answers Moses on his
18:37
second objection,
18:39
saying, "Well, who should I say is going
18:42
to send me?" Now, why would Moses say
18:45
that? Because you see, Egypt was filled
18:48
with gods.
18:50
They had over 1,500
18:53
different gods that they had
18:56
manufactured to satisfy every need. From
19:00
the rising sun, the sun god raw and a
19:04
moon as they called him to the one who
19:09
dealt with the very death and the end of
19:12
life called Oirus. They had an They had
19:15
a god who controlled the overflow of the
19:19
Nile and the fertility of the land. They
19:22
had over 1,500
19:24
gods to worship in Egypt. And so Moses
19:30
says to God, "Who should I tell them has
19:34
sent me? What is your name?"
19:36
And God says to Moses, I am who I am has
19:42
sent me to you. And so the second
19:47
objection that Moses has has been
19:50
satisfied.
19:52
Now go to verse four. And Moses is not
19:56
easy to take up the will of God and the
20:00
mission of God that has been set before
20:02
him.
20:04
Then Moses answered and said,
20:08
"But suppose
20:11
they will not believe me or listen to my
20:15
voice.
20:17
Be suppose they claim that I have not
20:20
had a vision from God whatsoever."
20:24
Because you see, there are over 1,500
20:27
other gods in Egypt.
20:30
How am I to convince them that you are
20:33
the God who has sent me and that you are
20:37
the God who is going to relieve them of
20:40
their affliction and relieve them of
20:42
their oppression?
20:47
God says to him,
20:51
"What is that in your hand?"
20:54
Moses says, "A rod."
20:57
And God says to him, "Cast it on the
21:01
ground."
21:03
He casts it on the ground and it becomes
21:05
a snake.
21:09
Then God says, "Further, now put forth
21:11
your hand and take the tail of the
21:15
snake." And when he got hold of the tail
21:18
of the snake, it turned into his rod.
21:20
Again, God gave him a miraculous sign to
21:25
show to the Hebrew people and unto
21:28
Pharaoh.
21:30
And he said, "Father, I'm going to give
21:31
you a second sign." Leprosy was a feared
21:35
and
21:37
terrible, terrible disease in the day of
21:40
Moses.
21:41
People that incurred leprosy in their
21:45
lives were considered to be outcast, to
21:48
be unclean, not to be able to be part of
21:50
the community. And God says to him, "Now
21:54
take your hand and put it in your
21:56
bosom." And Moses does. And when he
21:59
pulls his hand out, it looks like if it
22:02
is lepous.
22:03
And God says to him, "Put your hand back
22:06
in again." He does. And when he pulls it
22:09
out, it is restored like the other flesh
22:12
of his other hand. And God says to him,
22:16
I've given you two miracles that you can
22:18
perform before the people and show them
22:21
that I am with you. I am with you. I am
22:27
who I am.
22:31
Moses
22:32
with this
22:35
has another
22:38
point of objection.
22:42
It says in verse 10, then Moses said to
22:45
the Lord, "Oh my Lord,
22:49
I am not eloquent,
22:52
neither before nor since you have spoken
22:56
to your servant,
22:58
but I am slow of speech and slow of
23:03
tongue."
23:08
Moses is looking for some way so that he
23:11
doesn't have does not have to change the
23:15
very comfortable life that he has. Oh
23:18
yes, he wants to be a child of God. Oh
23:21
yes, he wants to be able to move about
23:26
in this new experience as a child of
23:29
God. But oh Lord, he doesn't want to
23:33
have to move out of his comfortable
23:35
circumstances.
23:38
He's looking for any way that God will
23:40
say to him, "Okay,
23:43
you can be a child of God. You can stay
23:46
right here at Cyani. I won't ask you to
23:49
do a thing."
23:51
God changes all that.
23:55
And God says to him in verse 11,
23:59
you see Moses has just complained that
24:02
he's slow of speech. He's not eloquent.
24:06
He has difficulty putting together the
24:09
right words.
24:11
And so the Lord has said to him, verse
24:15
11,
24:17
who has made man's mouth, or who makes
24:21
the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the
24:23
blind? Have not I, the Lord? Now
24:28
therefore, go verse 12. And I will be
24:32
with your mouth and teach you what you
24:35
shall say.
24:38
Verse
24:40
13,
24:42
Moses says for the fifth time, "Oh Lord,
24:48
please send by the head of whomever else
24:52
you may send to do this task." You see,
24:56
he still doesn't want to go. He's
24:59
looking for a way to get out of doing
25:01
God's will.
25:04
And God says to him in answer to his
25:07
fifth point of resistance, "Is not Aaron
25:11
the Levite your brother? I know that he
25:14
can speak swell be speak well. And look,
25:17
he is also coming to meet you."
25:22
And God says to them, "I will be with
25:27
your mouth and with his mouth and I will
25:32
teach you what you shall do."
25:37
Moses finally conceds and he is ready to
25:42
go to Egypt again and do God's will.
25:51
God sees our affliction.
25:54
God sees our suffering.
25:57
God sees our oppression. God sees all
26:01
our needs. Things haven't changed.
26:05
And we like Moses need to be willing to
26:09
say, "Almighty God,
26:13
as a child of yours,
26:16
teach me those things that I need to
26:19
say. Teach me those things I need to go
26:23
go do and give me the strength to serve
26:27
thy will according to your divine
26:31
purpose."
26:33
You see, the Bible tells us that if we
26:37
will just have faith in the word of God
26:40
in the book of Malachi 3 and verse 10,
26:44
the Bible tells us in that short
26:49
work that's there from the prophet
26:51
Malachi that the windows of heaven will
26:56
literally be opened and there will be
26:59
blessings poured out upon on us and show
27:03
so much abundance that there will be no
27:07
room, no room that man can build to
27:12
receive the blessing.
27:14
You see, that's what Moses had to come
27:17
to the realization of that God will
27:21
provide all his needs to do what the
27:24
will of God said should be done in his
27:27
life.
27:29
Jesus
27:31
in the book of Luke chapter 6 and verse
27:35
38
27:37
said that the blessings of God will come
27:40
to us pressed down
27:44
shaken together so that the most can get
27:47
in and then running over. That's how
27:51
great the blessings will be when God is
27:55
with us. When God is filling us with
27:59
every resource necessary to do his will
28:04
with our lives, we are to talk to those
28:08
that are brokenhearted.
28:11
We are supposed to proclaim liberty to
28:14
the captives,
28:16
liberty to the oppressed,
28:19
and to proclaim the acceptable year of
28:24
the Lord. I want to close with this to
28:28
you.
28:30
It's easy to say that we're not
28:32
adequate. It's easy to feel insecure and
28:36
say we don't have the means. It's easy
28:39
to go ahead and turn away and say,
28:42
"Well, that other fella is more
28:44
qualified than me." But I want to tell
28:47
you that in the power of salvation that
28:50
is God's alone,
28:53
God can make you to be exactly what he
28:57
wants you to be. All you have to do is
29:01
say, "Lord,
29:04
here am I. Here am I." Confess your
29:10
sins. Ask God for his forgiveness.
29:15
And God will reward you with the
29:19
salvation of his spirit, his blessing
29:24
upon you. In the name of Jesus, I pray
29:29
that you are in God's salvation.
29:34
Amen.
