Good morning folks. Thank you again for being here with us at Calvary Ministry.
0:19
We will be continuing the series of messages that we have prepared for
0:25
Easter in particular. As you recall the last several sermons and messages we've
0:33
had, we covered the triumphant uh entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. We covered the
0:40
next day where he cleansed the temple. Then we covered Tuesday and Wednesday
0:46
where he spent his time teaching in the temple with particular emphasis on what
0:54
the Pharisees should know so that they could respond to the good news.
1:00
Sometimes the hardest people in the world to teach anything to to get to
1:07
listen are those who think that they know it all already. The message of God
1:13
is a very simple message, one of salvation to all who will come. The
1:21
brokenhearted, the oppressed, those that are downtrodden, those that feel as though
1:28
life has passed them by. The message that Jesus brought was one of salvation
1:36
into the human soul such as mankind had not
1:43
experienced for a thousand years. And so here's Jesus and he tells them just as
1:51
John did to the Pharisees. He tells them during his teachings, he says, "Repent
1:59
for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." The message hasn't changed. The
2:07
world is still a lost and backsliding place, a place that is filled with anger
2:14
and violence and harm and every form of wickedness mankind against another.
2:23
And so a message of the kingdom of God that is within being activated and to
2:30
flow out so that lives are changed and people live again not for their own will
2:39
but for the will of almighty God within them. We're going to continue in our series
2:45
today and we're going to go to Thursday of that week and we're going to cover
2:51
the early part of Thursday of that week. And that would be the part where they
2:57
have the preparation for the last supper which will take it place in Jerusalem.
3:03
When I say they, it'll be the Jesus and the 12 disciples.
3:09
They will have the what we commonly call the last supper, the last Passover meal
3:15
that Jesus would celebrate on this earth. He does it with his
3:21
disciples and he is at Jerusalem. And so we will pick up
3:27
today's sermon by looking at chapter 13 of John and we will begin with verse
3:36
one. Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, this is going to be his
3:44
last to celebrate in Jerusalem. The last meal he will celebrate before his
3:52
betrayal and crucifixion. The last meal he will celebrate with the disciples. It says,
4:00
"Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour
4:06
had come that he should depart from this world to the
4:12
father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end."
4:19
Now, one thing I want to point out to you is that Jesus, it says that he is
4:25
going to depart that the he knows that the hour
4:30
has come according to God's divine purpose and he is going to depart from
4:37
this world and go to the father. He is
4:42
going to do that because he loved his own who were in the world. He loved them
4:50
to the end of his time here on this earth. Verse
4:57
two, they celebrated the Passover. They're in Jerusalem in what
5:04
was called an upper room. And Jesus knowing that the
5:09
father had given him a will to do on
5:15
this earth for the salvation of all those who
5:20
would be drawn to him. It says in verse two, "And supper
5:26
being ended, the devil already put it into the heart of Judas is chariot,
5:33
Simon's son, to betray him." Now Jesus knows that this is part of the divine
5:41
sequence of events that are going to transpire. All these things will take
5:47
place according to what God has ordained for his divine purpose of the Messiah on
5:55
this earth. And supper being ended, it says the devil had already put into the heart
6:04
of Judas to betray him. When did this occur? We talked about it in the last
6:11
sermon. how on Wednesday, the day before the last supper, Judas had gone to the
6:18
temple priests with the intent to betray
6:23
Jesus into their hands in exchange for his act of
6:31
betrayal. They were going to give him 30 pieces of silver.
6:37
Judas agreed to deliver to them the Messiah. He would identify the Messiah
6:45
to them in exchange for 30 pieces of silver.
6:52
Verse three, Jesus knowing that the father had given all things into his
6:59
hands and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper.
7:08
Now look what Jesus does. He knows that all those things to lead to his
7:15
betrayal, him being delivered to the Pharisees and those that hated him and
7:21
literally despised what he was doing, that he had been betrayed and but
7:29
that this was all going to be part of the transpiring of God's plan.
7:38
He knew that because he had come from God and he was going back to God. He
7:45
knew these things. It says in verse four, look what he does. He rose from the supper and
7:54
laid aside his garments. He took off his outer garment that he was wearing and
8:00
only had the inner garments on him. He took a towel and put it around
8:08
himself a long piece of cloth that he was going to use for washing
8:17
purposes. It says in verse five, "And after that, he poured water
8:24
into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and began to wipe with
8:32
the towel with which he was girded."
8:39
He does this as an act of humility to those whom he
8:49
loves. Pours water into a basin. Now he is the Lord. He is the master. He is the
8:57
Messiah that God has sent. Peter has already confessed him as the
9:06
son of the living God, the Christ, the son of the living God. And here's Jesus
9:13
after they have eaten the Passover meal, pours water into a basin, lays aside his
9:21
outer garment, and he takes a towel, wraps it
9:27
around himself, and he goes to wash the
9:32
disciples feet. It says in verse six, "And then he came
9:39
to Simon Peter." And Peter said to him, I can just imagine the quiet, the hush
9:47
that was in that upper room after they had eaten the meal. And as Jesus came
9:54
one to another, each one of them individually and washed their feet. Now
10:03
there's symbol symbolism there as well. Jesus came to them
10:09
individually one by one to wash their feet. He was going to take that part of
10:17
their human body which would pick up the dirt of the street, the the dirt from
10:24
their daily travels and moving about. And he was going to take that
10:30
dirt, that filth that was upon them, and he was going to wash it away. He was
10:39
going to wash it away. And as a sign of the washing being complete, he was going
10:45
to take a towel and then wipe their feet clean and dry. It's no different when we
10:54
come to God and we confess our sins. We repent of our sins.
11:00
The Bible says that Jesus in God, the
11:06
only begotten son, Jesus, when we confess our faith in him
11:13
and receive the salvation that only comes by
11:19
him according to God's salvation, that we are washed clean.
11:26
old things that person we want is put away and all things have become a new
11:34
according to God's plan of salvation. He came to Peter and Peter
11:43
said to him, him being Jesus, Lord, are you washing my feet?
11:50
Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand." Now,
11:58
see, he was performing that symbolic cleansing that we just talked about back
12:04
in verse six. What I am doing to you now, you do not
12:14
understand, but you will know after this. You
12:21
see, Jesus knew that Peter, like the
12:26
other disciples, was going to run and leave
12:31
him. He knew that a time would come when Peter would deny him three times during
12:38
the course of Thursday evening into Friday morning. He knew, but he also
12:46
wanted Peter to know that he had the assurance of being washed clean in the
12:54
salvation that comes from God alone.
13:00
Listen to what he says to Peter in verse eight. Peter said to him, "You shall
13:05
never wash my feet." First mistake. If you don't come to God and ask him for
13:12
completely complete forgiveness for your sins because of
13:19
Jesus, then you have no forgiveness. There can be no forgiveness without the
13:27
blood and the sacrifice that was shed by Jesus the Christ by God's divine plan AC
13:35
upon that cross on Mount Calvary.
13:41
Jesus says to him, "If I do not wash you, if I do not make you clean with the
13:49
salvation that has come by God's grace through me, listen to what it says. You
13:57
have no part with me. You must believe in the Lord Jesus
14:03
Christ as your savior. You must believe that he has come because of the very
14:09
grace of God according to God's plan of salvation. Jesus says further to
14:19
him after Peter says to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my
14:28
head." Why would he do that? because his head, his brain, his
14:36
mind. There are four things that we have to give to God in our
14:44
repentance. We give him our mind. We give him our
14:50
thoughts. We give him our daily
14:55
actions. and we give him our complete
15:01
faith. Four things that we give to God. The first two, our mind and our
15:10
thoughts come from that gift of God where we are made to know good and evil.
15:19
Created in the very image of God's ability to discern.
15:25
We give our mind, our thoughts to almighty God. So Peter says
15:35
he will give him his head. And then he says also his hands because we give the
15:43
very life we live unto God in thanksgiving and in praise of what God
15:51
has done to us. We give our mind, our thoughts. We give our hands, the very
15:57
lives we live and that is our head in our hands.
16:06
And Jesus says unto Peter, he who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but
16:17
is completely clean. and you are clean, but not all of you. That clothes there
16:26
refers directly to Judas
16:31
Escariat. For he knew, it says who would betray him. Therefore, he said, "You are
16:38
not all clean." There was one who did not understand the salvation that God
16:47
had sent in Jesus, the Christ, the Messiah, the one who has come to save us
16:55
from our sins. So when he had washed their
17:01
feet, he took his garments and sat down again. And he said to them, "Do you know
17:09
what I have done for you? You call me teacher and Lord, and
17:16
you say, "Well, for so I am." If I then, your Lord and
17:26
Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. the
17:35
humility that Jesus displayed in the washing of their
17:41
feet. Remember what it said in the Lord's prayer. Lord, forgive us our
17:47
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. You see,
17:54
forgiveness. Jesus, even though he knew that they were going to run from him, even though
18:00
he knew that Judas was going to betray him, had already betrayed him, and even
18:07
though he knew that Peter would deny him three times during the course of that
18:13
Thursday evening and into Friday morning, he washed their feet as an act
18:22
and an expression of the great love that he had
18:28
for them. And he says that this love that he expressed in this act of
18:35
humility, they need to keep this as a way to show their love one to another.
18:44
Verse 15, Jesus says plainly, "For I have given you an example that you
18:52
should do as I have done to you." Verse
18:59
16, most assuredly I say to you, a servant is not greater than his
19:06
master, nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.
19:14
If you do know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I do not speak.
19:23
Jesus continues in verse 18 concerning all of you. I know whom I
19:30
have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled. He who eats bread with me
19:38
has lifted up his heel against me. Now, keep in mind, he has washed the feet of
19:47
all 12 of the disciples, including
19:53
Judas, and they sit down to share bread
19:59
again. Verse 19, Jesus says, "Now I tell you before it comes that when it does
20:07
come to pass, you may believe that I am he." Who? He the son of the living God,
20:15
the Messiah, the hope for Christ, the one prophesied in all the writings of
20:22
the Old Testament scriptures. Verse 20. Most assuredly I say to you, he who
20:32
receives whomver I send receives me, and he who receives me receives him
20:43
who sent me. verse
20:50
21. They're eating these small morsels of bread and they're sharing
20:57
conversation and they're listening to Jesus. It says in verse 21, "And when Jesus had
21:06
said these things, he was troubled in spirit and testified and
21:14
said,"Most assuredly I say to you, one of you will betray
21:23
me." Now all of them except John will deny him. So 10 will deny him in the
21:31
next 12 hours and they will all flee from his
21:36
side. Only John will be with him through the trial and then the scorging and then
21:43
the crucifixion. John is the only disciple that will remain. And Jesus says, speaking of
21:52
Judas, most assuredly I say to you, one of you will betray
21:59
me. Verses 21- 25. The disciples begin to talk among
22:07
themselves, wondering who it would be. Jesus says to them in verse
22:14
26, "It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped
22:23
it." So he took the piece of bread. He dipped it and he gave it to Judas is
22:31
chariot the son of Simon. Now after the piece of
22:37
bread, Satan entered into Judas. Though he had the chance to
22:45
receive salvation directly from the Christ, the living God, the son of the
22:53
living God. He denied that
22:58
opportunity and he allowed Satan to enter into him.
23:04
Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do
23:13
quickly." Those at the table were confused by his quick conversation with
23:20
Judas. But in verse 31, Jesus says to them
23:26
plainly after they had gone out of the upper room, he gathers them together and
23:33
he says in verse 31, "Now the son of man is glorified and God is glorified in
23:42
him." Oh boy. If God is glorified in him, God will
23:48
also glorify him in himself and glorify
23:54
him immediately. There will be no failure in God's divine plan. Even though Judas has
24:02
rushed out and has made the final arrangements to betray him, knowing that
24:08
Jesus is going to go into the garden, he is going to come later with a cohort of
24:14
the guard of the temple and the Roman
24:20
legion and he is going to identify Jesus and they will arrest him. But this is
24:27
all to the glory of God because God is going to show us he is in
24:33
control. God has a divine plan and that divine plan will be
24:40
fulfilled according to God's purpose and according to God's glory.
24:49
Remember Lazarus who was in the grave four
24:55
days and he was raised not for the sake of Lazarus
25:01
though he was returned to his sisters Martha and Mary but he was raised to give glory
25:10
unto God. And as a final les lesson on the power of God to give back
25:19
life on this earth, little children, verse 33, I
25:27
shall be with you yet a little while. And he will be with them just a
25:33
matter of hours before he is arrested. And he says there to them, "You will
25:40
seek me. And as I said to the Jews, where I am going, you cannot come. So
25:49
now I say to you, a new commandment I give to you, that you love one another,
25:58
as I have loved you, that you also love
26:04
one another. By this all will know that you are the
26:10
my disciples if you love one another. None of those disciples could
26:18
go to the cross where Jesus was going to go in a matter of hours. None of those
26:24
disciples would hang on that cross for six hours after they had been brutalized
26:30
and they would die a very slow, infamous and painful death. None of those
26:37
disciples would go that night through that
26:44
suffering. None of those disciples could hang on that cross by
26:50
God's command and forgive the sins of the world.
26:58
Jesus says, "But the one thing you can do, and I say this to you, and a new
27:04
commandment that I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved
27:11
you, that you love one another." Verse
27:17
35. By this all will know that you are my disciples if you have love one for
27:27
another. I want you to turn with me to chapter 15.
27:35
Jesus gives a total of four verses here in
27:41
chapter 15 and they start in verse
27:47
9 and Jesus continuing on this thought that he gave them where we were just at
27:54
chapter 15 of John and verse 9 Jesus says to his disciples now Judas is not
28:00
with them at this time only the 11 he says as the father loved me I also
28:09
have loved you. He looked past all their faults. He looked past all those things
28:17
that the world would find wrong with them. These were just everyday men. They
28:22
were fishermen. They were workers. They were not schooled in the great
28:28
school of gamiel or Shemi or Haleiel. They had not received the very
28:36
grandest of things right from the Pharisees and
28:41
education. They were everyday ordinary people, fishermen, workers of the land.
28:50
Jesus says to them, "As the father loved me, I also have loved
28:57
you." You see, Jesus loves the ordinary people like me and you. And he says to
29:04
them, "If you keep my commandments, remember the commandment
29:09
to love one another, you will abide in my love just as I have kept my father's
29:16
commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you
29:24
that my joy may remain in you." The knowing of love, the knowing of
29:31
unshakable love is the greatest joy you can have in your life. That my joy may remain in you and
29:41
that your joy may be full. This is my
29:47
commandment that you love one another as I have loved you.
29:55
He adds one more verse there and this is where we'll close. And he says, "Greater
30:01
love hath no one than this, that he laid down his life for his
30:10
friends. You are my friends," Jesus says
30:15
to them. In closing, if you have not yet received
30:21
the salvation that can only come by the power of salvation from Almighty God, if
30:29
you have not experienced that miracle in your life that changes you from what you
30:36
were to what God would have you to be, I would encourage you to take this
30:44
moment to pray and simply say, Say God, I know I am a sinner. God, I repent of
30:53
my sins. And God, I call upon the name of a holy and glorious
31:01
Jesus to re to receive forgiveness of my
31:06
sins. God bless me with your salvation. I believe that if you prayed
31:13
that simple prayer that God is going to do amazing and wonderful things with the
31:20
spirit that he imparts in your life in the name of Jesus. Amen.
