Good morning, folks. This is Pastor Don Golden of Calvary Ministries. I want to
0:27
thank all of you, as I do every week, for tuning in to be with us and to share
0:34
the word of God in sermon and study. Last week, as you recalled, we did the
0:42
first of the series of three that we're going to do on Moses. And we talked
0:49
about Moses going to stand before Pharaoh and telling him, "Let my people
0:57
go, the Hebrews that were in slavery at that time, for 430
1:04
years. God sent him to Pharaoh to stand before Pharaoh and said, "Let my people
1:11
go so that they might worship me and
1:16
serve me. I be their God and they be my people."
1:23
We read also how nine different times
1:30
Moses went before Pharaoh and each of those nine times Pharaoh refused to let
1:38
them go and God would put a plague upon them of one type or another.
1:46
And then the 10th plague, Moses went back the 10th time, he and
1:52
Aaron before Pharaoh, and he said one more time, "Thus saith
1:58
the Lord God of Israel, let my people go." And the Pharaoh would not listen.
2:07
The Bible says he hardens his heart and he would not hear the cries of the
2:14
people of Israel to be let go to worship the Lord their God in a place that he
2:21
would show unto them. So God sends the 10th plague and that
2:29
plague is the taking of the lives killing all the firstborn of Egypt.
2:40
among them the firstborn son of Pharaoh
2:46
at the death of his firstborn son and at the clamor of the people in Egypt
2:52
because of the loss of their firstborn.
2:57
Moses goes to Pharaoh and Pharaoh says to him, "Take all your people and leave.
3:06
Go from me." That brings to us then verse 18
3:14
and chapter 13 of the book of Exodus.
3:19
And we find there where it says, "So God led the people around by way of the
3:26
wilderness of the Red Sea, and the children of Israel went up in
3:32
orderly ranks out of Egypt." Now the thing that I want to point out to you
3:40
about this opening verse from the scriptures, it says clearly
3:46
that God led the people. God led the
3:52
people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. So the people of Israel
4:01
who had been enslaved by Egypt for 430 years are now leaving to go worship the
4:10
Lord their God. God is going to lead them out of Egypt
4:18
into a place where they can become the nation of Israel and worship the Lord
4:24
their God. He will be their god and they will be his people. They are in the land
4:33
of Gan when they leave. The pharaoh Rammeses is living in the city that he
4:41
was building to bear his name at that time and a temple city further south
4:47
called Pitham. It was these two cities, the building program of Pharaoh that
4:54
caused the Hebrews to be enslaved, making bricks for the buildings he
5:01
wanted in the city with his name, Rammeses, and his place of temple worship, Pitham.
5:10
The Hebrews leave and they head south toward what is today called the Gulf of
5:19
Suez. So they head south and they travel a distance of about
5:28
40 miles from Pitham from Gan out of Gisham Gan
5:37
and they reached the very north part of the Gulf of Suez.
5:43
Now in the ancient Hebrew, that ancient part of what is the present day Gulf of
5:49
Suez was considered to be part of the Red Sea. And they called it in the
5:55
Hebrew Yam Suff. And when the Bible was translated about
6:03
300 CE from the Hebrew into the Latin,
6:09
which was later called the Vulgate, when the Bible was translated from the
6:17
Hebrew into the Latin in 300 CE, that
6:23
word Yamf, which literally means red sea,
6:29
was translated as that into the Latin Red Sea.
6:36
So Moses is leading these former slaves.
6:41
We don't know how many but if you calculate over 430 years from the fact
6:48
that they started with 66 persons 430 years they may have had as many as tens
6:58
of thousands I don't know for sure and so I won't try to give you a figure but
7:05
if it was just 20,000 people that was an
7:10
amazing amazing determination for Moses to lead these people who had formerly been slaves
7:19
and had never been out of Egypt, had never left the land of Goan for them to
7:25
head south and go toward Yamang Suff,
7:31
the Red Sea. And so they did. they depart and they would have traveled for
7:39
about 47 days. When I get to my next point, remember
7:46
Pharaoh, his eldest son, died in the last plague, the death of the first
7:54
born. Pharaoh's son is dead.
8:01
The time for inbalment for Egyptian royalty and those of high rank was 40
8:09
days. So Pharaoh would have sat in Rammeses
8:15
for 40 days waiting for the imbalmed remains of his son to come back.
8:24
There was a period of mourning then after the remains came back. That was
8:29
seven days. And so Pharaoh would have sat in Rammeses, the city he was
8:36
building to have his name for 47 days.
8:42
Now if we interpret that into a 7 day week that means that six and a half
8:49
weeks the Hebrews had already been in journey from Gan south toward Yamsuk
8:59
the Red Sea. 47 days. Pharaoh after he goes through his period
9:07
of grieving for his son, he decides on the advisement of his counselors that
9:15
they should go and bring the slaves back, that they should not let this
9:21
happen to his reign in Egypt.
9:26
And so they launch out and attack with all their chariots, with their horses,
9:34
and with their foot soldiers, and they go after the Israelites,
9:41
the former Hebrew slaves of Pharaoh.
9:47
Now, that's where we pick it up in chapter 14 and verse one. It says there
9:54
in chapter 14 of Exodus and verse one, now the Lord spoke to Moses saying,
10:02
"Speak to the children of Israel that they turn and camp before Pi
10:11
Roth between Mdo and the sea opposite
10:16
Baal Sapon. and you shall tent before it by the sea. Now, we don't have
10:24
archaeological confirmation of where those were, but it
10:30
says obviously that they were already near to the sea. So they had already in
10:38
that 47 days traveled that 40 miles from
10:44
Gan and they were camped before the Red Sea. So Rammeses and Pitham would have
10:52
been to their north. The Red Sea Sulf
10:57
would have been directly to their east. Directly to their east. And there they
11:05
are encamped according to what we have here.
11:11
And it says in verse eight, "And the Pharaoh and the Pharaoh of
11:17
Egypt, the Pharaoh of Egypt, his heart was heart was hardened, and he pursued the
11:25
children of Israel. And the chis children of Israel went out with
11:31
boldness. So the Egyptians pursued them all the
11:37
horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, and his army. And they
11:45
overtook them camping in this spot beside Piha
11:52
Roth and before Bal Safon.
11:57
And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold,
12:03
the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid. And the children
12:10
of Israel cried out to the Lord. They cried out to the Lord.
12:18
Turn with me now if you would to the book of Romans, chapter 8, and I want you to go with me
12:25
to verse 28. I wonder what type of sermon of
12:33
encouragement Moses gave to the people when his scouts who were behind them to
12:41
protect them and give warning of any approaching enemy
12:47
when they came to him. I wonder what he said to the people of Israel.
12:56
I think possibly something like Paul wrote many years
13:01
later in the book of Romans chapter 8
13:07
and verse 28. Paul said there,
13:12
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God,
13:21
to those who are the called according to his purpose."
13:28
Now, I want to remind you of the situation. God called the Hebrews to come out of
13:35
Egypt so that they could come and they could worship him. They could be his
13:41
people and he could be their God. They were called according to the purpose of
13:46
God. And it says here that all things work together for good to those who love
13:54
God. Now think of this. The people of Israel,
14:00
they had the word that the Egyptians were coming from the north in pursuit of
14:05
them. The Pharaoh had brought his chariots, his horses, his calvary, and
14:12
he had brought his foot soldiers, and this is in the early part of the Iron
14:17
Age. So, they had weapons of warfare that the Israelites had none of. The
14:28
Israelites were completely at the mercy, it would seem, to the warfare
14:35
uh tactics and the implements of war that the Egyptians had. The Egyptians
14:42
were coming fast behind them from the north.
14:48
They had a sea in front of them. Now at that point of the Red Sea all the
14:55
way at the north of the present day Gulf of Suez,
15:03
it is about 121 miles across that sea. So they could
15:11
see the water in front of them, but they couldn't see the other side.
15:17
That sea at that point, what we would call here the Red Sea,
15:23
present day Gulf of Suez, was about
15:29
on the average 140 ft deep.
15:34
Now, these are people that were not skilled, you know, with maritime
15:41
operations. They had no boats. They had no means to
15:46
get across there. There were no large rafts. There were no barges.
15:52
And so here the water is in front of them. They can't see the other side. A
15:59
seemingly impassible obstacle. And the Egyptians are coming
16:04
behind them from the north. And the message that I believe was
16:12
preached to them, I believe that they were told, "We know
16:19
that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are
16:26
the called according to his purpose."
16:33
It says going on down in verse 31, what shall we say to these things?
16:41
Imagine Moses standing on that shore. The Egyptians are coming. The ocean is
16:48
in front of them. A seemingly impassable obstacle. He says, "What then shall we say to
16:56
these things? If God is for us,
17:02
who can be against us?
17:07
Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress?
17:14
Those people were in absolute distress. Have you ever been in distress in your
17:20
life? Have you ever been faced seemingly impossible obstacles in front of you? Or
17:28
persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or
17:34
sword.
17:40
Verse 37 of Romans 8. Yet in all these things, listen to the
17:48
word of God. Yet in all these things we are more than
17:53
conquerors through him who loved us.
17:59
For I am persuaded, verse 38, for I am persuaded that neither death
18:05
nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers,
18:12
nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other
18:20
created thing shall be able to separate us from the love of God
18:30
who is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Let's
18:35
go back.
18:40
The people are there and Moses says to the people
18:48
in verse 13, "Do not be afraid.
18:54
Stand still and see the salvation of the
18:59
Lord which he will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see
19:07
today, you shall see again no more
19:12
forever. The Lord will fight for you and you
19:18
shall hold your peace. Then God says to Moses, "Now remember,
19:25
they're standing on the west side of Yamsuk, the Red Sea, and they need to go to the
19:33
east side to get into Sinai, a distance of about
19:40
121 miles."
19:45
And God says to Moses, "Lift up your rod
19:51
and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the children of
19:59
Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst over of the sea."
20:07
Moses does exactly that. And the waters begin to part and they go
20:17
up in a heap on both sides to the north and to the south.
20:25
Turn with me to the book of Corinthians.
20:32
1 Corinthians chapter 15
20:40
and verse 55. Turn with me if you would. 1 Corinthians
20:49
chapter 15 versif uh chapter 15
20:59
and verse 55. [Laughter]
21:08
And the Bible says there, now keep in mind how much these people
21:15
were afraid, these Hebrew slaves. They were in fear of their very lives.
21:25
God said that he would stand for them on this day.
21:32
And first Corinthians chapter 15 and verse 55,
21:38
the Bible says, and it's a comfort for us to this day. Oh death,
21:46
where is your sting? Oh hades, where is your victory?
21:54
The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. Now listen
22:01
to how it closes. But thanks be to God, who gives us the
22:08
victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Isn't that what Moses said to them?
22:16
Moses said to the people of Israel, "The Lord will fight you for you this day,
22:23
and you shall hold your peace. Stand still and see the salvation of the
22:30
Lord, which he will accomplish for you today. And the Egyptians whom you see
22:37
today coming from the north, you shall see again
22:42
no more forever. Now what happens?
22:49
Excuse me. Moses and the people begin to cross the
22:54
sea. Moses puts out his rod and the water
23:00
walls back on each side. Now, keep in mind that this ocean, if this inland
23:07
ocean, this Red Sea in this day and time was as it is today
23:13
with an average depth of 140 ft. And let's say that there were tens of
23:20
thousands to cross, maybe 20,000 people, maybe more.
23:27
Let's say that the path that was made for them to cross was a half mile wide.
23:33
That would mean that water was standing
23:39
3,000 ft or more on each side of them, 34 of a mile high as they passed
23:47
through. Then Moses stretched out his hand over
23:54
the sea, and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind,
24:02
and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided.
24:08
So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and
24:14
the waters were a wall to them, 3,000 ft high,
24:24
wall to them on their right and on their left. They were literally
24:29
looking straight up with water on each side. Now keep in mind from the point
24:35
where they started going into this miracle, this phenomenon that no man had
24:42
ever seen before. They could not see the other side, the
24:49
other shore. But they had faith and they followed Moses and they went into the
24:57
Red Sea as God commanded.
25:02
So they go into the sea and as they are passing out on the other
25:09
side, it says in the morning watch, they looked down and there was the army
25:15
of the Egyptians coming into the sea.
25:20
And it says the Egyptians when they looked they were scared and they said to
25:27
Pharaoh, "Let us flee, lest we be consumed in these waters."
25:36
The Israelites were safe on the east shore of Yamsuk.
25:44
And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. And when the morning appeared,
25:50
the sea returned to its full depth while the Egyptians were still fleeing into
25:58
it. And so the whole army of Israel exactly
26:03
as Moses told them was destroyed or the whole army of Egypt exactly as Moses had
26:11
prophesied was destroyed before their very eyes.
26:17
Verse 30. And so the Lord saved Israel that
26:22
day out of the hand of the Egyptians. And Israel saw the Egyptians
26:30
dead on the seashore.
26:36
The Israelites safe on the east shore of the Red Sea.
26:43
They stand on the shore and they sing the song of the sea. Here's what it
26:50
says. Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord and spoke,
26:58
saying, I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously.
27:06
The horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength
27:12
and my song. He has become my salvation.
27:19
He is my God and I will praise him.
27:24
Who is like unto you, oh Lord, among the gods. And remember, Egypt had over 1,500
27:33
pagan deities. Who is like you, glorious in holiness?
27:39
Verse 18, the end of the psalm. The Lord shall reign forever and ever.
27:48
Now I want to close with this thought. I know that people in today's society and
27:55
in today's world face unique problems as well. There are times when you are
28:01
afraid for what lies ahead. You're afraid for what lies behind. You seem to
28:08
be in distress because of the very circumstances
28:13
of your life. When times get desperate,
28:20
when that type of distress falls upon you,
28:26
remember that the Lord reigns forever and
28:32
forever. And there's no one like unto the Lord
28:39
who is like unto him glorious and holiness.
28:46
Do this. You can make him your savior, your God,
28:54
your redeemer. Simply say, "Almighty God, forgive me of
29:00
my sins. I repent of my sins.
29:07
I want to be a child of yours. I want you to have become my salvation.
29:16
I want you to be my God. And I will praise you with the life I
29:24
live. I believe if you have repented of your sins and called upon the name of
29:30
the Lord that God will save you from all that plagues you and has the potential
29:39
to cause you harm because the Lord,
29:45
he is glorious. He is holy and he shall reign forever and ever. I
29:55
pray that you have received that. Amen.
