0:23
good morning folks this is pastor don
0:26
golden as i tell you every week from
0:28
calvary ministry and as always we are so
0:32
glad that you have tuned into us to
0:35
share the message of jesus christ our
0:39
lord and savior the son of the living
0:42
god we have been doing a series for the
0:47
last six sermons and broadcasts on
0:51
easter week the easter week and we have
0:56
finished all the way through the
0:58
crucifixion
0:59
with our prior messages if you have not
1:02
seen those if this is the first one
1:05
you're watching you can go back and
1:08
review those and bring yourself up to
1:12
date with them today is the last in the
1:16
series of these messages on the easter
1:20
week and we are going to deal with the
1:23
most important event in all of christian
1:29
history the most important provision of
1:33
god's grace in all of created history
1:38
and that being the resurrection of jesus
1:42
the christ now you say "well preacher
1:44
now why would you say that it is the
1:47
most important?" well let me turn if you
1:50
would for just a moment to the book of
1:53
first corinthians
1:56
and paul the apostle regarding the
1:59
importance of this event had this to say
2:04
but now is christ risen from the dead
2:08
now keep in mind that paul is writing
2:11
this about 20 years after
2:17
christ has been crucified these words in
2:20
corinthians
2:22
and about 17 years after his experience
2:27
with jesus the christ face to face on
2:30
the road to damascus
2:33
he writes these words to the church at
2:36
corenth he says "but now is christ risen
2:41
from the dead and become the first
2:44
fruits of them that slept
2:48
for since by man came death by man came
2:52
also the resurrection."
2:56
we're going to talk about that in just a
2:58
second of the dead for as in adam all
3:03
die even so in christ shall all be made
3:09
alive
3:11
but every man in his own order christ
3:14
the first fruits afterward they that are
3:18
christs at his coming paul wrote about
3:23
the clarity and the absolute reality of
3:27
the resurrection
3:30
now paul was writing as we said 17 years
3:35
20 years after the death of jesus the
3:40
christ on the cross after the
3:43
crucifixion
3:45
we're going to talk now about those that
3:48
were there on that resurrection morning
3:53
the number of people that jesus appeared
3:56
to on that resurrection morning
4:01
and we will start by going to the book
4:04
of luke and chapter 24
4:08
and we will begin there in verse one
4:13
it says therein
4:16
now upon the first day of the week
4:21
very early in the morning they came unto
4:24
the supplr we'll define those they in
4:28
just a moment bringing the spices which
4:32
they had prepared and certain others
4:36
with them now who were these we're going
4:39
to read later on down in verse 10 that
4:42
there was mary of magdala
4:45
mary the mother of jesus the house
4:49
manager
4:51
of herod antipus nonetheless joanna wife
4:55
of shoua as she is called and salom the
5:00
mother of james and john the sons of
5:06
zebedee
5:08
it says that when this group of women
5:11
carrying the spices and those things to
5:15
finish the preparation of the body for
5:18
complete burial
5:20
now keep in mind this is sunday morning
5:25
the first day of the week by the roman
5:28
calendar so friday at 300 p.m jesus died
5:32
on the cross he was taken from the cross
5:36
by joseph of arma and these here to help
5:41
and he was taken to be placed into a
5:44
tomb that joseph of ara had prepared for
5:49
himself
5:51
so they put jesus into the tomb and they
5:54
could not do anymore because the sabbath
5:57
came at 6:00 friday evening and the
6:02
sabbath began and lasted for that period
6:06
until we're talking right now
6:10
so jesus was put into the tomb the stone
6:15
was rolled across the tomb the guards
6:18
were posted at the tomb
6:21
all the preparations by the romans and
6:24
the pharisees was made to keep it from
6:28
appearing that the apostles would come
6:32
and take the body and thereby proclaim a
6:36
resurrection
6:38
because jesus talked very plainly about
6:41
being the resurrection and the life and
6:45
he had told his disciples that if he
6:49
were crucified
6:51
that he would be able to rise again now
6:56
let's go to verse two right here of
6:58
chapter 24 of luke and it says there
7:04
that the women that came they found the
7:07
stone rolled away from the suppler
7:11
that was a very great stone a very heavy
7:13
heavy stone
7:16
and they entered in and found not the
7:19
body of the lord jesus
7:24
and it came to pass as they were much
7:27
perplexed thereabout they weren't sure
7:30
what has happened behold two men stood
7:33
by them in shining garments
7:36
angelic messengers
7:39
and as they were afraid the women
7:44
and bowed down their faces to the earth
7:46
they said unto them the angel said unto
7:50
the women why seek ye the living among
7:56
the dead he is not here verse six but is
8:02
risen remember how he spake unto you
8:06
when he was yet in galilee
8:10
and all of the gospels matthew mark and
8:15
luke refer to this communication
8:19
all of them
8:21
re contain the words about the
8:23
resurrection that was going to occur
8:26
according to god's will and the complete
8:30
message over victory over sin and
8:33
victory over death
8:36
and it says that when the angel said
8:38
this that they remembered his words
8:43
and they ran from the suppler they
8:46
returned from the supplr and they told
8:49
all these things unto the 11 who were in
8:54
jerusalem
8:55
and to all the rest they spread the
8:58
world all around that jesus the christ
9:01
had resurrected from the dead just as he
9:04
had said that he was the resurrection
9:07
and the life and though he had been
9:10
crucified and everyone had seen his body
9:14
die on that cross
9:16
yet he was not in the tomb the angels
9:20
had told him that he was risen and that
9:25
he was not to be found among them dead
9:30
and so they returned in verse 9 from the
9:33
suppler and told all these things unto
9:37
the disciples who were in jerusalem and
9:40
to all the others that were there that
9:43
they could talk to and it says in verse
9:46
10 it identifies these ones these others
9:50
that are up in verse one mary of magdala
9:54
and joanna
9:56
the wife of shoua who was the house
9:58
manager of none other than herod antipus
10:02
the governor of galilee
10:05
and the other women the mother of james
10:08
salom and other women were with them
10:12
which told these things unto the
10:15
apostcle apostles and their words seemed
10:18
to them when they first heard this as
10:22
idle tales and they believed them not
10:27
then arose peter now this is the second
10:30
one to go to the supplr it says then
10:34
arose peter and he ran unto the suppler
10:38
and stooping down he beheld the linen
10:42
cloths now there were two cloths laid
10:45
there by themselves one was a face cloth
10:50
that had been put onto the body and then
10:54
the body cloth itself which wrapped all
10:58
around it
11:00
there have been some
11:04
archaeological artifacts found
11:08
that many have claimed are this burial
11:12
shroud
11:14
it is called the shroud of tin
11:17
the one that has been found and it is
11:20
maintained by the catholic church our
11:23
catholic brothers in turin italy in that
11:27
small chapel it has been studied again
11:31
and again and again thousands of
11:34
articles have been written about this
11:38
shroud of touring this death burial
11:41
shroud that they have found that is
11:44
unique in all of archaeology
11:49
because it contains on it an image of a
11:54
man who was scorged crucified
12:00
who was beaten about the head and bled
12:03
all this evidence into the burial shroud
12:08
itself
12:09
you say "well now it mentioned two
12:11
things here it mentions the face cloth
12:16
that was there." well they have got a
12:19
face cloth called the sudarium
12:23
and currently it is in spain but like
12:27
the shroud of toin this burial cloth it
12:31
is believed to possibly be the very
12:36
cloth for the face that was mentioned
12:39
here in the scriptures that has
12:42
miraculously survived to this day and
12:46
time
12:49
many articles have been written many
12:52
things have been said you can go on the
12:56
internet and you can research the shroud
13:00
of turin and you can research also the
13:04
cedarium of spain and you can arrive at
13:07
your own conclusions
13:10
but i mention these to you
13:14
no so jesus now has appeared to the
13:17
women and he has appeared to peter and
13:21
in the book of john it says that john
13:24
the apostle was also with him but did
13:28
not go into the tomb as peter did but
13:32
now these have run back and they're
13:35
telling everybody that the tomb is empty
13:39
that the supplr is empty that that place
13:43
of the dead has no no one in it that
13:47
jesus by the angelic voice has been
13:51
risen from the dead is not to be found
13:55
among the dead because he is alive and
14:00
living just as he said he would be now
14:05
turn with me again now and we're going
14:08
to look at the next message
14:12
people that meet jesus
14:14
jesus when he left jerusalem
14:19
there were two men traveling on the road
14:22
to emmas now emmas was a distance of
14:26
about oh eight or nine miles away from
14:31
jerusalem at this time and two of the
14:34
disciples we don't have their names
14:37
given here but two of the disciples and
14:40
apparently they were in with within the
14:43
close circle of disciples that jesus had
14:48
and it says in verse 13 "and behold two
14:51
of them went that same day to a village
14:55
called emmas when the 11 disciples went
14:59
into jerusalem into a common area these
15:03
two were headed back to a village called
15:07
emmas which was from jerusalem about
15:11
three score furongs
15:14
and they talked together as they were
15:17
walking to this little village of emmas
15:20
they talked together of all these things
15:23
which had happened in the past week
15:27
everything from the triumphant entry
15:30
hosana sunday through the entry into
15:34
jerusalem the cleansing of the temple
15:37
the teaching in the temple the plotting
15:40
by the the pharisees the betrayal by
15:44
judas the last supper the mock trial the
15:49
condemnation the crucifixion
15:53
the death and burial and now here it is
15:57
sunday morning one week later and they
16:01
are walking to emmas
16:04
and it says in verse 15 "and it came to
16:07
pass that while they communed together
16:10
and reasoned jesus himself drew near and
16:14
went with them." now here's the amazing
16:17
thing verse 16
16:21
but their eyes were holding so that they
16:25
should not know him they were so focused
16:29
on everything that had happened and
16:32
their disappointment that this man jesus
16:35
of nazareth was not the messiah that
16:38
they had been looking for they were
16:41
looking at everything negative they were
16:43
looking through blind eyes
16:49
and jesus joins them he walks up
16:55
and he says unto them "what manner of
16:58
communications are these that you have
17:01
one to another as you walk and are so
17:04
sad so downcast?"
17:07
and one of the two says to jesus not
17:11
recognizing him and one of them whose
17:15
name was cleopus
17:17
answering said unto him "art thou only a
17:20
stranger in jerusalem
17:23
and hast not known the things which are
17:26
come to pass there in these days?"
17:31
and he said unto them "what things?" see
17:36
jesus wanted them to be able to see him
17:41
and he says "what things?" and they said
17:44
unto him concerning jesus of nazareth
17:47
who was a prophet mighty in deed and
17:50
word before god and all the people
17:55
and how the chief priests and our rulers
17:57
delivered him to be condemned to death
18:01
and have crucified him
18:06
yay
18:07
they continued on go down to verse 22
18:11
and certain women also of our company
18:14
they identify those remember that ran
18:17
back from the tomb to the disciples and
18:20
the others made us astonished which were
18:24
early at the septic
18:26
and when they found not his body they
18:29
came saying that he had also seen a
18:33
vision of angels which said that he was
18:37
alive
18:40
they still don't recognize jesus
18:45
and they say in verse 25
18:48
that jesus then said unto him
18:52
"oh fools
18:54
and slow of heart
18:56
to believe all that the prophets have
19:00
spoken
19:02
ought not christ to have suffered these
19:05
things
19:06
to enter into
19:09
his glory
19:14
and then he talks to them about how
19:17
these things were prophesied by moses
19:21
and all the prophets and in all the
19:23
scriptures
19:25
and it says that as he talked to them
19:29
they approached the village of emmas
19:33
and it came to pass that they asked him
19:36
to sit down and to have a meal with them
19:40
and in verse 30 it says "as he sat at me
19:44
with them he took bread and blessed it
19:48
and broke it and gave it to them."
19:54
going back to what we call the last
19:57
supper the giving of the bread and the
20:00
blood for us his body being the bread
20:05
his blood being given and being trans
20:10
translated in the wine of that dinner
20:14
and it says that as they ate with him
20:18
and as he break the bread and gave the
20:22
wine
20:24
that verse 31 and their eyes were opened
20:28
and they knew him and as soon as they
20:32
knew who he was he vanished out of their
20:38
sight
20:40
they immediately leave emmas and rush
20:43
back to jerusalem and just as the women
20:47
have said just as peter has said just as
20:50
john has said this is all happening in
20:53
the same day this sunday so these two
20:56
cleopass and one other they say "the
21:00
lord is risen indeed and hath appeared
21:05
to simon peter." peter you remember ran
21:10
to the tomb after the women and he saw
21:13
jesus
21:16
and they told what things were done in
21:18
the way on the way to emmas
21:21
and how he was known to them when he
21:25
broke the bread blessed it gave the wine
21:30
and blessed it
21:33
now jesus appears again
21:37
this time now this being the
21:41
fifth time that jesus is appearing
21:45
and he appears to the disciples
21:50
this is in jerusalem where they are at
21:54
the 11 now on this particular occasion
21:58
for some reason thomas is not present
22:02
and so jesus appears to these and he
22:07
appears to the disciples in the room
22:09
that they are in in jerusalem he comes
22:12
into them he stands in the midst of them
22:15
verse 36
22:18
and he says to them "peace be unto
22:24
you."
22:27
and they were terrified and afraid and
22:30
suppose that they had seen a spirit and
22:35
jesus says unto them and he said unto
22:38
them why are ye troubled and why do
22:42
thoughts arise in your heart
22:47
and he stands before them and he says
22:50
"behold my hands and my feet that it is
22:56
i myself
22:59
me and see." he says "handle me and see
23:05
for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as
23:10
you see me have." his body his spirit
23:15
have all been brought back together
23:17
resurrected by the very power of god as
23:21
the symbol of victory over sin and death
23:26
and then he says further to them
23:29
he says to them in verse 41 he says
23:33
"have you any meat do you have anything
23:37
to eat?" and they gave him in verse 42 a
23:41
piece of boiled fish and a honeycomb
23:46
piece
23:47
and he took it and did eat before them
23:53
and he said unto them "these are the
23:56
words which i spoke unto you while i was
23:59
yet with you that all things must be
24:02
fulfilled which are written in the law
24:05
of moses and in the prophets and in the
24:09
psalms concerning me." he's telling them
24:13
very clearly that he is the fulfillment
24:16
of all the prophecies of all the ages he
24:20
is the messiah he is the christ he is
24:24
jesus the christ the son of the living
24:28
god
24:31
and that repentance and remissions of
24:33
sin
24:35
should be preached in his name among all
24:38
nations beginning at jerusalem he was
24:43
telling them that they were not to sit
24:45
idle but they were to take what they
24:47
have seen with him and they are to go
24:51
into all the world and preach the good
24:54
news to all that have an ear to make
24:59
everyone
25:00
hear the word of god
25:04
and he says then in verse 49 "and behold
25:09
i send the promise of my father upon you
25:13
but carry you in jerusalem until you be
25:17
imbued from power on on high."
25:22
and later we will look at that in the
25:25
book of acts 1:es 4 chapter 2 and verse
25:31
38
25:35
and so
25:38
he leaves there and he goes and he
25:41
appears to them again and another time
25:44
when thomas is there and you remember
25:47
the famous recounting of how thomas said
25:50
that unless he could put his hands his
25:54
fingers into the nail prints and put his
25:57
hand into the side where he had been cut
26:00
by the roman spear the lance he said he
26:04
would not believe in jesus appears to
26:06
them again when thomas with with them
26:11
he appears then one more time by the sea
26:15
of galilee
26:17
to the seven of them that are fishing
26:21
and then he appears to the apostles
26:24
again in group among the 500
26:29
and the ninth time he appears to james
26:32
his halfb brotherther and then the last
26:36
time is when he appears and he speaks to
26:40
them and he gives them the great
26:42
commission and he says to them
26:46
he says if you look at the book of
26:48
matthew chap 28 and verse 18 he says
26:53
"all power is given me
26:57
on in heaven and in earth." and he says
27:01
"go ye therefore and teach all nations
27:04
baptizing them in the name of the father
27:07
and of the son and of the holy ghost
27:10
teaching them to observe all things
27:13
whatsoever i have commanded you and lo i
27:18
am with you always even to the end of
27:24
the world."
27:26
and it says that from that point forward
27:30
of the disciples
27:32
his disciples it says in verse 52 "and
27:35
they worshiped him and returned to
27:38
jerusalem with great joy and were
27:42
continually in the temple praising and
27:46
blessing god." amen this same jesus is
27:50
alive today and lives so that we might
27:54
have life and have it more abundantly
27:57
and not only that but have it eternally
28:01
if you have not yet received jesus
28:04
christ as your lord and savior say these
28:07
few words jesus
28:11
jesus the son of the living god have
28:15
mercy on me and this instant
28:20
i repent of my sins and call upon you
28:24
for your salvation
28:27
free me from my sins lift all these
28:31
burdens from me make me a child of yours
28:36
in the name of jesus i pray that you
28:40
have done just that god bless you all
28:44
amen
