0:16
Good morning, folks. This is Pastor Don
0:19
Golden from Calvary Ministry. As always,
0:23
I just want to take the time to thank
0:25
you for being with us today. And
0:30
normally I I rely on our prayer at the
0:33
end, but I'm going to ask you to give
0:37
special prayer today. All of you that
0:40
are listening in, our producer, Alton
0:43
Watkins, is going in for kurateed
0:47
surgery on the 14th. And I would ask for
0:50
all of you to keep him in your prayers.
0:54
He is a key to making these broadcasts
0:58
possible. And he's such a good Christian
1:01
man. I know that if we lift him up in
1:04
prayer that God will have a special
1:07
healing for him. His name is Alton
1:11
Watkins. Pray for him and pray for him
1:14
the morning he goes in for his surgery
1:18
on the 14th. God bless you. God will
1:21
bless you for it.
1:24
Our message today is going to be one to
1:28
encourage everyone to more active
1:31
service in the kingdom of God. If you
1:35
are a co child of God, and I know that
1:38
most of you who are listening are, then
1:41
God has something for you to do on this
1:44
earth. God saved you for a reason. God's
1:49
salvation is upon you for a reason.
1:52
God's mercy is upon you for a reason.
1:56
God's grace
1:58
and bring forth the glory of God with
2:02
the very lives and the way the things
2:06
that you do are done in your life.
2:10
Praise God with the life you have. I
2:14
want you to turn with me to the book of
2:16
Colossians
2:19
and we're going to be in chapter 3 and
2:22
verse 23.
2:24
Now, Paul the Apostle wrote this
2:26
epistle,
2:28
wrote this epistle to the church at
2:30
Colossians. But I want to go ahead and
2:34
take out just a small piece of his
2:37
writings this morning for us to look at
2:41
and what it means to our lives of
2:44
service to Almighty God. If you go to
2:48
the book of Colossians chapter 3 and
2:51
verse 23,
2:53
Paul says there, "And whatever you do,
2:59
do it hardily as to the Lord and not to
3:06
men."
3:07
I've got another verse that I want us to
3:09
look at today and we'll pull these two
3:13
together
3:15
and that's in the book of James. Now
3:17
James was the halfb brotherther of Jesus
3:20
and at the time that he wrote this he
3:23
was also the first bishop of the church
3:26
at Jerusalem.
3:29
He was a great influence on the early
3:32
first century church. James, the brother
3:35
of Jesus. I wonder how many times as he
3:40
was pastoring the church there at
3:44
Jerusalem,
3:45
as he was giving words of encouragement
3:49
to the others that were serving the
3:52
kingdom of God, as he was looking
3:55
forward to the promises of Almighty God
4:00
as they had been fulfilled in his
4:03
brother Jesus, the son of the living
4:07
God. I wonder how many times he thought
4:10
about those things that he had received
4:14
from his elder brother Jesus. Can you
4:18
imagine them? Now, Jesus was probably
4:22
about two and a half to three years
4:24
older than he was. James in all
4:27
likelihood was born while Mary and
4:29
Joseph and Jesus were in Egypt
4:34
when they had left to avoid the decree
4:37
by Herod to kill all the children male
4:42
children two years and under.
4:45
James was in all likelihood born there
4:49
in Egypt but being the younger brother
4:52
by two to three years. Can you imagine
4:56
growing up having a big brother like
5:00
Jesus? Put that in your mind for just a
5:04
moment.
5:06
Put that in your mind for just a moment.
5:08
those of you who have had siblings older
5:12
than yourself
5:15
and the things that he must have
5:18
learned, the things that he must have
5:21
watched his elder brother Jesus do.
5:27
James in the book of James the epistle
5:31
writes these words in the first chapter
5:34
and the 22nd verse. He says, "But be
5:39
doers of the word and not hearers only."
5:46
Be doers of the word and not hearers
5:50
only. Remember what we just read from
5:54
the writings of Paul in the Epistle of
5:57
Colossians where he says, "And whatever
6:00
you do, do it hardily as to the Lord and
6:06
not to men."
6:09
I looked at these two verses and I
6:12
thought about what it could mean for us
6:16
today. What we could learn from these
6:20
two verses. Last broadcast we talked
6:24
about the need to pray for America.
6:28
Christian people need to do do for the
6:33
kingdom of God. And in doing for the
6:36
kingdom of God, in obeying the will of
6:40
Jesus the Christ for your life, you are
6:43
going to do things that not only move
6:47
the message of Christ forward, but make
6:50
this great nation that we live in will
6:55
make it stronger. Yes, many things are
6:59
important and give unto things that are
7:02
Caesars that belong unto Caesars, but
7:06
give unto God those things that belong
7:09
to God. God wants you. God wants you.
7:16
God wants you to faithfully serve God,
7:20
to walk humbly with your Lord. God wants
7:23
you to love your families. God wants you
7:28
to love your neighbor. God wants you to
7:31
be doers of the word and not hearers
7:35
only. And whatsoever you do, do it
7:39
heartily as unto the Lord. The message
7:44
is clear. I can remember many years ago,
7:48
the year was 1960,
7:50
a young man was being elected president,
7:54
a young man,
7:56
and everybody had their
8:00
divisive, conflictive statements about,
8:04
you know, him coming into office from
8:07
his religion to, you know, his
8:09
experience to his wealth, etc. There
8:13
were many reasons why people were ready
8:16
to complain about this young man who had
8:20
just been elected president.
8:23
His name was John Kennedy.
8:26
John Kennedy. And in his inaugural
8:29
address, he said to all of America as he
8:33
concluded his remarks, "Ask not what
8:37
your country can do for you, but for you
8:41
can do for your country." The challenge
8:44
hasn't changed except that as a
8:47
Christian people. It is the very spirit
8:51
within us that moves us moves us to
8:55
serve the will of almighty God. And in
8:59
serving the will of almighty God, we
9:02
prosper
9:04
this nation. We prosper our families. We
9:09
prosper the future. those generations to
9:14
come.
9:17
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, he said, "Ask
9:21
not what your country can do for you,
9:24
but what you can do for your country."
9:28
Last week's message, I said, "Pray for
9:30
your country.
9:32
Pray for America. Pray for your
9:35
neighbor. Pray for your families." The
9:39
greatest acts of love that you do,
9:44
the greatest acts of love that you do
9:48
are going to be those love acts that you
9:53
do for your home and for your family.
9:58
Sometimes the greatest acts are the
10:01
small acts.
10:04
There was a woman who we're going to
10:05
talk a little bit about
10:11
Her name was Mary Bojacloo.
10:15
Mary Bojac Slooh. She was born in
10:19
Albania in the year 1910.
10:22
She lived a good long life of 87 years.
10:28
66 of those years she spent in service
10:33
as a missionary to the poorest of the
10:38
world.
10:40
She's better known today
10:43
because of her life of living as a nun
10:47
in the Catholic church. She's better
10:50
known today by her saint name as Mother
10:54
Teresa. Mother Teresa
10:58
in 1931
11:02
at the height of an economic depression
11:06
across all of America and much of Europe
11:10
as well.
11:12
She decided to become a nun and so she
11:16
did. She made her commitment to live a
11:21
life to serve almighty God.
11:25
21 and she she was 21 at the time. She
11:30
was dedicated in 1931.
11:35
When she was asked where she wanted to
11:38
go for her service, she said to those
11:42
that were there,
11:44
she said, "Send me to the poorest and
11:49
the most needy in the world."
11:54
And so they sent her to Kolkata, India,
11:59
an extremely poor
12:02
part of the world. There was a multitude
12:06
of homeless.
12:08
Leprosy was rampant. Tuberculosis was
12:12
rampant. There were those that were
12:15
dying and they could she would they were
12:17
not dying with the dignity that we are
12:20
afforded today. There were those there
12:23
in that community that were on one
12:26
because they had the cash system in
12:28
place at that time in India.
12:33
Five different casts within society. The
12:36
fifth one at the bottom
12:39
was called the untouchables.
12:44
those who were sick and dying, those who
12:46
were unwanted,
12:48
those who were literally unloved,
12:52
and those who were uncared for.
12:56
In fact, at that time, 1931,
13:02
they were not even identified as being
13:04
human. They were called nonhumans.
13:10
She went to Kolkata
13:12
and she looked at the need that was
13:16
there. Now remember, she asked to be
13:19
sent where there was the greatest need,
13:22
where there was the most suffering,
13:25
where there was the most opportunity for
13:27
her to give of herself and her love and
13:32
the message of Jesus Christ the Savior.
13:38
It was said of Mother Teresa one time by
13:41
one of her critics. And anytime you're
13:44
doing something good, somebody is going
13:47
to find fault with it. There are always
13:49
out those out there who are willing to
13:52
point the finger.
13:54
There are always those out there that
13:56
are willing to point the finger. And
13:59
those who were there there were those
14:01
who said of Mother Teresa at that time
14:04
she was simply called Sister Teresa.
14:08
There were those that said her ambition
14:11
was to make all those who were needing
14:14
Christians.
14:16
Christians. Well, gracious. I wish
14:19
somebody would say that about me. that
14:23
these ministries that we spend our time
14:25
in and that we spend our resources with
14:28
God, that they would be for the purpose
14:31
of bringing people who are lost into the
14:36
fold of almighty God. That they would
14:39
become Christians.
14:41
Christians by their own decision that
14:44
they would fall to their knees and they
14:46
would say, "God, I am a sinner. God, I
14:50
am a sinner. Have mercy on my soul and
14:54
make me whole. Feed me, God, and make me
14:59
a child of yours.
15:02
Oh boy. For that type of criticism, it
15:05
was an absolute badge of honor that they
15:08
put upon her.
15:11
Let's go back to this Mother Teresa as
15:14
we came to know her.
15:17
She went to Kolkata, India and she saw
15:21
these who were called untouchables.
15:24
They took the name years later as the
15:28
elites and the means those who are
15:32
oppressed and broken.
15:36
Those who are oppressed and broken. When
15:39
I hear that, I think of Jesus. I think
15:42
of Jesus. And if you turn to the book of
15:45
Luke, chapter 4, and go with me down
15:49
there to verse 18,
15:52
Jesus said of himself at the start of
15:56
his ministry when he declared his
15:58
ministry in that little synagogue there
16:01
in Nazareth on that Saturday morning,
16:05
he said from the book of Isaiah where he
16:08
was reading, he said of himself, because
16:12
he He being God the Father because he
16:16
has anointed me to preach the gospel to
16:20
the poor. The poor.
16:23
He has sent me to heal the
16:25
brokenhearted.
16:27
Yes. H sent me to heal the
16:29
brokenhearted. Jesus said to proclaim
16:33
liberty to the captives. Liberty. those
16:37
who are outcasts, those who are
16:39
unwanted, those who are homeless, those
16:42
who are sick and in need. Proclaim
16:46
liberty to the captives, recovery of
16:49
sight to the blind, those who have not
16:52
heard the truth of the word of God.
16:56
Jesus said he was going to give them
17:00
those words of truth so that they could
17:04
see. So that they could see. So that the
17:08
scales of sin would fall from their eyes
17:12
and the burden of sin would fall from
17:15
their mind and they would be able to see
17:18
Jesus the Christ, the son of the living
17:21
God, as their savior.
17:25
Yes. Recovery of sight to the blind to
17:29
set at liberty those who are oppressed.
17:34
What's that word that the
17:37
untouchables gave themselves del? What
17:41
does it means? It means oppressed.
17:46
To set at liberty those who are
17:48
oppressed. He said just up above there
17:52
to heal the brokenhearted, the oppressed
17:55
and the brokenhearted.
17:57
Mother Teresa saw the need in these
18:01
downtrodden people called the
18:04
untouchables,
18:06
the tits
18:08
of India. And she saw them as the one
18:12
that God had sent her to minister to.
18:18
And in doing that, she was accused of
18:21
wanting to make everyone a Christian.
18:24
Well, what did Jesus say? Jesus said
18:28
that his ministry was going to be to
18:31
proclaim the acceptable year of the
18:34
Lord. Let me take time right now for all
18:38
of you who are listening. I pray that if
18:41
there is sin that you have not confessed
18:44
to God, that you will take the time to
18:46
do it. I pray that if you have not given
18:49
your soul to God in salvation called
18:53
upon him to forgive you of your sins to
18:57
put salvation upon you for you to become
19:01
a child of God. I claim for you this
19:05
time now that you have the opportunity
19:09
to do that.
19:11
This is the acceptable time of the Lord
19:15
for all who are listening and have not
19:18
yet given their lives to Christ.
19:23
Back to this Mother Teresa. She was an
19:26
amazing lady. An amazing lady. At the
19:30
time that she went into India, it's
19:33
estimated
19:35
that there were 160
19:38
million
19:40
of these untouchables in India.
19:44
160 million. And because of the cash
19:48
system and they being on the very bottom
19:50
of the structure, they were not even
19:53
considered human. They were unwanted.
19:56
They could only do those things that
20:00
were so meaningless
20:03
that nobody else would do them. Cleaning
20:07
out the sewers, cleaning up the trash
20:10
heaps, cleaning up the human waste.
20:14
They were not allowed to
20:18
cohabitate. They were not allowed to be
20:21
in the marketplaces with those of the
20:24
other four casts.
20:27
They were to remain separate
20:31
and they were to be cast aside,
20:34
unwanted.
20:35
They were to be downtrodden.
20:38
They were to be those that had no worth
20:42
in Indian society.
20:46
Thank God that there was a movement in
20:50
1947. It began with Maad Mandi to
20:55
eliminate the persecution of these that
20:58
were called unwanted untouchables.
21:04
Mother Teresa went to them
21:07
and she started recruiting others who
21:10
could see the worth of her mission.
21:14
And by 1995,
21:19
when she was 75 when she was 75 years
21:23
old, I'm sorry, when she was 85 years
21:26
old,
21:28
she had put together a coalition of
21:30
missionaries
21:32
that numbered about 4,000.
21:35
These 4,000 were serving in 128
21:39
different countries.
21:42
And her message, her message was that
21:46
love cannot remain by itself. These are
21:49
her words.
21:52
Love has no meaning if it remains by
21:55
itself. It's something that has got to
21:57
be given out.
22:00
What did Jesus say about love? A new
22:04
commandment I give to you, that you love
22:07
one another as I have loved you. By this
22:11
that they will know you are my disciples
22:13
that you love one another. The sermon on
22:17
the mount. Love one another. Love one
22:21
another. Mother Teresa she said love
22:24
cannot remain by itself. It has no
22:28
meaning if it is not shared.
22:33
It has to be put into action and that
22:37
act action is service to almighty God.
22:42
What did we read at the start? Be ye
22:45
doers of the word and not hearers only.
22:50
Be ye doers of the word and not hearers
22:53
only.
22:57
Whatsoever you do, do it heartily as
23:02
unto the Lord and not unto men.
23:07
She was asked on another time about
23:10
love.
23:12
And she said
23:15
that we don't have to do great things to
23:19
show our love for God and our fellow
23:22
man.
23:24
It is how much love we put into the
23:28
doing of those things that God puts
23:32
before us.
23:35
That makes our offering, the giving of
23:38
our lives something beautiful for God.
23:45
I'm thinking about that verse there in
23:49
Ecclesiastes that Solomon wrote 3,000
23:53
years and he says everything is
23:57
beautiful
23:59
in its own way.
24:02
Mother Teresa was a beautiful, beautiful
24:06
servant of God for her work. She
24:09
received many rewards toward the end of
24:12
her life.
24:14
Beginning with awards that she received
24:17
right there in the country where she was
24:20
serving in India.
24:23
The highest award she received in 1997
24:28
was a Nobel Pri peace prize for
24:32
humanitarian service.
24:34
when she told when she was told that she
24:37
would receive the money and back at that
24:39
time there was a cash given with it of
24:43
$168,000.
24:46
She said she wanted that money to be
24:49
given to the poor of India right there
24:52
in Kolkata.
24:54
Further, they were going to have a big
24:56
dinner for presentation of the award in
24:59
her honor. And she said, "No, don't do
25:02
that." But the money that you plan to
25:05
spend for this big dinner, she said,
25:07
"You give that money as well to the
25:10
poor, the needy, the homeless, the
25:14
downtrodden that live right there in
25:17
Kolkata, India.
25:22
I would like to leave you with this
25:24
thought.
25:26
I would like to leave you with this
25:28
thought. Everything that we have talked
25:31
about being ye doers,
25:34
doing all things unto God and not unto
25:37
men, those things have to have a
25:40
starting port point in your life. And
25:44
that starting point is when you say to
25:48
Almighty God, "God, have mercy on a
25:52
sinner such as me.
25:56
Take me, God,
25:58
remake me into what you would have me to
26:02
be. Cleanse me of my sin. Cleanse me
26:06
from all wrongdoing.
26:09
God, take these burdens from me that
26:13
have kept me from serving you
26:16
in faith. Almighty God, I call upon your
26:21
mercy. I call upon your salvation.
26:26
God, cleanse me. Whereas once I may have
26:30
been red as blood crimson on the snow,
26:36
now God make me clean and whole.
26:41
Save me, God, from those things that I
26:45
cannot save myself from.
26:49
Give me thy divine will, your holiness,
26:55
your salvation, that I might be a child
26:58
of yours. I pray I pray that you have
27:03
taken that into you and that you have
27:08
made that commitment to almighty God. I
27:12
pray that you have made that commitment
27:14
to Almighty God in the name of Jesus our
