These firestarters are easy to make using literal garbage. I've been making and using them for years and after testing tons of store-bought options, these are still the best! Pantry Preparedness is a trademark of Income School LLC, an Idaho Limited Liability Company

How's it going, my friends? Today I want to show you not only how to make these awesome fire starters, which, by the way, I have tried a lot of fire starters that you can buy and pay good money for. These are still my favorite. They're the very best, and I can make them essentially for free. So I'm going to show you how to do that with only what I have here on this table. It's just going to be free with just literally trash hanging around your house. But I'm also going to show you how you can use them to start a fire
0:30
In a really short video, which I'll link to right here, I showed how to make these ones before
0:35
but it was like lightning fast. So today I'm going to take my time a little bit more to show you these and honestly show you how they perform
0:43
because why would you bother making these if you didn't know how well they did? So first we have an egg carton
0:49
Hopefully it should be a little bit obvious, but the egg carton should be of the paper variety
0:54
not styrofoam. Don't use a foam egg carton to try to do this with
0:59
that will melt, this will burn. So we're going to start with that. The next thing you need is dryer lint
1:04
Now, ideally you would use dryer lint from like when you wash your cotton towels or sheets or whatever
1:09
and you wouldn't have so much like synthetic fabric in there. But honestly, I just grab whatever lint is in the laundry room trash can
1:18
I pull it out or sometimes I remember to tell my wife and she'll just set some aside
1:22
I don't have to take it all because we have a lot of laundry. I have a bunch of kids
1:26
but I just take out what, whenever I want to make some of these
1:31
or whenever I need some more dryer lint, and I just grab some out of the trash can
1:37
Oh, man. So what we're going to do is we're going to take this dryer lint, and we're going to literally just fill reasonably well
1:44
Kind of the more, the better. I mean, I don't want to pack it in like super duper tight
1:48
but reasonably tight is good. So kind of whatever lint you have, fill it in
1:54
and kind of pack in each of these holes in the egg carton
1:58
I want to minimize the hair, so whatever hair I get I am going to try to set aside
2:05
I have plenty of lint here, probably more than I often use, so I am going to go ahead
2:09
and kind of try to distribute it reasonably evenly across all of these It alright to compress it in pretty good Get some of this hair out here It doesn smell good However because of what we using we going to be sort of negating the smell of anything that could be in your lint
2:25
Because these fire starters are also the best smelling fire starters there are
2:29
All right, that's pretty good. It doesn't have to be perfect. All right, the next thing that we need to do is we need some wax
2:34
Wax is going to make this burn for a really long time. It's also going to help make these essential
2:40
waterproof. So anyway, that's part of why these are so awesome is because they're
2:45
basically waterproof. I literally take these scented candle warmer, these scented melts really that you just stick into a little warmer and they make your
2:56
house smell nice. My wife buys these all the time and after a while they stopped
3:00
to put out very much scent but rather than just dumping that wax in the trash we
3:05
dump it back in the container it came in. If you look close you can see that it's like
3:09
not the smooth top that it comes with. And then I can use it for this
3:13
This one is vanilla and caramel spice. This one from Yankee Candle
3:18
sugared cinnamon apple. Yeah. I'm going to go with that one first
3:23
All right. I don't want to mix these because I don't want to end up with any really weird smells. I'm going to take this
3:28
This is just a little backpacking camp stove that I have. A little igniter on it
3:33
I'm going to start it up. Then I'll take it. take this little pot that I have
3:42
and I'm gonna fill it with these melts. You could do this on a normal stove top too
3:48
but in this room I don't have a stove and I thought the camping stove would be a little bit cooler
3:53
I guess I do have a stove. I'm gonna set it on here. Now while that's going, that's gonna melt super fast
3:58
You can see that, it's already going, okay? Because this is really hot
4:02
I might cool that down just a little bit. But while that's going, I will say
4:06
another way you could do this is if you are buying wax, my brother's done this, he's bought wax in like little pellet form and just a whole
4:14
ton. And that way if you wanted like unscented wax for your fire starters, that would
4:20
be just fine. And so he's bought the pellets and then he just sprinkles the pellets on
4:25
sticks this in the oven at about 220 degrees and just lets it melt Both of these processes are going to end up working about the same and you going to end up with the same product That almost done
4:36
So while that's going, I'm going to go ahead and cut off the top. We don't need that. I don't really need this piece either
4:45
Set those aside. Those can be recycled or whatever. All right, we're good
4:50
I'll turn that off. So now I'm just going to gently pour some of this in and kind of thin
4:55
fill each one. That's why I kind of want this stuff down. I want the, I want this lint to be
5:03
covered when I'm done. Now in the process, some of this is going to kind of saturate the egg
5:13
carton. That's okay. That's going to help make the bottom part of the egg carton fairly
5:19
waterproof too. Notice I'm kind of doing these one at a time
5:25
Again, I don't really want to mix the flavors too much if I can avoid it
5:30
All right, so with that one, I was able to get seven of these done. We're going to go ahead and kick this thing off again
5:39
I will dump in this vanilla caramel spice. It's crazy. The majority of the wax on these things, even after you've used them all up
5:49
the majority of the wax is still here, right? So why throw it away when we can use it for such a
5:55
use. Like I said before it kind of saturates through that's fine. That's gonna make this pretty water repellent
6:25
a little bit extra. Let's see if any of these could probably use just a little more
6:32
Okay with a little bit of flavor mixing here. Okay now essentially we just kind of let that cool Now the other thing that we going to do then these first six I going to consider reasonably cooled The next thing we going to do though is cut these into individual pieces
6:57
Okay. Now most of this is pretty much waterproof. Now if they were to get wet, you'd see the parts
7:03
that are still paper that don't have wax on them. Those parts would soak. And they wouldn't
7:08
They wouldn't be ruined, but those parts wouldn't start super easily. But this dry part right here, I leave it dry specifically because my intention is not to get these wet
7:19
I usually store them inside of like a Ziploc bag, like a gallon freezer bag that are fairly durable
7:26
But if they're dry, this is the part that's easy to light. So if I can start either with a match or a lighter, I can start this, or if I just have a flint and steel and I can start some really, really nice small tinder
7:38
Then I'm in pretty good shape because I can use whatever flame I have there to ignite the corner
7:42
And once it gets into the wax and into here into the lint itself, this stuff's just going to burn and burn and burn for several minutes
7:51
It lights pretty easily, but it burns for a long time. So now that we've made these and we have 18 of them, why don't we go ahead and light some fires
