Mylar bags are great for food storage, but I had the question... Can you seal mylar bags with a vacuum sealer? I'll test it out in this video. Here are the products I used in this video. Today we're gonna see if a standard FoodSaver vacuum sealer
0:04
can seal a Mylar food storage bag. I bought this pack of food storage bags
0:10
I like Mylar, I think it's a great way to store certain kinds of food
0:14
especially for really long-term storage. And so I wanna be able to seal these
0:17
and I wanna know if my FoodSaver can do it. So, today we're gonna test it out for science
0:25
All right, this package that I bought comes with labels. These are stickers on here
0:29
even though it just looks like a piece of paper. It comes with, these are oxygen absorbers
0:34
and it comes with three different sizes of food storage bags. I'm gonna go ahead and just use a small one
0:40
and I'm gonna see about sealing in some of these apricots that I dried just recently
0:44
All right, we're plugged in and ready to roll. I'm gonna go ahead and open this up
0:49
and take a Mylar bag and open it up. The ones I bought are not resealable
0:57
That's kind of the next level that I would love to do, is buy some resealable ones
1:05
First, I wanted to try this out, see how well it works. All right, filled it up
1:10
Now, I'm not gonna try to do the vacuuming. I'm just gonna try to seal it
1:14
And I'm kinda doubting this is gonna put out enough heat to do it, but it's worth a try
1:24
Close that down, press the seal button. Okay. Anticipation's killing me, okay
1:38
Did it work, did it work, did it work? Okay, so it did make a little line across here
1:45
where it looked like maybe it sealed, and it did not seal, not even close
1:49
There was like no connection made. If you're gonna use Mylar bags, it looks like trying to use your vacuum sealer
1:55
is not going to work, but we can go ahead and seal these with an impulse sealer
2:00
So, let's go ahead and swap out the equipment. All right, now we are set up and ready to go
2:05
So, the first thing I'm supposed to do, after plugging it in and setting it on a stable surface
2:10
is to set the timer. For these Wallaby, these are five mil bags
2:14
that's the thickness. I'm supposed to set the timer for anywhere from about six to eight, so we've done that
2:23
Now, real quick before I seal this, I'm gonna do the one thing that I neglected to do
2:27
when I tried to seal it before, and that is to put an oxygen absorber in
2:30
Without the oxygen absorber, this doesn't last that long. The point is here that the absorber's gonna take
2:39
the oxygen out of the bag, not the air. So, I'm not expecting the bag to deflate or anything
2:46
but it is supposed to remove the oxygen and create a little more space in there
2:50
So, I'm gonna remove a couple of these. Set that on there and line it up just right
2:58
nice and straight. Put it on, press it down, till the light turns off
3:06
That was it. Yeah, that's better, that's gotta seal. Now, I have apricots in this little tiny little bag
3:12
They're gonna seal really well. And now that I have one of these, I'm excited to start storing a lot more things in bags
3:18
instead of other containers that are either more complicated to use, more expensive to use
3:23
or that just don't preserve the food for nearly as long. But if I'm honest, I am a little disappointed
3:28
that the food saver didn't work. I guess sometimes you kinda do have to use the right tool for the job. ♪♪
