We only have about a week left on our contract and then it is time to head off into the great blue sea. But it would be a good idea to make the boat sea-worthy first...

Well I've done all my washing inside. My curtains look great, they really needed a
0:20
wash but my lee cloth oh my goodness it is so moldy where my big bottom sits so
0:30
that's got to be re-washed. But now I'm on the outside and oh my goodness these
0:37
ropes are just ridiculous. We just leave them and of course they just get dirty
0:46
and as for the green slime it's just everywhere. Well the ones we can take off we're going to wash whereas the reefing lines
1:00
obviously we've got to do those on the boat themselves and I'm going to treat
1:07
myself to a new backstay rope so I'm really looking forward to that
1:16
So what's happening Beverly? Right so what I'm doing today is we are removing these
1:20
Genoa car lines because they're absolutely minging after the winter they've gone all green but what we do is we attach a piece of string with some
1:30
tape to the end and we put it through the pulleys because getting those apart
1:34
to put the lines back through is a pain. It's much easier when we've washed the line to
1:38
reattach the string that we've got through the pulley and pull the line back through the pulley and that way it's easiest way to do it so it has to
1:45
go round down through that pulley and I have to do a bit of line then back through this pulley and I'll do another bit of line so I'm going to wind up with
1:50
all sorts of bits of string in here but it's only temporary when we get the line back from getting it washed we'll just tie them all on again and just pull
1:57
them all through one at a time and the job will be done

Well I'm just prepping the sails, the ropes for the washing machine so I'm
2:37
to do that I just it's as if you're when you're knitting casting on so and it
2:46
just reduces the amount of line you have so yeah that's what I'm doing this was
2:56
one of the sheets well the weather's not great today it's blowing a bit so I
3:14
can't get on with the sail no so we're looking at passage plans hey I love
3:21
passage planning I know I know a lot of people going about oh electronic charts
3:27
that's all you need these days but you know what there's nothing quite like having a decent chart about the place I love having a chart in front of me that
3:33
I can just look down and see all the bits and bobs and we can sit around a
3:36
chart and discuss things I love having a chart yeah but you know what our initial
3:44
plans are because we're not we're just thinking initially as to what we want to
3:50
do now if you're a long time viewer of the channel you'll know we've been up
3:53
and down this coastline a number of times and you're probably looking at us and saying what in the name of the plan and I've done this coastline so often
4:00
they can probably do it with their eyes closed and the boat probably has a groove in the water well yeah I know but the thing about it is we want to do
4:07
something slightly different this time we have been talking to locals and we've driven up and down the peninsula and had a look from the land toward the sea and
4:14
we've identified one or two spots that we've gone past that we think we can
4:18
actually anchor in exactly it's one of them is actually marked as an anchorage
4:23
yes it is in the RAC pilot but it is one of the few there are others marked as
4:28
anchorage on the charts exactly so when you're on Navionics really zoom in to
4:36
the coastline yeah this isn't Navionics no I know it's not Navionics but if you
4:41
zoom in there's a little anchor just sorry Prudence if you zoom in there's a
4:46
little anchor just there and I know somebody who moored there and he seemed to be
4:52
all right if the wind is in from the north I think that would be a good spot to moor but the nice thing about it is six or seven hours down which is a tide
4:59
exactly so it means that you're not going to go any foul tide but also we're
5:06
looking at about how the tides work so for this area once it goes to low tide
5:12
the tide then goes south so we're going to be looking at low tides and when is
5:18
that going to happen in a sensible light one of the nice things about having
5:25
something like Reeds I mean with most of the things you get online you can't
5:29
really see that far ahead in terms of tides you can only do like a week ahead
5:32
really and maybe you've had some of the paid things it's different but on here I
5:36
can look right up to the end of the year but I've got April and low water at the
5:42
start of April is at half past 8 in the morning hmm so that's good I'm sorry my
5:49
mistake high water is a half past 8 in the morning low water is at 3 in the
5:54
afternoon right okay okay now sunset at this time of year it's round about 7
5:59
half 7 at night hmm so that only gives you like three or four hours which is
6:03
not a lot it'd be much nicer to have the low tide in the morning yeah now low
6:08
tide in the morning will be let's say sunrise about a week later about a week
6:16
later low tide is at 7 o'clock in the morning now one of the things that we
6:21
might do it will all depend on the wind directions because one of the things we
6:25
want to do this chart doesn't really show it very well but Ballyholme Bay
6:30
here is lovely and protected from the south once our marina contract goes bing we can go around the corner sit in Ballyholme Bay for a couple days if the
6:37
wind is from the south and last year we went south for the southerly wind we had
6:41
to motor me motor all the way down to Skerries hmm and it's a heck of a
6:46
distance I don't really want to do that I want to sail as much as possible yeah
6:52
but you know you've got a sort of like start looking at these things last year
6:56
we weren't anchoring in Ballyholme Bay no now we are because we found it to be
7:01
good so for the southerly wind I would go around there and sit and wait for the weather hmm also Beverly's mom wants us to go over to Carrick so that's got to
7:13
be squeezed in but what critical jobs have we got to do before we get anywhere
7:18
near going off well there's the seal yes that is currently on our currently on
7:25
the side deck on the side deck not a great place for it to be we also need to
7:29
service the anchor basically the plate underneath the anchor is wobbly and we
7:36
need to replace just 20 years old the plate underneath it we also we also like
7:43
to take the anchor out put it on the pontoon inspect it for wells or damage
7:48
things like that we like to look at the chain for any weeks that are any links that are failing and sometimes we swap the chain round so the end that's on the
7:55
anchor we put in the locker and the end that's in the locker we put on the anchor that means we have to move all the chain markers hmm but you know it's not a big
8:02
job to do we just rotate and if there's any of the galvanizing come off we got
8:05
cool galvanizing spray job fixed obviously we've got to service the engine engine needs done so that's another little job and as I said I have
8:16
did want to have a proper door well that has been shale yeah we wanted to fit
8:21
saloon doors to it but we've just run out of time so what we're gonna do instead is we're going to just our perspex is cracking down the middle it's
8:27
not good we're just gonna make washboards it will do us for the season
8:31
hmm when we come back here in October we will start the door project first yes
8:36
but the thing is you know you've got projects that you want to do and
8:41
projects that have to be done and that's a want to do the engines I have to do
8:47
yeah the engines have to do the having a saloon door is I want to do so that's
8:52
just been shelved but I do need washboards because what if that glass
8:59
fails if it's feels it'll split down the middle and then you're going to get over duct tape and that's no way to go that's not that's not really an option
9:05
so that has to be done so yeah we've got lots to do and but like I say planning
9:14
another thing we could do is maybe go into Strangford just depends and I see
9:19
about that that Anchorage is we can stop there after six or seven hours drop
9:23
thing it appears to be a sandy bottom be very nice if it turns out the weather's
9:27
going to change we can just go a couple of miles pop into Strangford and set out the bad weather if the weather is going to stay with is and be good then we can
9:34
come right down hopefully all the way down to Skerries it would be about a 10 hour passage but at least it's not a 14 or 15 hour passage like it was last time
9:40
yeah so so many options as always it's going to depend on whether there's a
9:47
little peculiarity then about this area here in the Irish Sea the south going
9:51
tide at low tide stops and becomes a north going tide at low tide but this
9:55
area in the middle is slack so that's this where it changes from the tide
10:00
going one way to the tide going the other way so the tides below Dublin are opposite to the tides above Dublin and which is why Skerries is another good
10:08
stop because by time you get to Skerries you're now into the other tide you're
10:13
just at the end of the slack area this area near Dundalk Bay yeah
10:17
tends to be the slack area so lots to think about lots to do lots to look
10:22
forward to and lots of planning to do so we're going to amuse ourselves by
10:26
sitting smelling our brand new charts and I feel like a crackhead right okay
10:38
well weather's been a bit iffy which is not good so anybody's been sailing
10:43
for any length of time knows that one of the greatest hazards you can do while sailing is to go into a marina and particularly in gusty windy conditions
10:49
it's not pleasant boats move around things like that happen but the second
10:54
biggest hazard you can face is taking gainer to Chandler's I mean we went in
11:00
to buy this lovely piece of line for our backstay and then this happened what is
11:09
that it's a new sailing jacket it's a new what sailing jacket I only bought a
11:16
coastal one rather than an offshore one oh I see so this was merely a huge
11:21
amount of money instead of a ginormous amount of money it's wrecked so I just
11:32
finished working so I finished my wee job which I do during the winter and I
11:39
thought you know what I deserve a treat so this is the treat I've bought for
11:44
myself so my old jackets gonna just get a wash and a re-proof and you've got a
11:49
new shiny one yeah well go out and get some more work
