Which items made the 100% Club (Double Your Money or Better) on Series 57 of Bargain Hunt
Mar 17, 2024
In this latest episode of Antiques Expert Expert we discover that Green from legendary 80s group Scritti Politti has joined the team of Bargain Hunt experts, the blue team are watching the auction unfold from a trampoline, that Raj Bisram has to explain what the function of doorknobs is to the red team, and - more importantly - we discover which of the items purchased in Series 57 made more than 100% profit. In other words, which are the items that doubled, tripled and even quadrupled the teams' money.
There are only 17 items which meet the Antique Expert Expert's elegibility criteria for entry to the 100% Club and the episode counts down from #17 to #1, analysing each of the antique experts' purchases compared to the baseline average % of Series 57 as a whole. This is the data the majority of viewers have, to date, never had sight of.
This episode of Antique Expert Expert highlights the importance of high-profit margins in sustaining a successful business and one of the unique challenges faced by Series 57 - the impact of the pandemic on production.
Despite the challenges, the experts navigate the auction scene with some admirable results, showcasing their expertise in a variety of venues, with Raj Bisram emerging as a standout performer - but not the ultimate winner - of the 100% category metric.
And of course we update the latest Expert Rankings Table, as the points awarded for each series/category grow organically with each episode of Antique Expert Expert.

Hello, and in today's episode of Antique Expert Expert
0:03
the lead singer of 80s pop band's Critibility, Green Gartside, is a surprise new addition to the team of bargain hunt experts
0:10
You got the right man, guys. The blue team, watch the auction on a trampoline
0:16
I'll take five now. Raj introduces the red team to door knobs and their usefulness
0:22
What are these? Pulling door hangars. Oh, wow. And of course, we count down to the item in Series 57
0:28
which made the biggest percentage, profit. Yay! Yay! Awesome! All there's some more on episode four of antique expert expert
0:37
I may know nothing about antiques, but there's nothing. I don't know about antique experts
0:42
We like to have a lot of fun on the show. And for insurance purposes, it's eight and a half thousand pounds
0:50
400 pounds. 20, 220, going twice, got to go against what now
0:54
Dead man walking! Category is 100% Club
1:14
Okay, so today we're in the 100% club, rather I'm not, but any antique expert who bought an item that doubled its money is
1:22
and that's why I'm offering a generous points scheme to acknowledge those individuals
1:26
Why is that important? Why is doubling your money important? Well, if we look at this guy, any idea who it is
1:35
Okay, what about now? Okay, that is Adrian Cadbury, who wrote the book on corporate governance
1:41
and was also the chairman of Cadbury's Treps for 30 years. He was the person who said revenue is vanity, profit, is sanity
1:48
But if you're only making 1% profit a year, then that's really not going to sustain your business very long
1:54
What we're really interested in is high percentage profit or high margin, however you want to describe it
1:59
and that's what we're looking at today. So that's the definition. Any item that sold for more than 100% is included
2:06
But there are some caveats, and that is that any item that costs less than 10 pounds is ineligible
2:12
Any item that was bought by an expert on his own, a bonus buy, is ineligible
2:17
And also any item bought for charity is ineligible. Now, just to put everything into perspective
2:28
we have a baseline here of what the average is for the season. And as you can see, it is pretty woeful
2:35
On average, teams, with their experts when they're shopping, generate across the board minus 2% return
2:43
If you include the expert's bonus buy, then that increases to 2%
2:48
So across the board. So if you're going 10%, 20%, 50%, 100%, then you're doing a lot better than any of those guys
2:56
But as I said, we're only interested in the 100%. So let's have a quick look at the fixtures for Series 57
3:06
Weird series because it was the first one affected by the pandemic and the lockdown restrictions
3:11
And the closure of various antique fairs obviously decimated the bargain hunt production schedule
3:17
and left them sort of having to create a whole load of filler best-of compilation episodes
3:22
from regurgitated archive content. So have no real relevance to me there, which is why
3:28
you'll find that in beige on the schedule. But they did produce about 22 episodes in Super 57
3:34
and it looks to me as if they exclusively used, say, an antique's warehouse
3:39
and closed the doors to the public and just had it for the day because I can't see any other customers in these shops
3:45
and they also did the token social distancing thing so you've got an expert peering around the corner of a cupboard
3:51
whilst the punters inspect the item and the expert makes an assessment from about
3:58
20 feet away. So in terms of the experts you participated, let's have a look at those
4:08
So there's our 30 that have participated since season 40 and here are the experts that participated
4:16
in season 57. And so these are the venues that featured in season 57. There's only six
4:23
because there was a reduced number of episodes. So basically Brackley, Lemmonster
4:27
Emmerston Melvin Ardingley Shrewsbury and Newark So out of the 184 items that were purchased in Series 57
4:40
150 made less than 100% profit at Orson. 10 of them did make 100% profit or more
4:50
but they were bought by experts on their own as part of the bonus buy scheme
4:55
Two of them also made 100%, but were part of the charity episode
4:59
Experts versus Experts. Five, items also made a hundred percent profit, but they cost less than 10 quid
5:05
which leaves 17, only 17, that meet the 100% Club criteria. So, in 17th place was Raj
5:17
with a Swedish glass vase that made 100% profit. In 16th place was Raj
5:23
with a large silver-topped cut-glass perfume bottle, which made 100% profit. In 15th place was Caroline with an angle poised lamp and this was an actual angle poised lamp by Herbert Terry
5:34
Technically you're not supposed to call refer to these lamps as angle poised unless they're by Herbert Terry
5:40
So that made a hundred percent profit. 14th most profitable was Tim Weeks's silver paperweight modelled as a camel
5:49
And 13th most profitable was David Harper's pair of bronze Arabian horses
5:57
The 12th most profitable item was this wooden standing retail display bear, so it's
6:04
basically as tall as a human, which cost 100 quid and made 100% profit
6:12
11th place was Raj's 1970s Jens wristwatch by Umaga. In 10th place we've got Kate's letterbox, brass letterbox which made 105% profit
6:26
Next in ninth we have Stephanie Connell's cast iron doorstop in the form of a RAM, 113% profit
6:35
Eighth place we have Caroline Hawley's scent bottle which made 114% profit
6:44
Seventh place was this blacksmith figure which made 131% profit and was bought by Ochuco and his team
6:53
And sixth place is Raj's brass car horn, which made 133% profit
7:02
Fifth place, Rajeshirem. What are these? Pulling doors at large, you know, they put one ball catches and pull the doors
7:10
Oh, door stop. No, no, not like a door stop, like a handle that you use to open a door
7:16
Okay, yeah, yeah, door handles. Oh, wow. Wow. Have you been living in an open place
7:23
world. How have you managed to not ever see a door knob
7:28
I think if we could get those for 25, you're almost guaranteed a profit at 25. Okay
7:34
What's the lowest you can go? 25 and that's your lot. I really like them
7:39
I really like them. It's the sort of thing that you're going to go to the high street and spend £100 plus on a set of eight like this
7:46
I think they're fabulous, really, really cool things. Your estimate? I put 20 to 40, but who knows
7:51
Well, I think they got them at a snip for 20. 25 pounds, but all day long
7:55
Only town will tell. Yes. I've got telephone interest in. $25,000 paid. Also got commission interest
8:00
which starts me straight in at 30. Whoa, that's good. 32. Where's 36 online
8:06
They are fabulous. They are gorgeous. Come on. 36, 38, make it 40 online
8:11
I'm 50. Bid me 55 now online. I need 65 if you're coming then
8:15
Bit more. Fair warning. Bit more. Bones in and I sell at 60 pounds this time
8:20
Thank you. Well, well, okay. Fourth place, Tim Weeks The quality of here, it's just shining back at us
8:29
I think this is really nice. What do you think it's going to be? It's about 80 pounds
8:34
80 pounds? Well, I think you're going to be in for a pleasant surprise. Have a look. 45
8:39
45, okay. Wow, amazing. I reckon we could shave that. Something closer than 30 pounds
8:44
I know. So what's the best price you can do on this? How much aren't they? 45
8:49
Do 40. We're thinking hopefully about 25 around that mark. No, we're not going to get that far
8:55
I will go down to 30 though. I think that's a really fair price. Do you reckon they'll do well in there
8:59
I think we got a good chance. Are we happy? Yeah. What's your thoughts
9:03
What nice as I graduated They in a nice condition They have got true wage I can tell by the threads and the actual copper coming through from the joins of the handle What your thoughts on estimate on those Between 50 and 80 pounds
9:13
Well, they paid 30 pounds for them. So they'll be absolutely delighted. Cooking on gas indeed
9:18
I've got 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 times. Oh my God. I'll take five now
9:26
We've seen this phenomenon before at auctions, but these are the most bouncy contestants I've ever seen
9:32
They're not really in sync, so they could probably work on that. But these two are literally jumping up and down like two pistons and a traction engine
9:40
Take five now. 80 pounds or out of the room. Come on
9:45
80 pounds. Going, going, going. Sold. Wow. Eighteen. Third place. Stephanie Connell
9:55
So the London mark is a leopard's head, which then the letter for the date
10:00
It's a letter C, which is a letter C, which they denoted. is for 1899. Stephanie Connell, unfortunately, is off the mark
10:08
She's out by a year here, I'm afraid. She's there with a loop looking all kind of professional and on top of it
10:15
And then she misidentifies the year as 1899. Now, anybody knows that the London Silver C stands for 1898
10:24
I mean, it's obvious, right? It's older than 100 years. It's getting there. It's getting there
10:30
No, it's there. It's already there. It's been there for 24 years
10:36
Already. It's 124 years old. It's older than 100 years. Absolutely. So there you go
10:42
It's got a little bit of damage. But it is nice and it is Victorian
10:47
So it's £60 that one. Okay. Best price. 30. I think it's got a chance at 30
10:57
30 sounds a lot like 25. Go on then. Go on then
11:01
Do you want to do it for 25? Should we? Should we? Should we? Should they
11:05
Should you? I don't know. Should you? You're part of the team! Yeah, I know I'm part of the team
11:09
Should you? Well, then that would be it. You'd have finished and everything. Yeah. £25
11:14
I think it's got a chance at 25. It comes down to an item like this
11:18
to what they've paid. We dated it as 1898, so good age
11:23
End of the Victorian era. An estimate? 25 to 40. Okay. I think they got that for a pretty reasonable £25
11:30
Yeah, that's good. Okay. Happy with that. Lot 62, this is the hallmark silver topped glass set bottle, 1898
11:38
Start me 40 pounds. Straight in, thank you. Yes. 40 pounds. I need 46 now
11:43
Come on. Where's 46? Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on
11:47
Come on. 50. £60. £70. £70. £70? £70. £7. I will sell then this time at £70. Yes. Yay! Whoa
12:01
Second place, Stephanie Connell. That's a deco bottle. Tis. Tis. So that's a good way to explain it to you
12:09
I'm going to go with the bottle. I'll let the dealer know. So Blue Team, and they start off with the..
12:16
A piece of art, deco, a cologne bottle, with this original label
12:21
It's got everything. It's got a bit of advertising. It's the deco look, isn't it
12:26
People want. So if the money is right, I think it's a great buy
12:31
Estimate? 20 to 30? Yeah, 12 pound paid. So I think that was quite a..
12:36
She knows her stuff, doesn't it? A bit of a step. She knows it when she sees it. Is there a profit to be had
12:41
Let's find out. Fantastic example. 20 in a way, please. 20 is bid straight in online. Thank you
12:47
Where's 22 now? 22. Make it 24. 26. Make it 28. Whoa
12:53
30? Make it 36 now online. It's 34 in the room then
12:57
I will sell at 34 pounds. 34 First place Philip Cyril
13:07
How much is that sir And do you think it's Could make money
13:12
Yeah I do Up is that fabulous elm bench I love it
13:15
Philip loves it You love it I'm sure the auctioneer loves it It costs 35 pounds
13:19
And it's coming up now Yeah it's a beautiful bench actually It does It looks to me like it's come straight from Hogwarts
13:25
You know Maybe the Weasley twins brought it with them 45 big 140 pounds 150 any one last chance
13:34
Gabble's raised You made 105 now for the pound So vote on to Phil an excellent result there First time he lucky enough to have been assessed by the antique expert expert
13:47
and he gets it spot on with a 400% percentage profit on his Elm bench
13:58
So very quickly I'll just explain about how the points have been allocated
14:02
and as I said there's a lot of points here available for this category
14:06
So if you've got 17 items that qualify then in first place you're going to get 17 points
14:14
In second you're going to get one less, you're going to get 16 and one less for third and so forth
14:19
until you get down to one point. And if you have multiple entries in the charts, then you're going to get compound points, simple as that
14:32
So all of that means that as a result, of the generosity of the scoring system
14:38
Raj Bishram has somehow shot to the top of the charts and Stephanie Connell is second
14:44
But we are only after four events. Some of the experts haven't even been assessed yet
14:49
And so there they will stay until I add more points to the league rankings table
14:58
So yeah, Colin, Catherine and Charles are bringing up the rear still
15:03
Although in fairness, they didn't participate in season 57 so there's not a lot they could have done about their league position
15:08
as of end of three events. But of course Charles was featured in season 57
15:14
because he did quite a lot of auctioneering. But I'm going to scrutinise auctioneers separately
15:19
at another time, maybe another lifetime. So just before I conclude this episode
15:30
there are a couple of honorary mentions and these are guys or items
15:35
that made a considerable profit but weren't eligible for the 100% club because they cost too little basically
15:41
but we have Tim Weeks his pincushion in the form of a teapot which made an impressive 400% profit
15:49
and would have equaled the would have shared the lead with Raj if that had been bought for one pound more than it was
15:59
which was nine pounds and then Phil also had another item up there that made 300% profit and that was a manometer by Philip Harris and a
16:16
manometer is obviously a system for measuring masculinity and then Steph had a
16:27
Victorian pair of brass candlesticks that made 233% profit as well it's not
16:31
easy making profit on candlesticks so fair play to those three but they're very
16:35
no point, sorry, nothing no pour for those, they didn't cost enough. So you don't get anything
16:42
for items costing less than 10 pounds in this category. And so all the remains is for me to
16:54
activate the bingo sphere and generate the next random series to turn my attention to. So let's do that now
17:04
It's slightly fiddly
17:17
Ah, it's a relatively early one, 41. Series 41. So all that remains is for me to thank you for watching until the end
17:29
and to hope that you enjoyed today's content and this insight into an aspect of season 57
17:37
And to remind you to like, subscribe and hit the notification button to be informed of when
17:41
I publish my next episode which would be on season 41. And of course if you have any questions about any of the antiques that you've seen on today's
17:51
episode then you have to find an antique expert to answer them because I may know nothing
17:57
about antiques but there's nothing I don't know about antique experts
