Hi guys this episode Lee shows exactly how we patch our ferro sailing boat while its out of the water in Langkawi Malaysia.
Yes our comments are still disabled unfortunately we can't do anything about that so to comment go to our post Episode 146 (which I cant put a link to) and comment there or Sailing

Alright so we constantly get asked how to fix a ferro and I've actually got the
0:05
products out in front of me now that I use and the procedure in which I do it
0:09
I've had a little bit of a bubble here so I've chipped away at that I've taken
0:20
that back, see the wire hanging out there it's only just the outer layer so I'm
0:26
gonna seal this up and then I'm gonna put some mega epoxy over it, prime it
0:30
anti-fail it, job done. Pretty simple little fix, got one over here too
0:38
You can see it's only just in the top layer you can still see all the chicken
0:42
wire and behind that's all the Rio it's only just just the top bits let go and
0:48
this is what you want to get to so I'll seal that up now with some epoxy and
0:55
then prime it and then I'll epoxy fill it and then prime and paint it job done
1:00
That was it, two little bits I could have left them but I chose to
1:05
chip them out. Prevention is better than cure with these old girls. Four years
1:13
ago I did a patch and it's good as gold. Same procedure. Alright so we constantly
1:22
get asked how to fix a ferro and I've actually got the products out in front
1:28
of me now that I use and the procedure in which I do it. So guys what we start
1:34
with is obviously what we just showed you a second ago how I've chipped out
1:39
where the blister was, brought that all back to nice clean concrete, cleaned it
1:44
up, gave it a good wash down, gave a little cleanup with alcohol and then the
1:51
next step will be to prime it and seal it or to seal it with this ultra lock
1:56
that's a two-part epoxy sealer. What's the measurements there
2:06
I can't tell you. Oh this is a Lee measurement. Secret recipe that one
2:13
It's like equal parts to me. Is that wrong? I'd say you're right
2:20
Equal parts white clear stuff and brown stuff. 50-50 mix. How long do you mix it for captain
2:30
Mix till your heart's content. You probably mix it for a couple of minutes
2:37
She's good to roll. I'll just light my little chisel mixer. Bella will show you how she applies it
2:47
Oh Bella's gonna apply it. Apprentice is getting some instructions from the master
3:01
It's a lovely colour. You want to put on a generous amount to cover the exposed part
3:10
of the hull. Good job baby girl. How's it look? Like gravy. That's it. There we go. That's it. Here it is everyone
3:29
So that will soak in there and seal that up. How long do you leave that for
3:36
You can let it go off. Sometimes I get a bit impatient. I probably let it go off for a couple of hours
3:42
Two hours? Depends on the heat. Where we are now it'll probably be set in an hour. Back home probably three hours
3:49
Alright so for clear instructions for the people at home probably read the tin
3:53
Lee recommends one to two hours ladies and gentlemen. Hull number two. Bella's really working it in this time
4:03
So as you can see it's just the top layer that's been affected
4:07
This is actually probably about 50mm thick. Something like that. And you can see there's chicken wire here and behind that will be the actual mesh of the boat
4:18
As long as you can see the chicken wire. It hasn't even gone through the chicken wire yet, the rust
4:23
So catch it at this stage. Easy fix. Leave it for a few more years and it may get into the hull
4:33
Like when we first bought Gataupa there was a couple of spots that had been neglected
4:38
It goes a long way. Don't mix up as much as needed
4:47
Well done beautiful. Looks like a bird. Look at her eye. Right there. There's even a dark circle
4:57
It looks like an emu's head. So like Lee said the hull looks mighty fine
5:04
The patches that he did have all held in there and we're very impressed by the old girl
5:12
Bella not doing a good enough job. There was a bit of a crack there. I thought I'd just poke it into it
5:17
I poked it in. So more instructions is really lather it on, soak it all up
5:23
Sealing right? It's a sealer. Just double checking that she's good. Teamwork is what makes the dream work
5:33
Woohoo! Team Gataupa. So once you've done that you let that set. Sew on
5:43
Next part is to fillet. These are just little small drums that I keep on the boat just as a bit of a backup if we need to do a patch
5:51
That's your mega epoxy, another two part epoxy mix. Which is super strong and that's what we'll fill the hull with
6:03
Equal parts of that hey? Equal parts. 50-50. Mix together really well until you get a nice consistency
6:39
We're headed to the same place anyway. Okay so in the tropics or in the sun
6:49
a good idea is to, whether it's an epoxy filler or this mega epoxy
6:54
is to have this laid out nice and thin on your board
6:58
Because if you don't, the epoxy's build a lot of heat and your mixture will go off really quick
7:05
If you're working with epoxy resins, epoxy filler, epoxy mega, epoxy whatever
7:10
leave it all nice and thin so it doesn't build heat. Put it all in a clump like so and right there will go off like that
7:21
Twice as quick as if you just leave it nicely flattened out
7:26
Mind blown. I would have thought the opposite. Good tip babe. Oh he's off
7:38
Then you basically do what dad is doing and place it on
7:42
Those years of plastering coming in handy once again. This stuff once it goes off is as rock solid too
8:14
So try and be as neat as you can because sanding it back is hard work
8:28
Over to the next one and repeat. Do do do do, and I'm so sick of pain
8:39
Do do do, but it's hard to agree with you. Blue sick this game I can't afford to be
8:48
Blue sick this game, and I know it's sex play. Blue sick my mind can't fight the words no I can't seem to find
8:58
The clean up is what, thinners honey? Um, no just a little bit of alcohol
9:06
Oh alcohol. If you get thirsty you can have a little swig too
9:10
Shark alcohol. And that cleans out the filler in it? Cleans out the nice epoxy I think
9:19
I'm not an epoxy expert but it works for the epoxy fillers
9:24
So if you're repairing and you're looking for your materials don't forget to get some alcohol
9:30
so you can clean up your tools. So if you look back in the movies when we first got Catalpa there was some quite big holes that we filled
9:38
So four years later there's been no leaks, no cracks, no nothing
9:43
They've all been fine. They are a little bit bigger those ones we had to tie a little bit of steel
9:49
Um, yeah very easy fix. So there you are guys, all those people out there that ask how to fix one, that's how you do it
10:00
Once it's finished there's another two pack carbo guard, this is a epoxy primer
10:09
Job done. Alright so for the rest of the day Lee's going to be grinding the deck
10:16
And the kids and I, see that blue rail? We're going to hand sand it
10:24
Takes forever. I've already gone around, we've already put paint strip on it
10:29
I've gone around and scraped it all off as best I could. And now, and I've sanded all the bottom of it but, so much work
10:39
Oh, we're getting there. Once this sanding's done it'll be so much better
10:47
It's not my favourite thing to do, it really isn't. So then I think it's a week today since we've been out
10:57
It's been all preparation. We've sanded for a week straight. They say the art of decoration is preparation
11:06
We don't like the preparation, we just like the decoration. We just want to paint
11:11
These poor tools. Another one just bites the dust. We've killed two sanders so far and we got another one yesterday so we went to town yesterday
11:21
which is a bit of a deal because you've got to get on a ferry and go across, hire a car, drive half an hour and get to town
11:27
So we did that yesterday and then the tool that we use probably most of all, just died
11:40
Yay! It bit me too. It bit me earlier. It cut him, it didn't actually bite him
11:48
It went straight down to the bone. I'm not going to have a shower now and hopefully not faint when I have a look at it
11:56
No, don't take it. I had to put the bandage on, I would have filmed it all but P gets a bit funny when he cuts himself
12:04
I found another piece. And he looked at it and I could see he was going to, so we just had to bandage it up pretty quickly
12:12
It's a little bit stiff. So it's the end of another day in paradise
12:19
Half defeated, all my tools are breaking. I thought I'd have a bit of paint on by now
12:26
At least the bottom of the boat primed. Found two little blisters, no dramas but just all time delay
12:35
One week and we're just still sanding. Join us next time as we finally get some paint on the old girl's bottom
