Delight to be joined by Shantau Cameron. Shantau, how are you doing
0:09
I'm great, thank you. How are you? Very well, thank you. Congratulations on the win over Katie Taylor back in May
0:17
How has life been following the victory? It's been very busy, but mainly things outside of boxing
0:24
Obviously, I've got the win. I was on a massive high, but I've just been busy doing bits and bobs now
0:29
but I'm actually back at Manchester. I arrived here today to start pre-camp and ready to go again
0:37
As the wind sunken yet, because it's a huge victory. Yeah, it's massive
0:42
I think a lot of people doubt with me, and I proved a lot of the doubt was wrong
0:48
and I think that's what made it a little bit more special for me. But I think, yeah, I don't think I'm really getting the credit
0:56
that I should be getting to the fact that I did, beat Katie Taylor in her own backyard
1:02
But yeah, it is what it is. But at the end of the end of the family are proud
1:06
I'm proud, my team's proud. And a lot of people that come over from the Fountain to support me
1:12
I made everyone in the Fountain proud. So that's what the matter is really
1:16
The bigger picture is the people that support me are absolutely delighted for me
1:21
that I make history that night and I did what people thought weren't possible
1:27
You mentioned going into Katie's, Taylor's back garden. How was it fighting in Ireland
1:33
and having to deal with that atmosphere? It was hostile. I think, to be honest
1:39
I thought it would have been a lot worse, but it was hostile, it was difficult
1:45
I learnt a lot about myself mentally that whole week, because it was a tough week
1:50
and had to poker face it and had to just keep myself mentally
1:56
mentally switched on and ignoring the news. noise, but I've been hearing a few bits and bobs from my friends, a few sponsors, my family
2:06
that things were happening over there. And I don't think it was very nice for some of the people that supported me
2:12
And my mum definitely didn't want to be coming back to Dublin. She actually told me yesterday it went for a walk
2:17
And she said, yeah, she's not going to come back to Dublin to support me if I go back there
2:23
Right, yeah, because obviously you ring walked first, and Katie Taylor took a long time
2:29
to come to the ring. Did nerves start to sit in? How did you keep your composure during those moments
2:35
I think I kind of knew what was happening and I just thought that week there was little things
2:42
there was little bits that were going on behind the scenes and I was kind of just laughing off thinking
2:48
if that's all you've got to beat me then it's going to have to be more than that
2:52
So things that were trying to like knock me off track and mess with me, I just had to think
3:01
the bigger picture, the bigger picture was winning on the fight night, so they've been
3:06
a walk before I just kept thinking this is just to get me cold switch me off to give her a better chance for winning And that why I generally am proud of myself that I got the win because all these little things that were against me
3:23
I just brushed them all off. And I did really learn a lot about myself. Not just as a boxer, but as a person, the stuff that I can be thrown at me in
3:32
I can just deflect it. And now I think I can do that have a lot of things in life as well. And how did you feel during the fight
3:38
Did you feel that you were winning the rounds? Did you feel heading towards a decision that you were going to get the nod
3:46
Because obviously one judge even scored at a draw, but most people had you winning by a few rounds at least
3:52
Yeah, I think the first few rounds I was thinking, well, this is okay, comfortable
3:58
Obviously, the crowd was, that was hard work because she'll throw a flurry
4:04
and honestly the punches would hit my arms and that and the pace would just erupts
4:09
and I'll catch her over a couple of good shots and it would just be silent and I remember I was just thinking
4:14
how the hell am I going to win the judges here because the crowd do have such an impact
4:19
and I'm just glad that the other two judges were very fair on the night
4:24
the judges give it a draw I don't know what they was watching but the ones that give me the win
4:30
I'm just so glad and so grateful that they were fair and they didn't, there was a credit to boxing because if they had jobs me
4:39
it would have looked very bad for boxing. And there's too many of them sort of decisions that are going about, and it's ruining boxing
4:44
So I'm just glad the crowd didn't have the impact on the judges
4:49
Did have a little bit of an impact on me, yeah? But on the judges, I've got the win, so that's all it matters
4:55
And what is the news on the rematch about where and when that might take place
5:00
So unfortunately what I'm being told is it's in Dublin again, it's for my belts again, and yeah, that's it really
5:10
So I've got to go through the same procedure, but I'm not too happy about it because I would like a few things in my favour
5:17
Obviously, I'd been walked first last time, stood there for much, it felt like an hour
5:23
It probably was about 10 minutes, but it felt like a very long time
5:27
and I just didn't feel like I was treated with much respect
5:30
It was just like I was just there as an opponent. Have you signed on for similar terms then
5:37
Was that part of the original agreement that the rematch would be on, again on Katie Taylor's terms
5:43
There's a few question marks because apparently it is, but yeah, it's just there's a few question marks
5:51
but I think it is all going to be on Katie's terms. Would you have liked to have gone down
5:56
a way to challenge for her titles in the rematch had the possibility have been there
6:02
Yeah, I think, like, if I'm going to go back to Dublin, I don't know how I'm going to get
6:06
myself motivated, and I do mean that because it wasn't a nice, it wasn't a nice environment
6:12
for me Like I was there for Katie Taylor when I coming I was a champion put my belts on the line and I felt like I just felt like I was just there as a number and I have such a good team that were backing me and like getting me fired up and egging me on
6:30
But the fact that I beat McCastell for my belts, she challenged me for my belts when she was in dispute at 147
6:38
I beat her, didn't get a fight with her at 147 because they said of her performance might good enough
6:43
So I never got a look into being match McStrell for her belt
6:48
but I had a chance to become two-weight and dispute a world champion. Katie Taylor, put my belts up against Katie, beat her
6:57
and then I was like, look, I want a chance to become two-weight world champion
7:02
It could have been done. I could have boxed her, but again, that's not going to happen
7:09
So I've got to put my belts on the line A game, and it's kind of like how many times I'm going to defend my belts against these
7:15
industry world champions when am I going to have a new challenge
7:19
when am I going to challenge to become two eight world champion or box at a different
7:23
weight to become a world champion so it's just a bit frustrating but yeah I find
7:28
the contract so I kind of just got to get on with it you mentioned mccascoe obviously
7:33
you've beaten her before um she's in line to fight sandy Ryan now that's been announced um
7:39
would you be interested in after the Katie Taylor rematch, would you be interested in fighting the winner at 147
7:45
So Tasha Jainis has the belt as well. So I'd like to see Tasha become undisputed
7:51
and I'd love to fight Tasha Jonas. I think a lot of sweat for Tasha
7:55
I see her as a friend as well. But I think me and Tasha make a good fight, a great fight
8:01
And British-R-R-British, it does the numbers. We both respect each other. There's going to be no garbage
8:09
and trash talk and it will be, that's what I would be interested in
8:15
And I think if Tasha guys were undisputed, I think it could be me less Tasha join us
8:20
Okay, that's a fight I'm sure everyone would look forward to. Going back to the reception you received in Ireland
8:29
did any of that come from Katie Taylor directly or a team herself
8:34
Because it seemed like there was quite a bit of mutual respect between the two of you
8:38
No, not from Katie at all. she's a legend, though, I have a lot of respect for Katie
8:42
Obviously, she's a massive hero event. She should be here as well. What she's done for women's boxing, what she's done for Ireland
8:49
She's just such a talent, and what a great boxer. So, no, there was mutual respect there. There was nothing from Katie's side
8:58
I think she deserved that homecoming. I said it, the builder, all five weeks, she deserved that homecoming
9:04
but I put myself there because I wanted to fight. I put myself in that situation
9:11
I've done it. I've got through it. I won it. And now it's like, do I really want to go back there and do it again
9:19
Like, I'd rather go somewhere. I'd rather go Madison Square Gardens, abbey-dabby
9:25
somewhere where I can have a bit more a bit more like what the way Like I be a bit fair but I just like take all that off my shoulders and not have to put up with some of the stuff that was happening over them
9:38
and just make it like a little bit further when do you think obviously with these
9:44
sort of contractual issues when do you think an announcement can be
9:48
expected to be made on this fight I think they're looking very soon
9:52
but I just I just want to make sure that I'm also last time
9:58
I just literally just said yes to everything because I really wanted to fight and I knew
10:05
it had to. Whereas this time it was hard over there. It was difficult
10:10
I don't think I give myself the best chances because I didn't know what to respect and I didn't
10:16
know how it would be over there. And I've kind of been there doing that
10:20
And the fact that people are saying to me like, she said, we're not going to come over because
10:24
things that were happening in the toilet, my mum doesn't want to come
10:28
Like, I just don't know how I'm going to get out for it. But obviously, if on contract, I have to anyway
10:34
But it would be nice if we did go somewhere different and have the rematch
10:39
But it was great in Ireland. Some of it, not all of it was bad
10:43
There was some great people there. They really welcomed me, which I was quite shocked at
10:48
So there was a fair few that were very welcoming, very nice
10:53
And afterwards, sending me a lovely message and stuff. And Katie's massive in Ireland
10:58
She's massive worldwide, but in Ireland, she literally is like, God, so I knew what to respect
11:03
But as the champion now, I kind of just don't see why I would go there and have to be, have to be, like, in that position again
11:13
Yeah, I understand that. I don't think it's me being brave. I just think, like, if I have to go, I have to go
11:21
But I would like to have it a bit more neutral where I don't have to fight
11:27
Katie and everyone else. Yeah. Literally like I was fighting everyone in that arena
11:33
It was just, it was a lot. But then I suppose you've got to look at it from that side of you
11:38
that you've come through, that that side of it, that all the odds were stacked against you
11:42
you still come up on top. Yeah, yeah. And I have a great team as well
11:46
My team really had my back and they got me through it
11:51
And I just, if it weren't for them, I don't think I wouldn't even coach with the Vingwark
11:56
because it was long. I took my vibe off because I didn't know
12:00
it was going to be a long ring walk and especially because
12:03
my ring walk I was kind of told we're going to start
12:08
filming from the changing room so that it's not long and then next thing
12:12
I'm standing in the ring waiting and it was kind of like so I was rushed out
12:17
to do my bin walk ready to wait 10 minutes and it was kind of like
12:21
it just won't be nice But you got through it though Yeah, yeah
12:28
I still got the win anyway And that's the funny thing is All that and I still got the win
12:33
And just shows you Like you can't break it You can't break me Nothing can break me
12:37
