Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes
Ingredients:
4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold)
1 onion, sliced into rings
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups milk
1 ½ cups shredded Cheddar cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon thyme
Instructions:
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare Potatoes: Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with the onion slices, then add the remaining potatoes.
Make Cheese Sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until the mixture has thickened. Stir in the cheese until melted and smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings.
Assemble and Bake: Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
Serve: Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
This classic French dish is perfect as a side for any meal, especially with roast meats or a fresh green salad
