This is a supplemental video to our page titled "Make a Cigar Tube Circuit Tester".
This video is meant to demonstrate a typical circuit tester one can buy online or in a store. The way the particular circuit tester works in the video is by attaching the alligator clip probe to a negative point or grounding point of a circuit, in the demonstration in the video a 9V battery is used, so the alligator clamp is clamped to its negative terminal. You then touch the pointed probe at the end of the handle to a point in a circuit that has a voltage potential, or in the case of the demonstration in the video, the pointed probe end of the handle of the tool touches the positive terminal of the battery and then the LED within the circuit tester's handle lights up when a voltage potential is detected or is across the two probes of the tool, closing a circuit through the tool. It's also demonstrated that the polarities of the the probes can be exchanged within a circuit to still give a reading from the LED within the tool's handle.

Okay, I have the circuit tester here again, and for this demonstration, I just wanted to show that again
0:15
again, when I connect the alligator clip to the negative terminal of this 9-volt battery
0:23
and touch the probe in to the positive terminal of the battery that
0:29
the LED within the handle lights up. But the LED will also light up if I were to
0:39
take this alligator clip and switch it over to the positive terminal of the
0:45
battery and take the probe end and touch it to the negative end of the
0:53
terminal or the negative terminal of the battery. The LED will still light up
0:59
So for this circuit tester you can switch around the alligator clip to either clamp to the positive terminal or the negative terminal and the LED will light up within the handle either way
