How 'The Substance' broke the Oscars mold

We're here today to talk about the Oscars guys because the Substance got five nominations

At Matchable, we love Har, we love Demi Moore, we love when movies go, hey, let's get freaky with it

And the substance does all of that. And what's so cool though is that typically the Academy, when anything gets weird and horror, they're like, hmm, what was that

They can't see it. Genuinely, why the Substance has done so well with the Academy is all to me

And I think that is because she turned in an amazing performance, but also, Her being in this movie has an inherently meta context where it's about someone who was a sex symbol

looking back on their career and realizing they're being ignored. And I think people looked at me in that role and were like, what does she have to say about that

Because it's inherently then a commentary, right, on her own career. And then she won the Golden Globe and gave such a beautiful speech

I've been doing this a long time, like over 45 years. And this is the first time I've ever won anything as an actor

I also love the idea of rewarding an actress for doing a transformative performance like this because I think this is typically something that we praise male actors for and not so much female actors for I think it really exciting to watch actresses have to bend themselves in this way

where they are taking a provocative, a sexy performance to such an extreme that they become monsters on

screen, and we still feel for them. And I love that. Like, I've written about why I love the substance

why I think it's the ultimate New Year's Eve movie and you should watch it every year to just be like

New Year, New Me, Monstro. And here's the thing. Even if you hate the substance, and I understand it

I've heard the commentaries. I get it. It's exciting for the Oscars to pay attention to a horror movie like this

Because when they do, you immediately see people go, like, well, that's not really a horror movie

Silence of the Lambs isn't really a horror movie. Get Out's not really a horror movie

Yes, they are. Yes, they are. Yes, they are. Stop it. Just because something is highbrow doesn't mean it's not horror

What I love about the substances, the substance is not highbrow. Corley gets it

The director understood the movie she was making. She made this weird, gross-out midnight movie

And the fact that like the elites, they're like arti people also like it is really exciting

But it also is 100% the kind of movie you would see on like Up All Night with Gilbert Godfrey

Even Dennis Quaid, just him eating shrimp is, that's the scariest thing in the substance
