'Old Guy' stars Lucy Liu and Christoph Waltz debate what makes something art

know, fulfill all the things that she's always wanted. And she's just been waiting for this moment and it doesn't turn out exactly the way that

she thought. And it becomes quite disappointing So there a feeling of you know deep rejection and a loss of time too There a conversation that Christophe your character has with Cooper character about whether or not what they do is an art form

And there are, I'm an actor, I went to theater school, I've been acting my entire life

And there are many actors I've worked with who consider acting to be a job, you know, versus an art form

Where do you fall on acting being an art form versus a job

I like the fact that you call it where do I fall because that's exactly true

I trip first over that thought and then I fall. Look, anything can be elevated into an art with the necessary effort, the necessary perspective, the necessary..

They are sort of parameters. But even painting, composing music can be just a job

And so that actually is a long and complicated discussion, what makes an art out of a job

But it definitely worthwhile to keep it in mind and have it in the back of your head always simmering that yes would you apply the right parameters

Then maybe, if you're lucky, it could be viewed later on as art

What does not work for sure is in acting, especially if you set out to create art, that's where you, as I said, trip and then fall

I love that answer. Lucy, same question to you. I mean, there's some things that are, you know, is art, but it's not something that you you can't say that, you know, I mean, even if you're working on like a painting

it's a scramble to get it to where you want it to be you know because in your mind you have an idea

of what it is visually and when you're doing it the actual doing of it is quite different

right sometimes when you stop at a certain place when you're painting that's the place to stop

you know and you don't know that right or you should have stopped a long time ago

So it's really this energy that's being created and whether or not it becomes art or becomes a classic or something that more commercial you really don know I mean you fall you fail And then you know 20 years later it

called a classic. So you have to be in the moment, in the present, in order to know

that's all you can do, you know, and that is what your, you know, opportunity is

is to fill that moment with as much of yourself as you can

And the rest is really not up to you because you're losing the present and where you are

And you're futurizing or you're stuck in the past. And that's a loss of time

So for me, art is about seeing something and it's inspiring, right

And sometimes you think you're making something that's very artful and you look at it later and you think well we tried you know and uh that's all

you can do because but in the moment when you were doing it it was something really special but

the result of it is quite different so you can't look at it um in that it's not black and white
