Welcome back to Wild But True, and today
0:02
we're going to talk about the polar
0:04
bear. The polar bear is an iconic arctic
0:06
predator that sits right at the top of
0:08
the food chain in its environment. These
0:11
magnificent creatures have many
0:12
incredible adaptations that allow them
0:14
to thrive in one of the most
0:16
inhospitable environments on Earth.
0:19
Let's take a closer look at this fierce
0:21
Arctic hunter. Number one, what's the
0:24
no? One thing polar bears eat, seals.
0:27
That's right. These bears are mostly
0:28
eating ringed seals, but also bearded
0:31
seals. And just one seal can give a
0:33
polar bear all the calories it needs for
0:35
a whole day. No. Two. How do polar bears
0:40
stay warm in freezing temperatures? As
0:42
any hunter or anyone who has spent a lot
0:44
of time outdoors will tell you, it's
0:46
important to keep warm. If you don't,
0:49
you could die. If you're polar bears,
0:51
this is no different. Luckily, they have
0:53
two main things that help them keep nice
0:55
and toasty.
0:57
First, they have a dense layer of
0:58
underfur that consists of short soft
1:01
hairs. This underfur is so thick that
1:03
scientists have estimated there could be
1:05
as many as 1,000 hairs per square cime.
1:08
Underneath this, they have a thick layer
1:10
of body fat that can be up to 4.5 in
1:13
thick. All of this helps to insulate the
1:15
polar bears and keep them warm even when
1:18
temperatures reach as low as -40° F. No.
1:21
Three. If you've ever seen footage of
1:24
polar bears swimming in the water, you
1:27
probably thought to yourself, "Wow,
1:28
those guys are great swimmers." Well,
1:31
luckily for polar bears, they are
1:33
excellent swimmers. They're strong
1:35
swimmers and can swim for days at a
1:37
time. In fact, polar bears have been
1:39
recorded swimming for more than 100 km
1:41
or 62 mi without stopping. When you're
1:44
swimming that far, you definitely need
1:46
some rest. But lucky for these bears,
1:49
they are able to sleep while swimming.
1:51
No. Four. Can polar bears attack humans?
1:55
When you picture a polar bear, what kind
1:58
of thoughts come into your head?
2:00
Personally, I think of an enormous white
2:02
beast that would happily chomp me up in
2:04
a single bite. It turns out my thoughts
2:06
are not too far off. While attacks are
2:09
rare, polar bears will attack humans.
2:13
Most attacks happen when the bear is
2:15
hungry or feels threatened. Unlike some
2:17
other predators that chase down their
2:19
prey, polar bears will sometimes stalk
2:21
their prey, which can include people.
2:24
So, if you're hiking or doing anything
2:26
else outdoors in polar bear territory,
2:28
keep an eye out for these large
2:29
predators. No. Five. How strong are
2:33
polar bears? Have you ever been hit by a
2:35
polar bear? If you have, I'm sorry, but
2:37
also, can you please tell me how you
2:39
survived? I think it's safe to say that
2:41
most of us, if we were ever hit by a
2:43
polar bear, would probably be knocked
2:45
over and seriously injured. But what if
2:48
the polar bear wanted to finish the job
2:50
and eat you? You'd definitely be in
2:52
trouble because polar bears are
2:53
incredibly strong. One swipe of their
2:56
paw could easily knock a person over.
2:58
And once they had you on the ground,
3:00
their powerful jaws and teeth would
3:02
quickly end your life. They can easily
3:04
crush bones with their bite. No. Six.
3:07
Can polar bears run fast? Because polar
3:10
bears are so big and heavy, you'd think
3:12
they would move fairly slowly. But
3:14
that's not the case. In fact, polar
3:17
bears can run up to 40 km or 25 mph in
3:21
short bursts. That means you would be
3:24
able to outrun a polar bear if you saw
3:25
one running towards you. No. Seven. Are
3:29
polar bears stalkers? Polar bears are
3:32
known to be fierce predators, but
3:34
they're also very stealthy. You probably
3:36
expect them to charge at their prey, but
3:38
that's not always the case. Instead,
3:40
polar bears are often sneaky and stalk
3:43
their unsuspecting victims. This is
3:45
especially true when hunting seals. The
3:48
polar bear will slowly crawl up on the
3:50
ice and freeze when the seal looks their
3:52
way. After the seal swims away, the
3:55
polar bear will then make its move and
3:57
try to catch the seal. So, even though
3:59
polar bears are not the cutest animals,
4:02
thanks for watching.
