You're looking at one of the ocean's
0:01
most fierce predators. Hi, Malcolm
0:04
Walker here and this is my channel. You
0:06
probably already know that sharks are
0:08
the fiercest animals in the ocean. But
0:10
there is one seal that can go toe-to-toe
0:12
with the great white shark. That's
0:13
right. This seal will gladly fight a
0:16
shark and has even been known to win.
0:18
It's called the leopard seal and it
0:20
lives in the Antarctic Ocean. The
0:22
leopard seal is why penguins huddle.
0:25
Just kidding.
0:27
But seriously, this seal is one of the
0:29
main reasons why penguins form those
0:31
tight groups. If they were to be out in
0:33
the open, they'd be an easy target for a
0:35
leopard seal. And these seals aren't
0:38
afraid to work hard for their food.
0:40
They'll happily swim for hours just to
0:42
catch a fish or, you know, a penguin.
0:44
They've even been known to hunt other
0:46
seals. Believe it or not, even though it
0:48
looks like a seal, the leopard seal is
0:50
actually more closely related to
0:51
walruses than anything else. They're
0:53
part of the Oda Biniday family, which
0:55
only has two members, the walrus and the
0:58
leopard seal. Walruses can grow up to 11
1:01
feet long and weigh over 3,000 lb. So,
1:04
why do they have such a big size
1:06
difference?
1:07
Well, because they live in different
1:09
environments. Walruses evolved to be
1:11
bigger so they could survive in cold
1:13
Arctic waters. Leopard seals, on the
1:15
other hand, evolved to be smaller so
1:17
they could be more agile in the water.
1:19
They're basically the acrobats of the
1:21
sea. But enough about its size. Let's
1:23
get back to why it's so fierce. When you
1:26
think of a seal, you probably think of a
1:28
cute, cuddly creature that likes to play
1:30
with tourists at the zoo. But don't be
1:32
fooled by its looks. The leopard seal is
1:35
a ruthless killing machine. They have
1:36
huge paws with sharp claws that they use
1:38
to slash and tear apart their prey. And
1:41
don't forget about those teeth. They're
1:43
long, sharp, and perfect for catching
1:45
and holding on to slippery fish. To make
1:48
matters worse, they're incredibly fast
1:50
both on land and in water. Land, they
1:52
can move at speeds of up to 25 mph. In
1:54
water, they're even faster, reaching
1:56
speeds of up to 30 mph. To put that in
1:59
perspective, that's about as fast as a
2:01
human could run if they had Usain Bolt
2:03
speed. But the leopard seal doesn't need
2:06
claws or teeth to be fierce. They also
2:09
have one of the strongest bites of any
2:10
mammal. Their bite force is over,300 lb
2:14
per square in. To give you an idea of
2:16
how strong that is, a hyena has a bite
2:18
force of around 1,000 lb per square in.
2:21
So, next time you see a leopard seal,
2:23
don't be fooled by its looks. It may
2:25
look cute, but it's one of the most
2:27
fierce predators in the ocean. Thanks
