Toxic workplaces. Is there such a thing or were you a bit higher on their part
0:05

0:26

0:32
Yes this is true constantly hiring is a red flag. It could mean they have a high
0:38
staff turnover because they are a toxic work environment. But lately I've been
0:43
wondering myself what a toxic work environment? Maybe you can't cut it right
0:47
You are a bit higher for them so that's why you couldn't hack. But some people
0:52
be surprised right? Some people have been working for the same company. You
0:56
are finding toxic for 5-10 years so maybe it wasn't the right fit for you
1:00
which is okay. Do I sound clever? I think I do. Luna can agree. Okay so I thought
1:07
let me have a chat about toxic work cultures and us as candidates seeking
1:14
jobs. And I'm not trying to excuse employers that do not honor what they
1:19
said because I do understand sometimes right during the interview process this
1:23
company will offer you the world right? We've got a payment plan commission. We
1:29
will give you this. We will do this for you. We've got open door policy. You come to join
1:34
them and that's not the case. I am not excluding that. But what I want to
1:38
address is us as candidates right? I think that's what's more relevant to
1:43
this platform and what you guys come for. How to safeguard yourself against being
1:49
in a toxic work environment. I think it all starts from the interview process
1:53
right? Remember during the interview they're asking certain questions. They're not just asking those questions for fun right? There's a reason why. And as
2:00
candidates we try to put our best foot forward. We're like boys when they're
2:05
asking us out right? They leave out all the red flags. Yes I know I'm a female. I
2:11
also have red flags but I like to believe we're angels. There's not
2:16
people with a red flag. But you get the point right? We like to say hey I'm a
2:21
team player. What does a team player mean? Team player means you love working with
2:27
others on an assignment. You've got a project. You don't care about recognition
2:33
per se. As long as the team wins you are able to delegate. You know that even if
2:40
this work is not under your purview, not under your job descriptions but if
2:45
Lynn is not there at work you can happily pick up the slack. That's a team
2:50
player. But if you can go back to school. Did you like doing group projects? Did
2:57
you like doing group assignments at a home in your social circle? Do you love
3:02
it when your siblings, when you do all the housework and your mom comes back
3:06
and she's like oh girls thank you. The house is clean. Or you wanted to say thank you for cleaning the house. Think about it. So the thing is are you putting
3:17
yourself in a toxic environment yourself? Because they're asking are you a team
3:22
player? You're like yes I am a team player. But you know you're not a team
3:26
player right? So when those issues arise at work it becomes toxic. But it's not
3:33
toxic. That's how they roll. But you lied during the interview. Something to think
3:40
about guys. Right now should we be honest and say hey I'm selfish I like doing
3:45
projects on my own. Not necessarily. No I'm not saying do that but I'm just saying
3:50
the signs were there right? That this is how they work. So you know going into it
3:58
to expect that you can safeguard yourself from constantly seeking individualistic praise. You know what guys I promise you I'm intelligent. I'm
4:08
almost finished with my honors program and I literally had an assignment
4:13
last semester about this style of leadership everything. I've forgotten the terms. You gotta have to excuse me. So thank God this is YouTube. I can just speak in
4:22
layman terms and you get me right? Anyway let's move on to other things. The
4:27
second thing I wanted to point out which is a big thing we talk about which turns out to be toxic. The pace at which we work right? Companies hiring managers
4:38
particularly love to know your turnaround time. Right? Turnaround time how fast can you if you give an assignment how fast can you work. In the
4:48
interview we like saying hey I go above and beyond. If it's client feedback I'm
4:54
able to call clients right up and close the deal. This is particularly in sales
5:01
and marketing client facing roles. Right? We love saying that a lot you know. I can
5:09
call clients. I can you get a target. Yes I can chase 100,000 a month. I can hit my
5:18
previous company actually to do it. There's all things we say in and in
5:22
interviews which could be correct. Right? But you're forgetting these tight schedules are the thing you were running away from. Right? From your previous
5:30
company because it was a hectic. Now in sales I've worked in sales environments
5:35
for so long recruited sales roles. I went into recruitment as an agency which is
5:40
heavily sales driven. I got into it I thought it was more HR but it's so
5:45
sales driven because at the end of the day they want to see hey how much money
5:49
did you bring in for the company is and how many people did you place because we send them an invoice. Right? That's how recruitment agents work. They place
5:56
someone at a company a BNC. In company a BNC pays us a recruitment fee for us
6:01
finding them finding you for them. Right? So very sales numbers driven environment
6:07
And there are two sets of people they are hunters and they are farmers. I think
6:12
I've even talked about this briefly on TikTok. Join me on TikTok
6:18
Hunters are cold callers. People that will do anything for a deal. They'll get
6:25
to work super early to call clients to hunt them down to the deal. So your
6:33
strong business developers those people that are chasing these crazy targets and
6:36
they get paid money that reflects their hunter skills. Right? Which is quite good
6:43
Then also they're the farmers which are mostly your account managers. They also
6:48
do a lot of work right they make sure that once the client has been signed up by the hunters. Right? The client does not leave the company. The client does not
6:59
just has a great experience to hold the account and possibly farm the account
7:04
Let's say someone bought what am I wearing? Someone bought a ring. Right? So
7:11
an account manager will be like hey we've got a bangle what is this a bangle
7:15
bangle whatever that is cute in the same color as your ring. I think it would look
7:20
so they upsell. Right? So there's not a lot of account managers do. Then you also have
7:24
got a client success they make sure that it's in the word guys. Right? So those are
7:31
like farming jobs which are still great because you do need to go above and
7:35
beyond for your client to make sure that they don't leave. So everybody's pulling
7:39
their weight but the pace the hunger of it totally different guys. Right? So if
7:46
you're an interview space and you've been hired and you're like hey a during
7:50
interview stage you've got a persona of your hunter when you know you are an
7:55
account manager or you're a customer success or you are a they've got
8:00
different terms but you get what I'm saying. Right? And you get into a team of
8:04
hunters you're gonna think it's toxic because these guys are in it to kill it
8:07
Right? They steal each other's deals. It's really you eat they've got that mentality of you eat what you
8:13
what you hunt or what you kill. Right? You eat what you kill. Those are the terms
8:16
they use. So for you it's gonna be so hectic sleepless nights you get the
8:21
scare it's toxic but the problem is you you lied and you had this fake
8:26
persona that is you. And the same thing as if you are a hunter and you join the
8:32
farming side it's gonna be a drag. Things don't get signed off as fast as you
8:37
want you're not getting the same amount you thought you would. The team it's like
8:41
work you are demotivated seems like you're not progressing that's also another type of toxic environment. Right? Then also guys lastly a lot of people
8:52
complain about managers. Guys all of this it is addressed in the interview stage
8:57
You when they ask you hey or you can even ask them why did the other person
9:03
leave or what is your management style you can ask them in the interview or to
9:07
say hey in a team how does one progress how do we get sign offs who's got the
9:16
final saying this you'll be able to tell to say hey this person is the person
9:20
that is the what's the word guys I'm forgetting words this person is the
9:25
bottleneck I cannot progress to be if this person seems like this person is
9:29
called the power. You can get all of this during the interview. During an interview they're asking you right how do you feel about authority? Then you know either
9:38
they've had problems with someone they think it's an authority that they do
9:42
they are not or they've had problems in the past where they feel like people
9:49
don't adhere to their authoritative state or what they deem as authority so
9:52
you already know that that place is not like a days gone not all colleagues they
9:59
do really have that whole boss sub boss employee teammates where you are your
10:09
hierarchy like you can already guess in conclusion guys now note I did say I'm
10:15
not excusing all the unfair practices if as long as the company is abiding by
10:22
the CCMA rules and within your contract they are doing what they said they would
10:28
do I think most of it is stemming from us the candidates who are lying during
10:34
the interview stage and also there are some managers that know that they've
10:39
been having a hard time retaining candidates and they also lie during the
10:46
interview process and they try to seem like they're all friendly or maybe they try to be friendly but when they know and time starts they are like serious
10:55
let's let's hit you see the terms the corporate jagger let's hit the
10:59
ground running conclusion guys to avoid toxic workplaces to joining them in this
11:06
in just from the beginning be organized during your interview stage understand
11:12
why some questions are being asked and when they say please ask us questions
11:16
don't ask us stupid questions such as what time do you know of what our PTO
11:21
there are more questions that you can ask that are more important more serious
11:26
that it to help you find out more about this role and about the company why did
11:31
the plus person leave what can you do to get a promotion not just monetary was I
11:36
carry a wise if someone is in trouble or anything like that what are the
11:42
disciplinary measures number four what is the common problem you face or not
11:48
just don't just also guys don't also just focus on the negatives right you're
11:52
not trying to scare them off like this one is just a Debbie downer also the
11:57
positive right your biggest or your highest achiever in the team what
12:04
numbers are they chasing clients what type of client base do you have so guys
12:10
as much as they are interviewing you you are interviewing them remember guys you
12:14
are amazing don't let anyone tell you about us until next time
