Record Breaking Arizona Heat

Mar 10, 2026
The heat wave in Arizona in 2020 was record breaking. Phoenix Arizona experienced more days over 110 degrees, 100 degrees and 115 degrees than any other year on history. Some of the reasons for this extreme heat in Arizona is attributed to high pressure systems that blocked the subtropical moisture from creating clouds and monsoons over Arizona. This is likely caused by the urban development which makes it more difficult for the moisture to develop than in years past before all of the concrete and asphalt. Phoenix and Tucson really felt the heat in 2020! Living in Arizona is quite a unique experience because of the vastness that the state offers. From the Sonoran Desert in the south to the high country in the north all the way up towards the Four Corners east and the Grand Canyon in the west. Known as the Grand Canyon state, Arizona is diverse in many ways. The state tree is the Palo Verde, the state cactus is the Saguaro, the state bird is the Cactus wren.
