Vladimir Komarov became the first human to die during a space mission after the disastrous launch of Soyuz 1 in 1967. At the height of the Cold War space race, Soviet leadership pushed the mission forward despite engineers reportedly identifying hundreds of technical flaws in the spacecraft. Komarov and his close friend Yuri Gagarin both knew the mission was dangerously unprepared. Gagarin allegedly tried to delay the launch, but political pressure surrounding the anniversary of the Russian Revolution overruled safety concerns. Almost immediately after launch, Soyuz 1 began failing. A solar panel malfunction crippled the craft’s power supply, communications became unstable, and Komarov struggled alone in orbit trying to regain control. Against the odds, he successfully managed re-entry — only for the parachute system to fail moments before landing. The capsule crashed at full speed and exploded on impact. Before launch, Komarov reportedly requested an open-casket funeral if he died, wanting Soviet officials to witness the consequences of forcing the mission forward. His death became one of the darkest and most tragic moments of the early space race.
