0:00
hey gang Jane back with another crochet
0:02
technique tutorial today I'm going to
0:03
show you an alternative method of the
0:05
standing double crochet that you can use
0:08
when you're working with only one color
0:11
I've been making my way through
0:12
alternatives to the standard beginning
0:13
chains those awkward looking chain one
0:16
two or three stitches when starting your
0:18
rounds chain stitches serve a purpose
0:20
which is to square up your first Stitch
0:22
to the height that the row is going to
0:24
be and I've done tutorials on standing
0:27
single crochet standing double crochet
0:29
and stacked single crochet as
0:31
Alternatives my fave is the standing
0:33
double crochet but it's only used when
0:35
starting a new color or a new piece of
0:37
yarn and I got thinking what if I'm
0:39
going to continue with the same color or
0:41
want to work a solid color granny square
0:43
couldn't I find a way to do the standing
0:45
double crochet then so I started
0:47
experimenting and I've come up with an
0:49
idea that I'm going to show you today
0:50
and calling it a standing double crochet
0:52
alternative using the same color I
0:54
haven't seen anything like this out
0:55
there yet but if any of you know this
0:58
technique By Any Other Name I welcome to
1:00
let me know in the comments today I'll
1:02
take you through the step by step of
1:03
this standing double crochet alternative
1:05
method and I'll be showing you how to do
1:07
it on a regular round as well as how to
1:09
work it when doing a magic ring so let's
1:12
jump in and take a look at what this
1:14
standing double crochet looks like
1:15
compared to the standard chain three
1:17
that most patterns use at the beginning
1:19
of a double crochet round this Stitch
1:21
not only looks like the other double
1:22
crochets in the round it has a regular
1:24
Stitch top to work into unlike the chain
1:27
three which doesn't match the other
1:28
stitches and and you have to work
1:30
through the middle of the chain stitch
1:31
at its top which makes it look even more
1:34
different this one just fits in better
1:37
first let's work through this method on
1:39
a regular round with all the details of
1:40
how to hold the yarn and where to insert
1:42
the hook and then I'll go back and
1:44
explain how to work it into a magic ring
1:46
and finally at the end we'll just do a
1:48
quick recap of the Stitch without all
1:52
explanation now taking a closer look
1:55
this one is the imitation of the Landing
2:00
double crochet that we're doing so let's
2:02
go back to this round and I'm going to
2:05
show you how I made this one then I'll
2:07
go back and show you how I do it into
2:09
the magic ring so here we have a regular
2:11
first round of double crochets and I do
2:15
have this method used here so I will be
2:19
able to show you how to join that as
2:21
well it has a top just like the others
2:24
which is what I really like because you
2:26
feel like you're just joining into a
2:27
regular double crochet we do this this
2:30
by doing a regular join to end our round
2:33
so going under the two Loops of that
2:36
first double crochet yarn over pull
2:39
through and pull through the one on the
2:40
hook that's a normal slip stitch join
2:43
okay now we begin the standing double
2:45
crochet method when we're continuing
2:47
with the same color of yarn what you
2:49
want to do is pull up this Loop to about
2:53
the height of a double crochet so you
2:55
have extra Loop in here it's you're just
2:58
pulling it up that's all you're doing
3:01
hold on to it with your finger so it
3:02
doesn't move or change or you lose it go
3:06
back into the same Stitch that you
3:09
slipped into yarn over and pull up a
3:12
loop just a little Loop don't pull that
3:14
one up just leave it right next to your
3:17
work still hanging onto the original big
3:21
loop yarn over and pull through just
3:25
that one Loop that you created the first
3:27
one this one at the front of the hook
3:30
let's take a closer look at
3:33
that now I have two loops on the hook
3:36
and I can let go of that one what I want
3:39
to do here is Twist this before I do the
3:43
next yarn over and pull through I take
3:46
the hook and I twist the end towards me
3:50
and the hook part away from
3:52
me so I'm doing it clockwise I guess you
3:55
could say all the way around I used this
4:00
method when I do my Twisted Edge sticks
4:02
the Twisted cord Stitch I have a video
4:05
on that as well same idea you just
4:08
completely rotate the hook around it is
4:10
important what direction you do it in if
4:13
you're right-handed like me it's
4:14
clockwise now making sure everything
4:16
isn't too tight or too loose just nice
4:18
keep your tension you'll learn this
4:20
tension as you go yarn over and pull
4:23
through the two loops on the
4:25
hook I've created a double crochet
4:29
and it looks like a standing double
4:31
crochet because it is kind of similar to
4:34
it now again if I were to do a round of
4:37
two double crochet in each Stitch I
4:38
would yarn over the hook insert into
4:41
that same Stitch I just worked
4:43
into and complete my double crochet I
4:51
crochets so let's go back and I'm going
4:53
to show you how to do it into the magic
4:55
ring and then I can also show you how to
4:57
join it at the end of the round so magic
5:00
ring lay your yarn across your palm hold
5:03
it in place with your thumb yarn over
5:05
the first two fingers Crossing
5:08
underneath and holding that in place and
5:10
yarn over three fingers under the first
5:14
over the second pulling it through and
5:17
twisting your hook so that the loop is
5:19
Twisted on the hook itself and do a
5:22
chain one to hold it in
5:24
place there we have our magic ring and
5:26
we're ready to do this version of our
5:29
standing double crochet to begin around
5:32
I have a chain one here you don't
5:34
normally do a chain one but I need to to
5:37
hold my magic ring in
5:39
place take your hook and pull up on this
5:42
Loop the way that we did before so you
5:45
have extra space in there it's about the
5:49
height of a double crochet now holding
5:51
that in place with your finger go back
5:54
down into your ring yarn over and pull
5:57
up a loop but don't pull it to to the
5:59
height of this one just pull it right to
6:01
the ring yarn over and pull through
6:04
again just that same loop at the front
6:08
keeping this nice big one back
6:10
here now we have the two loops on the
6:13
hook keeping this one a normal height
6:16
and this one is nice and loose it
6:17
already is it is what it is now can't
6:19
change it so now we rotate the hook so
6:22
we pull the handle towards us going
6:25
clockwise and then we push the handle
6:27
away from us to get to the top again and
6:31
then we pull it back towards us to
6:33
complete the twist 360° if you're
6:36
right-handed like me you're going
6:38
clockwise now I want to make sure that
6:41
your magic ring also doesn't go all kuuy
6:43
a lot going on here yarn over and pull
6:46
through those two loops and if you feel
6:48
anything's wonky you can just pull a
6:50
little bit on that cut end just to make
6:52
sure everything is snug and there you
6:55
have what's considered a standing double
6:57
crochet worked right into a magic ring
6:59
so I would continue to work double
7:01
crochets into that ring so there's a
7:05
second one see how much they look alike
7:07
and it's so much nicer than the chain
7:09
three so I'm going to work 12 total
7:11
including this one and then I'll show
7:13
you how to join so before I do that
7:16
let's use our stitch marker so that we
7:18
can find this Stitch when we come back
7:19
to it cuz you have to get used to what
7:21
the tops look like this is our regular
7:23
double crochet here so I want the top of
7:28
that Twisted one it's supposed to look
7:30
just like this so you go in this one
7:32
obviously is the front the back is a
7:36
down behind it just pull it out stretch
7:40
it out we only have two stitches on here
7:42
so everything's kind of jamming in but
7:44
that's the front and that's the back
7:47
there's the Stitch that we're going to
7:49
work into when we come back around I'm
7:51
going to put my stitch marker in there
7:55
so that I can find it when I get back
7:57
around to the front there we go
8:01
there so let's make sure that you don't
8:03
work too tightly cuz it's really hard to
8:05
find if you're a tight crocheter go
8:07
ahead and work 12 total and I'll meet
8:09
you back here and we will join this
8:11
round so here we are with 12 we counted
8:16
them count them again I like to count
8:18
the v's 1 2 3 4 five 6 7 8 9 10 11 and
8:27
that 12th one should be where your
8:30
is so we're going to cinch up our magic
8:32
ring holding it in place at the last
8:34
Stitch and pulling on the cut end cinch
8:37
it right up now we're ready to join our
8:39
round and we want to go right into this
8:41
Stitch where the stitch marker is so see
8:43
how it shows us what the Stitch looks
8:46
like so that's where we want to put our
8:50
hook and I'm going to take out the
8:52
stitch marker cuz there's a lot going on
8:57
Stitch and now all we want to do is slip
9:00
stitch to join so yarn over your hook
9:03
pull it through the Stitch and pull it
9:05
through the one on the hook and now
9:08
you've joined your first round and right
9:11
there is your standing double crochet
9:15
version of a beginning round now I'm
9:18
here to encourage you to experiment as
9:20
well and you may notice in this
9:22
particular one there's a little crossbar
9:24
on the Stitch here you could try working
9:26
under that loop as well when you're slip
9:28
stitching it and join it but I find it
9:30
leaves a gap for me if I do that so if
9:32
you look at these other examples the
9:34
crossbar is not as loose here and it
9:36
seems to resemble the other stitches
9:38
much better so it just takes some
9:40
practice with this Stitch and getting
9:41
your tension right and experimenting to
9:43
find what works best for you I have a
9:46
tutorial on the actual standing double
9:48
crochets usually a standing double
9:49
crochet is used when you're joining a
9:51
new color so this is a version you use
9:53
when you're continuing with the same
9:55
color now that I've explained the entire
9:57
process let's do a quick recap to of the
10:00
actual Stitch we start by doing a slip
10:02
stitch to join our round which we have
10:04
already done now what I want to do is
10:06
pull up the loop so it's about the
10:09
height of a double crochet not too much
10:12
not too little this will come with
10:13
practice holding onto with my finger on
10:16
my right hand my hook hand I go back
10:19
into the same Stitch and pull up a loop
10:23
but I do not pull that one up I leave it
10:25
right next to the work yarn over and
10:29
pull through that loop again now I have
10:32
two loops on the hook I'm going to take
10:35
my hook and I'm going to rotate it
10:37
clockwise so the hook goes away from me
10:40
and the handle towards me and then the
10:43
handle goes away from me and the hook
10:46
me now you have it twisted on the
10:50
hook yarn over I'm still holding it in
10:53
place with this finger and thumb here
10:55
yarn over the hook and pull through
10:57
those two loops and there is the
11:00
imitation of your standing double
11:02
crochet you'll want to practice your
11:05
tension with that because you don't want
11:06
it to be too tight or it will pull down
11:09
on your work and if it's too loose it's
11:12
going to go kind of wonky with the the
11:14
loops that are here so don't get
11:16
discouraged with that one it does take a
11:18
little bit of practice to get that one
11:20
going but it is really beautiful Stitch
11:22
once you figure it out now you have
11:23
another technique in your crochet tool
11:25
kit which gives you more options and the
11:27
more choices you have the more you can
11:29
create the look you want in your crochet
11:31
projects this one is great if you're
11:33
doing solid squares or you're continuing
11:35
with the same color if you enjoyed this
11:38
tutorial please give it a thumbs up and
