Can I Guess the ETHNICITY of a Random Person?

Today I'm playing a game called Ethnoguessr, where you are given two faces and you have to try and work out which ethnic group they originate from

So I have a map in front of me and basically I would just click where I think these guys are from

There are 10 rounds to go through, this is round 1, we have a male and female average face from that ethnic group

Now a lot of people don't play this game because they are worried about offending someone

so let me just say off the bat, I apologise in advance if I do offend anybody, it is of course not my intention

I'm definitely not going to be an expert at this. I'm probably going to get some terrible guesses, but it'll just be quite interesting and it's different, isn't it, too

So I'm quite excited about playing this. Now, I'm just going to get straight into round one

And obviously, these guys are from somewhere in Asia and there's a few possible places

Like, I'm thinking maybe they could be Vietnamese, maybe a little bit of Cambodia

Areas of China, I don't think are impossible, but I think these guys are Japanese

Now, I may be totally off, but that's kind of what I'm going with. I am going to hedge my bets and head a little bit towards Korea and China, just in case

But I think, you know, looking at this man in particular, he looks Japanese, right

Am I going to get this totally wrong? I mean, yeah, maybe I am

But we're going to give it a go and hope for the best. Confirm guess. That's good

Nice. Okay. I actually have a... I got a perfect score there, I think

i think five thousand is the best you can get because i'm like pretty close to the the marker

point now if i had gone in the koreas i would have actually been okay there and also some of china

too and then we've got these kind of little islands as well but that's a nice start apparently

this ethnic group is called koshu variant of the manchu korean type named after the old japanese

koshu domain once common in chinese korean aristocracy today mainly found in japan all

Ah, here we go. It's definitely quite a bit different. We've got a lovely little moustache, and immediately off the bat

I'm assuming this has got to be over in this sort of area

Like, it'd be fair to say that they could be from India, right? Now, as well as India, there's also places like Bangladesh, Pakistan

I suppose, could you head over to somewhere like Saudi Arabia? I honestly can't really think what the average Saudi Arabian would look like

but I think I'm fine kind of going back to India on this one

Am I? Am I going to be totally off here? I don't think so. Yeah, I think I'm fine going kind of India

Maybe if I click on this side, just in case we also are maybe Pakistan area

Oh, maybe not. Maybe I feel quite happy with that guess and I'd rather go in the middle of India

and then it does hedge my bets on either side, you know, just in case it is over towards Bangladesh

Do you think that's fine? I suppose we could go south towards Sri Lanka, but I think they look more Indian than Sri Lankan. Yeah, we'll go

We'll stick basically in the middle of India, right? Should I go with that

Let's confirm the guess. Hopefully we're not too far. I should have gone south. Okay

It was India, but it was sort of this specific region of the south of India

Indid subtype with a position intermediate between North Indid and Grass Hill Indid mainly found in the plains of Malabar

Mmm, right. I mean, it's not too bad for the second one. Obviously, I did get the country correct

I wish I'd actually gone a bit south, but I said no now it won't be south. It's quite a specific region

This I thought it would maybe spread a little bit further. Okay, so far though, we're still doing quite nicely

So let's take a look at our next one. Oh Okay, so these guys are sort of more Caucasian looking, right

But they've still got sort of much darker skin than me now This is ethnic groups and where they originate from as well

So I don't necessarily know like how many hundreds or thousands of years we actually are going back

But I mean, these guys to me, this is a weird one

I would assume it's somewhere in Europe, right? Because originally I was thinking kind of Italian maybe

Like I feel like he looks Italian, but I'm not sure if she looks Italian

And I feel like in terms of an ethnic group, are we going back far enough if I'm clicking Italy

I don't know. Where else could we go? Like, I almost feel like we could head over to Georgia and Armenia

but I don't know really what I'm basing that on. But I mean, maybe they could look kind of Syrian or Iraqi

Yeah, when we look at the lady in particular, I don't think that's the craziest shout in the world

I don't know why I've homed in on Georgia, but I think I might go for it

Do I click it? Hmm, could they be like Greek maybe? Do you think I should be back in Europe

Is this silly? They've both got dark hair as well. Hmm. I think I kinda wanna hedge my bets here right Is there anywhere else they could be Hmm I mean it not the most insane thing in the world to think of them like you know around Mexico or something but nah we going

Georgia-Armenian. I don't really know why, but it seems like one-on-one of homings on, so let's go

for it. Here we go. Okay, okay. Did I get a perfect score again? 5,000? Whoa. Wait, I think I actually

smashed it this is what the actual location's been marked as am i a genius so if i had gone italy i

still would have been okay because it does still spread in that region same with greece i'm really

glad that i did not go with mexico i talked myself out of that one but even syria has a big hot spot

as well and i did mention syria i did well there so this ethnic group is called pontid and it's an

an East Mediterranean type, sometimes associated with ancient Scythians, Kurgans, and other Steppe

peoples, common in the Balkans, especially Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Western Turkey, Ukraine

Southern Russia, Azerbaijan, Northwestern Iran, etc, etc. Basically, a lot of Eastern Europe

but generally sort of Western Asia. I actually smashed that one. I'm like weirdly close. I don't

know where I even got that from, but it's probably going to be all downhill from here as we move on

to round number four oh right okay so obviously a much much darker skin so off the bat here you

would be thinking somewhere in africa but i suppose you could also have some areas of you

know maybe brazil maybe caribbean but i i don't know if if can you say an ethnic group originated

in the caribbean i honestly don't quite know because i know that a lot of people in the

the Caribbean came from Africa originally, but then also a lot of people came from South America too

There is also possibly Papua New Guinea that these guys could be from

I believe stereotypically people have pretty dark skin in Papua New Guinea

I don't think they look Aborigine, but maybe they do. So these pictures are generated by combining like a lot of different photographs

and we can kind of see the girl's got neckwear around her, which I'm thinking is maybe like African tribal stuff

So I think I am gonna go in africa, but obviously africa's ginormous and very ethnically diverse

So how do I narrow it down a little bit more? part of me is wondering about maybe Botswana

Mozambique sort of region, but then i'm also thinking over in western africa

I think i'm just guessing if i'm trying to visualize what people from these regions look like because I don't really know

I feel like I kind of know what a lot of kenyan people maybe look like

and I don't think that's what these guys look like. Same with Ethiopia. Where do I go then

Hmm. I think I'm gonna go kind of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana. I don't know why

It's just the sort of feeling I'm getting. Should we go for that? Maybe I'll move it over a little bit

and let's confirm the guess. No, I got this one wrong. It was actually sort of this region

between Sudan and Ethiopia and I discounted Ethiopia. I was like, nah

So that's a pretty bad score because even though I did get the continent correct

I'm 3,000 kilometers away because Africa is very large. Pre-Nilotid is the name, apparently

Ancient type with proto-Nilotid traits today are still found in the border region of Sudan and Ethiopia

A link to early Ethiopids is possible. Many of these tribes have suffered war and displacement

and are now dispersed all over the world. Well, that is very sad. So ancient tribes that are still existing in low numbers, apparently

I'm sad about that one. And I had such a good one with my Georgia

All right, next face. Let's go. Ooh, so, hmm, I don't know, you know

I'm actually a little bit scared on this one that it might be over here, but I don't think so

He kind of looks like he could be maybe Mexican. I think I'm gonna shy away

Like, I'm wondering about Egyptian. Is that, is that wild? Is that crazy

Is that a wild suggestion? We could have Egyptian, but then, I mean

It's not too far from Israeli. Yeah, Jordan. I think they're Middle Eastern is what I'm going to say

And obviously that does leave quite a few regions. They do have quite light skin

We may be back towards Europe. But I suppose I'm quite northerly there

I am getting close to Europe. I'm in the Mediterranean. I might just stop trying to overthink it and just click it

I'm going to go for it. Confirm guess. I wish I'd gone a little bit more north

It's actually not that bad a score. They've put the central point at Cyprus

and I'm just on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea. If only I had clicked a bit more in the sort of central Middle East

I would have got a better score. But apparently generally speaking this is kind of a Turkish ethnic group So the group is called Anatolid probably the result of an Armenian influx into Mediterranean population

Anatolids are the dominant element in Turkey today, but may also be found in a few other spots

Well, it's not bad. It's, you know, that's quite close when you zoom out

Actually, I think that's quite a nice score. I wish that I had gone in Turkey. I could have seen myself doing that

But going down in Cairo, not too bad. not far away. Zoom out, look at that. That's a beautiful score. 3,000 ever possible, 5,000. I'm

taking it. Ooh, what? This is a weird one where nothing's kind of immediately coming to me. I have

no idea where to go. I mean, this guy's skin isn't that dissimilar to mine. So would that put us

towards kind of Scandinavia? Nah, I don't think they look Scandinavian. They've both got dark

black hair as well. This lady kind of has a bit more of an Eastern European look, but I don't feel

like that continues with him. I'm wondering if it's something like maybe around Kyrgyzstan

Kazakhstan, Russian, you know, like just this random region of Russia, maybe Romanian. I actually

don't know. See, there's so many different like ethnic groups that are overlapping regions. So it

doesn't necessarily matter if I was to click somewhere that I've previously clicked because

the world's diverse and people have mingled, you know, people have traveled, they've mingled

They diddled this is a weird one. She definitely looks like a different ethnic group to him

That's the trouble they're kind of their skin tones aren't really that similar She's definitely got a little bit more of that olive skin whereas he's kind of more pale

Oh, I do not know where to go. I might be throwing it away on this one

I guess at least we know it's probably not anywhere in africa It's probably not anywhere in oceania or asia and it's probably not anywhere in the americas

So I surely am not too far away if I was to go, you know up here

technically in russia but sort of towards ukraine because i think it might be somewhere like romania

but i just don't want to be too far away i'm gonna just chuck this one out there and i'm really not

sure about it oh i should have gone with ukraine okay pre-slavic ah ancient central european element

associated with the pre-slavic people common in poles and west ukrainians so i should have committed

a bit more to ukraine but i was kind of hedging my bets in case it was somewhere like kazakhstan

That's still actually a pretty great score though. Whoa, it's actually a really good score

4,998 out of a possible 5,000. Even though I'm not in the reds, I am close to the start of the red

For my own satisfaction though, I do wish I had just committed to Ukraine. That's another really nice score again actually

Yeah, I think we've done nicely there. So let's just move on to the next one. Okay, this is round 7 of 10

Overall, we have an average score of 3,500. So I let myself down on the last round where we had people with particularly dark skin

So hopefully I can redeem that now and I'm not sure I can as I said our options here are a lot of Africa

Possibly somewhere around, you know, Polynesia Papua New Guinea, but then there's even a possibility of South America somewhere

Oh, no, so this lady's got kind of like quite afro hair, right

So I think I do go in Africa, but I do not know where

I feel like they've both got kind of matching tops on, which is interesting as well

Like you can see they've both got this sort of shade of purple, which I'm trying to work out why that would be

because we haven't really seen that with any of the other male and female comparisons, whereas these guys are in like what's effectively maybe a uniform

and I'm trying to work out what to do with that information. I don't really know where to go here, and I think I'm gonna go in Guinea

Yeah, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone. So we're over in Western Africa. Do you think that's a nice place to go? I think it is

Hopefully we'll do okay. Let's see. It's a terrible, terrible place to go

Yeah, I mentioned Papua New Guinea and Polynesia, but I did not commit to it and I have just gotten a zero round

I'm 18,000 kilometers away. So sad. I went in Guinea and it was actually Papua New Guinea

However, I believe the horrible colonial white people they named this region Papua New Guinea because the people that they found there

Reminded them of the people that they found in Guinea I think that makes me also look like a terrible person and perhaps I should not have actually mentioned that at all

But their names are linked together. I feel kind of terrible even mentioning that but it is still a fact, right

We should probably just move on from that round and now Ooh okay So these guys are looking I would assume Asian but not kind of China Japanese Korea Asian more like deep sort of landlocked regions of Asia You know I was thinking kind of Mongolian Kazakhstan region but suddenly I thinking do I need to be in sort of Mexico Guatemala territory

Like, do they look maybe Aztec, potentially? Yeah, I think I'm going sort of bottom of Mexico, and I'm a bit scared about it, because as I said, it might be back where I'm thinking it was originally, over in this kind of region

Hmm, we've got to commit to it, right? I'm going for it. Oh, phew, phew, phew

Okay, so it's actually not an amazing score. I am kind of far away there

but I am very glad that I did not go with where I was originally thinking

This is North Anid, the most important and numerous Anid subvariety adapted to the high altitudes of the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andes

the dominant element in the ancient Inca Empire. Yeah, Inca is actually what I meant

I said Aztec, but I was thinking Inca. Oh, God, it's happening. I'm offending people

Yeah, it's not a great score, that one, but I'm still kind of happy with it because at least we sort of were on the right track

I should have gone further down. Okay, let's go to our penultimate round. Okay, please, come on

So far, we have not really done a great job identifying where the black people in this game

have come from. Can we redeem that today? It's a weird game, you know, I can see why people didn't

want to record it because you feel like you're just being really offensive, even though you're

literally just playing a game. Okay, where do we go this time? Once again, they're kind of in

similar looking outfits, right? Oh god, I don't know where to go. So this pair have lighter skin

than the previous round, which was over in Papua New Guinea. I don't think they look like they're

from South America or anywhere, so I think we are going back to Africa. So that other round

that was Ethiopia. I can't actually remember what they looked like, so I'm trying to think how

similar they are. I don't think they are. I think these two have got lighter skin. I'm kind of

thinking around sort of Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania. I don't really know why. Yeah, I suppose they

could look Kenyan, maybe? Do you think? Yeah, let's go towards Kenya and let's confirm our guess

Damn, okay. So, continent's correct, but not particularly close. It was over in Western Africa

I would have been safe clicking anywhere around here. I would have gotten a great score, so that's

annoying. Sudano-Guinnesid. Transitional type between Sudanid and Guinnessid, common in West Africa. Okay, not an amazing score. My average is starting to fall down after having a good couple

of rounds, so hopefully, as we move into this final phase, we will end on a good score, and let's see

ooh, that's a really interesting one, that could be Aboriginal down in Australia, maybe, where else

could it be, could we be sort of like, Inuit, up in sort of North Canada, oh, those areas are so far

away from each other, I'm about to get a terrible, terrible score to end this video on, I am confused

by this one, I actually don't know, like, potentially, we might be back in Africa again, this is such a

wide variety of places. They have such dominant features. Like, their- their brows are so strong

Oh, God. I don't know where to go. Does it look cold in the background? It doesn't really look

particularly snowy, does it? I think we're going Aborigine. Oh, Polynesian. Yeah? I don't know

What if it's somewhere like Bolivia? Nah, no. Yeah? No, no. Okay. Yeah, we're gonna- we're gonna go

I have no idea. Yeah, I think we're going Aborigine. So I guess we go in Australia

Do I commit to this? Yeah, no, maybe. Yeah, we could go Aborigine or we could go Maori in New Zealand

I can't really get a good sort of visual on either in my head

I guess I'm going Australia, but I do not know. I'm literally thinking I could be so, so far away here

The more I look at them, the more I'm thinking maybe I need to go back to somewhere like India

or that kind of region, at least. Like, this guy, I guess, could look Indian, but the lady does look more aborigine-y, or at least in my head, or whatever I'm depicting that as

Australian subtype with proto-caucasian form features associated with the people of the Murray Basin of southeastern Australia

Originally the most numerous Australian type, European settlers colonised the fertile lands of the southeast first and pushed back the natives

Today almost extinct in pure form, many mixed individuals still remain. That's depressing, but we did get a bullseye to finish off. That's a perfect score

So overall we actually had three perfect rounds, which I think is quite good, but I did have a few terrible rounds as well

But it was generally Africa where I let myself down because it's a very diverse country

and obviously something that I do not know enough about. Anyway, hopefully you enjoyed this
