In a profile with Them, Airyn discussed her identity, sharing how Black women have deeply influenced her journey. Earlier this year, tabloids misgendered and mischaracterized Airyn after publishing paparazzi photos, prompting her decision to speak out. “I’d want to hopefully be an inspiration for at least one other person like me who is Black, who is queer, who’s not a size extra small,” she said.
