The Most Controversial Disney Live-Action Remakes

While some live-action adaptations became huge box-office successes, others left fans feeling like the animated versions were still the better choice. 2019’s ‘Dumbo’ faced criticism for expanding the short animated favorite into a much bigger story. Despite its star-studded cast, including Michael Keaton, Colin Farrell and Danny DeVito, some fans felt Tim Burton’s darker version lost the heart of the 1941 original. More recently, 2025’s ‘Snow White’, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, faced backlash over creative choices, including Disney’s decision to portray the seven dwarfs using CGI. During an interview with podcaster Marc Maron, ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Peter Dinklage also criticized the remake, calling the approach “backwards” and arguing that it reinforced outdated stereotypes.
