Legendary Musicians Who 'Retired' Multiple Times
Jul 13, 2026
Nothing lasts forever in the world of rock ‘n’ roll, especially when it comes to saying goodbye. Plenty of bands and artists have announced their final tours, only to find themselves back on stage just a few years later.
Ozzy Osbourne famously announced his retirement in 1992 with the appropriately titled “No More Tours” run. But after stepping away from the road, he quickly realized he wasn’t ready to leave music behind. “Retirement sucked,” he later admitted, and by 1995 he was back on the road to support his new album ‘Ozzmosis,’ proving his farewell was nothing more than a temporary hiatus.
Elton John also struggled to stay away from performing. During a 1977 show at Wembley Arena, he told fans it would be his final gig, saying the decision to leave touring behind had been painful. However, his retirement lasted barely a year. By 1979, he was performing again, starting a new run of shows that even took him behind the Iron Curtain to the Soviet Union.
