Nebraska football is searching for a new head coach and Matt Campbell is the top target according to some reports. Here are a few reasons why he would be a perfect fit for the Huskers. Some of the questions raised about Campbell are addressed such as his record and his ability to recruit. If he is the top target for Trev Alberts, here's why he would be a perfect fit. Hey, Husker fans. It's Chris Peterson from Husker Big Red.com and another episode here
0:07
at the Husker Big Red YouTube channel. And today I'm going to tell you why I think Nebraska
0:12
needs to hire Matt Campbell as its next head coach. As we saw this week, or if some of
0:17
you may have seen Lars Anderson put out a tweet that, you know, he was expecting, you
0:21
know, Matt Campbell to be the primary target of Trev Alberts. And, you know, Lars said
0:26
he's not like a breaking news guy, but he was right about Fred Hoiberg. He was right
0:30
about Trev Alberts, and he was right about Scott Frost. So this seems like a pretty good
0:34
person to trust. And Matt Campbell makes a lot of sense. If you've seen any of our recent
0:40
streams or if you've read any of my content at Husker Big Red.com, you'll know that I'm
0:45
in love with Matt Campbell. I think he would be a perfect fit for Nebraska. I think he's
0:48
done a really good job at Ames, Iowa. You know, with Iowa State, he did a good job at
0:53
Toledo. He's got, you know, some really good recruiting connections, and he's been a highly
0:58
sought after coach. It's kind of surprising that he's still in Ames right now. You know
1:05
he was thought to be a candidate for the Notre Dame job. Teams have had interest in him
1:10
you know, NFL teams. So, you know, I'm surprised that he's still there, but I think that he
1:14
would be a great fit for Nebraska. And here's, you know, just a few reasons why. Number one
1:19
is he's won a lot of big games. I know a lot of Nebraska fans are fixated on his record
1:24
of, you know, 10 and 17 or whatever it is. You know, I don't know if that includes the
1:27
one over Iowa, you know, last weekend or not in his last 17 games. Iowa State did go seven
1:33
and six last year, but basically every team they beat was ranked in the top 25 except
1:38
for West Virginia. And one of the teams that they lost to that wasn't ranked was Baylor
1:43
the eventual Big 12 champion. And every single one of those losses was by a single possession
1:48
So, you know, I know the close doesn't count, but they still got to a bowl game. And in
1:53
the previous four years prior to that, Iowa State has nine victories. Matt Campbell has
1:57
nine victories over teams ranked in the top 25, two over Oklahoma, two over Texas. They
2:03
beat Oregon, beat Oklahoma State, beat TCU. So Matt Campbell has proven that he can beat
2:08
really good teams. And in case anybody hasn't noticed, it's been since 2016 since Nebraska
2:15
beat a ranked team. I believe it's been 17 losses in a row. So Matt Campbell's the kind
2:20
of guy who can beat elite teams without elite talent. He hasn't looking back at his recruiting
2:23
classes. He hasn't had a single top 25 recruiting class at Iowa State. So he's still finding
2:29
a way to get the most out of his talent. And I think that that shows what kind of a coach
2:32
he is. Now we all know that this head coach needs to do really well on the recruiting
2:38
trail and Nebraska in some ways will always partially recruit itself. Now there are some
2:43
disadvantages. You know, Omaha is kind of the biggest metro area, you know, close to
2:47
it. And while there are some really good players there, it's not enough to sustain a roster
2:51
So Nebraska has always had to find a national type of recruiting perspective out there
2:56
So whether that be, you know, California, Texas, Florida, those have all been different
3:00
areas that Nebraska needs to recover. I think they need to recruit. I think that Ohio is
3:05
right in that mix. You know, the Huskers need to go after Ohio, especially being in the
3:09
Big Ten. And Matt Campbell would be a great ticket to there. You know, he had success
3:13
at Toledo. He's gotten players out of there at Iowa State. And I think with the brand
3:17
at Nebraska and getting Nebraska winning again, you know, the NIL is going to be strong at
3:21
Nebraska. The fan base is there, the atmosphere. I mean, the atmosphere was electric for the
3:25
Georgia Southern game, even though the Huskers put on one of their worst performances, especially
3:30
defensively that they've ever had. So, you know, the crowd was in it from the beginning
3:34
to end. So once this team gets a winner, I think it's going to be, you know, sort of
3:38
a destination place, especially with the 12 team playoff. And if you get a legit coach
3:42
in here, you know, Nebraska is going to be in contention for that playoff. I'm not saying
3:46
every year, but it's not going to be like unattainable as the 14 playoff scenes right
3:51
now for Nebraska. So I think that's a good reason to get Matt Campbell in here. And another
3:56
thing about, you know, his recruiting is, you know, Iowa State is Iowa State. It's not
4:00
Nebraska. I know that, you know, Iowa State's had a strong program under Campbell. They just gave him a contract, but I believe that he would be able to, you know, recruit top
4:09
25 classes at Nebraska. And unlike Scott Frost, his evaluation skills are really good. If
4:14
you look at a lot of elite players, you know, Iowa State has been one of the first schools
4:18
to offer them. They obviously haven't been able to pull them, you know, because it's Iowa State and there's only so much you can do there, but, you know, he does a really
4:24
good job recruiting and Nebraska, you know, has generally, even with the struggles under
4:29
Scott Frost has recruited pretty well. It's had some of the best talent in the Big Ten
4:33
West over these past few years. They just need to get a coach who's actually going to
4:36
get the most out of that talent. And I think Matt Campbell can do that. Another reason
4:41
that Nebraska fans would really love this guy, you know, he is invested in the defensive
4:46
side of the ball and, you know, he knows how to run the rock too. He knows how to run the
4:50
damn ball. And, you know, I think we've seen that, you know, we had Breece Hall, you know
4:54
was a big, was a big time player for Iowa State over the last few years. And, you know
4:58
they really leaned heavily on him and the defense, you know, and they developed guys
5:02
you know, gotten them to the next level. And those are all things that I think they're going to be able to sell to recruits. And Matt Campbell, again, you know, with his ability to identify
5:10
players, he has done really well recruiting quarterbacks. JJ Cole is committed to Iowa
5:15
State in the 2023 class, and he's a high ranking four star that performed really well at the Elite
5:20
11. So, you know, he also had Brock Purdy, who was a four-year starter for him and played
5:27
really well, won a lot of games. So, you know, I think there's a lot of fits in terms of, you
5:31
know, what Nebraska needs. They need to do a better job on the recruiting trail of actually
5:35
you know, evaluating and developing recruits. Well, Matt Campbell can do that. They need to
5:39
be able to beat teams that, frankly, are more talented than them. And Matt Campbell has proven
5:44
that he can do that. It's not just a fluke. I mean, nine ranked teams over a five-year span
5:49
And, you know, another thing is I think Matt Campbell's available. He was interested, it was reported in the Notre Dame job, despite Marcus Freeman's struggles. I don't think that's
5:57
coming open anytime soon. I don't think the Ohio State job is coming open anytime soon
6:01
And he feels like a Midwest guy. It seems like he's hit his ceiling at Iowa State. And I think
6:06
Nebraska could pay him Elite money. And I think he could get Nebraska playing closer to an Elite
6:11
level of football. I don't think this program's ever going to be what it was in the 90s, but
6:15
I think if you get the right coach, I think that they can own the Big Ten West for sure. And I
6:20
think that Matt Campbell is that guy. And that's why I think that he should be the next, should be
6:25
the hire of Trev Alberts. I hope that he is. I hope that Lars Anderson is correct. And if you
