Hey, Oscar fans. Welcome back to the Husker Big Red YouTube channel. I'm Chris Peterson, and joining me as always is my co-host, Janie Gillette. And we're back on a Monday morning, and it is officially the offseason for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Unfortunately, after their loss last Friday, which seems like months ago, it seems like a long time ago. But at any rate, we're sure to break it down. Danny, how are you feeling on this Monday morning, buddy? It does seem like months ago, doesn't it? Yet it was only three days ago
0:30
It just, that just tells me that next August is going to feel like five years ago, or five years from now
0:37
And so it's going to be a long offseason, but I'm excited for the off season
0:43
You know, I love recruiting. And, you know, I want to see what this program does to improve
0:48
And I know we're going to get to this a little bit later, but the basketball team will certainly keep me busy as I wait for at the very least the spring game in April
1:00
Yeah, the basketball team, 7 and 0 with a win yesterday over Cal State Fullerton
1:04
So they're cruising right along. You know, they've got a big, big matchup coming up this weekend
1:10
So we'll talk kind of more about that. But, yeah, it's, you know, we're back in the offseason here
1:16
It's going to be Matt Ruhl's full kind of offseason. His first full offseason is the head coach, his first full, you know, kind of recruiting cycle
1:23
You know, is this 2023 class, that's going to be, 24 class, excuse me
1:27
That's going to be signed next month. So a lot to kind of talk about there
1:31
But first I just wanted to look back on, you know, the first season of Matt Rule. And I wrote, you know, if you haven't checked it out, check out Husker Big Red.com
1:39
I have five things we learned from Matt Rule's first season. And I think that there was a lot of good lessons
1:45
Obviously, there are some things that need to improve upon. I try to take a level-headed approach, take a couple days after the Iowa game, to look back at the season as a whole
1:53
So doing that, and then we've had some time to truly reflect, what's your letter grade, you know, for Matt
1:59
first season on the job. I'll give him a C for his first season because, like you said, there were a lot of good things
2:06
I thought that the defensive play, I know that a lot of it was Tony White, but that also
2:11
falls under the rule umbrella. I thought the defense improved. I think the quality of players that were bringing into the program improved
2:21
And, you know, I also think, you know, we were able to kind of see the blueprint of where
2:29
this program is trying to go. And that's not always been the case with previous coaching staffs
2:33
And so I think that's noteworthy as well. You know, I do think, you know, obviously in terms
2:39
of game management, there's major question marks there in terms of clock management. And, you know
2:47
also, and this is going to be a big one for me, I'm not sure about you, but transfer portal evaluations
2:53
because obviously, you know, we're not going to belabor the point, but they didn't do so well with the
2:58
Jeff Sims evaluation and, you know, quite honestly, this offseason is a chance for them to
3:04
write the ship in that regard. So there was a lot of good things. There's a lot of things that
3:08
still need to be, you know, worked out, but at least there's a blueprint for success, in my opinion
3:15
And it seems to be a very focused direction that involves, you know, good defensive play
3:21
as well as, you know, trying to, you know, remain competitive in, you know
3:28
in these types of games? Yeah, I think a C is fair
3:34
I would give them a C on this first season. You know, they won one more game than they did last year
3:39
So there was some improvement. I think, you know, obviously the four-game losing streak to end the season wasn't great
3:45
And, you know, that's going to leave a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths. And it really makes next season really pivotal because instead of, you know, kind of having that momentum going into next year
3:54
you really, next year is really a make or break year, I think, in the mat rule
3:58
you know, coaching area. And I, which I think you look at this schedule, the more I look at the schedule
4:06
the more I look at this team, if they just get a quality quarterback, like this team can
4:10
really, I think, kind of break out next season. I know that, you know, it's going to be hard
4:15
People probably roll their eyes, you know, how many times have we said that before. But, I mean, I think like the first four or five games next year are all at home
4:21
I mean, the, the toughest home game are UCLA in Wisconsin. I mean, so like every home, all seven home games next year are very winnable with a
4:32
with a legitimate quarterback. And then your road games are, you know, Iowa, Ohio State, and you assume those are all going
4:38
to be really tough. So you're probably not going to win more than nine games. But I think every other game on that schedule is very winnable
4:45
So, you know, this is a great chance, I think, to get eight or nine wins. And I don't know
4:49
I mean, Sean Callahan in the, you know, in his report today, he said that Nash Hutchmakers
4:54
coming back along with with Ty Robinson. That would be absolutely massive
5:00
I mean, if you get those two guys back, yeah, and then, you know, he made a great point
5:05
with Tommy Hill. I mean, Tommy Hill had a better, he had, he led the Big Ten and past breakups with 12
5:11
and he had four interceptions all in Big Ten play. So, I mean, he is probably going to be, you know, he probably should be like a third
5:17
team all big ten quarterback. So you've got him back. Isaac Gifford is a guy that's up in the air, you know, I'm not sure if he's going to
5:24
return or not. I would like it. I think he would be a big guy coming back. But obviously they're
5:29
getting, you know, most of these defensive players back. And they're getting, you know, you've got
5:34
Prinswell Yuma-Malian and Cameron Leonard, who I think next year are going to be like big-time players
5:39
You've got James Williams and Kai Wallen that didn't redshirt this, who contributed this year
5:45
But they saved their redshirt. So, I mean, you look at those, all four of those rushing past
5:50
rushers, you know, with Nash and with Ty Robinson inside. I mean, the defensive line is going to be really good next year
5:58
Obviously, you know, I think that Reimer is a senior. I'm not 100% sure, you know, Heinrich, I believe is too
6:04
So there's going to be some turnover there. But I think that there's a lot of reasons to be excited about this defense
6:10
And then it's just a matter of, you know, offensively, what can these guys kind of get done
6:15
And I look at this team. And I think they do need some transfer portal help at quarterback
6:20
I think they need transfer portal help at wide receiver. and potentially offensive line
6:26
and then they can kind of go from there. But if they can put together a competent offense
6:30
that cannot lead the nation in turnovers, because if they're, you know
6:35
they average 2.6 turnovers a game. If they averaged 1.5, they probably win eight games this year
6:40
I mean, legitimately. That's really, I mean, if they just solved the turnover issue
6:44
this team wins eight games in 2022, or 2023. Excuse me. No, and I think on the offensive side of the football
6:51
you saw a lot of growth this year. Matt Rule talked about development in his introductory press conference last year
6:57
And, you know, we saw the development of a lot of players on the offensive side of the football. You know, Emmett Johnson
7:02
You know, Jaden Doss really kind of, you know, emerged a little bit
7:08
Jalen Lloyd, Malachi Coleman. And I think all these guys are going to be big-time players next season with the, with a competent quarterback
7:17
And that's also something that, in my opinion, you can sell to a potential transporter quarterback
7:22
Yes, they're only freshmen, but they are big-time playmakers. And, you know, you kind of saw, you know, what they were able to do with Heinrich Harburg
7:32
and, you know, the carousel of quarterbacks that we had. Now I expect them to take another leap and really shine next season
7:42
And then what do good programs do? They build depth. You know, players like Jacori Barney, you know, Isaiah McMorris, you know, David Hall
7:52
they're all coming in next year too. So this wide receiver position is going to be replenished in my opinion pretty quickly Yeah I like the receiver position Jalen Lloyd was one of just two players in the Big Ten Him and Marvin Harrison Jr was one of two players with three touchdown receptions of over 55 yards
8:11
Not bad company. Yeah, not bad company to keep for a freshman that basically didn't even have an offer before Matt Ruhle got here
8:19
So let's look back and, you know, people kind of questioning some of the offers that Matt Ruhl made
8:23
Well, I think he knows what he's doing. But, yeah, so, I mean, you got Jalen Lloyd
8:27
who I think has a lot of potential, and really I think he could be a dangerous slot receiver
8:33
And for kind of taking over for Billy Camp, I think Malachi Coleman's going to be ready for a starting role
8:38
I just would like to see one other veteran on the other side. And, you know, if Marcus Washington can get his waiver for this year
8:44
which he's going to try to, I don't think he's going to be successful to get another injury waiver
8:48
If he could come back, like, I'd be fine with that. I just wanted to get one, like, one veteran guy that can kind of count on
8:54
and kind of help show these guys the ropes a little bit more. But yeah, there's a lot to be excited about in the receiver room
9:01
And then you, you know, bringing Carter Nelson, I'm not sure what his role is going to be
9:05
I think he's going to have a role next year. I think it's going to take some time and adjusting, you know, coming from eight-man football
9:10
and trying to figure out what the best role is for him. So, you know, it's, I would, I think that this is going to be a really good recruiting class
9:17
But I would caution. I don't think that there's going to be, you know, guys just don't walk in and play a ton in the big 10, you know, any more as freshmen
9:24
Now, they can. And I do think Nebraska has some guys that. But I don't know that there's going to be anyone that's going to, you know, be an impact player from this class
9:32
And I think part of that is because this team actually has, you know, defensively, they've got a lot of depth
9:37
I mean, they've got a lot of people coming back. Offensively, you know, maybe, maybe Grant Bricks, if he signs, you know, he might, he's one that could get into the mix
9:47
You know, Carter Nelson, I'm sure they'll find a way to get him some touches next year
9:51
You know, Preston, Tauma is a guy that could potentially, you know, if Bryce Benhard doesn't come back, he could potentially be in the mix
9:57
but you know, you definitely at least want to have some quality guy, you know, wouldn't
10:02
I would like to see them add, you know, like if Ben Hurd leaves, especially, I would like to see
10:05
them add, you know, a tackle or two to make sure that you at least, you know, if Grant Bricks
10:10
is going to win that job, like make him earn it, make him beat somebody out for it. That's what I
10:14
that's, you know, it's kind of like in the NFL when you draft a rookie and then you sign a
10:18
veteran type thing, you know, I think that's what Nebraska needs to do with some of those positions
10:21
But the most important one to me is they've got to find a quarterback in the transfer portal
10:27
I think that Chubba could develop into a quality starter, but there's too much to risk, you know
10:33
to put all of your eggs in his basket, so to speak. So they need to find somebody that can compete
10:39
you know, and that I honestly, I would like to, I just would like them to get like a Sam Hartman type
10:45
somebody that, you know, is so good that, you know, Chubba Purdy ain't beaten him out
10:49
That's, you know what I mean? So we'll see how that plays out, but that's my biggest question mark this offseason
10:54
because if they go get a proven quarterback, like a proven quarterback, this team can win eight to ten games, in my opinion, next year
11:01
I agree. And, you know, I think, you know, we mentioned USC and UCLA
11:08
I mean, I think USC is going to have an entirely different quarterback next year, so it's not out of the question that we could give them a game
11:15
I mean, look at them this year. I mean, they had one of the best in college football, and they went seven and five
11:19
So, you know, they've got, you know, Malachi Nelson, who's the number two
11:26
quarterback, I believe, in the 2023 class. So he's going to be their guy next
11:30
year. I can't believe they would be adding anybody from the transfer portal. That would surprise me
11:34
greatly. That would tell me that they don't think Malachi Nelson's that
11:38
great. But then again, it is tough to come in and play as a freshman. So we'll see. And
11:42
Lincoln, the thing about Lincoln Riley is he's kind of going to be on the hot seat too, because
11:46
it's one thing when you're Matt rule, you know, but then when you're
11:50
when you leave Oklahoma to go to USC, like that's not, you don't
11:54
you're not expected, you're expected to win national championships or compete, and especially when they got so close last year
12:01
and then you had a lot of the same guys and you totally, you know, just fall on your face like that
12:06
That's not, I wouldn't want to be Lincoln Riley right now. And then also you got, yeah, I mean, you also got Ohio State
12:13
I mean, we don't know what's going to happen with Ryan Day. You know
12:17
Wouldn't want to be Ryan Day today. No, not at all. And, you know, Kyle McCord, you know, will probably start
12:26
next year maybe i mean you kind of are plugged in a little bit more to ohio state than i am i just
12:32
focused on like iowa and nebraska and things like that but but honestly i'm not you take away
12:36
and i'm sure it's true for anybody but my point still stands you take away guys like marvin harrison
12:42
junior and you know all those playmakers and you know i'm not really impressed with kyle mccord
12:47
they're they're a good football team but i was watching the game on saturday and but honestly i was more
12:53
impressed with their defense. I thought their defense, you know, even though they lost, I thought they played reasonably well
12:58
So I'm not necessarily scared of Ohio State next year, you know, especially if there's coaching turnover
13:06
And quite honestly, I think it's just so funny because, you know, fans are so mad that Ohio
13:17
State lost to Michigan, right? And Ohio State's 11 and 2 now, right
13:23
11 and 1 yeah there's still 11 and 1 so meanwhile we are mad that we can't even get to a bowl game
13:33
at 6 wins or we get 6 wins and you know it's just crazy like
13:39
man I would love to be so mad that we're 11 and 1
13:42
and you know you know go into like some probably some January
13:48
game either way so I mean it's just crazy like there's crazy fans everywhere and, you know, it's just interesting to look at the
13:58
juxtaposition between us and a program like Ohio State. Like, I would love to have the luxury of being mad at an 11 win season
14:06
Yeah, well, Nebraska used to have that luxury. Nebraska fans were mad at, like, 1996, they were mad at a, they didn't win the national title
14:14
And, you know, so yeah. Yeah, well, I was one year old then, almost 29
14:19
So it's a long time. It has been, yeah. So it will be interesting to see how that situation plays out
14:28
And UCLA could have a new head coach. They haven't really said they were going to, they were going to fire Chip Kelly
14:33
And then he beat the crap out of USC. And now they don't really know. And so, yeah, it could be really interesting to see how that all plays out
14:40
But I do think that Nebraska is, you know, in a good spot with Matt Rule
14:45
I do think the game management, like at the end of the day, I'm not as worried about the game management
14:50
Like, it really annoys me in the moment because I feel like this team. could have, but at the end of the day, too, it's like, if you get better players, it does make it
14:58
because like, okay, here's the thing, is if, you know, if you have J.J. McCarthy as your quarterback
15:02
on that drive against Wisconsin, like, you're not thinking, like, once you get that first down
15:06
you're taking time out and you're going for the win. You know, because like, if you trust your, if you really, really truly, I mean, I think that
15:13
that just shows you how much Matt Ruhl at the end of the day doesn't, didn't trust Shabap
15:18
a Purdy. And I think last week showed he was right not to trust Shepa Purdy because, I mean, literally
15:22
he lost, I mean, he threw the game away when we were at midfield. So, I mean, it's like, you know, if you had a Caleb Williams, like, if you had
15:29
somebody, even a Sam Hartman, like, your game management at the, like, you wouldn't be
15:32
worried about throwing the ball at the, in the end zone on third and six
15:37
You would, you would have, you'd be like, why the hell aren't we throwing it? Because our quarterback is good
15:41
But our quarterbacks are so bad that, you know, like even throwing the ball on third and
15:45
six, you're like, why, don't even do it. Don't even do it. Just kick a field goal. So I think if you get like a legitimate starting quarterback
15:52
that doesn't handicap the entire offense. I think it just makes the whole game management thing much easier because you can actually
16:00
you know what I mean Like it just the way that the way that they had to try to compensate for their for their quarterback i think just really put matt rule in some uh conundrums with the game management
16:10
and then uh so yeah if at the end it's like you know it's like it's like it with basketball like
16:14
trying to win a close it's like you know you can talk about being like you know more prepared
16:19
at the end of the game but you know what really what it comes down to is you need players who can
16:24
dribble the ball who can make free throws who can take make good passes like that's not so much
16:28
coaching, you just need better players. So I think if they get a better quarterback than the game
16:33
management, I think will in part take care of itself. And also I think, you know, sophomore year
16:39
Tristan Alvano will take away some of the worry as well. I mean, there are points at times this season
16:45
where, you know, I think Matt Ruhl was probably worried about sending Alvano out there. And
16:51
you know, he did miss kicks this year. There's no doubt about it. I'm not going to give up on him
16:57
because it's been a while since we've had a consistent kicker. And, you know, people don't want to hear this either
17:04
but he's an 18-year-old freshman. I mean, there's still a lot of learning
17:08
and there's still a lot of growth to go for him and to give up on him now, like some fans want to do
17:13
I'm not saying you, but I've seen all over my timeline, fans want to get a kicker in the transit portal
17:18
And, I mean, yeah, I don't, yeah, it is kind of dumb
17:22
If he's doing this as junior year, then maybe bring in some competition
17:26
but right now he's just developing. He's just growing and, you know, he did make some, you know, key kicks
17:32
The one to go into overtime against Wisconsin was one of them
17:37
Made some big kicks against Northwestern, if I remember correctly. He had that one that he absolutely drilled from what, was it 40
17:44
Yeah, I think he made a 57 yarder. Yeah. I think it was like 56
17:50
It was pretty close to the Alex Henry. It wasn't quite, but it was like 56 or 55
17:56
or something. And it was a laser, too. It was an absolute laser. So, I mean, I'm not ready
18:02
And I think that was against, it might have been Purdue, but it might have been against Northwestern, too
18:06
Either way, it was a close game. And I know it was a big kick when he made it. So, yeah, and I just, that kick he tried on Friday, too
18:14
I mean, it was 44 yards dead into the wind. It's not like he missed a 30-yard field goal with no weather, you know
18:19
So, I mean, that was a tough kick. And I can see, like, what he was trying to do
18:24
He was trying to get the wind to carry it, back over, you know, over the goalposts and it just didn't carry
18:30
So just little stuff like that technique-wise, he'll pick up and he'll learn because
18:35
unlike other kickers we've had, there is no question that Elvano has the leg to do it
18:40
There is absolutely zero question. It's just a matter of technique and, you know, getting better
18:45
So I'm excited to see his growth next year too. And quite honestly, maybe we'll have him on the show at some point in the offseason
18:52
Yeah, we should try to get Tristan back. He did a great, he'll be fine. I think he'll do a good job
18:56
And that is one thing. The special teams, I think, do need to get better. And Ed Foley, I think we'll work with that
19:02
And part of that, too, is the players. You know, like the, you know, Tristan's going to get
19:06
because basically the way I look at it, the coverage was pretty good this year
19:10
I don't believe they gave up any return touchdowns unless I'm totally blanking
19:14
I don't think so either. And that used to be a major problem, like even two years ago. So that is, that is a marker for improvement
19:22
I know that sounds to some, like, you know, a terrible, you know, that's a stupid metric
19:28
But Nebraska prior to this year, you know, was always good for a couple kickoff returns for touchdowns, a season
19:37
And then, you know, you look at, yeah, Tristan missed some kicks
19:41
but I think that will correct itself next year with his development. And then I just think you need to find, like I said
19:46
a big time return guy, whether that's the Juko, Trey Richardson, who's going to be visiting December 16th or somebody else
19:52
Like they need to find somebody who's a weapon in the. return game. And, you know, because I mean, how many, you know, Iowa's been able to do that for years and
19:59
that's been a big benefit for them. So, you know, that's one thing. I think Matt understands
20:03
Matt Ruhl understands the importance of special teams. And so I do think that, you know
20:07
if they can find a big return guy, that'll make a big difference. Because outside of that
20:11
you know, they were really close to being to being pretty good on special teams. And the defense was
20:16
good. You know, just got to find a quarterback. So I guess to shift a little bit, you know, some of the
20:21
off-season priorities here in the last, you know, kind of part here of the show
20:26
Obviously, we've said, you know, quarterback, I think, is a big one. What are your some of your off-season priorities either, you know, for this 2024 class
20:34
which is signing in a little less than a month now, about three weeks
20:38
That's not, isn't it? Yeah. And then the transfer portal, which will be opening, I believe, next Monday
20:45
Yeah, I think you're right on the opening of the transfer portal. And, man, it seems like Carter Nelson just committed
20:50
and now we're at the end of the season, you know, three weeks away from early signing day
20:55
It's like, wow. But anyway, another running back in the transfer portal
21:00
or, you know, another running back for the room will be good. I know they're bringing in Lamar Radcliffe for a visit on December 15th
21:09
He's a four-star running back out of Sacramento, originally committed to Utah
21:14
and he decommitted over the summer. So I'd love to add more depth to the running back room
21:20
because, you know, coming into the season, you thought our running back room was pretty stacked
21:25
and it was until injuries kind of took that depth away. And, you know, fortunately, you know, a silver lining to this was we got to see the emergence of Emmett Johnson
21:37
And, you know, I'd love to see a guy like Radcliffe, for example, come in and, you know
21:42
how about the room? Because they're going to have Emmett Johnson. They're going to have Vermeer Johnson back
21:47
They're going to have Quentin Ives. I mean, that's a pretty nice room. And so adding a guy like Lamar Radcliffe would be good
21:55
And then I'm trying to think on the defensive side of football if we need any specific position
22:05
We're pretty set defensively. Maybe another corner. But, I mean, honestly, if Ty Robinson didn't come back and, you know, Nash, you know, he hasn't done to anything
22:18
but we're assuming he's coming back. I mean, if they didn't come back, then I would say defensive linemen
22:22
but I like the way we line up defensively. It's more, honestly, and stop me if you've heard this one before
22:28
it's more addressing the offensive issues than the defensive issues for Nebraska
22:34
A quarterback and running back, in my opinion, are the two biggest needs because depth
22:40
for both of those positions goes quickly. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, defensive line, offensive tackles, quarterbacks
22:50
You know, those are going to be the three, kind of the three big positions. I don't know if they, running back, I think I feel okay with Emmett Johnson
22:58
And, you know, I'm not sure. I believe that Gabe Irvin would be back next year
23:02
I don't really know all about that. You know, Radcliffe, I think, would be a nice commitment
23:08
If they can get him, there's going to be a dead period from December 1st to the 15th
23:13
That's why he's taking the visit on the 16th or whatever the date
23:16
That's the last day of the dead period. So there's a couple weeks of dead period here. Not that you can still, I think you can still text kids
23:23
but outside of that, they can't come on campus or anything. So that last week will be really interesting with, you know
23:29
Shrey Richardson and Radcliffe. They had the other running back that visited this weekend
23:35
That was, I want to say Gibson. Boise State. Yeah, Gibson. So, yeah, there's a couple of guys there to watch to see how that kind of plays out
23:46
I mean, my biggest thing is let's get this. the i mean at this point i'm wondering if grant bricks is just not going to say anything until
23:52
signing day i don't i mean he might just sign i mean that would be very odd grant because he's had a
23:58
very quiet commitment overall yeah so i mean uh they brian munson said that like it wouldn surprise him if he didn even like make an announcement you know just that that kind of how Grant Bricks is So I kind of like that But I mean Chad Simmons from on three put in another pick yesterday
24:17
So, I mean, you've got Chad Simmons, Wilfong, a bunch of other people. I mean, I feel like it's a done deal
24:21
But just just get those guys to the finish line. I feel really great about this 2024 class with Grant Bricks part of it
24:30
I mean, you get two top. top 150 offensive lineman you get a top 100 tight end you get um a elite 11 quarterback we get two
24:40
wide receivers who i think are both blue chip caliber players jacori barney actually three because i think
24:45
jac corny chukori barney is a blue chip player but i think he's still underrated where he's at and he was
24:49
a finalist for uh miami dade wide receiver of the year which in florida you know with the
24:55
amount of talent that they have especially at wide receiver that's no slouch of an honor i mean yeah so i i you know
25:02
It's too bad we lost Keywin Lacey because this would be a star-studded class. I think he's going to Bama
25:07
Yeah, he's probably going to Bama. So, I mean, that is. Yeah, it would be pretty hard, especially with, yeah, all the first round picks they've had at that position
25:17
Yeah. So, but anyways, you know, if you get Daniel Radcliffe who, you know, is ranked 520
25:23
I mean, that's my number one target right now at the running backboard and get him on campus
25:27
I think you've got a good chance to get him, and that's another really good class. So I feel pretty good about this class going forward
25:35
And, yeah, I just got to find a quarterback. That's my number one thing
25:39
If this team can find a proven quarterback, I have zero doubt that they will win eight, nine games next season
25:46
Zero doubt. And I have to say, in comparison from last off season to this off season
25:53
I was very impressed with Donovan Rayola. I've been impressed with the way the line has developed
25:59
once he's been able to coach up his guys and, you know, have a complimentary offensive system, unlike Mark Whipple
26:07
And also, I'm impressed, you know, not just, you know, throughout his tenure, but also just this calendar year and this cycle
26:16
I've been impressed with his recruiting chops because I remember you and I were talking earlier, you know, not on the show, but just in the chat, how, you know, he's kind of got to step up and be that recruiter
26:27
well over the last, you know, years. So he really has. So I've been impressed with, you know
26:33
the work that he's done this season and this calendar year. And, you know, obviously we'll see what happens next season
26:39
But, you know, that's a coaching move that Matt Roommade sticking with him
26:43
that I think may pay dividends. Yeah. I think Terence Knighton has been a really good hire
26:51
I've been dissing on Raola a lot. I'll eat my words happily
26:56
Yeah, he did a good. great job, you know, with this group and with this recruiting class. So it looks, we're starting to, you know
27:03
that's one of the things I'm most comfortable or most confident is that Matt Rule. You know, he kind of
27:08
delivered on that promise of being better in the trenches. And that's, that's how this program is going to get
27:13
like if you want to look at how Michigan had beat Ohio State three times in a row, okay, it has nothing
27:18
to do with signs. It has to do with the fact that, you know, when Ohio State used to beat Michigan
27:22
when they had Urban Meyer, they won the rushing battle. They were tougher in the trenches. They
27:26
won the line of scrimmage every year. You know, Zeke Elliott, I can't even remember all the running backs now
27:31
but they would just run the ball right down Michigan's throat. It wasn't some pass-happy offense
27:36
I mean, they did have obviously good quarterbacks, but, and then Ryan Day came in
27:40
and Jim Harbaugh kind of doubled down on that philosophy and said, we're going to win in the trenches, and that's how they've won
27:46
It has nothing to do with, you know, you can have all the, you can have all the fancy toys you want a wide receiver that you want
27:51
but you have to be able to control the line of scrimmage to win football games. And if you want to look at, you want to look at the
27:56
two teams that were in the Super Bowl last year, like, yeah, Jalen Hertz and Pat Mahomes are great
28:01
They're two of the best. But they also have two of the best offensive and defensive lines in the league
28:05
And you look at the Philadelphia Eagles, they never, every single time they draft someone
28:09
in the first round, almost is a guy that weighs 300 pounds, because those are the guys
28:13
that win football games, you know, and the quarterback too, obviously. But, you know, you need to have one quarterback and about 10 guys that are 300 pounds that
28:21
can play. And I think that Nebraska is, you know, long story short, they're building along that path
28:26
So that's what has me excited about the future is they know how to build this team from the inside out
28:32
Preston and Grant on the line, you know, as offensive line commits, like, that's a nice little combo right there
28:38
I got to say, that's pretty solid. And then, you know, you have used to, I think in terms of the line itself, you have a lot to be excited about
28:48
And, you know, I think Donovan Rayola is a good example of what happens, you know, when you start to
28:56
build consistency because the offensive line position, we talked about the coordinator, you know
29:02
the shuffling of coordinators throughout the years. And, you know, quite honestly
29:05
the same has kind of happened at the offensive line. And, you know, Matt Ruhl took a chance
29:11
by hiring Donovan Raola back. And it looks as though it's been paying off
29:17
So I'm excited to see what Rayola can do in his third season because I think we'll continue to see growth at the position
29:24
and growth that we haven't had in a long time. Yeah, a lot of good growth there that we haven't had in a long time
29:31
and that's going to be a really good thing here. Before I kind of wanted to wrap up, just wanted to touch on, you know
29:37
obviously basketball got a big win yesterday over Cal State Fullerton. So that was good for them to see them
29:44
You know, they improved a 7-0 on the season. You know, the defense was a little bit
29:47
It was a little disappointing to see him give up that much 82 points. It was 85-72, but still 7-0
29:54
And then the big one next Sunday against Crate. You know, the Creighton is ranked
29:59
They're 5 and 1, Nebraska 7 and 0, so that's going to be a pretty fun matchup
30:04
Obviously, the Huskers won last season, so hopefully to make it two in a row over Creighton
30:09
And also the volleyball team, they lost on Friday night, which was a bummer to Wisconsin
30:15
But still the number one overall seed in the NCAA tournament, and they'll be opening up on Friday against Long Island University
30:21
you know, they'll be hosting up through, I think, the regional final
30:27
So anyway, lots of stuff happening this week, Nebraska basketball on Sunday
30:31
volleyball on Friday, and we'll be covering a lot of news on the Husker Big Red Swite
30:37
about football and all that, all of those other things. So make sure that you buckle up
30:42
It's going to be a busy off season here for Nebraska football fans. Not a long one
30:48
Like next August seems so far away. I'm so disappointed. I went through this grieving process on Friday
30:54
but every year I'm excited for four months, and then the months ends
30:59
and then we start the cycle again. I guess this is, I guess this is my life now
31:07
Yeah, I mean, it's disappointing the season's over, especially because it ended with
31:11
you know, such a thud, but, you know, buy so fast. Like, it really did go by really fast, I thought
31:17
I mean, yeah, it's crazy. We're a championship week. So we've got one more
31:21
We've got championship week, and then it's bowl season, and then all football is over
31:26
So it's crazy how quick it comes. But we will be here with you every step of the way for the off season
31:32
Absolutely destroy Iowa, by the way. Like, I can't even believe that that's a matchup that's allowed
31:37
Michigan is going to, I think, run the table with Iowa. It's going to be a boring championship game
31:42
Should be, but you never know with Iowa. Iowa's crazy. So I don't know that they scare me
