What Can We Learn From King Saul Early Days? A Look At 1 Samuel 9
49 views
Feb 20, 2025
The Lord has laid a burden on my heart for the last several months, and it has to do with understanding what it means to live by faith. all of this started when I read Hebrews 11:6" Without faith it's impossible to please God, for he who comes to HIm must believe that He exist and rewards those who earnestly seek after Him". So what I've been doing now is finding passages that explain what it means to have faith. We've studied several passages in the last couple of weeks and today we'll be looking at the story of Saul, and zeroing in on his early days. I'll invite you to watch the video in its entirety. Thanks

hello good morning this is ty Eva is
0:02
calm and today we're gonna be covering
0:05
some portions of the Old Testament we're
0:08
gonna be looking at first on your line
0:10
and the title of my screen you can see
0:14
that it says what can we learn from
0:16
kings or early days now the reason why I
0:20
chose these are this this topic is
0:23
because I've been studying the concept
0:26
of faith and what it means to walk by
0:29
faith because scripture says the
0:31
righteous shall live by faith and in
0:33
Hebrews 11:6 we are told without faith
0:36
it's impossible to please God so what
0:39
are the things that I've been looking at
0:41
is I've been looking at portions of the
0:42
scriptures in in the Old Testament in
0:44
the New Testament I mention faith toward
0:47
I have to do with faith so and the thing
0:51
is this we need to really understand
0:53
what it means to walk by faith and I
0:55
shared several lectures a little while
0:58
ago about this concept of faith and and
1:00
I don't think are quite half rusted yet
1:03
and the Lord keeping stretching my
1:04
understanding about it and this time
1:06
we're gonna be looking at first on your
1:09
9 and we're gonna look at the story of
1:11
Saul and his early days before he became
1:13
King Saul and we're gonna trying to
1:16
understand a couple of things there okay
1:17
so follow on my screen next slide so the
1:22
background first so the people of Israel
1:25
had just rejected the idea of a George
1:28
because they were being ruled by a
1:30
George at a time and Samuel was the last
1:32
George so basically they rejected God as
1:35
told in first on your eighth and we're
1:37
gonna read that verse one to nine
1:40
scripture says when Samuel became old he
1:43
made his sons judges over Israel the
1:47
name of his firstborn was old and the
1:49
name of his second Abijah they were
1:52
judges in Beersheba yet his sons did not
1:56
work in a ways but turned aside after
1:58
gain
1:59
they took bribes and perverted justice
2:02
then all the elders of Israel gathered
2:05
together and came to Samuel ARIMA and
2:08
said to him behold you are
2:11
old and your sons do not work in your
2:13
ways now appoint for us a king to judge
2:16
us like all the other nations what I
2:19
think displeased Samuel when they say it
2:23
give us a king to judges and Samuel
2:25
prayed to the Lord and the Lord said to
2:28
Samuel obey the voice of the people in
2:30
all that I say to you for they have not
2:32
rejected you but you've rejected me from
2:35
being king over them according to all
2:38
the deeds that they've done from the day
2:41
I brought them up out of Egypt even to
2:43
this day forsaking me as serving other
2:46
gods so they are also doomed to you now
2:49
then obey their voice only you shall
2:52
solemnly warned them and show them the
2:55
ways of the King we shall reign over
2:57
them so this is not good news for the
3:00
people of Israel because they basically
3:01
have rejected God as their king they
3:04
didn't wanna they said we want a king
3:07
that will fight our battle for us just
3:08
like the other nations so they did not
3:10
like the idea of a judge they wanted to
3:12
be like everybody else
3:14
all the surrounding nations so basically
3:16
saying we don't want what God has to
3:18
offer we want to be like other people we
3:20
want to have a king that can fight for
3:21
us we want to have that kind of look
3:23
that kind of beautiful looking thing
3:25
that they wanted this is what they want
3:26
in their own mind and they rejected God
3:29
by rejecting Samuel as charge over them
3:32
and this will come with a lot of
3:35
consequences and to this day they are
3:37
still suffering from it because when
3:40
Jesus came
3:41
they couldn't recognize him as king and
3:43
they rejected is automatically so but
3:45
before that what we're gonna do today is
3:46
we're gonna look at King Saul's early
3:48
days because the people of Israel have
3:51
requested a king and now God gives them
3:54
a king that they want the kind of king
3:56
that they want to do they are looking
3:58
for they are seeking for to look at
4:00
other nations so he gives them salt to
4:02
teach them a lesson so let's look at
4:05
that and we're gonna look at King Saul's
4:07
own background now Saul the King came
4:09
from a wealthy family he was handsome
4:12
tall very attractive if you look at
4:16
first time your novice one to two he
4:18
says there there was a man of Benjamin
4:21
whose name was Kish
4:22
the son of a bi son of zeros
4:25
the Koran son of a fear a Benjamite a
4:28
man of wealth and he had a son whose
4:31
name was Saul a handsome young man there
4:34
was not a man among the people of Israel
4:36
more handsome than he was from his
4:40
shoulders upward he was taller than any
4:43
of the people so you see this is what
4:46
people want d1d
4:47
handsome king they want someone who can
4:49
go up before them and Saul was used by
4:53
the Lord to teach them a valuable lesson
4:56
about what they want
4:58
okay so and often time we do the same
5:01
thing we want what we want to tell God
5:02
we want something and we keep on like
5:05
asking him about it and we don't even
5:08
know what we ask for and God says
5:10
sometimes okay let me give you what you
5:12
want just to teach you a lesson and
5:14
that's exactly what was happening now so
5:16
now I'm gonna read verse 3 to 27 and
5:19
then we're gonna go back to these to
5:21
understand Saul's our spiritual features
5:23
we just looked at his physical features
5:25
we talked about how he was tall handsome
5:27
and all that kind of stuff he came from
5:29
a wealthy family and now we're gonna
5:31
talk about these spiritual features but
5:33
before I read I read that I want to I
5:35
want to go back to actually reading the
5:39
scripture real quick okay so we're gonna
5:41
read from verse 3 to 27 follow with me
5:44
on the on the screen here I'm gonna read
5:47
from that so now the donkey's of Kish
5:49
Saul's father were lost so quiché say to
5:53
Saul his son take one of the young men
5:55
with you and arise go and look for the
5:58
donkeys and he passed through the hill
6:01
country of Ephraim and passed through
6:03
the land of Silesia
6:04
but they did not find him and they
6:07
passed through the land of Sharleen but
6:09
they were not there then they passed
6:11
through the land of Benjamin but it not
6:13
find them when they came to the land of
6:16
Zeus saul said to his servant who was
6:19
with him come let us go back lest my
6:22
father cease to care about the donkey's
6:24
and become anxious about us but he said
6:26
to him behold the reason man of God in
6:29
this city and his is a man who is held
6:32
in high honor all that he says comes
6:34
true so now let us go there perhaps he
6:38
can tell us the way
6:38
should go then salt sailor to his
6:41
servant well if you go what can we bring
6:44
the main for the bread in our sacks is
6:48
gone and there is no present to bring to
6:50
the man of God what do we have the
6:53
servant answered so again here I have
6:55
with me a quarter of a shackle of silver
6:57
and I'll give it to the man of God to to
7:00
to tell us are we formally in Israel
7:03
when a man went to inquire of God he
7:05
said come let us go to see a sea this
7:07
year for today's prophet was formerly
7:10
known called a seer and so I say to his
7:13
servant well said come let us go
7:16
so they went to the city where the man
7:17
of God was I stay went up the hill to
7:21
the city they met a young women coming
7:23
out to draw water and say to them is
7:26
this here here the answered he is behold
7:29
he is just ahead of you hurry he has
7:31
come just now to the city because the
7:34
people have sacrificed to be on the high
7:36
place as soon as she entered the city
7:38
you will find him before he goes up to
7:40
the high place to eat for the people
7:42
would not eat till he comes since he
7:45
must bless the sacrifice afterward those
7:47
who are invited would eat now go up for
7:50
you meet him immediately so they went up
7:52
to the city
7:53
I still want entering the city they saw
7:55
Samuel coming coming out toward them and
7:58
his way on his way up to the high place
8:01
now the day before Saul came the Lord
8:04
had revealed the Samuel tomorrow about
8:06
this time I was sent to you a man from
8:08
the land of Benjamin and he shall anoint
8:10
him to be Prince over my people Israel
8:14
he shall save my people from the hand of
8:16
the Philistines for I've seen my people
8:18
because that cry has come to me when
8:21
samuel saul saul the Lord told him here
8:23
is the man who must spoke to you he it
8:26
is who shall restrain my people then
8:29
sort of first samuel in the gate and
8:31
said tell me where is the house of this
8:32
year samuel answered soul I am this year
8:36
go up before me to the high place for
8:38
today we shall eat with me and in the
8:40
morning I will let you go and we tell
8:42
you all this on your mind
8:44
as for your donkeys that were lost the
8:46
three days ago do not set your mind on
8:48
them
8:49
they have been found and for whom is all
8:51
that is desirable in Israel is he not
8:54
for you and for all your father's house
8:56
so I answered am I not the Benjamite
8:59
from the list of the tribes of Israel
9:01
and it's not my clan the homeless of all
9:04
the clans of the tribe of Benjamin why
9:06
then have you spoken to me in this way
9:08
then Samuel took Saul and his young men
9:11
and brought them into it hall and give
9:13
them a place of at the head of those who
9:15
have been invited who were about thirty
9:17
persons and Sonya said to the cook bring
9:19
the portion I gave you if we just say to
9:21
you put it aside so the cook took the
9:24
leg and what was on it
9:26
and said shut them before sex old and
9:28
Samuel said see what was kept you said
9:31
before he eat because he was kept for
9:33
you until the hour appointed that you
9:35
might eat with the guests so saw ate
9:38
with saengil that day and when they came
9:40
down from the high place into the city a
9:42
bed was spread for Saul on the roof
9:44
and he lay down to sleep and a daybreak
9:47
at the break of dawn samuel caught us
9:50
all on the roof up let me send you on
9:52
your way
9:52
so Saul arose and both he and Samuel
9:55
went out into the street as they were
9:58
going down the article of the city
10:00
Samuel said to Saul tell the servant to
10:02
pass on before us and when he got passed
10:04
on stop hear yourself for a while that I
10:07
mean let me make known to you the Word
10:09
of God that's important i mimic known to
10:11
you the Word of God
10:13
okay scriptures say faith comes by
10:16
hearing and hearing by the Word of God
10:18
so God has spoken a word and in Samuel
10:21
was gonna tell Saul what the word was so
10:25
now let's go back to the slide and we
10:27
will see what we got from here now the
10:30
first thing I want to mention is the
10:31
spiritual features of Saul and from what
10:36
we read we can realize that Saul wasn't
10:39
very interested in the things of God
10:41
because his servant knew more about
10:43
Samuel the Prophet and we did as a
10:46
matter of fact Saul knew nothing
10:48
it was Samuel the man of God and soul
10:51
also had a transactional view of God his
10:53
sheep were lost and he can find them and
10:56
his serving suggested that they go to
10:58
Samuel for help Saul immediately thought
11:01
well we can't just get this type of
11:03
Intel or information for free we have to
11:06
give him something in order to extract a
11:08
revelation out of him so solid is kind
11:11
of transactional view of God and the
11:13
things of God you can see that from the
11:15
early age okay
11:16
even when Saul saw Samuel faced the
11:19
field he can tell that samuel was a
11:21
prophet and I'm sure prophets had an
11:24
attire our specific and everyone knew
11:26
when they were in the prayers of a
11:28
prophet on in the presence of a prophet
11:30
so this is to me so it's just so
11:32
interesting that solid will recognize
11:34
the Prophet by just looking at him face
11:36
to face
11:36
so Saul was so pleased just to read that
11:39
he can tell and while Saul was looking
11:41
for his dog lost donkeys God used that
11:45
circumstance the call saw to accomplish
11:47
his purpose the lost donkeys were God's
11:49
instrument to draw us all to himself so
11:52
you see what's going on here so the
11:54
spiritual features of soul are pretty
11:55
clear okay let's read more now God chose
11:58
Saul now Saul had absolutely nothing to
12:01
do with the position of the king of
12:03
Israel he was chosen and appointed by
12:05
God because every verse in his passage
12:08
is showing us how oblivious is to what
12:11
is going on the only reason who knew the
12:13
owner is the only person who knew Saul
12:16
was going to be King was Sonny on the
12:17
Prophet and anything is this with all
12:20
the honor that he was being given
12:22
meaning Saul he never occurred to him
12:25
that God's favor was on him when people
12:28
came in contact with Samuel they usually
12:30
were fearful because prophets were
12:32
usually synonymous with God is coming
12:34
and I usually created a sense of like
12:36
healthy fear in the people being Moody
12:38
in the presence of God and they had to
12:40
be straightened okay
12:42
well Saul seems to be just fine with
12:45
conversing with a prophet that is
12:47
showing him a lot of favor I mean you
12:50
see what Sonia was to eat say bring out
12:52
the best meat from lay out this bad form
12:54
we are waiting for you so that we can
12:56
start eating all these things designs
12:58
our God is speaking to him through
13:00
Samuel and solids like oblivious to it
13:02
and he happens to us sometimes God is
13:05
speaking and God has shown us so much
13:07
favor and we are bridges because we are
13:09
so dull minded
13:12
once again it shows like I see on the
13:14
screen how everything that was happening
13:16
was a result of God's choice not me and
13:18
choice because God is doing everything
13:21
and Saad is like just sitting there just
13:23
not knowing what's going on in verse 27
13:26
and there's something specific
13:29
God had a Rhema that was specifically
13:32
customized for Saul and his servant
13:34
wasn't to be part of it so he had to be
13:37
isolated in order to hear it now why am
13:40
i mentioning this not everything that
13:42
God tells us is meant for the masses
13:45
even close friends sometimes okay Jesus
13:49
says you are no longer servant but frame
13:51
for are men known to you the will of my
13:54
father the servant by definition doesn't
13:56
know his master's business but if Frank
13:58
does and God was extending his
14:01
friendship to Saul as he has always been
14:03
you see he's kind of separated a servant
14:05
from Saul to show us all look I'm
14:08
extending my friendship to you I want
14:10
you to hear this because I want you to
14:12
know about my business this is what God
14:14
was saying through Samuel but I don't
14:16
think Saul was getting and I said here
14:18
even after everything that took place in
14:20
Saul's life his heart was never fully
14:22
devoted to the Lord because no one can
14:24
come to God unless prompted by the Holy
14:27
Spirit God can extend his friendship to
14:29
us and show us wonders and all things
14:32
and because by nature we hate him we'll
14:35
find a reason to reject his offer and
14:37
unless God changes our heart we will
14:40
never truly fall in love with him it's
14:41
not up to us but to God we neighbors us
14:44
to carry out his will okay is by grace
14:47
through faith and I was from concluding
14:49
word here in Romans 8 verse 7 scripture
14:53
says for the mind that is set on the
14:55
flesh is hostile to God for it does not
14:58
submit to God's law indeed he cannot and
15:01
what'd you learn what'd you learn from
15:04
Saul's life is that even though God can
15:07
extend his friendship God can show us
15:09
all these wonders God can show us his
15:11
favor unless our heart is changed by the
15:15
Holy Spirit we'll find a way to reject
15:17
it either by being so oblivious to it
15:21
that we don't even care
15:22
we just don't Stevie show any enthusiasm
15:25
or sometimes like Jesus talks about it
15:28
the parable of the soil you know
15:30
sometimes the the seed will fallen like
15:33
rocky rocky ground or Tony bushes and
15:36
stuff like that so by nature we are not
15:41
attracted to God even though he's so
15:42
lovely altogether he is good and and
15:45
faithful and he shows us and extend his
15:47
friendship man by nature do not like it
15:51
and that's what he says the mind set on
15:53
the flesh is hostile to God before he
15:56
does not submit to God's law in deity
15:58
cannot so what does have to be to do
16:00
with faith remember what the word says
16:02
in the scripture here I read earlier let
16:05
me show to you again
16:09
[Music]
16:11
Samuel said tell the servant to pass on
16:14
before us and when he has passed on stop
16:17
here for yourself for a while that I may
16:20
make known to you the Word of God you
16:23
see that I may make known to you the
16:25
Word of God I may make known to you the
16:30
Word of God so faith comes by hearing
16:32
and hearing by the Word of God
16:34
so unless God speaks his word changes
16:39
does not happen in our heart so this is
16:42
why we live by faith and faith faith
16:45
comes by hearing again by the word of
16:47
God the natural man resists the things
16:51
of God and the natural main to him the
16:54
things of God are foolishness because by
16:56
nature this is what we are we are just
16:58
cold hearted and we are just callous we
17:01
don't receive the things of God he
17:02
concealed him in the in Saul's life the
17:04
whole time he's not interested all these
17:06
things our God is shown him Saul is just
17:08
cold is not warming up to it that's
17:11
because his spirit is not receiving it
17:14
because his mind is set on the flesh at
17:17
the time so he's not seeing all these
17:19
things that God is doing you understand
17:21
that so this is why it's important to
17:22
understand believe by faith because once
17:25
we begin to warm up to the themes of God
17:27
this is an indication that his Spirit is
17:30
working in us is not a student work is
17:32
God himself planting those seeds and
17:34
planting those desires in our
17:36
to receive it and then we change as a
17:39
result so no one can come to God unless
17:42
prompted by the holy spirit and that's
17:44
what I wanted you to see this morning
17:46
through Saul's life in the beginning
17:47
okay so we got you might be looking at
17:49
more of stuff in Saul's life but this
17:51
day I want you to if if this has spoken
17:55
to you I want you to soft in your heart
17:57
and ask God to show you what he has for
18:00
you to tell you the Word of God for you
18:03
this morning
18:04
the ARIMA ARIMA ARIMA of God for you
18:08
today all right and that's when changes
18:11
happened have a wonderful day and I'll
18:13
see you next
