I shared a video on 1 Thessalonians chapter 1 about a week ago but I revisited the passage in the past 24 hours and a specific portion of chapter 1 caught my attention. And I wanted to share what I gleaned from it with you.

hello good morning this is.com
0:03
and uh last week I was talking about the
0:06
book of Rome first Thessalonians we went
0:09
to chapter one and I actually shared a
0:12
video of it uh that was like two weeks
0:14
ago last week I think it's last week
0:16
right so if you want to catch the video
0:17
I'll have a link for you in the
0:19
description but this morning
0:21
I wanted to do to go back to uh chapter
0:24
one again and there was something that
0:25
caught my attention last night as I was
0:28
reading on the scripture over and over
0:30
again like it's so amazing because
0:33
sometimes
0:34
you think you've understood something
0:36
fully and you go back to it again and
0:38
again and there are like layers that
0:40
have been like opened up to you so
0:42
that's what happened
0:43
yesterday when I went back and then
0:46
checked out chapter one again so what
0:48
I've been doing is this I've been
0:49
reading this chapter in the French
0:51
version then I also chose the ESV the
0:54
nazbe the Amplified version the complete
0:57
Jewish Bible because I do that because
0:58
sometimes things get lost in certain
1:01
translations I'm not saying that the
1:03
words are lacking but what I'm saying is
1:05
sometimes when you read
1:07
um the scripture in a different
1:08
translation
1:09
you capture more and and I thank God for
1:13
uh that I speak more than one language
1:15
because it does help a lot in this way
1:17
so what I what I really what I wanted to
1:20
go through again was um verses four two
1:23
six and seven those really caught my
1:26
attention and that's what I wanted to go
1:27
back to again before I start let me give
1:30
you again the background to this letter
1:31
so Paul was writing to the Thessalonians
1:35
and uh this is a church that he actually
1:38
pretty much established in less than a
1:40
month if I believe correctly because if
1:43
you go to uh I'm gonna go to uh let me
1:46
go to Bible Gateway and I'm going to
1:48
open up uh something for you here real
1:50
quick
1:51
go back to let's go to acts 17 and we'll
1:55
see how long it took Paul to establish
1:57
this church so if you go to acts 17
1:59
right
2:00
this is where he goes to areopagus at
2:03
some point but before that
2:05
listen to what the scripture says when
2:07
Paul and his companions had passed to
2:10
amphipolis and Apollonia they came to
2:13
thessalonica where there was a Jewish
2:15
synagogue as was his custom hall went
2:19
into the synagogue and on three Sabbath
2:22
days he reasoned with them from the
2:25
scriptures explaining and proving that
2:28
the Messiah had to suffer and rise from
2:31
the dead this Jesus I proclaimed to you
2:34
is the Messiah he said
2:36
some of the Jews were persuaded and
2:39
joined Paul and Silas as did a large
2:43
number of God fearing Greeks and quite a
2:47
few prominent women so you can see that
2:49
this is where
2:51
this church was established as you can
2:53
see from the scripture the scripture
2:54
says in verse 4 some of the Jews were
2:57
persuaded and joined Paul and Silas as
3:00
did a large number of God hearing Greeks
3:05
and quite a few prominent women but
3:08
other Jews were jealous so they rounded
3:10
up some bad characters from The
3:12
Marketplace form the mob and started a
3:15
riot in the city they rushed to Jason's
3:17
house in search of Paul and Silas in
3:20
order to bring them out of the crowd so
3:22
this is where the persecution started
3:24
they wanted to get Paul and they
3:26
actually wanted to kill Paul so Paul had
3:28
to leave the Salonika and from that
3:30
Vantage when this is where he writes
3:32
this letter because people were accusing
3:34
Paul of being a deserter they said he
3:37
was trying to preach the gospel for
3:38
monetary reasons so Paul is going to
3:40
address that further on further later
3:44
in this letter but this is the
3:46
background to the letter okay this is
3:47
what has happened this chart was
3:49
established in a little less than a
3:51
month based on what the scripture says
3:53
and you can see that Paul it was his
3:55
custom to go to the synagogue and
3:57
actually preach there and reason with
4:00
their people in the synagogue he
4:01
reasoned he showed them from scriptures
4:03
listen he says to them listen this is
4:06
what the scripture says and I'm going to
4:07
explain that to you correctly so we are
4:10
told in the book of Timothy to to
4:13
correctly divide the word of God this is
4:16
the job of the expositive you have to
4:19
correctly divide the word of God not
4:21
just an exposited any Christian
4:24
you have to understand the word of God
4:26
and apply it correctly and this is what
4:29
Paul did when he went to the synagogue
4:30
he was trying to persuade his Jewish
4:32
Brothers
4:33
well some of them rejected him and then
4:36
as he was there they were God-fearing
4:38
bricks against personalized they came in
4:40
there they wanted to know about the God
4:42
of the Jews so they heard Paul and they
4:45
believed and then the Church of
4:47
thessalonica was from now let's go back
4:50
to the letter so what caught my
4:52
attention again listen to what Paul says
4:55
in verse four through seven he says that
4:57
when he preached the gospel to the
4:59
Thessalonians they received it as the
5:02
word of God listen to what he says in
5:05
actually let me read uh from verse two
5:07
to seven we give thanks to God always
5:09
for all of you constantly mentioning you
5:12
in our prayers remembering before our
5:15
God and Father your work of faith and
5:18
your labor of love and steadfastness of
5:20
Hope in our Lord Jesus Christ for we
5:23
know Brothers love my God that he has
5:26
chosen you because our gospel came to
5:29
you not only in word but also in power
5:32
and in the Holy Spirit and with full
5:35
conviction you know what kind of man you
5:38
proved to be among you for your sake
5:41
and you became imitators of awesome of
5:44
the Lord for you received the word in
5:46
much Affliction with the joy of the holy
5:48
spirit so that he became an example to
5:50
all the Believers in Macedonia and in a
5:53
care so basically now this is Paul is
5:56
rejoicing every time he prays for the
5:58
Thessalonians he find Joy why because as
6:03
Paul is praying for these people he
6:05
realizes these people are truly saved
6:07
because they've had a true encounter
6:10
with the Holy Spirit and God has changed
6:12
them they understand the gospel they
6:14
know and they have been convinced that
6:16
Jesus Christ is our atonement he is the
6:19
propitiation and Expedition for our sins
6:21
they've understood the gospel and then
6:23
Paul says something profound here okay
6:25
he mentions that their work was on their
6:28
work of Faith their labor of love and
6:31
their steadfast hope in the return of
6:33
Christ these three elements are pretty
6:35
much key in the life of any true Born
6:38
Again believer and I kind of want to go
6:40
through each one of them uh individually
6:42
before actually give you uh the gist of
6:45
his whole presentation so if you go back
6:48
to uh Faith what is faith we are told in
6:52
the book of uh Hebrews that without
6:54
faith is impossible to please God and
6:57
the Bible says that faith comes by
6:59
hearing and hearing by the word of God
7:01
so faith is produced by the holy spirit
7:04
in our lives so this is why some people
7:07
hear the same thing and he does nothing
7:10
for them and other people hear the same
7:12
word and he does something because God
7:15
when he sends his word he says my word
7:17
will not come to me will not return to
7:19
me void will accomplish the purpose for
7:21
which I send it in verses in Isaiah 55
7:23
chapter 10. so when the Thessalonians
7:26
heard the word of God there was change
7:28
meaning the word was effectual there was
7:31
an effect and that produced Faith so
7:35
that faith pretty much was conducive of
7:38
actions and those actions were again
7:40
inspired by faith they didn't just do
7:42
things for the sake of doing them they
7:44
did it because it was inspired by the
7:46
faith that was birthed in them but that
7:48
was birthed in them through the holy
7:50
spirit because Jesus says somewhere man
7:53
does not leave our bread alone over
7:54
every word that proceed from the mouth
7:57
of God meaning when the Thessalonians
7:59
heard the word he produced an action he
8:01
produced Faith this is why they were
8:04
acting out of Faith he didn't just do
8:06
something and again we need to
8:07
understand that faith
8:09
is not wishful thinking okay again faith
8:12
is birth from the promises of God that
8:15
are true so faith comes from the word of
8:17
God so his objective the word of God is
8:19
objective so when you hear by faith
8:21
meaning you heard it you believe it
8:23
because you know it came from the one
8:26
who spoke the word and things happen so
8:29
that word produced faith in the
8:31
Thessalonians and Paul witnessed it now
8:34
the second thing that he mentions is the
8:35
love of God now the love of God is not
8:38
something that you can produce out of
8:40
self-will okay I struggle with this
8:42
every day sometimes you do things that
8:44
you wonder am I doing this after of the
8:46
love from the love of God am I doing
8:48
this for my own personal reasons now the
8:50
love of God has nothing to do with your
8:52
emotions or your sentiment in the sense
8:54
that it's not it's not this bubbly thing
8:56
okay we have to understand if you go to
8:59
Romans 5 verse 5 the scripture is so
9:02
clear it says that listen to this and
9:05
hope does not put us to shame because
9:08
God as love has been poured out into our
9:12
hearts through what through the Holy
9:14
Spirit who has been given to us okay so
9:17
basically that love that the
9:19
Thessalonians were displaying and
9:21
exuding was a result of the Holy Spirit
9:24
pouring that love into their heart in
9:27
the sense that think about a cup okay
9:29
somebody pour something into something
9:31
meaning the Holy Spirit pours that love
9:34
into your heart and my heart and that we
9:36
are able to love like God lost so it's
9:38
not a love that is internal to us it's
9:41
external in the sense that it comes from
9:43
the Holy Spirit now because the Holy
9:45
Spirit lives in The Believer he is able
9:47
to exude that law because that love is
9:49
not part of us
9:51
you see that so their labor was out of
9:54
love in the sense that he came from God
9:59
I hope this makes sense to you and the
10:01
third thing that Paul mentions is they
10:03
hope that they have now what is that
10:06
hope we need to talk about that hope is
10:08
important if you go
10:10
to Romans 8 listen to what the scripture
10:12
says here for the creation was subjected
10:15
to frustration not by its own choice but
10:17
by the will of the one who subjected it
10:19
meaning God in hope that the creation
10:22
itself will be liberated or freed from
10:25
his bondage to Decay and brought into
10:28
the freedom and glory of the children of
10:30
God we know that the whole creation has
10:32
been groaning as in the Pains of child
10:35
birth right up to this present time not
10:38
only so but we ourselves who have the
10:40
first fruit of the spirit grown inwardly
10:43
as we wait eagerly for our adoption to
10:46
sonship the Redemption of our bodies for
10:49
in this hope
10:51
we were saved well hope that is seen is
10:54
no is no hope at all who hopes what they
10:56
already have but if we hope for what we
10:59
do not yet have we wait for it patiently
11:01
so they hope that Paul is mentioning
11:03
about the Thessalonians is this hope the
11:06
Redemption of their bodies the
11:08
Redemption and their adoption are sons
11:10
of God we still grown because we still
11:12
live in this body of death in the sense
11:15
that there is still a struggle between
11:16
the old nature and the new nature but
11:19
eventually when Jesus comes back for his
11:22
bride we will be that old body will be
11:26
done away with and that we will have a
11:28
resurrected body that no longer is prone
11:31
to sin
11:33
so that's the hope that the
11:35
Thessalonians were looking forward to
11:37
okay that hope of being redeemed because
11:39
of Jesus Christ sacrifice so this is the
11:43
hope that we have it's not wishful
11:44
thinking it's not well I hope it doesn't
11:46
rain tomorrow no this hope is based and
11:50
finds its foundation in the word of God
11:54
which is true
11:55
so it is no hope that is based on what I
11:58
want but it's based on what God has said
12:00
in his word so this is not wishful
12:02
thinking it is a hope that is sure and
12:05
it's a anchor to our soul if you go to
12:07
women's uh 15 listen to what the
12:10
scripture says for everything that was
12:13
written in the past was written the
12:16
teachers so that through the endurance
12:18
taught in the scriptures and the
12:20
encouragement they provide we might have
12:23
hope so this hope is based on the
12:25
scripture that was written for our sake
12:28
so that we read the scripture and now we
12:30
have hope because the scripture is what
12:32
lead us to Christ and say he is coming
12:35
back again to redeem his bride and we
12:37
are part part of the house of God and if
12:39
you are a born-again Believer then you
12:41
have this hope so those three things
12:43
faith
12:45
love and hope faith produced by the word
12:48
of God love produced by the Holy Spirit
12:51
who pours the love in our heart and then
12:52
hope the Hope base again on the word of
12:55
God so those three things are
12:56
characteristics of the true Born Again
12:58
believer you have these three things in
13:00
your life and the Thessalonians were
13:02
exuding that so he made Paul Rejoice now
13:05
the next thing we're going to talk about
13:07
now is that punch line that I mentioned
13:09
so
13:10
Paul says the Thessalonians
13:13
you know what kind of man he says
13:15
because our gospel came to you not only
13:17
in word but also in power and in the
13:21
Holy Spirit and with full conviction you
13:23
know what kind of man we proved to be
13:25
among you for your sake and you became
13:28
imitators of us and of the Lord for you
13:31
received the word in much Affliction
13:33
with the joy of the holy spirit so when
13:35
Paul preached to the Thessalonians
13:38
they received the word of God
13:40
ask the word of God
13:42
and the important when we came to you we
13:45
were aware that really God was in your
13:47
midst because the gospel came not only
13:50
in the word we didn't just speak it and
13:52
that was it but there was something else
13:54
that happened it says with power and the
13:58
Holy Spirit meaning the word produced
14:01
something and the Holy Spirit and full
14:03
conviction and then he gives the
14:04
punchline you know what kind of man
14:06
we prove to be among you for your sake
14:09
meaning their lives also spoke the
14:14
gospel Paul and Silas and Timothy did
14:17
not just preach the gospel and then left
14:19
he also lived it before the
14:21
Thessalonians and the Thessalonians saw
14:23
it they were eyewitnesses of the power
14:25
of the Gospel in Paul Silas and
14:28
Timothy's life so they also said they
14:31
didn't just preach it they lived it up
14:33
we believed this and God did the grace
14:37
of God did that in the sense that Paul
14:40
and Silas and Timothy were only able to
14:42
do this because of the grace of God
14:43
because Paul said somewhere I am what I
14:46
am by the grace of God he said for it is
14:49
God who works in US listen to that for
14:51
it is God who works in us both to Will
14:55
and act according to his good purpose so
14:58
the good purpose of God here was for the
15:00
Thessalonians so God worked in Paul he
15:03
preached the gospel and then God also
15:06
God also gave power to Paul in the sense
15:08
of his life was exuding The Life of
15:12
Christ and in Thessalonians received
15:15
this and they were also changed they
15:18
were they were being Afflicted but the
15:20
scripture says that they received the
15:22
joy of the Holy Spirit
15:24
why am I saying all this
15:26
I'm talking to myself and I'm talking to
15:28
you does your life
15:30
does your life exude the power of the
15:33
Holy Spirit and the power of the changed
15:36
life because listen to what Paul says
15:38
next he says this he became he
15:42
meditators of us and of the Lord Jesus
15:45
because the Thessalonians so-called they
15:48
heard the gospel and they said we want
15:50
what you have because we see it in your
15:52
life there is fruit in your life and we
15:55
want that life because you are pointing
15:58
us to Christ Jesus and this is what you
16:01
and I have to do in our lives by the
16:03
power of the holy spirit so we need to
16:05
get up every day and ask the Holy Spirit
16:08
to prick our hearts to convict us to
16:11
constantly convict us so we have to live
16:13
in fear now I'm not saying crippling
16:15
fear I'm not talking about crippling
16:17
fear I'm talking about a fear that wants
16:19
to lead you to a holy life that wants to
16:22
lead me to a holy life so when I live
16:24
that Holy life before people
16:27
God enables and honors his word in my
16:30
life
16:31
and it gives me the power to live a
16:33
righteous life I'm telling you there is
16:36
power behind it because the scripture
16:37
proves it so my prayer for you and I is
16:40
that we be Christians that live this out
16:42
we don't want to talk about the word of
16:45
God but we also ask God to prick our
16:47
hearts because we live in a day and age
16:50
where everybody wants to talk about the
16:52
love of God which is amazing but the
16:55
love of God is also seen in his
16:56
discipline in the sense that he
16:58
discipline who he loves
17:01
and we want our lives to reflect that
17:04
righteousness Holiness because that's
17:07
the only attribute of God that is raised
17:09
to the power of three the scripture says
17:11
in the book of Isaiah God is Holy Holy
17:14
Holy
17:15
so you and I our job is to live that
17:18
life before people
17:20
so that they can see and glorify Our
17:22
Father who is in heaven and then embrace
17:24
the Christ for their salvation for their
17:27
Redemption
17:28
that's all I wanted to say today have a
17:30
wonderful day and I'll see you next time
