hello and uh welcome back to our study
0:02
of the book of hebrews today we're going
0:04
to conclude chapter 11 as we zero in on
0:06
verses 11 to 40. and today's title is on
0:09
the triumph of faith now last week we
0:12
talked about contending uh the faith the
0:15
faith that we have is a faith that
0:16
contained and christians are not like
0:19
this polite nice and and kind of like
0:22
passive people that you know oftentimes
0:24
people preach them to be because in the
0:26
scripture we see that those people of
0:28
old they were warriors and when i say
0:31
warriors i'm not talking about fighting
0:32
blows for blows i'm talking about people
0:35
that were willing to give up their lives
0:37
because they believed in the truth the
0:38
truth of the gospel because that was the
0:40
actual truth that is this is true truth
0:43
so they were willing to resist evil in
0:45
all any way shape or form and we
0:47
mentioned moses's mother in the book of
0:50
genesis and the book of exodus how she
0:52
resisted pharaoh because pharaoh had
0:55
issued an edict and he wanted all the
0:57
hebrew male-born
0:59
boys to be killed and moses's mom
1:02
resisted the edict and she did not allow
1:04
the fear to dominate her so she was able
1:06
to resist because the spirit of god gave
1:09
her the boldness to resist and we also
1:11
mentioned moses himself who resisted
1:13
pharaoh at the time and we also talked
1:15
about rahab the prostitute we talked
1:17
about the people of um israel going
1:20
through the the red sea and resisting
1:23
pharaoh
1:24
so and that chapter was really about
1:26
contending and being strong in our faith
1:29
and we talked about how
1:31
this is not something that we can
1:32
manufacture because faith as we said in
1:35
romans 1 17 comes by hearing and hearing
1:38
by the word of god so the faith that we
1:40
have is not built on our own
1:43
manipulation it's not something that we
1:45
can master up it is
1:47
um dependent on god's word because faith
1:50
comes by hearing and hearing by the word
1:52
of god so it is god himself who works in
1:55
us through his word to will and act
1:57
according to his good purpose so that's
1:59
what we talked about last week so
2:01
the faith that we have is a faith that
2:03
contained for that which is right that
2:05
which is right in the eyes of god so
2:07
today we're going to conclude and we're
2:09
going to talk about the triumph of faith
2:12
so we're going to look at chapter
2:13
chapter 11 verses 32 until 40. so i'm
2:16
going to read the verses so you can
2:18
follow on the screen and then we're
2:20
going to try and unpack what this all
2:22
means to us today
2:24
so let's go to hebrews 11 verse 32 to
2:28
40. the scripture says
2:30
and what more shall i say
2:32
for time who failed me to tell of gideon
2:35
barack samson jephthah
2:37
of david and samuel and the prophets who
2:41
through faith conquered kingdoms and
2:44
forced justice
2:45
obtained promises stopped the mass of
2:48
lions quenched the power of fire escaped
2:51
the edge of the sword were made strong
2:53
out of weakness became mighty in war
2:56
put foreign armies to flight
2:59
women received back their dead by
3:00
resurrection some were tortured refusing
3:03
to accept release so that they might
3:05
rise again to a better life
3:07
others suffered mocking and flogging and
3:10
even change and imprisonment they were
3:12
stoned they were sown in two they were
3:15
killed with a sword they went about in
3:17
skins of sheep and goats destitute
3:20
afflicted mistreated of whom the world
3:23
was not worthy wandering about in
3:25
deserts and mountains and in danes and
3:28
caves of the earth
3:29
and all of these
3:31
though commended through their faith did
3:33
not received what was promised
3:36
since god had provided something better
3:38
for us that apart from us they should
3:40
not be made perfect i mean this is
3:43
incredible so
3:45
now let's try to understand what the
3:46
writer is trying to say to his readers
3:49
and to us today so in verses 32 and 34
3:52
we read
3:53
and what more shall i say
3:55
for time will fail me to tell of gideon
3:58
barack samson jephthah of david and
4:00
samuel and the prophet
4:02
who
4:03
through faith conquered kingdoms and
4:06
forced justice
4:08
obtained promises stopped the mouths of
4:11
lions quenched the power of fire escaped
4:14
the edge of the sword were made strong
4:16
out of weakness became mighty war and
4:19
put foreign armies to flight now a lot
4:21
of these examples you probably heard
4:22
about you heard about the story of david
4:24
and samuel samson those are like pretty
4:27
popular figures of the old testament a
4:30
lot of people don't know much about
4:31
gideon
4:32
or jephthah but those are things in
4:34
barack so those are stories that uh the
4:37
writer brings up in this passage to
4:39
prove his point again we were talking
4:41
about the contention of faith how faith
4:44
contains
4:45
so now the thing is this like
4:47
we don't our faith that we we have in
4:50
god is a faith that eventually we
4:52
triumph over evil and the forces of
4:54
darkness because god is the author of
4:57
our faith and jesus said somewhere
4:58
because i overcame you also overcome he
5:01
overcame death all right so in verse 32
5:04
to 34
5:05
the writer is gonna mention like several
5:08
like familiar faces
5:10
of on the faith we talked about barack
5:13
and gideon samson jefftha david and
5:15
samuel okay so if you look at all these
5:17
characters very carefully you'll find
5:19
out that they really triumphed through
5:21
their life okay so i'm gonna start with
5:24
gideon
5:25
so gideon's called and victorious defeat
5:28
of the media night is recorded in judges
5:30
six
5:31
and all the way through chapter seven
5:33
verse 25 i'm not gonna read the entire
5:35
story because of time
5:37
but at that time at the time of gideon
5:39
the people of god were living in very
5:41
precarious times they were afraid they
5:43
were hiding in caves and stuff like that
5:45
and then the angel of the lord appears
5:48
to get in
5:49
and if you look at chapter six
5:51
especially verses 15 to 16 listen to
5:54
what the angel of the lord says to
5:55
gideon if you go to verse 15 and 16 of
5:58
chapter 6 he says and he said to him
6:02
please lord how can i save israel behold
6:05
my clan is the weakest in manasseh and i
6:08
am the least in my father's house and
6:10
the lord said to him but i will be with
6:12
you and you shall strike the midianites
6:15
as one man so the angel of the lord
6:17
appears to to get in and tells them oh
6:19
mighty warriors go and save israel and
6:22
so gideon turns around he goes hold on a
6:24
second i can't do this
6:26
and the angel of the lord tells him hey
6:29
i will be with you and you shall you
6:30
shall strike the media knight as one man
6:34
see gideon didn't have an exalted view
6:36
of himself that is humility and that's
6:38
where we all need to start and he knew
6:41
that there was no way he could defeat
6:43
the midianite but the lord told him
6:46
but i will be with you and you shall
6:49
strike the media knight as one man see
6:53
even after those reassuring words
6:55
gideon didn't respond like positive
6:58
positively right away
6:59
he still wanted to test what he was
7:02
hearing because he wanted to make sure
7:04
that the individual who he had
7:05
encountered was actually the angel of
7:07
the lord he wasn't just account of it
7:10
see the angel of the lord was patient
7:12
with gideon and he granted uh gideon
7:14
request and gideon grew to trust in the
7:16
lord
7:17
so he he eventually defeated the media
7:19
knight
7:20
and he only used like 300 men according
7:23
to the word of god and he gave glory to
7:26
the lord by what he did see what can we
7:29
learn from gideon see there is a
7:31
difference between testing in unbelief
7:34
and testing for confirmation see when
7:36
gideon tested he said hey make make uh i
7:40
want to make sure this is the lord
7:41
speaking to me so he went on to
7:44
ask the lord to confirm that this was
7:46
actually god speaking and god uh the
7:48
angel of the lord actually confirmed it
7:50
i don't want to read the entire account
7:52
but you know about gideon so when gideon
7:54
was asking he was asking for
7:56
confirmation he wasn't testing god
7:58
because we are told in scripture do not
8:00
test the lord so he didn't test the
8:02
angel of the lord in unbelief but he
8:04
tested for confirmation so that's
8:06
something that we need to learn from
8:08
there
8:09
okay so gideon was weak on his own this
8:11
is just the truth he couldn't defeat the
8:13
media knight they were too weak
8:14
but he triumphed with god
8:17
working in him let me say that again
8:20
gideon triumphed because god was working
8:23
in him and through him to accomplish
8:25
god's own purpose so for the initial
8:28
heroes of this uh story
8:31
i wonder how they responded like to
8:33
gideon's account
8:35
they were being persecuted and just like
8:37
the people in gideon's time
8:39
like they were wondering are we ever
8:40
going to be rescued now i don't know how
8:42
that rescue would look like for people
8:44
like like like those people at the time
8:46
of uh of the book of hebrews i don't
8:48
know how the rescue came about
8:51
but the story is here to remind us that
8:53
even in the midst of difficult times
8:55
god is still sovereign and in gideon's
8:58
time they obtained victory because
8:59
eventually the people of israel defeated
9:01
the media knights well we're going to
9:03
find out what happens next
9:05
i don't want to spoil the entire passage
9:07
because i want to go to the end so we
9:09
can get a good conclusion so let's go to
9:11
the next person so the next one is
9:13
mentioned is barack or barack
9:16
so the account is recorded in georges 4
9:19
verse 1 all the way to chapter 5 verse
9:21
31. so barack won a resounding victory
9:24
over sisera and shisera was another
9:28
general but barack needed the help of
9:30
deborah she was a prophetess to help him
9:33
to to reassure him because he was afraid
9:35
to go
9:36
and then the next person was the uh
9:38
samson so the account of samsung is
9:40
familiar like to a lot of us like if you
9:42
go to judges 13 and 16 through 16 the
9:45
whole account is given to us so we know
9:47
about samsung he was given supernatural
9:49
abilities and he misused them on several
9:53
occasions
9:54
and most of us wouldn't call like
9:56
samsung and godly man because he yielded
9:58
to his fleshly appetites
10:00
too often he loved women and he loved
10:03
like sexual
10:05
uh appetite and stuff like that but sam
10:08
samson was supposed to be a nazirite
10:10
different from nazarene which is the
10:12
people that live in nazareth so a
10:14
nazarite which meant he was dedicated to
10:16
god and was never to cut his hair or
10:18
drink fermented drinks so that was the
10:22
nazarite vow so samson was not supposed
10:25
to do that but he often
10:27
gave into the pressures around him
10:30
so he failed to restrain his flesh and
10:32
that we know he gave into lust for the
10:34
most part and god eventually humbled him
10:36
toward the end of his life and he
10:38
eventually repented of his sinful
10:40
lifestyle and gave his life to defeat
10:43
the enemies of god the philistines at
10:45
the time so he actually went into the
10:47
temple because they they gouged his eyes
10:49
out so he went into the temple and
10:51
eventually he was sitting in the pillar
10:53
the temple of the philistines and he
10:54
asked the lord for one time to give him
10:56
strength and to he repented and
10:58
eventually he pulled down the pillars
11:01
and his strength was given back to him
11:02
and he killed more people in his death
11:05
than he had killed when he was alive so
11:07
samson eventually
11:09
triumphed in death
11:11
he eventually repented however we must
11:13
not conclude that believers today can
11:15
lead like a double life and accept
11:17
expect uh to be like samsung that's not
11:19
what we're supposed to do so we can't
11:21
expect to leave like a double life and
11:23
enjoy god's blessing and if you go to
11:26
chapter 12 you're going to find out
11:28
quickly that god will discipline you so
11:30
we're going to get to that next uh maybe
11:32
in a couple of weeks
11:33
now jeff the story is also fascinating
11:36
so he's in george 11 and he begins it
11:39
begins with the following verse the
11:40
scripture says now jephthah the
11:43
gileadite was a mighty warrior but he
11:45
was the son of a prostitute
11:48
so again there's a reason why the
11:49
scripture tells us that
11:51
gilead was the father of jephthah so
11:53
jephthah was probably called the bastard
11:56
they probably used all kind of names on
11:57
him and he was a reject of the society
11:59
that he lived in and was banned by his
12:02
own half brothers
12:04
because they didn't see him as being
12:06
born from a legitimate relationship
12:08
so he had everything going against him
12:11
yet this is the man that god used to
12:13
deliver his people from the oppressors
12:16
so again the ammonites at the time so
12:18
god used gideon
12:20
gideon he used samson he used barack he
12:23
used um
12:25
jefftha and all these things are here to
12:27
to to remind us of the triumph of faith
12:30
but we're going to see something
12:32
interesting
12:33
now
12:34
we can't like explore all these people
12:36
because there's a lot of stories given
12:38
to us we know about like david and
12:40
samuels david david killed goliath we
12:42
know about the story okay and in
12:44
daniel's case he was in a den and the he
12:48
was put in the den of lions and the
12:49
lions and eat him so we also know that
12:52
story is very familiar and then that
12:53
daniel also had three friends shadrach
12:56
meshach and abednego and they overcame a
12:58
fiery furnace
13:00
and then we also know the story of the
13:02
two women's in the book of kings the
13:03
first one whose son died and and she was
13:06
again uh she was a widow and she was not
13:09
she was a gentile widow and then elijah
13:11
came into her house to live there and he
13:13
had her son died and he brought him back
13:15
to life and then another story is given
13:17
to us in the book of
13:18
second kings verse 4 chapter 4 verse 18
13:21
to 37. there's another woman there whose
13:23
son dies and then elijah brings him back
13:25
to life so there's all these examples of
13:28
the triumph of faith in in in it says
13:30
that in faith when you have faith and
13:33
this type of faith that they displayed
13:34
they were they were triumphant victories
13:36
those are like beautiful stories those
13:38
are like triumphs that are spectacular
13:41
so
13:42
the thing is this like from all these
13:43
examples we see miraculous triumphs of
13:47
faith and this can be very attractive
13:49
to people who are caught up in miracles
13:52
signs and wonders
13:54
you see there's a group of people
13:55
now in our day and age that are
13:57
attracted to this kind of stuff where
13:59
they they claim where god is going to
14:01
give you victory you maybe you have
14:03
cancer you have a terminal illness and
14:05
they say well god say that he will heal
14:07
you by the stripe of christ we are
14:09
healed and they claim these promises and
14:11
sometimes maybe god is speaking to them
14:13
or through them but sometimes he may
14:15
just be wishful thinking because
14:17
sometimes people are not delivered from
14:19
their diseases they die
14:21
so what do we say do we say that they
14:23
didn't have enough faith the thing is we
14:25
if we have a misunderstanding or we
14:27
don't have a good grasp of what faith
14:29
means in those cases
14:31
we can
14:32
like we can pretty much spread a false
14:34
message see everyone wants to be a hero
14:37
like david and defeat a giant like alive
14:39
everybody loves that kind of story and
14:41
i'm sure like the initial like readers
14:43
of the author were also looking to
14:46
triumph over their persecutors in a
14:47
similar manner
14:49
and i believe that the writer
14:50
anticipated that he knew listen i'm
14:52
giving them like stories of miraculous
14:54
escapes and miraculous victories and all
14:57
these tribes of people dying and was
14:59
being resurrected david killing goliath
15:02
samuel and his whole entire thing where
15:04
he defeated the philistines and then uh
15:06
shadrach meshach and abednego and then
15:09
and being thrown into the fire and not
15:11
burning and then uh daniel being thrown
15:14
into the lion's den and not not being
15:16
dead so these kind of stuff are
15:17
attracting attractive to people even i
15:20
like those things because i wanna i
15:21
wanna i wanna experience that kind of
15:23
stuff
15:24
and the writer knows listen i want to
15:26
make sure they understand something
15:27
because there's a dichotomy there's like
15:29
a difference because sometimes god
15:31
delivers but sometimes he doesn't does
15:33
that mean that we have failed or does
15:35
that mean that we don't have enough
15:37
faith this is why we died or this is why
15:39
our diseases are not healed he he knew
15:41
that the writer knew that because these
15:43
people were being persecuted so he
15:45
wanted to make sure his message was
15:47
complete so let's listen to what he says
15:49
as he shift gear in chapter in verse 35
15:52
to 38 listen to what he says in verse 35
15:55
women
15:56
received back their death by
15:58
resurrection and then he shifts gear
16:00
here he goes
16:01
somewhere tortured
16:03
refusing to accept release so that they
16:06
might rise again to a better life
16:09
others suffered mocking and flogging and
16:12
even chains and imprisonment
16:14
imprisonment they were stoned they were
16:16
sawn in two they were killed with a
16:18
sword they went about in skins of ships
16:21
and goods destitute afflicted mistreated
16:25
of whom the world was not worthy
16:28
wandering about in deserts and mountains
16:30
and in dance and caves of the earth see
16:34
what can we take away from these verses
16:37
not
16:38
all men and women of faith experience
16:41
miraculous deliverance
16:43
it's not going to happen to everybody
16:45
see some experience signs and wonders
16:48
and supernatural rescue from the lord
16:50
while others were killed they suffered
16:53
they were mocked they were flogged they
16:56
were chained they were imprisoned okay
16:59
so this is a pattern that the writers
17:00
are has
17:02
like established earlier in in in this
17:04
chapter
17:06
because you mentioned the account of
17:07
able and and and him being killed for
17:10
his faith but in the same token enoch
17:13
did not even experience death so there's
17:15
always that difference there because the
17:18
writer like of the book of hebrews he
17:20
recalls the fact that many unknown men
17:22
and women of faith were not delivered
17:24
from difficult circumstances why
17:28
it doesn't mean that just because you
17:29
believe in god and you believe in jesus
17:31
you're going to be delivered according
17:33
to what you think it should be see
17:36
god was still pleased with these people
17:37
the same way god said that he was
17:39
pleased with abel but this is why he
17:41
accepted abel's sacrifice but abel still
17:44
died and the scripture tells us that
17:46
even though he died
17:48
through faith he still speaks
17:50
in the sense that you can be killed
17:53
because of persecution but that doesn't
17:54
mean that god has abandoned you or you
17:56
don't have faith or that doesn't mean
17:58
that your faith did not triumph because
18:00
if you think about stephen the first
18:02
martyr he was stoned to death
18:04
james the brother of john was
18:07
his throat got slit by herod
18:10
and then john the baptist got
18:11
decapitated
18:13
and our lord jesus himself
18:15
in his humanity
18:16
suffered death but eventually what
18:18
triumphed over death and that's the key
18:20
point see in daniel 3 verse 16 to 18 we
18:24
read the following account
18:26
from shadrach meshach and abednego the
18:29
scripture says
18:30
o
18:31
nebuchadnezzar we have no need to answer
18:34
you in this matter if this be so our god
18:37
whom we serve is able to deliver us from
18:40
the burning fiery furnace and he will
18:43
deliver our evil he will deliver us out
18:46
of your hand or king but if not
18:49
listen to that if not
18:51
be known to you o kingdom we will not
18:53
serve your gods or worship the golden
18:56
image that you have set up so basically
18:58
this is what they are saying to
19:00
nebuchadnezzar they knew that god was
19:02
able to deliver them
19:04
but god prompted them to add another
19:07
powerful word to their testimony
19:10
and they said in verse 18
19:12
but if not
19:14
in other words even if god does not does
19:16
not deliver us even if god permits that
19:19
we perish in this fiery furnace
19:21
understand that we will not relinquish
19:23
and abandon our worship of him
19:25
they are basically telling tell
19:27
nebuchadnezzar yes god is able to rescue
19:30
us god is sovereign
19:32
and he will deliver us but we want you
19:33
to know something nebuchadnezzar even if
19:36
it doesn't deliver let it be known to
19:38
you that we will not relinquish or
19:40
abandon what we believe in because we
19:42
know that this is the truth and why do
19:44
they say that
19:46
it's because there is something greater
19:48
than the immediate see if before you go
19:51
on and think that you can do this on
19:53
your own like you can be like uh
19:55
shadrach meshach and abednego let me
19:57
stop you for a second because the only
19:59
way
20:00
shadrach meshach and abednego were able
20:02
to make such a bold statement is by
20:04
faith in a sense that god himself
20:07
enabled them to be not afraid
20:09
okay and scripture tells us that it is
20:11
god who does what who works in us both
20:14
to will and act according to his purpose
20:17
so in your mind what do you think the
20:20
writer is trying to teach
20:21
his readers and us today
20:24
that's what we need to figure out see
20:25
everything has to do with the glory of
20:27
the lord
20:28
let me say that again
20:30
everything has to do with the glory of
20:32
the lord if god
20:34
is glorified by delivering his people
20:36
then he will and if he's if he sees it
20:39
fit to be glorified by not delivering
20:42
his people then he will do that in a
20:44
sense that if if he fits his purpose to
20:46
deliver you from whatever you're going
20:48
through he will and if he fits his
20:49
purpose not to deliver you
20:51
then and if that glorifies him then
20:53
that's what god is going to do
20:55
and it says that it is god's glory
20:57
that's at stake if god is glorified by
21:00
your deliverance and he will deliver but
21:01
if he's glorified by your death and my
21:03
death am i suffering then that's what's
21:05
going to happen so it's not up to me but
21:08
the good news is that in either cases
21:10
god
21:11
never
21:12
abandons his people
21:14
no matter what happened
21:15
god never
21:17
ever abandons his people
21:19
he is with his saint whether in life or
21:21
in death and as mentioned in verse 38
21:24
the scripture says of whom the world was
21:26
not worthy so we must leave like abraham
21:30
isaac jacob who are doing what they were
21:32
looking forward to the city of god
21:35
see while we are on earth our chief
21:37
purpose is to what to glorify god in our
21:39
lives and then god will be glorified how
21:42
he sees fit in our lives it is sometimes
21:44
it is through our suffering and other
21:46
times through our deliverance from
21:48
suffering so basically it is not up to
21:51
me it is not up to you it is up to god
21:53
who decides how he sees it fit in our
21:55
lives so just because god doesn't
21:57
deliver somebody from a certain uh
22:00
situation it doesn't mean that god has
22:01
abandoned or they've they've been
22:03
defeated now because at that moment it
22:06
meant that it was better for god if it
22:08
was better for them to suffer or to die
22:10
because that glorified got better and if
22:12
you look at the scriptures we know the
22:14
emperor nero what did he do to
22:16
christians he lit them as torches in his
22:18
garden in his in his yard and some of
22:20
them he had
22:21
animal skins put over them and they went
22:23
people were hunting shooting them with
22:25
with uh um
22:27
arrows and stuff like that and they were
22:28
basically
22:29
used as human torches but god was
22:32
glorified because guess what
22:34
when they were suffering a lot of people
22:36
went through other cities and the gospel
22:37
was spread
22:38
so the grace of god and the glory the
22:41
glory of god cannot be changed even in
22:43
our sufferings there is still glory
22:46
so i'm not saying i'm gonna go look for
22:48
proud problems i want to be persecuted
22:50
because god is going to be glorified
22:52
through my persecution but if that's the
22:54
way it's going to be then i can't stop
22:56
it so god gives us the strength to
22:59
sustain to be sustained through our
23:02
whatever we go through because he says
23:04
that he will not let us be tempted
23:05
beyond our ability be on the ability to
23:08
bear but with every temptation he'll
23:10
make a fear of escape that you may be
23:11
bearable so
23:13
my prayer is that
23:15
i'm praying that god gives me the
23:17
strength for whatever he's preparing me
23:18
for
23:19
there's been tough times in my life and
23:20
i'm sure there's been tough times in
23:22
your life but if you look close enough
23:25
god was faithful even in those times
23:28
because he was he was being glorified
23:30
through your suffering the scripture
23:32
tells us that
23:33
it is god who works in us again both to
23:35
will and act according to his good
23:37
purpose and we are like jaws of clay
23:40
and the jaws of clay have to be broken
23:41
for what so that the light that's under
23:44
the light that stains concealed may be
23:45
revealed so through our suffering
23:47
through through the squeezing of our
23:49
lives the glory of god is revealed
23:52
so this is how it happens we have to be
23:54
pressed
23:56
and in verse verses 39 to 40 we read the
23:58
following and all these though commanded
24:01
through their faith did not received
24:03
what was promised since god had provided
24:05
something better for us that apart from
24:07
us they should not be made perfect
24:09
so basically we have to remember
24:12
who the writer was primarily addressing
24:14
in his letter see in their wariness they
24:17
were attempted to shrink back to the old
24:19
ways right and one fundamental truth the
24:22
writer has presented in this chapter is
24:24
the sovereignty of god
24:26
see he's able to deliver to deliver us
24:28
from any circumstances because he's all
24:30
powerful there's none like god so in the
24:32
case of the readers they were still
24:34
being persecuted and could have doubted
24:36
the power of god and the promises of god
24:39
but faith
24:41
looks to the future
24:42
for that is where the greatest rewards
24:44
are found again faith looks to the
24:47
future for that is where the greatest
24:49
reward are found
24:51
see our ultimate destination is the city
24:54
of god and as mentioned in our previous
24:57
presentations the antidote to seeking
24:59
comfort on the side of eternity is
25:01
looking what forward to the city of god
25:04
like the saints of old like abraham
25:06
isaac and jacob the scripture tells us
25:08
that they were looking forward to the
25:09
city of god so what are you looking
25:10
forward to what am i looking forward to
25:13
again if you go to colossians three
25:15
verses one to four we'll
25:17
we read the following if then listen if
25:20
then you have been raised with christ
25:23
seek the things that are above where
25:25
christ is seated at the right hand of
25:28
god set your minds on things that are
25:30
above not on things that are on earth
25:33
for you have died and your life is
25:35
hidden with christ and god when christ
25:37
lose your life appears
25:39
then you will also appear with him in
25:42
glory
25:43
and this is what the word of god tells
25:44
us
25:45
so where are you
25:48
fixing your gaze are you fixing your
25:49
gaze on the immediate
25:51
the comfort now or are you fixing your
25:53
gaze on the things that are above where
25:55
your life is where christ is seated at
25:56
the right hand of god where your real
25:59
life is hidden see right now we're still
26:01
living in in this uh old nature and
26:03
there's still a struggle with the sinful
26:05
nature and the spiritual nature the new
26:08
nature the new self
26:09
right there's still a struggle every day
26:11
we struggle through it because the
26:13
scripture tells us in galatians that the
26:15
things of the flesh are warning against
26:17
the things of the spirit and there's
26:19
that that that constant clash to keep us
26:21
from doing what we want
26:23
like sometimes i get up and all i want
26:25
to do is just do my own thing but the
26:27
scripture tells us that i have died and
26:29
i no longer believe what christ lives in
26:31
me so the life that i live now i live by
26:34
what faith in the son of god will give
26:36
himself up for me
26:37
not so that i live my life again for
26:39
myself but i live for him
26:41
so meaning i am dead the old nature is
26:45
gone but that old nature doesn't go away
26:47
without a fight
26:48
so therefore we read in romans 7 that is
26:51
still that clash between the old nature
26:53
and the new nature but eventually when
26:56
christ come back if i die before he
26:58
comes back or when he comes if i'm alive
27:00
when he comes back
27:01
our bodies will be transformed and from
27:03
then on everything that i'm going to
27:05
want to do is serve god with my whole
27:07
life because that's what we read in
27:09
deuteronomy 6 you shall love the lord
27:11
your god with all your heart all your
27:13
mind all your soul this is the kind of
27:14
dedication this is the kind of life that
27:16
god wants us to live and no one can do
27:17
that
27:18
because of the sinful nature so
27:21
god demands ultimate perfection
27:24
and this is why there's none
27:26
righteous no no one
27:28
none righteous
27:30
and thanks be to god
27:32
so faithful triumph eventually and and
27:34
this is all the message in chapter 11.
27:36
so in chapter 12 we're going to begin
27:38
with the discipline of the lord because
27:39
he's been talking about faith now for
27:42
for faith to be actual for faith to be
27:44
strength uh strong in our lives god has
27:46
to disciplines us he has to discipline
27:48
us so we're going to read and we're
27:50
going to see how god disciplines his
27:51
people all right so have a wonderful day
27:54
and i'll see you next time thank you
