0:00
Good evening. Uh it's about 1210, right?
0:05
So it's good evening. So um I wanted to
0:07
follow up on a topic that I talked about
0:09
last week. We talked about the struggle
0:11
between the old nature and the new
0:13
nature. So now we're going to talk about
0:15
Jesus Christ humility and the
0:17
accumulation of that is what we call the
0:20
kinosis. K E N O S I S. So why do I want
0:23
to talk about it? about um five days
0:26
ago, my wife and I were talking and then
0:29
we uh she said she was talking about
0:32
going to the beach and I was like, "You
0:34
say the same thing every year." And she
0:36
proceeded to say to me, "Well, I do I
0:39
say this I say this the same thing every
0:40
year because I put everybody else ahead
0:42
of myself." So, I'm always putting
0:45
everybody else's needs ahead of mine.
0:47
And he made me think about uh the Kosis
0:50
and Christ humility. So, we're going to
0:52
talk about that today. And now the
0:54
kinesis itself has caused a lot of
0:56
controversies. So to define it, I'm not
0:59
going to get into the controversies. So
1:01
what I'm going to do is I'm going to
1:02
read the scripture and we're going to
1:03
let the the scripture be its own
1:05
interpreter. That's the best way to to
1:07
to interpret the passage is to let the
1:10
Bible itself be its own interpreter. God
1:13
does not need me to defend him. God can
1:15
defend himself by the way of scripture.
1:19
So we're going to use the scripture. Hi
1:20
Sidell, I just see you join. Good. I'm
1:22
glad you're here and I want you to hear
1:23
the word of God. All right. So, we're
1:25
going to go to uh Philippians 2 and I'm
1:28
going to read uh uh I'm going to read
1:31
starting off verse three of Philippians
1:32
2. So, the scripture says here, "Do
1:35
nothing from selfish ambition or vain
1:39
But in humility, right, count others
1:43
more significant than yourselves. Let
1:45
each of you look not only to his own
1:47
interest but also to the interest of
1:49
others. Have this mind among yourselves,
1:52
which is yours in Christ Jesus, who
1:55
though he was in the form of God, did
1:58
not count or consider equality with God
2:01
a thing to be grasped, but emptied
2:03
himself by taking the form of a servant.
2:08
Being born in the likeness of man and
2:10
being found in human form, he humbled
2:13
himself by becoming obedient to the
2:14
point of death, even death on a cross.
2:17
eyes. Th Therefore, God has ex highly
2:21
exalted him and bestowed upon him the
2:23
name that is above every name, so that
2:25
at the name of Jesus Christ, every knee
2:27
should bow in heaven and on earth and
2:30
under the earth, and every tongue
2:31
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the
2:34
glory of God the Father. So Paul is
2:36
talking to the Philippians here and he's
2:38
telling them to be humble and to do
2:39
nothing out of selfish ambition or vain
2:42
conceit which is contrary to what we see
2:44
in our day and age. With the advent of
2:46
social media, selfies have become
2:48
something where you promote yourself
2:50
constantly. It's all about your brand,
2:52
right? It's all about my brain. I want
2:53
to look a certain way. So humility is
2:56
something that is foreign to the best of
2:57
us. Even as Christians, we struggle with
2:59
this idea of humility. But Jesus Christ
3:02
shows the ultimate humility by doing
3:05
what we call the kinosis. Now the
3:06
kinosis is basically Jesus Christ
3:09
emptied himself by taking on the human
3:14
flesh. Meaning the divine nature always
3:17
existed. Jesus Christ is the son of God.
3:19
Meaning he is God right? But by adding
3:22
the human nature what he did was he
3:24
emptied himself. So basically he limited
3:26
himself by becoming a human. He no
3:29
longer had what you call the
3:30
omnipotence, right? The omnipresent and
3:33
all the divine attributes. So the human
3:35
nature was truly human. It wasn't like
3:37
he was a demi god or demi man. He was
3:40
truly human and truly god in a sense
3:42
that we have two natures. We call that a
3:45
hypoatic union. The divine nature is
3:47
fully divine and the human nature is
3:48
fully human. So when Jesus Christ says
3:51
that I am thirsty, he's truly thirsty.
3:54
Now God we know can't thirst. God cannot
3:57
get tired. Jesus got tired. Jesus had to
3:59
grow up. He was a baby and he had to
4:01
learn how to walk. He had to learn how
4:03
to speak. He had to learn the
4:04
scriptures. So all of that is an empty
4:07
of himself. Basically, the scripture
4:09
tells us here that we have to be like
4:11
Christ. In what way? He did not count
4:14
equality with God a thing to be grasped.
4:17
He did not hold on to it so firmly in a
4:20
sense of which if you literally give me
4:24
the ability to like be divine, I will
4:27
probably kill half of the population.
4:29
Why am I saying that? Is because of my
4:31
my lack of humility. That's why the way
4:33
we humans are. So if you have a little
4:35
bit of something, we want to utilize it
4:38
to self-promote. Jesus did not do that.
4:41
He was born in a manger.
4:44
He was born in a manger, right? The
4:48
divine son of God took upon human nature
4:51
and was born in a manger. Let that sink
4:53
in a little bit. If I'm royalty, I don't
4:56
want to be born in a manger. But the
4:58
scripture says he did not count equality
5:00
with God, a thing to be grasped. He did
5:02
not hold on to that as something firm
5:04
like listen, I'm I'm the son of God. I'm
5:07
going to use this so firmly. No, the
5:09
scripture say he emptied himself.
5:14
When Jesus says that I'm I'm thirsty or
5:17
he's hungry, when he was tempted by the
5:21
in 40 days, he didn't eat, right? And
5:24
the devil comes and the devil says to
5:26
Jesus, "If you are the son of God, tell
5:28
the stones to be turned into bread."
5:29
What does Jesus say to him? Man does not
5:32
live by bread alone, but by every word
5:33
that proceeds from the mouth of God.
5:36
Now put me in that position as a human.
5:39
If I know that I can turn this bread
5:40
into these stones into bread, I'm going
5:42
to do that. But the scripture tells us
5:44
he did not count equality with God a
5:46
thing to be grasped. Being in very
5:48
nature God, meaning Jesus was God, truly
5:51
God, but by adding the human human
5:58
pretty much is the epitome of his um
6:03
Listen to the scripture again.
6:05
Have this man among yourselves which is
6:08
yours in Christ Jesus who though he was
6:11
in very nature God did not count
6:14
equality with God a thing to be grasped
6:17
a thing to hold on to something that he
6:20
he didn't hold on to that deity
6:23
but he says he emptied himself how did
6:25
he empty himself by taking the form of a
6:29
servant the servant of God the lamb of
6:32
God being born in the lik likeness of
6:35
men. So by taking the human nature, this
6:37
is the ultimate sign of humility because
6:40
by taking a human nature, he became like
6:43
one of us without the sin nature. See,
6:46
you and I were born with Adamic nature.
6:48
We by nature are objects of wrath. We
6:50
love sin. But Jesus was not born like
6:53
that. He was a human without the sinful
6:55
nature. And being found in human
6:57
likeness, the scripture says, he humbled
7:01
by doing that already. Already, right?
7:03
But then the scripture says that by
7:05
becoming obedient to the plan of death,
7:08
he became obedient to the father to the
7:10
point of dying even death on a cross.
7:12
Now the death on the cross was
7:14
ultimately uh it was painful physically
7:18
painful. It was also um shameful because
7:22
he was naked on the cross. Now remember
7:24
what Jesus said on the cross, father why
7:28
thou forsaken me? The human nature was
7:31
wailing. And before he went to the
7:33
cross, remember what happened in the
7:34
garden of Gethsemane? He say in the
7:36
garden of Gethsemane, right? What did he
7:38
say? Father, take this cup from me. If
7:42
it is possible, yet not my will, but thy
7:44
will be done. At that moment, he could
7:46
have been like, you know what? Forget
7:48
these humans. I'm not going to die for
7:49
them. They are ungrateful. But he did
7:51
not do that. He did not count equality
7:53
with God a thing to be grasped. Right?
7:55
Even when they came to arrest him, what
7:57
what happened when the people came? And
7:59
they fell down to the ground twice. He
8:01
said, "Whom you seek?" And they said,
8:03
"Jesus of Nazareth," he say, "I am he."
8:05
And he fell to the ground. Right? And
8:07
when Peter cuts off the ear of one of
8:09
the servants, what does Jesus say to
8:11
him? Don't you think I can call I can
8:13
call a legion of angels to come and
8:15
deliver me. But scripture has to be
8:17
fulfilled. Meaning he could have
8:19
vaporized all these people in a split
8:21
second. All he had to do was say the
8:23
word and it would have been vaporized.
8:24
But he did not do that. The scriptures
8:27
say he became obedient to the point of
8:28
obedient to death on the cross. And as a
8:31
result of that, the scripture tells us
8:34
that God gave the name that is above
8:36
every name. What is that name? The name
8:40
Now God has endowed the human nature the
8:43
name Lord. So this is why the scripture
8:44
tells us that he sit at the right hand
8:46
of God. In Psalm 20 uh 24, Psalm 124,
8:50
the scripture tells us, "Lift up your
8:52
gates, oh you g lift up your your gates,
8:54
oh you oh lift up your gates, right? Oh
8:58
you heavens, so that the king of glory
9:00
may come in." When he ascended the
9:02
heaven, he was endowed with this. God
9:05
gave him the name that is above every
9:06
name. This is why Jesus is the Lord.
9:09
Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God
9:11
the Father. He is Lord on heaven and on
9:14
earth and under the earth. All must obey
9:16
him. every knee would bow whether you
9:18
like it or not. You will have to bow
9:20
when Jesus comes back.
9:23
Now, there's two things. You can either
9:24
bow as a loving servant that loves your
9:27
your Lord or you can bow as someone that
9:29
hates him. But you still have to bow
9:34
Now, this is also teaching us about the
9:36
ultimate humility. Humility is lacking
9:40
Even though we have a new nature as
9:42
believers, as born again Christians, we
9:44
still struggle with the old nature. So
9:47
the new nature puts to death the the
9:49
lack of humility in the old nature. And
9:52
this is what the scripture is telling
9:53
us. Paul wants us to be like Christ. He
9:56
he wants us to have the mind of Christ.
9:58
In what way? By emptying ourself of all
10:01
the things that we think we are and this
10:04
and that. No, put it aside. Put it
10:08
Do not hold on to to those things. Let
10:11
God be fully dwelling in you. The
10:13
scripture tells us in Colossians to do
10:17
To allow Christ to live in us by his
10:20
Holy Spirit. So when the Holy Spirit
10:22
guides you, you begin to exude that type
10:24
of humility. This is called having what
10:27
we call again meekness, power under
10:30
control. And Jesus is the ultimate sign
10:33
of power under control. We have to have
10:35
that. So that's all for today. So the
10:38
kinosis is Jesus emptying himself in
10:41
what way? By becoming a human. Okay. So
10:43
one now that you know what it is. If
10:45
somebody gives you a false idea of
10:47
kinosis, you can reject it. Okay? And
10:49
you can go back to scripture and let the
10:51
scripture be its own interpreter. That's
10:53
all I wanted to say today. Sidel thank
10:55
you for being part of this. Have a
10:57
wonderful day and I'll see you next
