hello good morning this is ty EBIT is
0:02
calm and today we're going to talk about
0:05
a story that took place in the Old
0:07
Testament in Leviticus tain verse 1 to 3
0:10
if you look at my title he says what can
0:13
we learn from native and I by whose
0:16
death now I know and this is a tough
0:19
topic to talk about but every now and
0:22
then there are stories that are recorded
0:24
for us in the Old Testament or even in
0:27
the new to remind us about the holiness
0:30
of God and how serious he is about
0:33
approaching him with a proper attitude
0:35
so let me go into the background and
0:39
give you a quick background of what
0:41
we're gonna be talking about and then
0:43
we're gonna dive into the topic and then
0:46
eventually we're gonna make some
0:47
observations and draw our conclusions so
0:50
let's do that now the background if you
0:54
look at my screen native Ana by who
0:57
we're the oldest sons of Aaron and they
1:01
were appointed by God as priests
1:03
alongside Aaron and were eventually to
1:06
replace him I still need a priest so
1:09
they were leaders and were supposed to
1:11
leave exemplary lives and God takes
1:15
leadership very seriously and as an
1:18
unfortunate event of befalls made up in
1:20
a battle they both die because they
1:23
offer on authorized fire to the Lord now
1:27
the event is recorded for us in
1:29
Leviticus stayin verse 1 2 3 so we are
1:32
going to be diving into the story and
1:34
make some observations and draw the
1:36
implications for us today
1:38
so let's go and read the event in
1:41
Scripture now made up and I by who if
1:45
you follow my screen okay now Nadav and
1:47
Avihu the sons of Aaron each took his
1:50
censer and put fire in it and laid
1:53
incense on it and offered unauthorized
1:57
fire before the Lord which he had not
2:00
commanded them and fire came out from
2:03
before the Lord and consumed them and
2:06
they died before the Lord the Moses said
2:09
to Aaron this is what the Lord has said
2:13
among those who are near me will be
2:16
sanctified before all the people I will
2:20
be glorified and Aaron held his peace
2:24
meaning Aaron said nothing now let's try
2:30
and unpack this a little bit now the
2:32
keywords and phrases in the verses above
2:37
unauthorized and which he had not
2:40
commended them so native and ibang who
2:44
knew exactly what the Lord had
2:46
prescribed when he came down to
2:48
worshiping yet they chose to modify and
2:52
perform the operation according to their
2:54
own counsel and he cost them their lives
2:57
so what is this teaching us about proper
3:01
worship and less again consider that now
3:06
our worship like I said on the screen
3:08
needs to be designed to lead us to be in
3:10
awe of God worship is not meant to
3:14
entertain the congregation members or
3:16
visitors it is solely designed to turn
3:19
our focus from ourselves to God this
3:22
isn't a time for us to come and dance
3:24
and enjoy ourselves it is primarily
3:27
meant to keep our eyes on God and fix
3:30
our eyes on his majesty
3:31
now let me make this point clear there
3:34
is nothing wrong with dancing and being
3:36
extra extrovert in worship because King
3:39
David himself did it he was really
3:40
dancing and having dancing and rejoicing
3:44
and worshiping the Lord so there is
3:45
nothing wrong with dancing and enjoying
3:47
yourself while you're worshiping but
3:49
when that when when we fall in love with
3:52
the activity of worship more than
3:56
worshipping God himself then there is a
3:58
problem so let me read that again the
4:01
problem comes when we fall in love with
4:03
the activity of worship rather than
4:07
worshiping God himself what I'm trying
4:10
to say is this when the other stuff
4:14
become more x-ray and more important
4:18
time worshiping God himself then there
4:20
is a problem
4:20
okay so nadir B'nai by who they wanted
4:24
to come up with in
4:26
visions in the worship format but it
4:28
wasn't consistent with the format God
4:31
provided so what we had to do as a
4:34
church is really revisit our worship who
4:37
is it designed so that the congregation
4:40
can fix its eyes on God or has it been
4:43
designed for our own entertainment
4:45
Nanda Baba who thought they could
4:48
improve on worship they don't follow
4:52
God's commands and we have to be very
4:55
careful to learn from this here we have
4:58
to be very careful to do exactly what
5:00
the Lord is saying about worship are we
5:02
here to worship ourselves and worship
5:05
activity of worship or are we here to
5:08
wash it alone so I'll encourage you
5:12
whatever you go to church or if your
5:15
pastor if you a leader worship leader is
5:18
your worship designed to keep the
5:21
condition eyes on the Lord and His
5:23
Majesty or is your worship designed to
5:26
entertain your audience which is the
5:28
people in front of you your audience
5:31
really is God when you come to worship
5:33
your audience is not the congregation
5:35
itself your audience is primarily God so
5:39
when you come to worship and you prepare
5:42
your worship it has to be designed so
5:44
that God is the focus so this is the
5:47
third point the first point is proper
5:49
worship the next one we're going to talk
5:51
about is keeping the command of God
5:55
that's important now scripture says that
5:58
without faith it's impossible to please
6:00
God and faith comes by hearing and
6:03
hearing by the Word of God so the Lord
6:05
had prescribed the proper way to worship
6:09
it but neither when I back we did not
6:12
follow the instructions and prayed for
6:14
it with their own lives the key here is
6:17
keeping the command of the Lord so we
6:20
can look at Saul's story to understand
6:23
what is taking taking place here in
6:25
first on chronicles 10 verse 13 to 14 we
6:28
are told so Saul died for his breach of
6:32
faith
6:33
broke faith with the Lord in that he did
6:36
not keep the command of the Lord and
6:38
also consulted a medium seeking guidance
6:42
he did not seek guidance from the Lord
6:45
therefore the Lord put him to death and
6:47
turned the kingdom over to David the son
6:50
of Jesse the only point drawn here is
6:52
that we must humble ourselves and ask
6:55
the Lord to work in us to will and act
6:58
according to his will or purpose because
7:01
the natural main cannot submit to the
7:03
law of God
7:04
we can't please God in our own strength
7:06
or abilities
7:07
you see Saul couldn't Saul trying to do
7:11
things in his own strength and he
7:13
eventually died Nadab and Abihu try to
7:16
do worship in their own strength and
7:19
they eventually died so our job as
7:22
believers is to humble ourself and ask
7:26
the Lord lead us to keep your command
7:29
lead us to keep your command because we
7:31
can't keep the command of God in our own
7:34
strength this is what scripture says the
7:36
natural man cannot submit to the law of
7:39
God because in Australia own strength we
7:43
try to do things to please ourselves to
7:45
tranel work things in our own abilities
7:48
and this is not what God has prescribed
7:50
he says do things according to my word
7:52
this is what faith comes by hearing and
7:55
hearing by the Word of God
7:57
so even worship has to be consistent
8:00
with what the Spirit of God Himself
8:03
provides for us
8:05
so everything is well staying humble and
8:08
coming under the sovereign hand of the
8:11
Lord even worship prayer everything now
8:16
the next point the holiness of God the
8:21
holiness of God that's important now
8:24
furthermore the account of Nadab and
8:26
Abihu
8:27
has been recorded to remind us of the
8:29
holiness of God and his moral perfection
8:32
scripture says that the soul that sins
8:34
shall die that's recorded in Ezekiel
8:37
18:20 most people read this story and
8:40
think to themselves my god rock God's
8:43
wrath was too severe on Nadab and Abihu
8:46
in the sense that these two young men
8:48
were just being boys and they meant no
8:51
harm
8:52
first of all these two moody holiness of
8:54
God and they also knew the commands of
8:57
the Lord so they had no excuse and these
9:00
stories here the teachers that sin is
9:02
sin whether small or great in God's eyes
9:04
so the littlest transgression deserves
9:08
death in the sight of God the thing is
9:11
this we don't understand God's
9:12
righteousness so we think that there are
9:14
different levels of sins we don't
9:17
understand our sin by definition is a
9:19
breach of faith in other words not
9:22
keeping the command of the Lord in this
9:24
case it was the offering of an
9:26
authorized fire you see God's holiness
9:29
and righteousness we don't understand as
9:32
humans we don't truly understand how
9:34
holy God is because he says the soul
9:37
that sins shall die in a sense that the
9:41
little s transgression is enough to be
9:44
for you to be executed for you and I to
9:46
be executed what God requires of us is
9:49
perfection perfection he knows that we
9:54
can't keep that so therefore he gives us
9:57
he infuses with his own righteousness
9:59
well make no mistakes make no mistakes
10:03
sin is seen in God's eyes we are all
10:07
fallen nature fallen humans right for
10:10
about nature we are all fallen humans
10:12
that doesn't mean that we should take
10:16
God for granite well I'm you know
10:18
because a lot of people say well I'm a
10:19
machinist oh so what God understands God
10:22
is holy he can't tolerate sin he cannot
10:28
because he is holy by Nature so that's
10:30
why he made provisions for us through
10:32
Jesus Christ and this story here is
10:35
shown us the holiness of God God is holy
10:39
the lellison is enough to cut us from
10:42
his presence because the soul that sins
10:44
shall die scripture says whoever keeps
10:47
the whole law and stumbly one point is
10:49
guilty of all there's no little thing
10:52
there's no big thing
10:53
sin is sin in God's eyes and one sin is
10:56
enough to cut you off from his presence
10:58
and for you to be dead
10:59
you are not to be dead I just wanted to
11:02
make sure you understand that point
11:03
because God is holy holy morally perfect
11:08
and also set apart because we can't even
11:11
understand the holiness of God on this
11:13
side of eternity we don't fully
11:14
understand it what it means anyone that
11:18
saw the Lord even Isaiah the prophet
11:20
fell on his knees and say Who I am I
11:26
farce in the Lord because he was our way
11:28
was made aware of his own imperfection
11:31
you see that that's important to
11:34
understand the holiness of God truly
11:36
fully in all his being okay and the next
11:43
one that I wanted to make was the
11:44
patience of God now this story also
11:47
teaches us about the patience of God for
11:50
us today God by nature cannot change so
11:53
we are not to think to take his patience
11:56
for with us today for tolerance for sin
11:59
let me beat that again God by nature
12:02
cannot change so we ought not to take
12:05
his patience with us today for tolerance
12:08
for sin but God is slow to anger and
12:11
abounding in law therefore his patience
12:14
with us given us room to repent which
12:17
ought to make us fall in love with His
12:19
grace even more so let me give you
12:22
Romans 2 verse 2 to 4 to illustrate my
12:24
point here scripture says in Romans 2
12:28
verse 2 for we know that the judgment of
12:30
God we know that the judgment of God
12:33
rightly falls on those who practice such
12:35
things do you suppose oh man you will
12:39
judge those who practice such things
12:41
that yet do them that you'll escape the
12:44
judgment of God or do you presume
12:46
presume on the riches of his kindness
12:49
and forbearance and patience
12:52
not knowing that God's kindness is meant
12:56
to lead you to repentance you see that
13:00
God's kindness is meant to lead you to
13:04
repentance do not presume on the riches
13:07
of his kindness and forbearance
13:08
appraised patience scripture see saying
13:11
don't take God's patience and kindness
13:14
for granted he is giving you room to
13:16
repent is giving you an eye a room to
13:18
repent so stories like this are meant to
13:22
teach us to fear the Lord his wrath is
13:24
real was now God is still the same
13:29
yesterday today and tomorrow he hasn't
13:31
changed it's not like he all of a sudden
13:34
ah he tolerates seeming is okay but he
13:36
is not okay with it he is giving you
13:38
room to repent he's giving me room to
13:41
repent so we ought to really take this
13:43
very seriously so again in closing this
13:48
what I said God is a holy God and he
13:56
requires of us proper worship this is
13:59
the first one that we talk about the
14:00
second is keeping the command of the
14:02
Lord
14:03
the third is holiness and the fourth is
14:07
the patience of God so all these four
14:10
elements a mind to drive us to really
14:13
look to the cross and look to Jesus and
14:15
said lord please help us because we know
14:17
how easy it is for us to fall back into
14:18
sin God made a provision for us through
14:21
Jesus he says if we confess our sins he
14:24
is faithful and just to forgive us and
14:26
cleanse us of all cleanses us of all
14:28
righteousness
14:29
if we fourth if we confess our sins if
14:33
you agree with God that we have sinned
14:35
against him he is faithful and just to
14:36
forgive us of all our sins and cleanse
14:39
us of all unrighteousness so we need to
14:42
really ask the Lord strengthen us and
14:44
give us the power by Holy Spirit to lead
14:47
an exemplary life we're gonna sing us
14:50
that's just human nature but he has made
14:54
a provision and John says my children
14:57
I'll write these things so that you may
14:59
not sin but when you be seen we have an
15:03
advocate Jesus Christ 20-seat for us but
15:07
that is not a license for you to go out
15:09
and do what you want because you're
15:10
gonna suffer the wrath of the Lord so
15:12
this is meant to teach us about the
15:14
holiness of God about keeping his
15:16
command and about understanding his
15:18
grace
15:18
this ought to really make us even fall
15:20
in love more to the Lord with the Lord
15:22
and say we wanna be
15:23
pleasing to you we want to leave by
15:25
faith and this is what God says the
15:28
righteous shall live by faith the
15:30
righteous shall live by every word that
15:32
proceeds from the mouth of God so I will
15:36
exalt you today to really take this
15:37
seriously and ask the Lord to give you
15:39
strength to be a prison vessel for use
15:42
okay so have a wonderful day
