Genesis 15:5-6, Abraham Believed God And He Was Declared Righteous, A Closer Look
Feb 20, 2025
Last week, we took a closer look at Genesis 15:1 , if you didn't get an opportunity to listen to that lecture, I'll invite you to check out the post below

Today we continue our study of the 15th chapter of the book of Genesis, and our focus will be verse 5-6,
5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
These two verses give us a very clear and concise picture of what it means to be called righteous by God himself. The presentation below will attempt to explain what all that means.

hello good morning this is ty he behaves
0:03
calm and today we're gonna continue our
0:05
study on Genesis chapter 15 last week we
0:09
looked at verse 1 in which we talked
0:11
about the promise of God to Abraham in
0:13
the first verse he says our fear not
0:16
Abram I'm your shield your reward shall
0:18
be very great now if you've missed our
0:20
study that I will encourage you to look
0:21
at it I'll provide the link to it in the
0:23
description so make sure you check that
0:25
out now today we're gonna continue with
0:28
Abraham exchange of God and now we're
0:31
gonna look at verse 5 and 6 and these
0:34
are like the most famous verse in the
0:37
whole book of Genesis in my opinion I
0:39
mean we'd be wrong about that but I felt
0:41
like this is just one of the way we
0:44
learn about what it means to know the
0:46
truth so that the truth can set you free
0:48
because Abraham was preached the gospel
0:51
in that chapter and especially in verse
0:53
5 and 6 and we're gonna be looking at it
0:55
today and I will encourage you to get
0:58
all your mind and your energy and focus
1:01
on doubt those two verses okay
1:04
so let's jump into it now in verse 5 and
1:08
6 of Genesis and the Lord brings Abraham
1:11
outside and the following exchange takes
1:13
place and God says to Abram and he
1:17
brought him outside and said look toward
1:19
heaven and Number the Stars if you are
1:23
able to number them then he said to
1:25
Abraham again so shall your offspring be
1:29
and he believed the Lord and he counted
1:32
it to him as righteousness that is the
1:36
most precise and concise way God could
1:40
have taught us the gospel okay
1:43
abraham believed god once the Lord
1:45
Himself preached the gospel to him and
1:48
he gave me a vision of what was to come
1:50
now I wonder why the Lord didn't choose
1:53
the sand of the earth to represent what
1:55
Abraham's descendants were going to be
1:57
like in that particular verse because in
1:59
some other instances God says your
2:02
descendants will be asked numerous as
2:03
the sands of the earth but in this case
2:05
he says to Abram look toward heaven and
2:09
Number the Stars if you are able to
2:12
number them then
2:13
says to him so shall your offspring be
2:16
right now he specifically told Abram to
2:20
look toward heaven basically what he was
2:23
given Abraham an eternal perspective of
2:25
life then he added count the stars as
2:28
your offspring and Abraham understood
2:31
the picture the Lord was painting and
2:33
the book of Hebrews are shared some
2:35
light on that passage in chapter 11
2:37
we're gonna look at chapter 11 we're
2:39
gonna look at verse 9 10 and 12 13 and
2:41
14 - 16
2:42
because it says there by faith he went
2:46
to leave
2:46
thus Abram went to leave in the land of
2:48
promise I was in the foreign foreign
2:51
land living in tanks with Isaac and
2:54
Jacob heirs with him of the same promise
2:57
for he was looking to forward to the
3:00
city that has foundations whose designer
3:03
and builder is God okay let's go on to
3:06
the next slide and then in verse 13 and
3:09
16 we are told these all died in faith
3:13
who Abraham Isaac and Jacob not having
3:17
received the things promised but haven't
3:19
seen them and greeted them from afar and
3:22
having acknowledged that they were
3:24
strangers and Excise on the earth for
3:27
people who speak thus make it clear that
3:30
they are sick in their homeland if they
3:32
had been thinking of darling
3:34
from which they had gone out they will
3:36
have had opportunity to return but as it
3:39
is the desire a better country that is a
3:42
heavenly one therefore God is not
3:46
ashamed to be called their God for he
3:49
has prepared for them a city now Abram
3:51
was heavenly minded since the Lord gave
3:53
me a vision of what was to come so his
3:55
mindset was an eternal one he lived his
3:58
life looking forward to the City of God
4:00
the heavenly kingdom of God so his
4:03
desires were no longer for the things of
4:05
this world temporary things but rather
4:07
only heavenly things and that pleased
4:09
God so Abraham understood the gospel
4:13
even though he didn't have the totality
4:15
of the pieces God enabled him through
4:18
the Holy Spirit to receive his word and
4:20
thus regenerate his heart because no one
4:23
can come to God unless drawn by the
4:24
Spirit of God so we
4:26
the limited data and information Abraham
4:28
received he believed and was counted
4:30
righteous and just like Abraham his
4:33
children which are asked who believed
4:35
just like Abraham we believe in
4:38
accounted righteous the Lord himself
4:40
through his fairies through his spirit
4:43
preaches the gospel to us and enables us
4:45
to receive His Word and complete the
4:47
work of salvation in our hearts this is
4:49
amazing great skies like Abraham Lee
4:52
received just portion of the data he
4:55
didn't know about the resurrection he
4:56
didn't know about the virgin birth he
4:59
didn't have all that it wasn't written
5:00
yet he didn't have everything that we
5:03
have today he didn't have the totality
5:04
of the pieces of the information that we
5:06
have today we have the Old Testament we
5:08
have the promises we have the Prophet we
5:10
have Jesus's life we have all of that
5:14
Abraham did not have that he just had
5:17
bits and pieces of the information just
5:19
a little bit of information but God who
5:23
saves was able to make him righteous
5:25
because he gave the information and
5:26
enabled him through his spirit to
5:28
believe the gospel this is incredible
5:31
like this is totally incredible because
5:34
God is showing that he is the one who
5:36
does the saving he is the one who does
5:38
the preaching of the gospel even though
5:40
sometimes he uses human means like us to
5:43
preach the gospel is ultimately the Holy
5:45
Spirit work that there is the
5:47
regeneration and that changes there are
5:50
the thoughts of the heart and everything
5:52
because Abraham did not have all the
5:54
information that we had yet he believed
5:56
because God Himself preached the gospel
5:58
directly to Abraham he gave him a
6:00
picture of what was to come he said look
6:02
toward heaven he gave him all the
6:04
promises and everyone believed and was
6:06
changed because he was counted righteous
6:09
he received the righteousness that God
6:11
himself applied to Abraham he was
6:15
imputed the righteousness because he
6:17
believed God who makes people righteous
6:19
so Abraham didn't become righteous on
6:21
his own terms he received an alien
6:23
righteousness because God himself say
6:25
you are righteous because I gave you my
6:27
word and through my spirit are allowed
6:29
you to believe now you are my child and
6:32
you are part of the family of God and to
6:34
us is the same way we believe because we
6:36
received the data from God and God
6:38
himself through his spirit
6:40
explain that data to us so our mind can
6:41
respond and say yes Lord we want to we
6:44
want to believe you
6:45
we're gonna believe you because your
6:46
spirit is working in us to will enact
6:48
according to your purpose you see that
6:50
you can know God and not law of God you
6:54
can have all the data and still don't
6:56
believe because you have people today we
6:58
have all the data about the gospel and
7:00
some people don't believe because God
7:01
Himself is the one who does the
7:03
regeneration he changes the attitude of
7:05
your heart
7:05
it changes the disposition of your heart
7:07
for you to receive it everyone we steal
7:10
the bit and believed and today we have
7:13
the totality and so I'm still don't
7:15
believe because God hasn't touched their
7:17
heart yet and God does the choosing
7:19
because he says I will have compassion
7:21
on whom I will have compassion and I'll
7:23
preach the gospel to whomever I want
7:25
so his Garwood as the seven from
7:27
beginning to end so therefore therefore
7:29
the righteous shall live by faith
7:31
because we begin with faith and we
7:34
finish with faith so it's all from God
7:36
who does the saving and you know a lot
7:39
of time people say what if people have
7:41
never heard the gospel I think everybody
7:44
will hear the gospel because God who
7:45
said will preach the gospel to them
7:47
because he would give them the data that
7:49
they need to believe everyone didn't
7:52
have all the pieces but he believed so
7:55
if you need even if you live in a forest
7:56
and you've never heard you've never had
7:59
a missionary God is able to preach the
8:01
gospel to anyone he's based on what
8:03
they've heard is now based on what they
8:05
haven't heard is based on what they have
8:06
heard and if they reject that then
8:08
ultimately they will be held accountable
8:10
so God is the one who does the saving
8:13
and he's the one who preaches sometimes
8:15
through us sometimes directly like
8:17
Ibrahim but ultimately still guide us
8:20
behind the curtain in every situation so
8:22
we're gonna continue this study on and
8:25
we're gonna talk about verse seventeen
8:26
to nineteen maybe our next week okay so
8:29
I hope this helped you guys out and I
8:30
look forward to talking to you again
8:33
next week thank you have a wonderful
8:35
week
