Hello and welcome to Liberec
0:19
We are one hour north from Prague in a beautiful city called Liberec
0:24
And us Czechs usually associate this place with the mountain and the beautiful hotel on top of it called Jesztyet
0:31
And usually with skiing because that's what we come here for most often. But today we're going to show you the city itself and all the beautiful sights it has to offer
0:39
And we're starting with this, I mean, breathtaking city hall. And not only beautiful from the outside, but let me show you the inside
0:49
And not only you can explore the insides of the building, but you can actually get on top of it
0:54
I think it's pretty obvious that every view is worth it. And by the way, this one only costs two euros to go on top of the tower if you just want
1:04
the tower. But you should explore the entire building, which will cost you four euros in total with
1:09
a guide. Obviously from up here, you can see the iconic tower hotel restaurant Jeschgett, built by
1:16
the famous architect Hubaček. But there's one more building by him that you can see from the tower, which is that apartment
1:23
building up there in the hills and it's obvious why he built it there so he would sell the
1:28
apartments to the people and they would have a view of his other beautiful building right
1:32
i think i did not notice from the outside but it caught my eye here on the inside is
1:37
gutters inside the building well because there are none on the outside on the facade of the building
1:43
to preserve its beauty so therefore they're collecting the water that will flow from the
1:48
roofs to the inside of the building and eventually to the inner block. Genius. I love it
1:55
And if you happen to plan a wedding, they will suit you here perfectly in the Leberetz City Hall
2:01
because they have this beautiful hall with organs. I mean, come on. Despite the City Hall being from
2:10
the late 19th century, we would refer to it as the new City Hall because the old one was right
2:15
there on the square. If you look at the lines that are sort of shifted to the right, not in the center
2:21
those were the outlines of the previous city hall back in 1600. What honestly makes me happy is when
2:29
obviously city halls are beautiful and we can share those pictures with you, but when you can
2:34
actually go to see it for yourself. And in the case of Liberet City Hall, you don't need to buy a ticket
2:39
to see the hallways to enter the building. You can just walk in and admire it for yourself. We do
2:45
recommend not only going in but also getting the ticket with the guide so you can see the tower and
2:50
you can actually get a professional explain to you what's going on the city hall and the square
2:58
here in front of it in liberas is actually globally worldwide known thanks to an american hollywood
3:04
bloodbuster spider-man i haven't seen the film but hansa described it to me that it actually takes
3:09
place in prague different city but when they found out about this beautiful city hall they're like
3:14
let's move one of the scenes to Liberace. And they did exactly that. There's this
3:18
massive battle happening between someone, I don't know. But during that they actually destroyed
3:24
part of the building that collapsed and the filmmakers left that part of the building on
3:30
the square as sort of a memory to what they did. So if you happen to come here you can take a picture
3:36
of this block of building left here by Hollywood. We got that
3:51
My tip, if you're in a city that you're not really aware of what's where
3:55
is to ask locals on where to go. Ask them for the recommendations
3:59
And we did just that. Inside the city hall, we asked the woman working there
4:03
we said, where should we go for lunch? and she just pointed down and that's where we're at
4:08
This is the cellar of the city hall and there is a restaurant slash pub
4:13
where we ordered some very traditional Czech meals filled with dumplings. I mean, I'm in love, they're in love
4:20
Match made in heaven here. And this space is just beautiful and food, very much recommended
4:25
we're on top of a north bohemian museum tower but actually this is the city hall tower they
4:40
took the tower from the previous old city hall that we talked about and attached it to this
4:45
building so if you look from the outside you may recognize it from the old pictures Pretty cool but what is not cool to be on a tower while storm is approaching So let discover the museum please if we may
5:02
When I was told that there's the longest glass letter going up the tower in this museum, I was like, what
5:09
Glass letter? What are you talking about? Pretty impressive. You can also visit the beautiful building of the museum that we're in and there is an exhibition that caught our eye that is called Liberec versus Jablonec
5:23
Liberec is the town we're in and Jablonec is right next door. All around the world there's always rivalries between two towns, two streets, whatever
5:33
And I love the fact that these two towns are actually connected not only by a road, but you can take a tram from one to another
5:40
and it's a beautiful ride on a tram through the nature recommended
5:48
In English this would be called the museum a mile but we would say the museum intersection because
5:52
right across from that museum you will find another one which is actually a spa gallery
5:57
and as we walked in with Honza our jaws really dropped especially when we discovered this
6:04
absolutely amazing coffee place. But since I'm a technical type there's actually one more museum
6:10
right there which is the technical museum. Lovely technical museum here in Liberace where you can
6:16
see the Czech pig or the stretched limo that is made out of cloth or some other beautiful old cars
6:23
but you can't touch them nor get inside of the old stuff but lucky enough we got a phone call
6:29
from the depot and they said guys come on in with the camera we'll show you around
6:35
As you can see in Liberec, you can take trams, these streetcars around the streets despite the
6:41
fact that it's very hilly. There's a total of nine cities in our country and we actually
6:46
not personally me or Honza, but the city of Prague lended this beautiful historical tram to Liberec
6:53
for the summer and you actually know this beauty, this exact streetcar from one of our previous
6:59
videos and there's one more interesting thing here regarding trams in liberets
7:04
the confusion i always had as a kid when coming to liberets is why there's three tracks three rails
7:10
on the ground like do they have special trams with three wheels in a row well no the old gauge
7:17
was only one meter and the new one is wider it's the same as the trains so if you want to see the
7:23
older trams you've got to go to the museum or the depot uh here in liberets absolutely love the old
7:28
pieces. I was gonna give you a different fun fact about trams and liberes but
7:33
then they showed me a tram with a steering wheel. Alright, why not
7:44
Recommendation for this spot came from our friend Cuba. Thanks Jacob. And we also
7:49
got a voucher from him so today we're eating for free. We got ourselves coffee
7:54
because not only a coffee spot but also a roastery. We were lucky enough that they
8:01
let us in and they actually showed us the process of roasting coffee and I was
8:05
allowed to I guess open a batch to cool it down. You can also take a look inside
8:11
the roastery only through a window but you'll get to see a lot and then you can get yourself a coffee or a cake or a lemonade. And by the way we just heard
8:19
that the barista, one of the baristas working here, actually became a
8:23
barista of the year. You'd never expect this place to be what it is as you come in as you see the
8:30
parking lot the road it's like why am I even going this way and then you get to the train station and
8:35
suddenly there's this that side is not that nice that one I love train tracks trains that's my thing
8:43
sitting on the platform just looking around I love that and in the background you can see the
8:48
mountains. We were discussing with Onza, shall we film it inside or outside? And when I saw
8:55
underneath the table, I said, we can be inside because I'll still get my little touch of trains
9:00
So cheers. Believe it or not, but this street is actually in the world record books because
9:08
there's the most sewers per square foot in any alley street there is around the world
9:15
They're actually not written in the book because you have to pay a fee to be in the book, but I just told you so they're in the book
9:20
Every town that you can think of actually donated to this city their sewer cover
9:26
and they're all here. Only two of them are here for the purpose of a sewer cover
9:31
The rest is just sort of laying down on the ground, and you can find cities from all around our country
9:36
but also from all around the world. One of the coolest art pieces I seen in a while If this was in like a major tourist destination this would be an absolute Instagram hit They say that in the town of Liberace you either walking uphill or it raining
9:55
Well, now it's raining. And that's why it's important to know how to say the word umbrella in every language
10:10
There we go. So, deshtink. Umbrella. Deshtink. Umbrella. We don't have one
10:16
We took cover from the rain in one of the local coffee places recommended by locals
10:21
and it is very lovely, called the different coffee, or the coffee different way
10:26
And when I asked the bartender, I said, what's, why is it called that way? And he said, well, everything here is different
10:31
Look at the chairs, look at the tables, every single one is different. And also, our opening hours, I was like, ah, yeah, we noticed that
10:38
that we were like what the hell is going on here so if you visit make sure you really know what time
10:43
they're opening whenever i'm entering a venue a pub especially a pub for the first time and i want
10:53
to feature it on the show i'm always a little nervous because you know it's the locals the
10:56
regulars and we walk in with the camera i order a beer and i want to share the place with you guys
11:01
and my nervousness immediately dropped with all the smiles and laughters of the locals who welcome
11:08
us and they immediately said you gotta have this beer it's our local beer it's called Vokno it's
11:12
really good and it is absolutely delicious and the owner ran up he said hey guys what's up oh yeah
11:17
you missed my blue beer and I was like well I'm glad we missed it but he showed it up he said that
11:21
was very popular and you should come for a concert we do concerts here it's a really really cool
11:26
venue please stop by one of the most beautiful memorials that I know of to the victims of
11:33
communism in our country is this giant mirror here in Liberec with a simple text reading
11:41
seek within yourself whether you honor, defend or restrict freedom. Liberec has obviously many places where you can grab something to eat
11:54
if it's just a hungry window or a fancy breakfast place like the one behind us
11:58
What many Czech towns and Czech cities share and have in common is there's usually buildings that are quite similar
12:06
Tall, modern, large windows, because they used to share the same purpose, which was a Batya shoe store
12:13
Most of these stores have moved to different shopping malls, therefore the buildings were left for places like these
12:20
Which is a modern brunch place where we got some eggs Benedict that are very, very tasty
12:27
very tasty and the interior is very lovely but make sure to also check out
12:31
what the building actually looks like compared to the surrounding area where modern architecture meets old architecture yes that can be liberates for you i mean we just
12:43
had a fancy brunch in a beautiful modern high-rise building and we walked for three minutes and there
12:50
it is an old wooden mountain cottage the type that is all around us around the city in the mountain
12:57
This building is two years older than the United States of America
13:03
1774. We're not going there, we're going up there. See you later, alligator
13:17
When I found out that there is a paternoster non-stop running elevator in Liberace
13:24
And when I found out that it may be the longest one we have in the country
13:29
I mean, some of the floors are so far apart, it gets really dark
13:34
Well, I had to show it to you. So we're in the municipal building, or the regional office building
13:40
and we're going all the way to the top. We've been in here for about 10 minutes
13:49
16 floors. Hey, it looks like we don't want to go there, but we can
14:01
Just take the elevator to 16th floor and there's a terrace. This spot combines three things we love to show you and that we love ourselves
14:11
and that is taking a paternoster elevator really high up to a great outlook place that is for free
14:17
Bistro Shiroka, a place unfortunately where we only had time to stop for a coffee, but
14:27
you can get a breakfast or lunch or even afternoon snacks. And this is the typical place I refer to as a PFA PFA Pretty awesome Please enter Thanks to the Honest Dai Cho that you watching right now we get to see some cool stuff
14:47
like this underground bunker under the city that I had no idea is here
14:52
And it is actually open to public every first Saturday of the month, so you can go check it out
14:57
and we found some cool rooms within this one kilometer long hallways
15:04
The energy for this shelter was powered by this generator, Skoda Mate, from the 50s
15:10
And we just tried to start it up to crank it, but it wouldn't start. But if it would, all the muffler stuff, all the smoke
15:18
would go through this tube up onto the square above us into a lamppost
15:25
So they would, like, cover it up, right? Can you imagine you're standing on a square
15:29
and the lamppost is suddenly smoking like an old diesel car? You're like, what the hell is going on
15:34
Pretty cool. As we were rightly told by the guide that is taking us around
15:43
you can survive a certain amount of time without food or water
15:47
but not without air. Therefore, this giant room that has been preserved to filter air
15:53
and I love how they even thought of the idea, well, what if the electricity, what if the engines go bad
15:58
Well, you can filter the air yourself. You have to spin that 40 times a minute
16:06
There is a story in town, maybe a myth, that a class from a local school that is above the shelter
16:13
actually found a way into the shelter from the school. So during lunch break, they would actually crawl down here and just hang around
16:22
They found out, so they blocked the way. If this is true or false, decide
16:29
We'll tell you at the end of the show. It's completely true and they told us not to say it
16:46
Finding different perspectives and angles to see the iconic Ještět tower here in Liberec is great and we love it with Honza
16:54
And we found this angle in the public regional library with a creative library at the top floor
17:01
where you can store your own band or print a 3D car
17:07
Absolutely the most iconic building in our country that every single Czech can point to and say
17:14
yes, I know that, is not this one, but the Jeshtiad that we talked about today
17:19
This is where the author, Karol Hubacek, lived in this house that he designed himself
17:25
It was a house meant for families that they could buy from a catalog, pick it, build it on their land
17:33
They never fulfilled that idea. So this is the only type A house there is
17:40
And the architect himself decided that he will, since he designed it, live in it
17:44
since I live next to a building next to a water tower that was designed by this architect I have
17:52
a close relation to him so when I found pictures of the tower I took picture of the picture inside
17:58
the house I found it pretty cool and this house will be open to visitors so if you happen to like
18:05
architecture and you want to find out more about it this will be the place to go to and despite you
18:11
can see his most famous building from all over Liberace, not from his house
18:20
And you already know it's raining. Plus we're walking uphill so the conditions are ideal
18:25
Not the snow ones, but if you come here in the winter, this is the ideal place to ski or snowboard
18:30
We did just that in one of the very old previous videos. No snow and you still want to come here
18:36
Bring your bike or discover the city. I believe we showed you many places where to go to
18:41
We've created this video together with locals where we got the tips from and also with the
18:45
support from the Liberets region and they asked us if we can put their logo into the
18:50
video and we said sure. It's like the biggest logo we could find
18:57
And we have made many, many more videos together with the Liberets region so you can inspire
19:02
or get inspiration from our videos for your trip. All the places we've mentioned, we'll list them in a map that we'll link below the video
19:09
If you are from the town and you want to share your knowledge, do that in the comments below
19:14
please. That was us, the Honest Guides, and I'll see you next week. Bye-bye
19:20
And the Czech word at the end, since you're asking for it, all of you, is how to say a hill
19:25
It's kopet. Kopet is a hill. So please stop asking for the Czech word
