I want to share with you on our episode
0:02
today um about a book that was presented
0:05
to me by a friend of mine and he said,
0:08
"You're going to love this. It's right
0:09
up your alley and it has really changed
0:12
the way that I run my business. It's
0:14
changed the way that I make decisions on
0:16
the day-to-day and it it's really
0:18
changed the way that we have run our
0:20
hiring process." So, the book that we're
0:22
going to talk about today is The Big
0:23
Five for Life. It's by John Strleki and
0:26
it's a bit of a parable in that uh you
0:29
don't know that it's not a true story
0:30
sort of until the end. Um but it's uh
0:33
it's such a good uh example about how to
0:37
organize your life. And I think that so
0:40
many of us are really living just on
0:43
autopilot. You know, think about from
0:45
the time I get up, I go through the
0:46
motions, I make my plans, and I don't
0:49
necessarily have a goal for the things
0:52
that I'm doing each day. and I haven't
0:54
had a lot of purpose. So when I think
0:56
about how do I organize this, we have to
0:59
slow ourselves down. And this book helps
1:01
us to determine a couple of things. It
1:03
helps us to determine if we want to look
1:06
into it and and do the activities in the
1:08
book, our purpose for existence, which
1:10
sounds so heady and our big five for
1:13
life. And so the examples that they talk
1:16
about in this book are based on the
1:18
metaphor of walking through the museum
1:20
of your life. And so when when he talks
1:23
about it, he says, you know, we spend
1:25
our time every single day doing things
1:28
kind of monotonous monotonously or
1:31
mindlessly. And if you narrow down what
1:34
you want to be doing and and the things
1:36
that are going to be important in the
1:37
museum of your life, it helps you to
1:39
clean up what it is you're going to um
1:42
focus your time and energy on. And so
1:45
basically if I were saying that my for
1:49
example my purpose for existence is to
1:51
serve humankind. I know that I'm here to
1:53
be of service to help people through
1:55
their trials and tribulations. It's what
1:57
prompted me to become a teacher. It's
1:59
what prompted me to recareer in my early
2:02
30s to become a mental health
2:03
specialist. I knew that I had more in me
2:06
to help. It's part of what prompted me
2:08
to adopt children when I was really
2:10
young that were my husbands and stick it
2:12
out to raise them. I knew that I could
2:13
offer them something that they wouldn't
2:15
have otherwise had if I wasn't in their
2:17
life. And so when I think about my
2:19
personal purpose for existence, it's to
2:21
serve humankind. But everybody has
2:23
different purposes. And when I think
2:25
about how I narrow down my big five,
2:28
these are going to be the five most
2:29
important things you want to do or see
2:31
or experience before you die. And so
2:34
this museum concept is like you want to
2:37
visualize each day kind of as an exhibit
2:40
in the museum of your life which
2:42
encourages more intentional living.
2:45
You're going to align your work with
2:47
purpose. So you want to ensure that your
2:49
professional endeavors align with your
2:51
personal values and your big five for
2:54
life. So it's a way to sort of filter
2:55
the choices that you make. Part of this
2:58
is recognizing that we can't see our
3:00
blind spots. And so having mentorship
3:03
throughout this process to help keep you
3:05
in line, almost an accountability
3:07
partner, whether that's a friend that
3:08
you trust to tell you the hard things or
3:11
a counselor, someone in in your church
3:13
or even a sponsor. The importance of
3:16
having a mentor to guide you in
3:17
discovering your big five for life is
3:19
pretty important. It takes a lot of
3:21
introspection and it's it's helpful to
3:22
have somebody that knows you well to
3:24
help you kind of narrow down your big
3:26
five. The other piece that's important
3:29
related to this book is having a value
3:31
of continuous growth. Meaning that
3:33
you're striving for ascending life
3:35
represents continuous growth,
3:37
achievement, learning new things,
3:39
leaning into discomfort, and trying to
3:42
grow and stretch in areas that might
3:43
have been otherwise uncomfortable.
