The 2024 PGA TOUR season marks the 18th edition of the FedEx Cup, the TOUR's season-long points
0:06
competition which culminates with the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Here we're going to explain just how it
0:11
works over the season and how the three-event playoff structure works to crown a winner
0:20
Established in 2007, the FedEx Cup is a season-long points competition offering players
0:25
100 million dollars in bonus money and culminating with the FedEx Cup playoffs in August. Players
0:32
vie to become the FedEx Cup champion which distinguishes the one player who not only performs
0:37
well during the whole regular season but also excels in the pressure mounts during the FedEx
0:42
Cup playoffs. The regular season is contested from January to August of a calendar year and
0:48
features 36 official FedEx Cup events including the players championship, major championships
0:55
signature events, full field events, and additional events. Members of the PGA Tour earn FedExCup points based on their finishing position at a tournament The distribution of points has been adjusted starting for the 2024 season with an allocation of additional points to the players majors playoff events and signature events
1:16
These 15 events made up of the players, 4 majors, 8 signature events and 2 FedExCup playoffs
1:22
will award a minimum of 700 points to the winner. so Win the Players is worth 750 points having previously been worth 600
1:30
Signature events are now worth 700 points having previously been worth 500 or 550
1:36
Full Field events i.e. one of those non-Elite 15 events are worth 500 points
1:43
while 300 points is awarded to the winner of an additional event
1:46
Finally at the first two FedExCup playoff events in August a huge 2,000 points is awarded to the winner
1:54
stressing the importance of peaking right at the end of the season. At the conclusion of the regular
1:59
season following the Wyndham Championship in July the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings are eligible to play in what is called the FedEx Cup Playoffs which is a series of three events at the end of the season Points accrued during the regular season carry over into the first two playoff events
2:17
while each event features a progressive cut. So a field of 70 will take part in the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind
2:26
while only 50 will make it to the following event, which is the BMW Championship in Colorado
2:31
And then finally, the top 30 will make it to the Tour Championship at Eastlake in Georgia
2:36
There are no cuts during these playoff events, and it's all about making sure you accrue enough points to be in the top 70
2:43
the top 50, and then the top 30 to make it to that Tour Championship
2:48
So, the top 30 in the FedEx Point standings, after the 36 regular season events and the two playoffs
2:53
head to Eastlake where, effectively, a new tournament begins. At the Tour Championship, the player with the lowest stroke total over 72 holes, combined
3:03
with what called their FedEx starting strokes will be crowned FedEx Champion The FedEx Champion wins million and a five exemption to the PGA Tour with a total bonus pool of million going to the rest of the field Heading into
3:18
the Tour Championship, the FedEx Cup points leader after the first two playoff events will
3:24
begin the Tour Championship at 10 under par. The number two player will start at 8 under par
3:30
The number three player will start at 7 under par. The number four player starts at 6 under
3:35
the number five player starts at five under. Players 6-10 start at four under. Players 11-15
3:40
start at three under. Players 16-20 start at two under. Players 21-25 start at one under
3:46
And players 26-30 start at even par. From that position, the tournament begins and the player
3:52
with the lowest score after 72 holes, with those scores combined, is crowned the FedExCup champion
3:58
In 2023, Victor Hovland secured the title after winning the BMW Championship
4:02
and then the Tour Championship on the final day
