It's Olly Murs and Mark Wright on Heart and their new film The Auto Nights is out in cinemas now in the studio
0:06
It's Robert De Niro and Debra Messin! Well, as you can see, behind my left shoulder, you can see Mark Wright
0:13
He's not, unfortunately, he can't make it today to talk to you guys. He's absolutely devastated
0:17
I was supposed to be there the one time, Robert, when I lived in LA, I interviewed nearly everybody in your field
0:22
and the one person I never got to do who I wanted to do was yourself. So when it came up that you were coming into Heart, I was like, yes
0:29
and then my wife decided to have a baby. Which means I can't be in the studio
0:35
Congratulations. Congratulations. Thank you very much. A girl or boy? A little girl called Pa
0:40
Beautiful. We've both just become dads recently, actually. Congratulations. My little baby's 11 months old
0:47
And obviously, right, he's just had a baby. So, yeah, it's like a dad club here on Saturday breakfast now
0:51
Oh, it's nice. It really is. Well, listen, we're obviously here to talk about your new film
0:55
How are you guys feeling about it? Are you enjoying the reaction so far? We're very happy that people are liking it
1:02
You know, that's always a great feeling. Yeah. Better than the other one
1:07
When nobody talks, everybody's upbeat. But just, you know, there's a silence
1:14
It doesn't quite work. Nice. We hope it's true. Am I right in knowing this is the first time
1:21
you've worked together in a film? Yes. Debra, how was that for you? Oh, I mean, it was a dream come true
1:27
I grew up watching his films and when the opportunity came up, I just thought, oh, this is ridiculous
1:35
This is ridiculous that I have the privilege to do this. And then I was intimidated, of course
1:41
And then we met and he was just kind and generous and made me feel immediately comfortable
1:50
And he was playful and we had good chemistry. and yeah so i feel i'm i'm i'm just very excited about the project i think it's a really beautiful
1:59
film deborah you've had an incredible career so far obviously and it's still growing every day
2:03
you do amazing things but when you think about working with different actors and people that you grow up watching you now set the bar like here you realize that so where does it go from there i know i know i was like okay i you got to make
2:17
a call into meryl for me and what was it like becoming a mafia wife it was fantastic was it
2:24
oh my gosh the costumes are you kidding me it's the nails it was the nails the nails okay can i
2:30
tell you that i couldn't even open a banana it's the level of detail i think going back to the 50s
2:37
in New York. I feel that was what was incredible about the film. And of course, Robert
2:41
I mean, you playing two characters at the same time. I mean, tell us about
2:45
the challenges with that because I mean, I'm watching it going, how are you doing this? They offered me Costello
2:49
and I, we talked about who played Genevace and then Erwin, just yesterday
2:56
we were talking in an interview, said, I just thought, I didn't know else
3:00
I'd thought of you. Why not you play both parts? So that's how it started
3:04
I said, let me think about it. And that also justified it being me doing another gangster movie but this was a was a i'm not crazy about the word challenge
3:13
but in a way it was so you know yeah uh so that was it if the frank costello movie was to be made
3:20
there really was only one name on the team sheet and it was you as soon as this story was coming
3:26
to screen did you realize this has got to be for me i mean nick palazzi erwin winkler barry
3:32
Levinson, that team, of course, it's very, I want to do it, I'd love
3:38
to do it, just got to see, you know, and we work together, we make it the best
3:42
we all can between us, which we did, but no, I, that, though
3:48
Costello was being thought of as a movie for years, and Irwin Winkler, in fact
3:57
in the late 70s or even mid 70s we just talked the other day he and mike chimino talked about uh doing a movie but how did
4:07
what the story was and the um and even chimino told me after we had done deer hunter he was
4:14
telling me about it and maybe even gave me something to read but there was there was no
4:18
way of telling the story and these many decades later really evolved into something even better just talking about the two characters frank and veto obviously one very rational and the other
4:32
one's very erratic and obviously most actors on the set when you just having one role to play the
4:37
fact you had to be two different characters how was that like to get into that each time the concern
4:43
was the difference and as I was doing makeup tests with the makeup
4:50
artists and so on, Barry would say, you know, we got to figure out what's the
4:53
difference because he wasn't sure. I said, well, yeah, no worries. I'm thinking about it too. I'm trying to figure
4:57
that out. How, you know, what's here, what's with Vito, what's with Frank and
5:03
slowly it evolved into what it was and then there's a point where you just jump in and
5:09
you know, you say, I've done all this research Now I just have to go for it
5:14
Debra, obviously, I mean, Along Came Polly is one of my favorite comedies of all time
5:19
and my wife's as well. Just going from those roles into like a mob movie like this
5:25
I can't say what do you prefer, because obviously they're completely different, but is it nice to have that kind of variety when it comes to different genres in your movies
5:32
And that's a question to both of you. Yeah, I mean, I think that as actors, we're meant to constantly be transforming
5:41
and being challenged in different styles and mediums. It's great if you can do different things
5:46
I mean, the comedy that I do is what I do. I couldn't do other kinds of comedy but that
5:52
And it's fun to do it. There are less, for me, constraints or restrictions
5:56
doing something like meet the parents, meet the s. So it's fun
6:02
Something just reminded me, because there was actually a real starring role in the film
6:06
and that was, of course, your dogs, Robert. I mean tell us a little bit more about that
6:11
how did that come about? Jason Sosnoff one of our producers was talking about a scene
6:18
where we have our dog in the park in Central Park so my girlfriend Tiffany was there
6:25
she said well what about our dogs and she showed pictures of the dogs so Jason showed them to Barry
6:31
and Barry said yeah okay I thought I brought the dogs to meet him and I might have He said yeah okay let do it One of them a Pomeramian is that right Pomeramian yes And the other one I guessing it looks like a Chihuahua
6:44
A Chihuahua Yorkie or something? A York Chorky. I thought I was the only person on earth that had a Chorky
6:49
I thought like this kind of weird breed happened just for me. The fact that you've got it as well, I'm just buzzing
6:55
Even more my hero. We've got a bunch of them. So another film that you was in in 2019 was The Irishman
7:03
And we have got, and you did that with the amazing Stephen Graham
7:07
who's just an incredible actor. He was actually in last week and he has a question for you
7:14
What does he think is the best part he's ever played? People ask me that all the time
7:19
I don't know, I just feel funny saying what it was. Some were harder, some were received well
7:23
and I worked very hard on them and said, that's great. I don't know, you tell me
7:29
do you know one of my favorite roles and it's gonna it's gonna be a bit of a curveball for
7:34
most people listening but i think it's one of my favorite films is when you played the pirate in
7:38
stardust do you remember that film because i just didn't expect where it was going where the
7:42
character was going because he was this you know real burnish pirate and then at the end of it
7:46
that was not the character he was um so that was probably i've got a curveball too yes because when
7:52
people ask me my top 10 films that i love one of them is the mission oh what's your favorite part
7:59
you've ever played? I guess I'd have to say The Wedding Date. I think that it was just
8:03
an amazing cast and we had a really fun time. And I also got pregnant
8:07
on that movie. So it's... Oh God. Hang on a minute. There's so many questions
8:18
Hang on for a minute. Saturday evening, not Saturday breakfast. We'll leave that one
8:22
for next time. Okay, okay. But honestly, it's been a real honour to have you both here. Thank you so much for coming in
8:27
I know it's been a busy few days so thank you so much. The film, The Auto Nights
8:31
is out now in cinemas. Go watch it. It's absolutely incredible. Please give it up
8:35
for Robert De Niro and Debra Messing. Thank you. Wait, I need a selfie, guys
