I remember walking around in the lunch break dressed as Nessa with Joe Page and she said
0:05
I think everybody thinks that we are slightly dodgy women. The thing I really think about is this joy of shutting a door and getting in a room with
0:16
this person who I love more than you could ever imagine. Should we get our special guest in? Yes
0:22
Come on in. Come on, right. Catherine, come on, right. Oh my gosh
0:26
Easy V doesn't come for free. She's a real lady. Are you asking me to step in
0:34
I'm asking you to step in. Christmas Eve, welcome to Heart Breakfast
0:43
It's JK and Emma Bunton. We've got James Corden and Ruth Jones on the show. Morning. I mean, what a treat on Christmas Eve we get you two
0:51
A festive treat. It's going to be my Christmas present, JK, unless you've got me anything else
0:55
Yes, this is my present to you and it's free, which is fantastic. I'll tell you what, you can stuff me in your stocking every time, J.K
1:02
Well, 2019 was when we last met. How are you both feeling? It's been mad, hasn't it
1:06
You have been on the go constantly. Yeah, but it's such a compliment that people want to talk to us
1:13
I feel like we've had a lot of goodbyes with the cast, because obviously we finished filming back in October and we said goodbye
1:20
and we had a screening last week. It's not very often in your life that you, you know
1:26
create a TV show that seems to mean this much to people so
1:31
it's a lovely thing to be ending it on our own terms and knowing
1:38
that this is the last ever time that we'll see these characters so it's the last ever time to talk about it
1:44
stop it, stop it, stop it are you going to be watching it with family
1:47
are you actually going to sit down and watch it we're going to watch it together are you on Christmas Day
1:53
yeah, I think it would be very strange to not watch it together
1:59
Because for us, it really is the end of like a 20-year thing
2:04
I would hate to watch it without Ruth. You've got to watch it together. You know, we only really make the show
2:09
because you want to try and make people happy and it brings some joy somehow
2:14
But I think with this one, because it is the last ever one, the last ever episode
2:19
in a sense, it's not like, oh, we need a response to be X or Y because we want to make more
2:24
in the nicest possible way. We're just very, very excited for people to see it on Christmas Day
2:31
and hopefully feel some sense of nostalgia and satisfaction. And you created characters that you can totally relate to
2:40
and I think that's been such a wonderful thing. I can relate to all of them
2:44
We had Rob Brydon on Heart Breakfast. I'm sorry to hear that. But it was a few months ago. We're over it now
2:51
But he was in and he said this. Is he joking? The thing is, I think, having read it
2:57
they handle Bryn's funeral really sensitively. They do it sensitively. He's joking, isn't he
3:03
You'll have to wait and see. I can tell you that you won see I think it okay to see It not that you see Bryn funeral the truth is that after the plane crash the whole sort of
3:16
Stop it! Stop right there! Was it 17 years? You filmed the first episode in London's Leicester Square, didn't you
3:22
A literal stone's throw from where we are right now. Yeah, so that must be mad every time you walk past or you come into this building
3:29
It's funny because that's the only time we ever filmed outside of South Wales, wasn't it
3:34
And yeah, so that day in Leicester Square, we didn't really know what the show was
3:38
It was the first time we were speaking as those characters, apart from in the read-through and the rehearsals
3:43
So I remember walking around in the lunch break, dressed as Nessa with Joe Page
3:48
and she said, I think everybody thinks that we are slightly dodgy women
3:54
I'm expecting for people to proposition us. I wanted to ask, well, you've both gone off
4:01
and done such wonderful things and, you know, separately. But when you come back together or when you, you know, record this
4:08
does it feel like you're back home or, you know, does it feel comfortable
4:12
I love nothing more than being in a room with James. I get literally, even if we don't write
4:18
I just like being in the room with him because we do chat quite a lot before we write anything, don't we
4:23
It's quite a magical thing, really. And so I think for both of us
4:29
even in the time between sort of series three and the 2019 special where you know i'm i moved a long
4:36
way away there is a a bond and a an accord that i think everybody feels with their closest friends
4:42
those friendships where you just seem to seemingly pick up where you used to be and and uh this
4:49
experience actually of of making this last ever episode it's funny like over the last few months
4:55
or whatever people have asked us about favorite scenes or favorite things or moments and and the
5:00
truth is you know for me personally when i think about the show i don't i don't really think about
5:06
the times when we're filming it i don't really think about the finished product when it's on
5:11
tv even the the thing i really think about is this joy of shutting a door and getting in a room with
5:21
this person who I love more than you could ever imagine. And we sit with a laptop and a packet of post-it notes and a pen
5:31
And some chocolate buttons. And chocolate buttons. And we just sort of create this world
5:38
And then these characters arrive and they tell us what's happening. And really, that is the alchemy of the show
5:45
If you like it, if it feels like it's about love and friendship, it's because at the core of it is a loving friendship
5:51
that means more to me personally than even the show does. James, you're back home now
5:56
And we were talking earlier that you've got to be careful when you go round to James's
6:00
We're not quite sure if the oven is working. Yeah, you've got to be careful. That's the only problem. We just moved into a house which we searched for really for a very long time
6:09
And Ruth, actually, we were together yesterday and we roasted a chicken because the builder said
6:14
the builder said, are you having people here for Christmas? and we went yeah And he went yeah maybe just give the oven a few runs out And he did it tripped out it didn work Oh that is worrying We had to call the guy and I didn know where the fuse box was and all those things
6:30
but luckily we roasted a chicken, it was a success, yeah. Do you cook
6:34
Oh, I love cooking. Do you? I love it. I absolutely love it, yeah. Do you use anyone's books or you just go off, you know, do your own recipes
6:43
Jamie, Jamie, Jamie Oliver really is the reason that I got into
6:47
I love Jamie Oliver. Have you got one of his turkeys this year? No, what? Has he got his own brand of turkeys
6:51
Yes, he's so spitting, Mum, he sent me a turkey. I have not. Hang on
6:55
Wait, he physically sent you a turkey? Yes. This is an outrage
7:00
I know. I'm texting him. You text him. We need to talk about the Spice Girls getting a mention in Gavin and Stacey
7:07
We have that clip, so let's quickly play that. A keyboard? Yes
7:11
Oh, Pam, that's fantastic. Are you playing it? Well, not really. Oh, he does
7:17
Don't listen to him. Here, play something now, Dad. Why not? I can't
7:20
I've sort of got to set it all up. Do you know Two Become One by the Spice Girls
7:24
There it is! There it is! So we know that Nessa, she drove sets around for The Who
7:32
Some of the pips, I think, was the other one. Jules Holland. She married one of the pips
7:36
She married one of the pips. They got annulled. Now, did Nessa ever bump into the Spice Girls
7:43
Well, she was in the original line-up of All Saints. All Saints. which people don't know about so much
7:48
it was a power struggle wasn't it between Nessa and Shazney that's why it didn't work out
7:55
I bumped into all manner of men and women and everything in between
8:00
so you know it's very likely that we would have our paths would have crossed
8:05
I hope so James, do you know the rap in Wannabe? oh this is the question
8:11
you must know it because you are like so here's a story from A to Z
8:16
You want to get with me, you've got to listen carefully. You've got M in the place, you like it in your face
8:20
You've got G like MC, you like it on an easy V. It doesn't come for free, she's a real lady
8:25
Hi, you'll see. Stam your body down and whine it's all around. Stam your body down and whine it's all around
8:30
Yeah. Sing notes. Now listen, there's not a lot of people. So people always say, oh, I know that rap, I know that rap
8:36
But they always get it wrong. But that was word perfect. There you go
8:40
So we've got a load of questions from our audience who are obviously massive fans
8:44
Hi, James. Hi, Ruth. It's Mary here. There's always songs in the Christmas special
8:50
and I'm wondering, is there any singing in the finale this year? And if so, who will be singing
8:56
Well, Mary, that's a great question. I would say the first thing to say, which I think lots of people know, but maybe you don't
9:03
that this show, this final episode isn't set at Christmas. So we couldn't really end this one on a Christmas day
9:10
So there is music in it, but it's not what you would consider, I suppose, festive music
9:15
I think one of my favourite Christmas song moments in a Gavin and Stacey Christmas special was when
9:22
well, actually, when Mick was given the keyboard by Pam and then had to play
9:28
And if you look closely you see that Larry Lamb fingers are not really even touching Go back Go back and watch it You really feel you can really sense that Larry didn put a huge amount of work into working out
9:41
how to exactly play that. Was it like a Top of the Pops Christmas special in the
9:45
80s when no one was playing anything? Without question, yes. Right, we've got the final
9:49
question and this is from Katie. Hi James, hi Ruth, Katie here
9:53
I have a really simple question. Straight answer, please. What happened on the fishing trip? Oh, wow
10:00
Bye. What happened is... Are we going to find out? You've got to watch on Christmas Day
10:06
You've got to watch on Christmas Day. I don't think you're ever going to know. All we can say is, it is not illegal in this country
10:13
All right, okay. I've got one more question until we go into the next bit
10:19
James, would you like to step in? Are you asking me to step in? I'm asking you to step in
10:29
We have got one more thing before you go, a nice little surprise for you both. Yeah, we've got a surprise
10:33
They're both looking out the window. Yes, yes, they are. They're both waiting. But how did you feel about kind of, you know
10:40
being back in Barrie this year? Was it... Oh, we always get such a welcome, you know
10:45
It's an incredible place. Can I just give a shout out to Marco from Marco's Cafe
10:50
Because he always looks after us. And even like in between filming
10:55
all the years in between filming, every time I'd go down there, give me a lovely coffee and a lovely chat
11:00
and he always says, you put Barry on the map. Should we get our special guest in
11:04
Yes, I think we should. I think we should. Let's get the special guest in. Come on in
11:10
Come on, Catherine. Come on, guys. Oh, my God. Come and have a look. We'll just get in between Emma there
11:14
So, please can we welcome Catherine and she is the mayor of Barry
11:19
Hi, Catherine. We actually bought some presents for you guys. So these are just sort of a civic gift
11:25
from the town of Barry to say. Thank you. Are you serious? Thank you
11:29
Clark of the Town of Barrie. Oh, Dielchen Vowd at the top
11:33
Thank you so much. That is amazing. Thank you. And look. What's the next
11:38
That's going to be us on Christmas Day, Ruth. It's a pint glass
11:43
It's a tankard. We will have a pint of wine. Oh, that's amazing
11:50
That is so kind. So we did good. Was that a good surprise? That was amazing
11:54
Yes. Thank you so much. it's always such a pleasure to speak to you both
11:59
I just love the love for this show yeah and it's exactly
12:03
what is needed this year Christmas Day and I hope we'll see each other
12:09
again soon because obviously this is this is the finale of course you will
12:13
they're always busy aren't they always busy don't be strangers will you write
12:16
something else together we'd like to ooh okay should we leave it at that
12:21
no I want to know when when you're going to start writing
12:25
It might be a while. It might take us a while. We've got to find a new idea
12:29
but we're definitely, definitely going to give it a shot. Yay! Fantastic news
12:34
Now that's the way to end. James Corden and Ruth Jones. Thank you so much. Thank you guys. Thank you
